I. Analysis of the teaching material and the target students
This unit talks about activities people are doing. They learn to talk about what they are doing and what other people are doing. In this period, students learn a TV report about Zhu Hui and mainly learn what Zhu Hui’s family and his host family are doing on the dragon boat festival.
Students in Grade 7 are active and they are familiar with the dragon boat festival. They are curious and fond of various activities. So it’s easy to arouse their interest in this lesson and encourage them to participate in the class actively. Also, the teacher continues to develop students’ reading abilities.

By the end of the class, students are expected to:

2. understand some sentences with the present progressive tense and some other important sentences.

Step1 Pre-reading
1. Warming up
①Enjoy a song “lemon tree”
②Greet students and talk about time difference between China and America.
Purpose: make students relaxed and interested in this lesson and be ready for the topic.
2. Presentation
①Introduce Zhu Hui and talk about the dragon boat festival.
②Learn some new words.
Purpose: make students know something about the dragon boat festival. Learning new words can pave the way for the following reading.
3. Word puzzle
Use new words to finish the word puzzle.
Purpose: Consolidate the new words they have just learned.
Step2 While-reading
1. Fast reading
Read the TV report quickly to get the main idea of the TV report and the main idea in each paragraph.
Purpose: make students get an overall understanding of the passage. They’ll know this passage is about Zhu Hui’s story and something more about Zhu Hui.
2. Careful reading
①Read and answer questions about Zhu Hui.
②Read and fill in the chart about activities of Zhu Hui’s family and his host family.
③Read and understand Zhu Hui’s feelings.
Purpose: make students learn the details of the passage to understand it better.
Step3 Post-reading
1. Retelling
①Retell the TV report together with the help of some pictures.
②Retell the passage according to the mind map on the blackboard.
Purpose: help students to get a better understanding of the passage and consolidate what they have learned.
2.Report
①Imagine what Zhu Hui’s host family are dong at 9:00 am the next day
②Make a report and act out the activities.
③Show their performance in front of the class.
Purpose: develop students’ cooperation, imagination and creative thinking.
Step 4 Summary
When studying abroad, learn about the world and let the world know about China
Purpose: Encourage students to spread Chinese culture.
