A series of small earthquakes have shaken central Nebraska and become the talk of the area. According to the information on a website, there have been several quakes since the 9th this month in the heart of the state, centered on the town Arnold, which is about 225 miles west of the capital Lincoln. The first, a 3. 3 magnitude (震级) quake, happened early that morning, followed by three on the following day, another on Sunday, and then the most recent earthquake on Monday. The strongest quake was the first one that struck on the 10th, which reached a magnitude of 3. 7. The earthquakes were found about three miles below the surface. There haven't been any reports of human injury or damage of buildings caused by the quakes, according to KWBE, a radio station.
“It is just kind of strange," Becky Dailey, treasurer of the Arnold Chamber of Commerce, told that station, adding that people around town are running around and talking about the frequent quakes. Actually small quakes like these are not unusual. Just two minutes before Nebraska's most recent earthquake, a separate one shook a city in the Dominican Republic, reaching a magnitude of 2. 5. A couple of hours later, a 2. 7 magnitude earthquake hit an area near Aguanga, in Southern California's Riverside County. There were two more that day in different areas of Puerto Rico: a 2. 9 magnitude quake and a 3. 1 magnitude quake. Those were all small, but stronger quakes regularly rock the world—just not so often.
Earthquakes are usually caused when rock underground suddenly breaks. This sudden release of energy causes the waves that make the ground shake. Two blocks of rock or two plates are rubbing (摩擦) against each other. After a while, the rocks break because of all the pressure that is built up. When the rocks break, the earthquake happens.
21. What do we know about the quakes in Nebraska
A. There were six quakes in all.
B. They all happened within 24 hours.
C. They were centered on the capital Lincoln.
D. The biggest one reached a magnitude of 4. 0.
22. According to KWBE, the quakes in Nebraska most probably.
A. caused many buildings to fall B. caused damage to the crops
C. were not felt by the locals D. were not dangerous
23. What does the underlined word“It” in Paragraph 2 most probably mean
A. That no human got injured in the quakes. B. That quakes happened there so frequently.
C. That an earthquake took place in the state. D. That people kept talking about the quakes.

“Good morning," the new teacher said.“I'm Ernesto Flores, your teacher for fifth grade." In all his years in school, Julio had never heard a teacher use his or her first name. Of course, the students always found out what they were, but it was up to the students to discover this information for themselves.
“Now I'd like to find out who you are," said Mr. Flores. He began to call the roll (点名) , starting with the boys. Julio shook his head. Teachers always began with the girls.
“Julio Sanchez," called Mr. Flores, pronouncing it Hulio. That was the correct way to say the name in Spanish.
Several kids laughed. They had never heard Julio's name pronounced without the J.
Mr. Flores looked up from the roll book.“Isn't that how you say your name ” he asked Julio.“Or do you prefer Julio with a J ”
“At home, they call me Hulio. But at school everyone calls me Julio," Julio said.
“Do you like two pronunciations of your name ” asked the teacher.“It's a good Spanish name and you should be proud of it."
Julio smiled.“I know," he said,“but it doesn't matter to me."
“Are you sure ” asked Mr. Flores.“Your name is a very important part of you."
Julio thought for a moment.“Okay," he said.“From now on, everyone please call me Hulio. Puerto Rico, where I was born, used to be a Spanish colony (殖民地) ."
“That's right," said Mr. Flores.“Can you tell us something about Puerto Rico ”
“I came here when I was only eight months old. I don't remember anything," Julio replied.
“I think you can interview your parents instead," Mr. Flores said.

When Harrison School District 2 turned to e-learning last spring, they made sure to provide each student with a laptop and the tools needed to succeed at home. But one remaining need in many families was Internet access.
Christine O'Brien, spokesperson for District 2 said, “When you had many people learning and working from home, sometimes there were Internet glitches. We wanted to avoid that and make sure students in our district could have equal chances to learn and that our families could learn from home as well.”
O'Brien said that this year they made sure to survey each of their students to see who exactly needed the Internet.
“This year we were really specific about asking whether families had Internet service at home without a phone,” she said. They discovered that about a thousand families needed some sort of Internet connection.
And that's where Altia came into play. A local software company heard there was an Internet shortage (不足) for students and it stepped in to see how they could help. Teaming up with local foundations (基金会), they were able to provide a monthly Internet service that allows many people to have Internet access at the same time. Mike Juran, CEO of Altia said, “At Altia we talked to Randy Rocha at District 2 and I just put out an email to friends and people that I knew and that made its way back to Pikes Peak Community Foundation and Norwood Foundation and people spread that around. Within weeks we were able to get something done.”
“The community came together and helped us piece this part. We worked so hard as a school district to get those devices into the hands of students but this was a piece that we weren't ready to do. We hadn't budgeted (预算) for it, so the community's coming together to help our families in this way was really truly amazing,” said O'Brien.
28. What does the underlined word “glitches” in Paragraph 2 mean
A. Users. B. Services. C. Problems. D. Repairmen.
29. What did Harrison School District 2 do according to O'Brien
A. They kept track of students' situations.
B. They sold laptops to students cheaply.
C. They kept holding new learning programs.
D. They encouraged students to treat each other equally.
30. How did Altia help to make e-learning easier
A. By visiting the families every month.
B. By sending emails to students every week.
C. By setting up a local foundation to raise money.
D. By offering Internet service to students in need.
31. Why was O'Brien so thankful for the community
A. It inspired students to be helpful and active.
B. It helped deliver devices to the hands of students.
C. It added a big part to the school's planned budget.
D. It solved things the school district was unprepared for.
D
How many sports stars can you name Whether it's ten or thirty, I believe that 90%of them would be male. Even in today's society, which calls for gender equality (男女平等) , it seems that female sports stars simply don't get the same coverage (报道) as male players.
The World Cup is the most widely followed sporting event in the world. According to a report, almost 715 million people watched the final match of the 2006 FIFA World Cup, a ninth of the whole population of the planet. But how many people notice the fact that the FIFA Women's World Cup has just taken place in Canada The US team was the winner, after beating the Japanese team 5 2 in the final match. England even got a third place! However, the England team in the men's World Cup seldom runs to the quarter finals. While the World Cup enjoys prime time on most BBC channels, the FIFA Women's World Cup is put aside. The only time the media made the news was when an English player scored an own goal!
The inequality doesn't end with football. Just recently, Caroline Wozniacki (a top Danish tennis player) complained that women don't get the same chance as men to play on the show courts at Wimbledon. In this case, I think it's the luck of the draw—the further you get in the competition, the more likely you are to play on the show courts. In the opening stages, it is true that often only the best players will play their matches on the show courts. Women's tennis does get lots of coverage, though many complain that it isn't exciting to watch.
Many people think the women's sport is often paid less attention to, but I think this is slowly starting to change. In the UK, there is a campaign called This Girl Can, which aims to get girls and women back into sports, regardless of their age, shape or sporting ability. Hopefully this campaign will encourage more people to take up and enjoy sports, and help to reduce the nation's health problems.
32. The hidden message in Paragraph 1 is that.
A. female players don't get much attention
B. male players are more likely to enjoy sports
C. there are more male players than female players
D. the media prefer to provide coverage of female sports
33. The author thinks Caroline's case.
A. is due to the level of players'ability
B. is another example of gender inequality
C. helps women's tennis get a lot of coverage
D. leads to disappointment at women's tennis
34. What's the author's attitude toward the fixture of women's sport
A. Negative. B. Positive. C. Unconcerned. D. Doubtful.
35. Why does the author expect more women to take part in sports
A. To beat male players. B. To have a household name.
C. To achieve their dreams. D. To improve their health.

Do you like to shop online 36 Maybe you like to do both these things. Smart shoppers know how to use different methods to get the best price.
One common shopper strategy is “showrooming.” This means that customers go into a store, look at the product, talk to a salesperson, and then use their smartphones or other mobile devices to find a better price. “Reverse showrooming” is another strategy. 37 One thing is for certain: shoppers are now using many strategies to get the best price.
The number of online shoppers is rising, but not as fast as retailers (零售商) first thought. People still like to go into stores. Teens especially prefer to shop at the shopping center. 38
In order to keep customers coming into stores, managers need to train salespeople well. In-store shoppers want salespeople to give them a lot of attention, be polite, and know a lot about the product.
39 At the top of the list are electronic products. It's easy to research these products and compare prices online.
However, online shopping doesn't work for every product. People prefer to shop for food in a store. 40 But you still need to drive the car. If you're buying a mattress (床垫), online reviews can't tell you if it will be comfortable for you. You still need to go into the store and lie on it.
A. What products do shoppers like to buy online
B. With online shopping, you can't try before you buy.
C. Usually the products we find online have better prices.
D. Or do you prefer to go into a store and look at a product
E. If you're buying a new car, you can research prices online.
F. Shopping for them is not about finding the best price; it's a social experience.
G. Customers first go online to do research and then go into a store to get the product.

Whether a thing is worth doing or not really depends on how you look at it. If we always ignore our own intention, we will obviously feel unhappy. Thus, take all your courage and do something your heart tells you to do so that you may not regret doing it later in life.
The following story happened in a battlefield during the World War I. The soldiers from two sides were fighting against each other fiercely and there was no sign for the war to stop. All of a sudden terror attacked the heart of Peter, one of the French soldiers, as he saw his friend—Tom, who was born in the same village as him and had played with him happily and joined the army at the same time falling in the battle. Caught in the trenches (战壕) with continuous gunfire whizzing (嗖嗖地移动) over his head, Peter was lost in thought. He couldn't decide whether he should lend a hand to Tom. Eventually he gathered all his courage and asked his officer if he could be allowed to go out into the“No Man's Land” between the trenches to bring his helpless partner back because he thought there might be some chances of saving him.
“You can certainly go," said the officer, who couldn't understand why Peter had made such a crazy request,“but I don't think it will be worth it. As you know, your friend is probably dead and if you rush out of the trenches you may possibly throw your own life away."
Considering the situations of the war, what the officer said really made sense because he didn't want Peter to risk doing so. However, the officer's words didn't matter to Peter, and he had obviously made up his mind and he went anyway bravely.
Paragraph 1:
Much to the officer's surprise, Peter managed to reach his friend.
Paragraph 2:
“I told you it wouldn't be worth it," the officer said.

Dear Jack,
How is everything going I’m glad to learn that you’re going to China this winter. You say you’re worried about your Chinese if you are in China. Now let me give you some advice.
First, you should be brave and confident to speak Chinese when you communicate with others. We Chinese are very friendly, so you don’t be afraid to make any mistakes. Second, speak Chinese slowly and clearly when you talk to others. In this way, you can make yourself understood easily. Finally, you can use pictures or drawings and body language. As you know, most of body language is in common in the world.
I hope these suggestions will help you.
Best wishes!
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节
Paragraph 1:
Much to the officer's surprise, Peter managed to reach his friend. Then he lifted Tom lying semi conscious on the land onto his shoulder. Although the gunfire never ceased, he managed to bring Tom back to their own trenches. As the two of them fell in together to the bottom of the trenches, the officer checked Peter who was wounded in the arm, and then looked kindly at Tom eventually dying from his gunshot wounds.
Paragraph 2:
“I told you it wouldn't be worth it," the officer said.“Your friend is dead, and you are also terribly wounded." “It was worth it, anyhow, sir," Peter said.“What do you mean by‘worth it’ ” inquired the confused officer.“Your friend is dead!” “Yes, sir," Peter answered.“But I definitely think it was worth it because when I rushed to his side, he was still alive, and I had the satisfaction of hearing him say, ‘I knew you'd come. ’Had I not done so, I would regret it later in life."
