Forrester GUMP(Excerpt)

5 Mrs Gump and Forrest wait for the school bus.
wait 是个不及物动词。
不及物动词的意思就是不能直接加宾语。
虽然中文中可以是“等我”,但是英文中就不能直接翻译为“wait me”。
后面必须加上与这个动词搭配的介词才能加上宾语,而与wait搭配的介词就是for,要加宾语就要加上for,表示“等待的目的”于是“等我”就应该翻译为“wait for me”
They waited for the ferry to return. 他们等候渡船返回。
Please wait 5 minutes and then I'll come back.
wait 直接加时间长度时,不加for。
Tom waited for me at the bus stop for 10 minutes.
6 The bus pulls up as Mrs Gump prepares Forrest for his first day of school.
① pull up v. (使)停下;拔起
Pull up these plants by the roots.
将这些植物连根拔起。
The policeman pulled up the motorist and asked to see his licence.

7 Mrs Gump: You do your very best now, Forrest.
Forrest: I sure will, Momma.
Forrest (Voice-over): I remember the bus ride on the first
day of school very well.

We want to buy a car that can seat five persons.

9 Forrest looks around. A larger girl moves over so Forrest can't sit next to her. She shakes her head. Forrest looks to the other side where a boy sits alone on a larger seat. The boy looks angrily at Forrest.
福雷斯特四下看了看。一个大块头的女孩往空坐上挪了挪,所以福雷斯特不能挨着她坐。那女孩摇了摇头。福雷斯特看了看另外一边,有个男孩占了更大的座位。那个男孩凶巴巴地看着福雷斯特。
10... it's funny what a young man recollects. Because I don't remember being born. I, I... don't recall what I got for my first Christmas and I don't know when I went on my first outdoor pinic. But, I do remember the first time I heard the sweetest voice in the wide world.
一个年轻人的回忆很有趣。因为我不记得我是怎么出生的。我,我不记得收到的第一份圣诞礼物是什么,也不记得我第一次外出野餐是什么时候。但是,我清楚地记得我第一次听到全世界最甜美的声音时的情景。
① recollect vt. & vi. 记起,回忆起
I don't recollect having seen her before.

② remember doing sth. 记得做过某事 (已做)
I shall always remember meeting you for the first time.
我将永远记得初次同你会面的情景。
remember to do sth. 记得去做某事 (未做)
Please remember to call me. (未打电话)
再如: He will remember to buy some apples.
He remembered buying some apples.
③ recall vt. & vi. 回想起,回忆起
I remember her face but I cannot recall where I met her.
我记住了她的面容,但是我想不起在什么地方见过她了。
④ do remember 的确记得,务必记得
do 的强调句式用法:主语+do +谓语,do放在谓语动词之前。
用于表示强调的do可以有时态的变化,但其后的动词要用原形。
注意:这样用的do只用于现在时或过去时,即只有do does did这样的形式,不能用于进行时、完成时等形式。
常用的强调结构:
It is / was + 被强调部分 + that/ who...
强调句,是基本语法,是一种修辞,是人们为了表达自己的意愿或情感而使用的一种形式。
⑤ ...the first time I heard the sweetest voice in the wide world.
第一次当我听到全世界最甜美的声音时的情景

像any time, each time, the first time之类短语,表面上看好像是名词性质的短语,但实际上它们都可用作连词,用以引导状语从句。
The first time I came here, I had the best night's sleep for months.

11. I had never seen anything so beautiful in my life. She was like an angel.
Well, are you going to sit down, or aren't you

12. --Then why do you have those shoes on
-- My momma said my back's crooked like a question mark. These are going to make me as straight as an arrow. They're my magic shoes.

13. And next to Momma, no one ever talked to me or asked me questions.

15. Jenny puts her hand out toward Forrest. Forrest reaches over and shakes her hand.

Since then 前后一般接现在完成时,从那以后,现在完成时表示过去的某件事对现在还有影响。

③ like peas and carrots 像豌豆和胡萝卜,
引申为“形影不离”
豌豆和胡萝卜丁,一个圆的,一个方的;一个红的,一个绿的。它们的共同点虽然没有太大的味道但营养非常高。故但在美国烹饪时做为主食的点缀,而且它俩都是同时出现。故引申为形影不离。
Wine and cup from that day on was like peas and carrots!
酒与杯从那天起形影不离!
Because of this , you who were once like peas and carrots become enemies.
于是你们这过去形影不离的死党,竟成了死敌。
② we was 不是口误,是美国南方口音中的一种,特点就是不管主语是单数还是复数,动词始终是单数。
