When I was looking for a Christmas present for my daughter in a toy store, a nicely dressed little girl, with some money in her little hand, was looking at some beautiful dolls. When she saw a doll she liked, she would ask her father if she had enough money. He usually said yes.
At the same time, a boy, with old and small clothes, was looking at some video games. He, too, had money in his hand, but it looked no more than five dollars. Each time he picked up one of the video games and looked at his father, he shook his head.
The little girl had chosen her doll, a very beautiful one. However, she noticed the boy and his father. She saw the boy give up a video game with disappointment (失望) and walk to another corner of the store.

The ninth day of the ninth month is a double yang day, which gives us the name Chong Yang Festival. Chong means “repeat” in Chinese.
The ninth month also suggests the coming of winter. If you sign on with your address set to “abroad”, you’ll soon find that thousands of them are interested in speaking to you! This is a great way for you to learn Chinese, and for them to learn English. I think that it’s a very interesting way of cultural contact(文化交流), too, for ordinary people from around the world to be able to have one-on-one contact.

When taking an elevator, do you often push the “close” button You hope by pushing it, the elevator door will close faster. But what if the button is actually fake(假的)
Karen Penafiel is the executive director of the US National Elevator Industry. She said that elevators’ “close” buttons are a complete trick, at least in the US, and that doors will not close any faster no matter how hard you push.
In the 1990s, the Americans with Disabilities Act was passed in the US. It means all elevators have to stay open long enough to allow disabled people to enter. Only US firefighters and elevator workers can really use the buttons with special keys.
But the buttons aren’t completely useless. According to psychologists(心理学家), fake buttons can make you feel better. They give you a sense of control that can help reduce(减少)stress. That’s why some other buttons in our lives are fake, too .
For example, many offices in the US have fake thermostats(温控器). People may feel better when they think they can control the temperature in their workspace. You were told that traffic light buttons could help make the traffic signals faster. But they may not work either.
However, even when people know these little “white lies” , they still push fake buttons. As long as the doors finally close, it seems worthy.
John Kounios is a psychology professor at Drexel University in the US. He told The New York Times that he always pushes the traffic light buttons. “Well, I’ve got nothing else to do while waiting. So why not push the button on the off Maybe it will work.”
( )56. According to Karen Penafiel , .
A. elevators’ “close” buttons in the US don’t really work
B. elevators in the US are of poor quality
C. using an elevator may not save your time
D. elevators’ “close” button only works when you push it hard
( )57. Psychologists think that fake buttons .
A. don’t help in our daily lives B. give people a sense of control
C. may make people feel unsafe D. can stress people out
( )58. The examples of the traffic light buttons talk about .
A. how to make traffic light buttons work

After a two-day train ride, the train slowed to a stop at Chengdu Railway Station. I expected to have an exciting trip in this city. And I made it.
I found the city to be like a cake with different tastes--- not only in terms of its food, but also its people.
The taste of Chengdu is hot and spicy (辛辣的). Each dish has a special name. Mapo Tofu, for example, is named after the person who first made it. This dish is not very spicy, so most people can enjoy it.
The spiciest food I've ever had has a funny name---Cold Noodles with Sadness. It doesn't mean you will feel sad when you eat it. But it means it is so spicy that tears will run down your face when you eat it. Among all Sichuan foods, I think hot pot is a must-try.
The taste of Chengdu is also sweet. One of the local foods is called Three Artillery (三大炮)。Its name frightened me at first--- I thought it was a kind of weapon (武器). Actually, I only saw three balls made of glutinous rice (糯米)that were covered with red sweet liquid. It was as sweet as honey.
You are what you eat. People in Chengdu are friendly. If you get lost and ask anyone on the street, he or she will help you. Everyone is smiling. Their smiles are so sweet that it makes you want to smile at others too. All in all, Chengdu is an amazing city.

When someone asks you to do something you do not want to do, what should you do I think it’s better to 74 more time on some useful activities. So you needn’t waste your time. Maybe it’s a 75 idea to say “no” at this time. However, you may worry that others will think you impolite or unkind. 76 should you do Here are some suggestions that may help you.
It is OK to make up white lies. That doesn’t mean you are dishonest. 77 , it may make both you and the other person pleased and comfortable. When you are invited to a party or some other events that you do not want to take part in, you can say, “No, but thanks for the invitation. That’s very kind of you.” 78 this way you can not only refuse politely but make the person who invites you feel comfortable.
When you don’t want to lie, just tell the truth. You may say like this, “I want to have more time for myself, 79 I’ve decided to say ‘no’ to these activities. ” Then people will see that you respect(尊重) yourself, and then they’ll also pay you much respect.
My last 80 is to just do it. You may feel uncomfortable at first, but this is not the reason for saying “no”. Never make anything more complicated(复杂的) than it is. Feel proud of 81 for being strong enough to say “no”.
