After a long winter, spring is the ideal time for sightseeing and exploring London's green spaces.
Explore London's parks and gardens
Springtime is the perfect time to explore London's parks and gardens, when the city's Royal Parks will be blooming with flowers. Go and admire the rainbow of azaleas (杜鹃花) at Richmond Park or hire a deckchair in St. James's Park with a view of Buckingham Palace.
Enjoy the entertainment at spring festivals
There are a good many festivals and events held in London throughout spring. Make the most of the cultural exhibitions at the British Library Spring Festival, the Sundance Film Festival or the London Literature Festival; head to Shakespeare's Globe, which hosts open air Shakespeare performances from late April until early October.
Get active
Warmer weather means there's no excuse for staying indoors, so go for a walking or cycling tour of London. Alternatively, walk the Thames Walkway, which follows the river all the way from central London into the countryside; make the most of London's “Boris Bikes”, which are available for hire all around the city and are free of charge for the first half hour. If you're really looking for a challenge, sign up for the famous London Marathon, held annually in April.
Take to the waters
Whether cruising (航行) along the Thames River, hiring a rowing boat in Hyde Park or riding a canal boat around Little Venice, there are lots of fun ways to get on the water in London. Alibaba started taking the lead in China by connecting big Chinese manufacturers (制造商) with big buyers across the world. Its business to business site, allowed businesses to buy almost everything.Alibaba's advantage wasn't hard to judge: size.Alibaba is just big, even by Chinese standards. Its market attracts about 231 million active buyers, 8 million sellers,
11.3 billion orders a year — and Alibaba is just the middleman. It encourages people to use its markets — not charging small sellers a percentage of the sale.
If you want a quick look into the influence of Alibaba on Chinese daily life, take my experience.I moved to Beijing a year ago and quickly got tired of visiting small stores across the crowded, polluted city of 20 million people in search of new electronics, bathroom furnishings, and anything else my wife wanted.“You're looking for what exactly? Why not try it?” my Chinese teacher asked me one day. With that, my wonderful new relationship with Alibaba began.
Alibaba's original business to business model now is second to consumer buying.Chinese retail (零售) buying makes up 80% of Alibaba's profit, and leading that group is Taobao, with 800 million items for sale and the most unbelievable selection of things you'll never find. is Alibaba's another big site, where you can find brand name goods from Nike to Unilever almost at the lowest prices.
What I have a hard time explaining to friends and family back in the U.S. is how China has gone beyond traditional shopping — big box retailers especially — in favor of online purchases on Taobao and a few other sites. In smaller towns than Beijing, Taobao will be the first choice when shopping online.
I have a list of some of my recent purchases on Taobao for a sense of how wide the marketplace is.Almost everything arrived a day or two after ordering with free shipping.I'm not even a big buyer, because I need friends to help me search the Chinese language site. When I was searching my purchase history on my Chinese teacher's iPad, which helps me buy goods, I looked through with great difficulty about 10 of her purchases for every one of mine.

Communicate with yourself too.
Remind yourself often of your commitment. __4__ Write down every day what happens, what your feelings are, and how you'll continue to create the new habit or change this bad habit. The journal helps you stay motivated, especially if you can see your progress every day.
Deal positively with relapse (退步).

It is widely known that any English conversation begins with the weather. Such a fixation with the weather finds expression in Dr. Johnson's famous comment that “When two Englishmen meet, their first talk is of weather.” Though Johnson's observation is as accurate now as it was over two hundred years ago, most commentators fail to come up with a convincing explanation for this English weather speak.
Bill Bryson, for example, concludes that, as the English weather is not at all exciting, the obsession with it can hardly be understood. He argues that “To an outsider, the most striking thing about the English weather is that there is not very much of it.” Simply, the reason is that the unusual and unpredictable weather is almost unknown in the British Isles.
Jeremy Paxman, however, disagrees with Bryson, arguing that the English weather is by nature attractive. “Bryson is wrong,” he says, “because the English preference for the weather has nothing to do with the natural phenomena. The interest is less in the phenomena themselves, but in uncertainty.” According to him, the weather in England is very changeable and uncertain and it attracts the English as well as the outsider.
Bryson and Paxman stand for common misconceptions about the weather speak among the English. Both commentators, somehow, are missing the point. The English weather conversation is not really about the weather at all. English weather speak is a system of signs, which is developed to help the speakers overcome the natural reserve and actually talk to each other. Everyone knows conversations starting with weather speak are not requests for weather data. Rather, they are routine greetings, conversation starters or the blank “fillers”. In other words, English weather speak is a means of social bonding.
1.The author mentions Dr. Johnson's comment to show that________.
A.most commentators agree with Dr. Johnson
B.Dr. Johnson is famous for his weather observation
C.the comment was accurate two hundred years ago
D.English conversations usually start with the weather
2.What does the underlined word “obsession” most probably refer to
A.A social trend.
B.An emotional state.
C.A historical concept.
D.An unknown phenomenon.
3.According to the passage, Jeremy Paxman believes that________.
A.Bill Bryson has little knowledge of the weather
B.there is nothing special about the English weather
C.the English weather attracts people to the British Isles
D.English people talk about the weather for its uncertainty
4.What is the author's main purpose of writing the passage
A.To explain what English weather speak is about.
B.To analyse misconceptions about the English weather.
C.To find fault with both Bill Bryson and Jeremy Paxman.
D.To convince people that the English weather is changeable.
B
When I first arrived at Barranquilla, the public transport system was a mystery to me. Seemingly, hundreds of huge, multicolored buses whizzed around. What's more, there seemed to be no stop signs, and therefore absolutely no indication of where the bus was going, or at what time it would arrive there. Now I know more about the ways of Barranquilla buses. I thought it only fair to share this knowledge.
So, start with the decorations. The vehicles are painted all colors of the rainbow, and often have graffiti style designs on the side. In fact, this type of graphic design is so typical here that even a local design company took it and decided to make T shirts with it. The inside is decorated according to the taste of the driver, with stickers quotations, names of family members, curtains and various items dangling from the ceiling.
At night time, the buses are covered with multicolored flashing lights enough for a good party atmosphere, coupled with the music from the driver's stereo system, which is exactly what you get!
As for the destinations, no signs are needed — these are often splashed across the front of the bus, with a card in the front window detailing more specific directions. If you see a bus passing your way and you want to get on, you stick out your hand and wave it about a bit, and the bus driver will slam on the brakes and wait for you before continuing on his way.
On the journey itself, there's yet more fun to be had. Vendors (小商贩) often pass through the buses, trying to sell you sweets or water bags. There are also preachers coming to give you the sermon (布道) of the day in return for some small change. However, my favorite moment is when someone comes into the main street with a mini stereo and some rap music to entertain the crowd.
5.When the writer first arrived in Barranquilla, he/she ________.
A.hated taking the bus
B.got lost many times
C.was confused by the public transport
D.shared the knowledge with the local people
6.The decorations of the vehicles are ________.
A.colorful and personalized
B.bright and humorous
C.old fashioned and unusual
D.practical and tasteful
故选A项。
7.How can you get on a bus in Barranquilla
A.By using a stop sign.
B.By raising a card.
C.By slamming on the brakes.
D.By waving your hand.
根据第四段第二句“If you see ... you want to get on, you stick out your hand and wave it about a bit ... before continuing on his way.”
8.What does the writer like best according to the last paragraph
A.Sweets. B.Rap music.
C.Small change. D.Water bags.
PAGE

London — A morning's train ride away, across the Channel, English kids about Liverpool's soccer team in a Paris pub.
Some Parisians have even started to go to work in London.
In the 19th century, Charles Dickens compared the two great rival cities, London and Paris, in A Tale of Two Cities. These days, it might be A Tale of One City.
Parisians are these days likely to smile in sympathy at a visitor's broken French and respond in polite English.
As jobs grew lacking at home over recent years, perhaps 250,000 Frenchmen moved across the Channel. With an undersea tunnel, they could travel between cities in three hours. The European Union freed them from immigration and customs.
Paris, rich in beauty, is more attractive, but London feels more full of life, and more fun until the pubs shut down.
“For me, the difference is that London is real, alive,” said Trevor Wheeler, a banker.
Chantal Jaouen, a professional designer, agrees. “I am French, but I'll stay in London,” she said.
There is, of course, the other view. Julie Lenoux is a student who moved to London two years ago. “I think people laugh more in Paris,” she said.
In fact, London and Paris, with their obvious new similarities, are beyond the old descriptions. As the European Union gradually loosened controls, Londoners flocked into Paris to shop, eat and buy property.
“Both cities have changed beyond recognition,” said Larry Collins, a writer and sometimes a Londoner.
Like most people who know both well, he finds the two now fit together comfortably.
“I first fell in love with Paris in the 1950s, and it is still a wonderful place,” Collins said.
“But if I had to choose, it would be London. Things are so much more ordered, and life is better, but certainly not cheaper.”
In fancy parts of London, rents can be twice those on Avenue Foch in Paris.
Deciding between London and Paris requires a lifestyle choice.
Like Daphne Benoit, a French journalism student with perfect English, many young people are happy to be close enough so they don't have to choose.
“I love Paris, my little neighborhood, the way I can walk around a center, but life is so structured,” she said. “In London, you can be who you want. No one cares.”

Standing 20 feet from a lion, Charles Tshuma was armed with just a horn.He and some neighbors kept blowing their horns and shouting and screaming until the lion turned away and walked slowly back into Hwange National Park, leaving Tshuma's community. It's not always so easy, said Tshuma.“Sometimes people in the village do not want to join in, choosing instead to lock themselves indoors,” he said.
That is the life of Zimbabwe's lion guards, brave community members selected and trained to prevent attacks on humans and cattle by big cats from the unfenced (无围墙的) Hwange National Park.
The killing of Cecil the lion near Hwange National Park caused international outrage. It caused the largest reaction in the history of wildlife conservation. But the biggest threat to Hwange's lions comes from conflicts with surrounding cattle farmers, researchers say.
Oxford University's Lions Research Project has tracked and studied over 30 lion families in its 15 years here. Seeing many attacks by lions wandering out of the park, the researchers in 2007 created the Long Shields program.Since then, there has been a 40 percent decrease in the number of conflicts. Many of Hwange's lions have collars (项圈) with satellite tracking devices so the researchers can inform surrounding villages when and where lions have left the park.
“We certainly know that the program has actually been able to drive away some lions from the community back into the park,”said Lovelater Sedede, an ecologist, but she warns:“Lions running away from the sound of horns do not totally solve the problem.Lions could get used to it and thus there is a need for more research methods to fight lion and human conflict.”
The surrounding communities are pleased with the results.“We have noticed that the challenges from lions have gone down ... our animals are protected and the lions are kept away,”said Vincent Mangenyo, a local leader.
