Unit5- 8 阅读理解专项练习
Kate Humble is a writer. Her new book Friend for Life is about the relationship between man and dog. Humble shares with us the books that changed her life.
Winnie the Pooh
By A. A. Milne
My father used to read this book to me when I was very young. He used different voices for all the animals. I loved the characters in the book: sad Eeyore; loyal Pooh; lively Tigger. A. A. Milne was really good at describing the way they got along together, opening my eyes to how society really works.
Last Chance to See
By Douglas Adams and Mark Carwardine
This book tells of the writers' experiences as they travel around to find animals in danger. Their travels are very exciting and they share a wonderful humour. The book makes me realize that we can't just sit back and allow animals to disappear. I read the book in my teens. At that time I hardly travelled. But the idea that we must help protect our planet was a really inspiring (激励人心的) one to me.
Picture Palace
By Paul Theroux
I've always loved Theroux's travel writing. I found this book in a second-hand bookshop. I read the first paragraph and thought,“How does he do that ” The words aren't long or difficult, but from that first paragraph, his writing grabs (吸引) you. I had an artist teacher who told me, “You're only an artist when you've found your own style, not when you're copying someone else.” And Theroux is surely an artist.

There exist cruel wars, fighting and sadness in the world today, so it’s not only necessary, but also essential to have a good sense of humor just to help us go through difficult times in our lives. Putting a smile on someone’s face when you know they are feeling depressed, as the saying goes, makes me feel good and warms my heart.
How would you feel if you could not joke around with your wife, husband, child, co-worker neighbor, close friend, or even just someone that you are standing in line with at your corner store I am always saying things that make others smile or laugh, even if I don’t know the person I’m joking around with. My Grandma always found humor in everything she did, even if it was the hardest job anyone could imagine. This not only relieves stress in any situation, but also is a common manner to speak to others that are around you.
I know of a few people that don’t have a funny bone in their bodies, as they say. Everyone around them could be rolling on the floor after hearing a great joke and they would sit there without the slightest smile on their face. They don’t get the joke that makes others laugh. I am busting a gut while they just sit there, looking at me as if I were from outer space. How can people not get a really funny joke
Laughing is essential to keep your stress levels under control. Without humor we would find ourselves with a lot of psychological problems, or on a lot of medications to keep us from going crazy. There is too much sadness in this present world. It drives people crazy. We all need to find a way to avoid the sadness and bring a little light into our lives. Therefore, I believe our best medicine is to get together and tell some jokes and have some fun laughing together.

A.talk about his own understanding of humor
B.encourage people to be humorous in daily life
C.introduce a practical way to get through daily life
D.convince people of the power of being optimistic about life
( )30.What is the author’s attitude towards the present world
A.Indifferent B.Positive C.Satisfied D.Critical
You probably know you should say “please” and “thank you” at restaurants. You probably know the rules of a library. You know you should respect and be nice to your classmates. But do you have music manners
Keep It Down!
You have to notice the volume of your music. You should not play your music so loud that everyone around you can hear it.Some people might even get angry.Usually when you play the music loud on an MP3 player other people can’t hear the words of the song. They just hear a loud sound. No one wants to listen to this.Very loud music can also be bad for your ears.So even if you are alone when listening to your MP3 players you shouldn’t turn it up too high.
Turn Them Off!
You need to know when to turn your MP3 off and put it away.Libraries and schools don’t allow MP3 players. There are other places like museums that don’t have rules but it would be rude to have your MP3 player on.Sometimes it doesn’t make sense to listen on your MP3 player at event. Why would you listen to music at a play a movie or a sporting event You would miss what is going on and others would wonder why you even came.
Take One Out!
Once in a while it’s okay just to take out one earphone and not other.Imagine you are listening on your MP3 player when someone asks you the way.It would not be rude to take out one earphone tell him the way and put back the earphone and continue listening. You can also do this when you order food at a fast-food restaurant or when you answer the telephone and it’s not for you.
It’s Your Choice!
There are times when you need to decide what is best. For example some people can listen to music on their MP3 players when reading books while others think it is disturbing. In cases like this you need to do what seems right for you.

Several days ago, I was walking home from school and saw some writing on the fence of a house I was passing by. It said, “Happiness is a direction, not a destination (终点).” I had been
having a bad day and just reading this brightened my day a little. I also took out a pen and wrote one of my favorite quotes (格言) down.
When I came back to the fence, I saw another quote under mine in the handwriting as the first one. I added another, and we kept at this pattern for quite a while. One day, I was writing another quote on the fence and the old man, one of my neighbors, who owned the fence, saw me. He came out and I was afraid he would be mad at me for writing on his fence; he was not known to be very friendly. He gave me a sharp glance and then read the quotes on the fence. Without saying a word, he said something to himself and then went back inside. I was a bit terrified for a while, afraid to go back to the fence, but when I did, I noticed not more quotes but two words in entirely different handwriting had been added, “Thank you.”
Later, I saw the old man in his front yard. He beckoned (召唤) me over and told me how my quotes had been inspiring him, how he thanked me and how he was glad to see young people still have “values”. We are now good friend and I talk to him a lot. This experience has changed my life. I still don’t know who wrote that very first quote, but if he is out there, I’d like to say “thanks” to that unknown friend.
8. Why did the writer begin to write a quote on the fence
A. He wanted to practice his handwriting.
B. He had gotten some help from the quote.
C. He thought doing this was interesting.
D. He wanted to catch his neighbor’s attention.
9 Why was the writer afraid when he found that his neighbor had seen him
A. He had thought that the old man was a mad person.
B. he had once been told the old man was cold-hearted.
C. He thought the old man would scold him for what he had done.
D. He thought the old man would tell his parents about his action.
10. Who must have added “Thank you.” to the fence
A. The old man. B. Someone else. C. The writer himself. D. That unknown friend. 11. We can learn from the passage that __________.
A. writing quotes on fences is a good idea
B. the writer has written three quotes on the fence
C. the good relationship between neighbors is very important.
D. the old man has changed his opinion about young people.
Do you want to know how and why a fall leaf changes color We first have to understand what leaves are and what they do.
Leaves are the world’s food factories. Plants take water from the ground through their roots and take CO2 from the air. Plants use sunlight to turn water and CO2 into glucose(葡萄糖), a kind of
sugar. Plants use it as food for energy and growing.
A chemical called “chlorophyll” in the leaves gives plants their green colour. As summer ends and autumn comes, the days get shorter and shorter, and trees “know” to begin getting ready for winter.
During winter, there is not enough sunlight or water. Trees rest during this time and live on the food they store during the summer. They begin to shut down their food-making factories. As the green chlorophyll disappears from the leaves, we begin to see yellow and orange leaves.
The bright reds and purples we see in leaves are made mostly in autumn. In some trees, like maples(枫树), sunlight and the cool nights of autumn turn the glucose in the leaves into a red colour. And we can enjoy the beautiful red leaves during autumn.

When someone says "Well, I guess I'll have to go to face the music", it does not mean he is planning to go to a concert. It is something far less pleasant, like being called in by your boss to
explain why you did this or that, and why you did not do this or that. Sour music, indeed, but it has to be faced.
The phrase "to face the music" is familiar to every American, young and old. It is at least 100 years old. Where did the expression come from
The first information comes from the American writer James Fenimore Cooper. He said -- in 1851-- that the expression was first used by actors while waiting in the wings to go on stage. After they got their cue to go on, they often said, "It's time to go to face the music." And that is exactly what they did face the orchestra(交响乐团) which was just below the stage.
An actor might be frightened or nervous as he moved on to the stage in front of the audience that might be friendly or perhaps unfriendly, especially if he forgot his lines. But he had to go out.
So, "to face the music" came to mean having to go through something, no matter how unpleasant the experience might be, because you knew you had no choice.
The other explanation comes from the army. Men had to face inspection(检阅) by their leader. The soldiers worried about how well they looked. Was their equipment(装备) clean---
shiny enough to pass inspection Still, the men had to go out, and face the music of the band, as well as the inspection. What else could they do

We have known for a long time that flowers of different plants open and close at different time of day. This is so familiar that there seems to be no need to ask the reason for it. Yet no one really understands why flowers open and close like this at particular times. The process (过程) is not as simple as we might think, as recent experiments have shown. In one study, flowers were kept in constant (连续的) darkness. We might expect that the flowers, without any information about the time of day, did not open as they normally do. In fact, they continued to open at their usual time. This suggests that they have some mysterious (神秘的) way of knowing the time. Their sense of time does not depend on information from the outside world; it is, so to speak, inside them, a kind
of "inner clock".
This discovery (发现) may not seem to be very important. However, it was later found that not just plants but also animals -including man -have this "inner clock" which controls the working of their bodies and influences (影响) their activities. Men, then, are also influenced by this mysterious power. Whether we wish it or not, it affects such things in our life as our need for sleep, our need for food.
In the past, this did not matter very much because people lived in natural condition. In the modern world, things are different; now there are spacemen, airplane pilots and, in ordinary life, a lot of people who have to work at night. It would be very useful, then, to know more about the "inner clock". Such ordinary things as flowers might help us understand more about ourselves.

The most awful words in the English language are, "Our computer is down." You hear it more and more when you are on business. The other day I was at the airport waiting for a ticket to Washington and the girl in the ticket office said, "I'm sorry, I can't sell you a ticket. Our computer is down."
"If your computer is down, just write me out a ticket."
"I can't write you out a ticket. The computer is the only one allowed to do so."
I looked down on the computer and every passenger was just standing there drinking coffee
and looking at the black screen. Then I asked her, "What do all you people do "
"We give the computer the information about your trip, and then it tells us whether you can fly with us or not."
"So when it goes down, you go down with it."
"That's good, sir."
"How long will the computer be down " I wanted to know.
"I have no idea. Sometimes it's down for 10 minutes, sometimes for two hours. There's no way we can find out without asking the computer, and since it's down it won't answer us."
After the girl told me they had no backup (备用) computer, I said. "Let's forget the computer. What about your planes They're still flying, aren't they "
"I couldn't tell without asking the computer."
"Maybe I could just go to the gate and ask the pilot if he's flying to Washington," I suggested.
"I wouldn't know what gate to send you to. Even if the pilot was going to Washington, he couldn't take you if you didn't have a ticket."
"Is there any other airline(航空公司) flying to Washington within the next few hours "
"I wouldn't know," she said, pointing at the dark screen. "Only 'IT' knows. 'It' can't tell me."
By this time there were quite a few people standing in lines. The word soon spread to other travelers that the computer was down. Some people went white, some people started to cry and still others kicked their luggage (行李).

To us, it seems so natural to put up an umbrella to keep the water off when it rains. But in fact the
umbrella was not invented as protection against the rain. Its first use was as a shade against the sun.
Nobody knows who first invented it, but the umbrella was used in very ancient times. Probably the first to use it were the Chinese, back in the eleventh century BC.
We know that the umbrella was used in ancient Egypt and Babylon as a sunshade. And there was a strange thing connected with its use: it became a symbol of honor and power. In the Far East in ancient times, the umbrella was allowed to be used only by those in high office or by royal people such as the kings or queens.
In Europe, the Greeks were the first to use the umbrella as a sunshade. The umbrella was in common use in ancient Greece, but it is believed that the first people in Europe to use the umbrella as protection against the rain were the ancient Romans. During the middle ages in Europe, the use of the umbrella almost disappeared (消失). Then it appeared again in Italy in the late sixteenth century. And again it became a symbol of power.
