1. Teaching Objectives
1) Knowledge and Skills:
After the class, Ss will be more familiar with some new words, phrases and sentences structures;
After the class, Ss will increase some basic knowledge about play.
After the class, Ss will be very familiar with the story of Hansel and Gretel and its main characters.
2) Process and methods
After the class, Ss will know how to make a comment;
After the class, Ss will know the right steps of reading a play.
3) Emotions and attitudes
After the class, Ss’ cooperative awareness and organizing ability will be increased;
After the class, Ss will have more interest in English learning.
2. Students Analysis
本节课的授课对象为八年级下学期的学生。这些学生经过一年多系统的初中英语学习,具备了一定的听说读写的能力。但是各方面的能力都还不是特别牢固。所以,在设计课程的时候,要尽量从听说读写四个方面刺激学生的英语能力。另外,八年级大部分学生对英语有着浓厚的学习兴趣,但是有少部分学生失去了刚上初中时学习英语的热情。所以课程设计应该尽量活泼生动,结合学生的生活实际,最大限度地激发他们的学习兴趣。

5. Teaching Process
Step 1 Warming up(3m)
Ss watch three short videos made by their classmates and guess out what fairy tales the videos are introducing
Purpose: to introduce the conception of “fairy tale” , lead in the name of “Hansel and Gretel” and warm up the whole class at the beginning..
Step 2 Leading in(2m)
Ss watch the beginning of Hansel and Gretel, then answer the question: “How many characters are there in the video Who are they ”
Purpose:to introduce the main characters and background to Ss
Step 3 Reading (30m)
1) Before reading(3m)
Ss figure out the text type: A letter B play C short story
Purpose: to help Ss figure out the text type and know the features of a play .
2) While reading (15m)
(1) Skim for the main idea: match each description with the correct scene
Purpose: to catch the main idea of each paragraph
(2) Scan for the details: answer the eight questions about the play
Purpose: to understand the story in details
(3) Conclude the play in at most 5 sentences.
Purpose: to cultivate Ss’ organizing ability
3) Post reading (12m)
(1) Discuss with the partner and analysis the traits of the five characters
(2) Role play the play in group
(3) Ss comment on the performance from four aspects
Purpose: to cultivate Ss’ English learning interest and cooperative ability by group work
Step four Sublimation (3m)
Q: What do you think of the characters in this play Who do you like best or who do you hate most
Sublimation:“There are a thousand Hamlets in a thousand people's eyes.”

Purpose: to sublimate the whole play
Step five Assignment (2m)
Ss work in a group and try to make an ending for the story.
Purpose: to cultivate Ss creative thinking
