Believe Myself, and I Will Win
Hello, everyone! It is my pleasure to share my successful experience in middle school life with you. My life in the middle school was rich and I learned a lot, but the most impressive thing was learning English.
I have studied English for many years. But I had some difficulties in speaking English. When I had English classes, I always had no courage to open my mouth. My English teacher encouraged me actively and also gave me a lot of advice and methods in speaking English.
I did more exercises to improve myself. At first, I practised reading English articles aloud by myself. I followed the radio to imitate the accent. Then I could talk with my classmates in English. I also took part in an English speech contest and won the first place.
From that I knew nothing in the world was impossible if I set my mind to do it and just remembered “Believe myself, and I will win”.
Thank you for your listening.九年级(全) Units 11—12

About 8:15 one morning, I left for the airport to meet friends from Holland, only to discover that the plane was to be an hour late. The airport is close by, so I went home to wait.
Arriving at the house I found my dog, Clyde, in a very excited state, pushing his nose into a flowerbed near our front door then jumping back, barking ( 吠 ) all the time. I thought that perhaps he had seen a mouse among the leaves. Then suddenly he ran to the other end of the flowerbed right by the front door, and began the same again — this time at a rosemary (迷迭香) bush.
I decided to check with a stick. Do you know what I found A snake! I was in shock! Quickly, the cobra (眼镜蛇) was slithering (蜿蜒着滑行) up the steps to our front door! Two quick blows from me with the stick and it was dead. Clyde was still unsure of it and kept barking.
I just had time to put the snake in a plastic bag and leave it for the rubbish truck, before returning to the airport to greet my friends. If the plane had been on time, things might have been very different here today! Friends have told me that the cobra aims to spit in a person’s eyes in order to blind them. Clyde’s barking warned me that something was wrong and danger was near. If Clyde had not been“on guard”, the cobra could easily have got into our house. There it might have lain hidden, ready to“surprise attack” me when I wasn’t expecting it. This reminds me of the fact that anything can happen at any time so we should be always “on guard”. We cannot take life for granted, and should appreciate every day that we have.
24. Why was Clyde so excited when the author returned
A. Because a snake bit him. B. Because he saw a mouse.
C. Because his owner came back. D. Because he sensed danger was near.
25. Where did the author first see the snake
A. At the rosemary bush. B. At the steps to the front door.
C. At the far end of the flowerbed. D. At the near end of the flowerbed.
26. Which of the following best describes Clyde
A. Playful. B. Curious.
C. Watchful. D. Brave.

My name is Mary White. I have five children, so our house is always noisy. Luckily, I love gardening and my garden helps me relax.
For a long time, I guarded the garden of peace and quiet. When the children followed me into the garden, I would expect them to be out of sight (视野). And I would hand out tasks.
“Here: you water the tomatoes, you dig the hole, and ...”Soon they would be tired, and they would leave me to myself.
But during a recent spring, while I was working in the garden, my 13-year-old son, Josiah noticed me. He picked up a tool and began helping. Working as a team, we finished the job soon. I appreciated Josiah and kissed him, realizing that I’d enjoyed working with him.
One day, when I was picking the peas (豌豆) and having a taste alone, Abby saw me and ran over. I put several peas into her mouth. She just loved how tasty they were.
“Mum, I want the others to try them too.”
Suddenly, I realized I had been wrong for long. I’d tried to keep the happiness of gardening to myself, and here was a child who couldn’t wait to share with others. “Sure, dear, let’s pick some. We’ll make a wonderful meal.”
From then on, I enjoyed all of the garden’s beauties with the children. We brought the vegetables back home, preparing and cooking together, because we knew that everything was better when shared.
27. How did Mary White make her garden peaceful and quiet
A. She offered her children some tasks.
B. She kept her children digging holes.
C. She served her children some tomatoes.
D. She taught her children about gardening.
28. What does the underlined word “appreciated” probably mean
A. Refused. B. Thanked.
C. Ordered. D. Educated.
29. What do you know about Mary White from the text
A. She found that teamwork was difficult.
B. She went on working in the garden alone.
C. She still disliked the help from her children.
D. She got to enjoy the time with her children.
30. What’s Mary White’s attitude (态度) towards sharing
A. It is useless. B. It is painful.
C. It is meaningful. D. It is common.
IV. 任务型阅读。
Let’s say you are taking a walk along the road and you happen to see one or two waste bottles lying on the grass beside the road. What would you do
You may have different choices. Firstly, you can leave the bottles there as they are. It was not you who threw them away. Why should you do something about it This is quite OK. Secondly, you can pick them up and throw them into a dustbin (垃圾箱). By doing this, you have walked a step further to help make our home clean. This action is a better choice. Thirdly, you might want to pick them up and give them to an old man or woman who collects waste for a living. If this is your choice, you have walked even further. You’re not only thinking about doing something for the environment, you’re also developing yourself to be a person who would think of others and help them.
As for young kids, they may always have such a question: “When do I grow up ” Yes! When does a child grow up And how can a kid know he or she has grown up These are interesting questions. As for us, fifteen-year-olds, who are finishing middle school, we’re no longer younger children. We should know whether or not we have grown up. When we start to have a sense of offering a helping hand for a cleaner city and greener world, and when we have a loving heart to think more of others than of ourselves and are ready to help them, we can say that we have grown up.
Remember: If we help others, others will help us. If we do our best for nature, nature will offer its best to us in return!
