The event that stands out in Tom’s memory happenedone morning when Tom was only ten years old.He was at home withhis elder sister Jane.Tom was doing his homework when he heard raised voices. At first he thought nothing of it since customers in the motorcycle shop directly below their apartment often became loud, but he soon realized this time it was different.
“Quick! Quick! Remove the motorcycles from the shop.” someone yelled.Thena thick burning smell filled the air.When Tom opened the front door of their flat to investigate,a thick cloud of smoke greeted him.The motorcycle shop had caught fireand people wererunning and crying.
Jane, who had been playing the violin in her room, hurried to the living room. They rushed out of the door and along the corridor（走廊）through the smoke.They were heading towards the stairway at the far end of the corridor when Jane stopped in her track.She turned around and headed back the way they came.Tom had no idea what she was doing, but he followed suit.
Jane had suddenly rememberedthe lady in her 70swho lived next door to them, who they calledMary. Jane beganbanging on Mary’s door, but got no answer.As the smoke thickened around them, Tom could see many of their neighbors—some still in their pyjamas—running for safety.The thought of fear crossed his mind.
“She would have run for safety like everyone else!” Tom cried. However, Jane refused to give up. “I know Mary’s still inside.”She said she was familiar with Mary’s daily routine and was certain she would still be sleeping. She pounded the door. “Go downstairs. Go now! Go!”
Tom noticed the flame was reaching up. Frozen with fear, he stood rooted to the spot. He comprehended the gravity of the situation and held Jane’s hand tightly. By then, both of them were coughing and their eyes were stinging. Time seemed to stand still, though they were probably there for only two or three minutes. Tom begged Jane to run for safety as quickly as possible. Jane tried to shield her nose from the choking smoke and shook her head. She kept pounding against the door. Tom burst out crying.
Luckily some neighbors passing by stopped and offered help._________________

One weekend in July, Jane and her husband, Tom, had driven three hours to camp overnight by a lake in the forest. Unfortunately, on the way an unpleasant subject came up and they started to quarrel. By the time they reached the lake, Jane was so angry that she said to Tom, “I’m going to find a better spot for us to camp” and walked away.
With no path to follow, Jane just walked on for quite a long time. After she had climbed to a high place, she turned around, hoping to see the lake. To her surprise, she saw nothing but forest and, far beyond, a snowcapped mountain top. She suddenly realized that she was lost.
“Tom!” she cried. “Help!”
No reply. If only she had not left her mobile phone in that bag with Tom. Jane kept moving, but the farther she walked, the more confused she became. As night was beginning to fall, Jane was so tired that she had to stop for the night. Lying awake in the dark, Jane wanted very much to be with Tom and her family. She wanted to hold him and tell him how much she loved him.
Jane rose at the break of day, hungry and thirsty. She could hear water trickling (滴落)somewhere at a distance. Quickly she followed the sound to a stream. To her great joy, she also saw some berry bushes. She drank and ate a few berries. Never in her life had she tasted anything better. Feeling stronger now, Jane began to walk along the stream and hope it would lead her to the lake.
As she picked her way carefully along the stream, Jane heard a helicopter. Is that for me Unfortunately, the trees made it impossible for people to see her from above. A few minutes later, another helicopter flew overhead. Jane took off her yellow blouse, thinking that she should go to an open area and flag them if they came back again.
But no more helicopter came and it was getting dark again. The temperature got lower at night than in the daytime. Jane put on her yellow blouse. At that moment, tiredness surrounded her. She felt exhausted both physically and emotionally. But she continued walking forward because she really wanted to meet Tom as soon as possible. She walked slowly and carefully in darkness. Following the stream for about two hours, Jane couldn’t support her physical strength, so she found a flat ground to spend the long and hard night.
It was daybreak when Jane woke up. ____________________________________

After school, at dance class, Stephanie talked and giggled with the other dancers as they stretched in front of the mirror. When Rosa came in, Stephanie didn’t say hello to her, but just another smile. Rosa hesitated for a while about whether she should join them, but she still felt too upset.
Then she noticed Kiara, the new girl. Rosa joined her and began stretching, too. Kiara smiled and Rosa smiled back. The two girls began to talk. Rosa discovered that Kiara was not the quiet girl she had thought she was. Kiara talked a lot — about her little brother, about the tree house her uncle had built and even about swimming. “I love swimming,” Kiara said. “I will hold a pool part at the YMCA.Would you like to come ” “Yes. It’s awesome.” Rosa responded. She tried not to check the mirror to see if Stephanie had noticed. She hoped Stephanie felt left out.
After the dance lesson, when Rosa boarded the bus, Stephanie was waiting in their usual seat. Seeing Rosa, Stephanie quickly moved her backpack off the seat to make room for her. But Rosa walked past and slid into the empty seat next to Kiara. They were talking about the pool party when Stephanie went over. “Do you still want to go swimming tonight ” Stephanie asked. “I’m already going,” she said without looking up. “Kiara and I are going together.” Rosa smiled. Stephanie nodded and looked at her feet.
When Rosa saw Stephanie in low spirits, her heart sank._______________
