英语中有一些名称是由几个词组成的，人们习惯上把这些词的第一个字母缩写在一起来表示这个名称。
例如:

HK 香港 GDP 国内生产总值
UN 联合国 WC 厕所
Language points
--What’s this in English --It’s an orange.
(1)此句用来问某个物品用英语怎么说。若不想强调“用英语”，也可直接提问What’s this 。回答不用“This is …”，而用“It is a/an＋可数名词单数．”结构。
--What’s this (in English) 这个（用英语）怎么说？
--It’s a jacket. 它是一件夹克衫。
(2)what是疑问代词，常放在句首引导特殊疑问句。
(3)what’s是what is的缩略式，it’s是it is的缩略式。
(4)“in＋某种语言”表示“用某种语言”。
It is a cup in English. 它用英语说是杯子。
(5)English用作名词，意为“英语”，表示一种语言或一门学科，首字母要大写；还可用作形容词，意为“英格兰的，英语的”，其对应的名词是England“英国”。
I’m an English boy. I’m from England. 我是一个英国男孩。我来自英国。
(6)it用作人称代词，意为“它”，可指代this或that。
具体用法如下：
①指已经提及或双方所知晓的事物、情况。
②表示未知的人或事物。
③表示时间、距离、天气、季节等。
--What’s this --It’s a pen. （双方都知晓）
Is it an orange in the bag （未知的人或物）
It’s hot today. （表示天气）
(7)【辨析】a与an
It is a key. 它是一把钥匙。
It is an orange. 它是一个橙子。
a用于以辅音音素开头的单词前，an用于以元音音素开头的单词前。
