unexpected adj. 出乎意料的;始料不及的
e.g. It will not be unexpected if Tom comes late
again, because he is always like this.
如果汤姆又迟到了,一点也不意外,因为他
一向如此。
Language points
By the time I got up, my brother had already
gotten in the shower.
by the time 在……以前,常引导表示过去的时间
状语从句,主句常用过去完成时,即had+动词过
去分词。
e.g. By the time I got there, he had already left.
在我到那儿之前,他已经离开了。
So I just quickly put on some clothes and rushed
out of the door.
rush out 冲出去,冲出……
e.g. Henry rushed out of the room and disappeared
in the rain.
亨利冲出房间,消失在了雨中。
Julia rushed out and didn’t return.
朱丽叶冲了出去,再没回来。

I was about to go up when I decided to get a
coffee first.在我即将上去时, 我决定先喝杯咖啡。
be about to do sth.意为“正要 / 马上就要做某事”,
可表示将来的情况,但它表达的是最近的将来。
be about to do sth. when ... 意为“正要/马上就要
做某事,这时……”。

spoke first.

I went to my favorite coffee place even though it was
two blocks east from my office.
even though “即使,虽然,尽管”,用于引导让步状语从句。
block n. 街区
e.g. He’s the best teacher, even though he has the
least experience. 他虽然经验最少, 却是最好的老师。
We stared in disbelief at the black smoke rising
above the burning building.
stare v. 盯着看,凝视表示看得比较仔细,有时
候也带有吃惊的意味去看,常与at, into连用
e.g. Don’t stare at me like that.
别那样盯着我看。
in disbelief 不相信,疑惑,怀疑
e.g. Tamara stared at him in disbelief, shaking her head.
塔玛拉一边狐疑地盯着他看, 一边摇着头。
above为介词,表示“在……上面”,与below意思相反,说明物体之间的上下位置关系,不触及表面,也不表示垂直关系。
Look!A plane is flying above your head.
看!一架飞机正在你的头顶上方飞行。

over意为“在……之上”,表示在垂直之上,其反义词为under。
There is a bridge over the river. 河上有座桥。
on意为“在……上面”,表示与表面接触。
There’s a glass on the desk. 课桌上有一个玻璃杯。
注意:在表示“超过……;多于……”时
above与最低限度或某固定点(如温度)共联,
over与数目、数量、年龄、金钱和时间等连用。
The temperature will stay above zero.
气温将持续在零度以上。
It costs me over 100 yuan. 这花费了我100多元。
I felt lucky to be alive.
alive 一般作表语;也可以作后置定语或宾补“活
(着)的;在世的;(继续)存在的”;反义词是
dead。
alive在句中做什么成分?
e.g. People alive should try their best to live better.
活下来的人应该尽力生活得更好。(后置定语)
Do you know she’s alive
你知道她还活着吗?(表语)
Tom was kept alive in the big fire.
汤姆在这次大火中活下来了。(宾补)
alive 形容词,“活着的”,作后置定语,或作表语。
living 形容词,“有生命的;活着的”,作前置定语或表语。
lively 形容词,“生动的;活泼的”。

n. 傻瓜;愚人;受骗者
e.g. People always think I’m a fool, and I dare say
they’re right.

e.g. He was fooled by his friend on April Fool’s Day.

embarrassed
adj. 局促不安的;为难的;尴尬的;窘迫的
e.g. He looked a bit embarrassed.

embarrassing adj. 使人尴尬的,令人为难的
e.g. That was an embarrassing situation for me.

discovery n. 发现,发觉;(剧情的)发展;被发现的事物;

Many April Fool’s jokes may end up being not very funny.
end up (doing sth.) 以……结束;最终成为;最后

e.g. Every time she tried to argue with her
husband, she ended up crying her eyes out.
每回她试着和她丈夫争辩,她总是以流泪结束。
end up sth. 表示“结束某事”。
e.g. The scientist ended up his speech at last.
那个科学家最后结束了演讲。

e.g. The students began with speaking English,
but ended up with speaking Chinese.

Many people ran to their local supermarkets to

as +形容词/副词的原级+ as sb. can / could 相当
于as + 形容词/副词原级+ as possible,意为“尽
可能地……”,在句中作状语。
例:
We must do everything as well as we can.
= We must do everything as well as possible.
我们要尽量做好每一件事。
