Unit 7 What’s the highest mountain in the world
(Section B 2a- 2e)
Analysis of the teaching material and the Ss The passage in 2b is mainly about our national treasure---pandas and the protection of them. As they are a symbol of China,we teenagers have already had some background knowledge. 2b~2c are aimed to have students find specific information by scanning in a reading passage. And 2d is to give some writing practice using the information they’ve learned in 2b. So in this period, I’d like my students to express their ideas about pandas and their understanding of protecting them using the target language freely.
Learning objectives Knowledge objectives:After the lesson, the students are expected to be able to:1. Learn the key words and phrases on P54 by pronouncing and understand the meanings of them. Bamboo, research, keeper, awake, excitement, illness, wild, government, protection etc2. grasp and use the key words and useful expressions by expressing their own opinions freely.Ability objectives: After the lesson, the students are expected to be able to:scan the passage quickly and find some specific information in a limited time.2. understand the steps of writing an exposition and learn to write an article about pandas and other endangered animals. Emotion objectives: Let students know the importance of loving and protecting animals and establish the harmonious relationship between animals and humans.
Teaching key points 1. Pronounce and grasp the usage of all the key vocabulary, like bamboo, research, keeper, awake and the target Language.2. Be able to scan the passage quickly to find specific information and make full use of scanning in further reading.
Teaching difficult points Be able to use the key words and phrases they’ve learned to express their ideas of protecting the endangered animals freely.

Step 1Revision and lead-in 1) To give a self- introduction. 2) To get the Ss to enjoy a short video of pandas and try to describe the differences between baby pandas and adult pandas using the information they’ve learned in the listening materials.3) To get the Ss to brainstorm the information of pandas using the words in2b. 1) watch the video and think about the question.2) Try to make complete sentences as many as possible about pandas. To stimulate the students’ background knowledge and get ready for the reading.
Step 2Pre-reading To get the Ss know more about pandas by enjoying some pictures of pandas and lead them into the learning of key words and phrases one by one. Listen and learn the pronunciations of new words and phrases using context.Try to know more about pandas. 1)Arouse students’ interest and enrich their extracurricular knowledge 2)Learn the vocabulary using the context.
Step 3While-reading Task 1:Scanning1)Ask students to listen and try to find out the meanings of these numbers: 10,12,300,2000.2)Find the main idea of each paragraph. Scan the passage quickly and get the focused numbers and the main ideas. To let students to scan for the specific information.To encourage the Ss to express the meanings in complete sentences.
Task 2: Careful reading 1:(para2) To show a picture of the zoo keeper---Lin Wei, and get the Ss to think of two questions: 1. What’s Lin Wei’s job 2.What does Lin Wei think of the pandas Then let them read the passage carefully to fill in the blanks of facts. 2:(para3)To get the Ss to find what problems the pandas have faced these days in the passage . Then think more about the potential problems they might face by asking questions.To show some pictures containing problems as hints if necessary. 3:(para4) Ask students to read paragraph4 carefully and lead them into the ways of protecting pandas by filling in the blanks. Then get the Ss to think twice to find some other ways of protecting pandas. Scan the passage carefully,,answer the questions and fill in the blanks.2) Answer the questions and discuss in pairs to find the problems the pandas might face 3) Read para 3 and4 carefully to finish the relevant tasks. 4) Express their ideas of the protection individually and develop their ability of speaking 1)To solve the problems in2b by rearrangement. 2)To let themunderstand the passage step by step.3)To read for the detailed information by scanning4) To have a general idea of writing an exposition.
Step 4Post-readingGroup work To show the pictures of other three endangered wild animals, and get the Ss to describe one of them as a teenager animal keeper. And find possible ways the teenagers could do to save the animals. To divide the Ss into different groups according to their cared animals,and choose a leader to present their group fruit.To give the Ss a sample of a semi-finished article. Students try to work in a group and cooperate with their partners by teamwork.Students present their writings among different groups. 1.To cultivate their ability of cooperation.2. To help the weaker students with writing.3. Encourage the Ss to express their opinions and increase their awareness of the importance of protecting animals.
Step 5Summary To appreciate a short video of my dear students expressing their understanding of protecting animals and also showing the best wishes to our future environment. To watch the video and arouse their awareness of protection Naturally take in the emotional objectives and the duties of the young.
