Bethany Simpson, a pupil at St Columb Major Academy, Cornwall, bravely stepped in when her stepfather Robert Hoskins stopped breathing on March 15. She delivered CPR (心肺复苏法) before the ambulance arrived.
Bethany's mother Jane and Robert were watching TV in bed when both of them had fallen asleep, but Jane woke up and noticed Robert's breathing had become weak and hard. Jane quickly called 999 and followed the operator's advice, including moving him onto his side to make him more comfortable. But when Robert stopped breathing completely and the operator told her to give CPR, Jane completely froze.
“I panicked (恐慌) and said ‘I can't do it',” said Jane. “Fortunately, Bethany heard me scream, came into the bedroom and said ‘It's OK, Mum. I know what to do.' She was so confident and took charge.” Bethany performed CPR that kept Robert alive.
Robert, who is now recovering at home, said, “I would just like to sincerely thank St John Ambulance for teaching the children first aid. If it wasn't for them and Bethany, I wouldn't be here.” The ten year old says she doesn't believe she is a heroine. “I'm just glad my dad is still here,” she added.
Both Robert and Jane believe the government should ask all schools to teach first aid. “This incident just shows why it's important to teach everyone first aid — especially in schools,” said Jane. “Without my daughter and the training St John Ambulance gave her, Robert would be dead and I would be heartbroken. I'm so proud of Bethany and so grateful.”

I always looked forward to Thanksgiving. It was never just for my immediate family — my parents invited whoever else was left in the neighborhood. All stragglers (掉队者) were welcome. My mom made the big Americana Thanksgiving meal, though her prized side was a rutabaga (a large round yellow vegetable) dish that I only remember my dad eating, and not always willingly.
In November 2012, I wasn't going to make it to our home in Pass Christian, Miss. I had just been released from the hospital after spending 30 days in isolation (隔离) following a bone marrow transplant (骨髓移植). My only goal was to make it to 100 days post transplant — my survival depended on it.
During my journey to rebuild my immune system, my doctors required me to be home in New York with limited outside contact (接触). Hand wash and face masks were handed out to all visitors, and hugs were not allowed.
In early November, I got a call from my sisters, who live down South. They were planning on bringing a small group to come and stay with me for Thanksgiving. At first, I was hesitant. Disease had taken away my health and my holiday spirit. Without an appetite (食欲) and my hair, I couldn't imagine gathering around the table in a festive sweater. This would also be the first holiday without my mother, who passed away a week before my transplant. I felt a pressure to be joyful, but all I felt was sick. I was mourning my health, and I was mourning Momma.
Thanksgiving Day came; the doorbell rang; in stormed my family. I felt instant relief — they were warm, joyful and, above all, understanding. They didn't expect me to play host or carry the conversation. They simply wanted me to know that they were there for me.
Sitting at the dinner table, I was struck with a feeling — something Momma used to say after my father died. I was feeling happy sorrow. Thanksgiving didn't have to be sad — it just had to be different. At least for a while. So, just remember: this too shall pass, but now would be good!

Electric Shocks Can Be Fatal
Government statistics recently showed that in the UK, more than 3,000 people a year experience electric shocks in their homes. A smaller number of people are killed after contact with power lines outside the home. Electric shocks can cause a person's heart or breathing to stop, can also cause burns and are potentially fatal. It is essential for people to learn basic first aid techniques to deal with such emergencies.
What to do If you are the first person to reach someone who has had an electric shock, don't touch them! If they are still holding the appliance (家用电器) that has given them shock (e.g. a hair dryer), unplug it or turn off the power at its source. Under_no_circumstances_will_you_try_to_move_the_appliance_with_your_hand!
If you can't turn off the power, use a piece of wood, like a broom handle or a chair, to separate the victim from the appliance or the power source. You may even be able to do this with a folded newspaper.
The victim must remain lying down. If they are unconscious, victims should be placed on their side. But they should not be moved if there is a possibility of neck or spine injuries unless it is absolutely necessary. It is essential to maintain the victim's body heat, so make sure you cover him or her with a blanket before you do anything else. If the victim is not breathing, apply mouth?to?mouth resuscitation (恢复呼吸). Keep the victim's head low until professional help arrives. If the electric shock has been caused by an external power line, the dangers to the victim and to anybody providing first aid are much greater.

1.What kind of passage is it
A.An advertisement.

2.The underlined sentence in Para. 2 implies that ________.
A.you should move the appliance that caused it
B.you should pick up the appliance and turn off the electricity
C.it is very dangerous to touch the appliance with your hands
D.it is unnecessary to unplug the appliance with your
hands
解析:选C 句意理解题。根据文章第二段“If they are still holding the appliance (家用电器) that has given them shock (e.g. a hair dryer), unplug it or turn off the power at its source.”和第三段“If you can't turn off the power, use a piece of wood ...”可知正确选项为C。
3.When a person has got an electric shock, you should ________.
A.separate the victim from the appliance and let them sit up
B.keep the victim warm and help them breathe again
C.move the victim onto their side if they have got neck injuries
D.keep the victim's head high until professional help arrives

When I was in the fifth grade and Mr. Gardner asked a question, my hand would shoot up with great enthusiasm. After giving me a few chances, he would try to give other students a chance. My hand, though, would remain in the air, and after some time, I'd start waving it around. Then, there was the time when I entered drumming classes. But all we were allowed to do in the first class was practise one beat over and over again. I never went back.
I would have done terribly in the Stanford Marshmallow (果浆软糖) Experiment. In this classic study, researchers gave children a choice between one marshmallow right away and two later. The results showed that those who could wait 15 minutes ended up scoring 210 points higher on the SAT, an examination that American high school students take before they go to college.
So clearly, delaying gratification or bearing up under pain has its benefits. It needs patience. Patience keeps us from being stuck to ideas formed previously, and helps us let go of our strong interest in outcomes. We come to accept that we don't always or immediately know what is best, and learn to recognize that our reality is in constant changes. Patience improves our understanding of deeper truths and helps us expand our views.
The journey of patience is rooted in knowing that our present reality will finally give way to changes. But changes won't always happen when we think they should, and patience with ourselves comes from accepting that there are things we can control and things we can't. And though we must make great efforts to keep pushing the boundaries of our awareness and to improve our ability to rest comfortably in the present moment, how fast we develop isn't up to us.
That same fifth grader who couldn't wait to speak out answers now sees the importance of meeting questions with a heart of patience.
4.Why did the author wave his hand in class
A.To entertain himself.
B.To show his impatience.
C.To give other students a chance.
D.To let others know he was clever.
解析:选B 细节理解题。根据第一段可知,作者不停地挥舞手臂是因为举了一段时间手后,老师还不让他回答问题,他这样做是因为不耐烦了。
5.What's the purpose of the Stanford Marshmallow Experiment
A.To test children's concentration levels.
B.To test how children like marshmallows.
C.To test patience and its potential advantages.
D.To test the bond between patience and desire.
解析:选C 推理判断题。根据第二段中的“The results showed that those who could wait 15 minutes ended up scoring 210 points higher on the SAT”可知,这个果浆软糖实验的目的是为了测试耐心在孩子们的后期智力发展中可能存在的优势。
6.Which of the following can replace the underlined word “gratification” in Paragraph 3
A.Progress. B.Patience.
C.Judgement. D.Satisfaction.
解析:选D 词义猜测题。根据该词前的delaying可知,该词的意思与第二段中的“In this classic study, researchers gave children a choice between one marshmallow right away and two later”有关,根据该句可知,延迟的是满足感,故gratification的意思与satisfaction相近。
7.What is the main reason for people to have patience according to the text
A.Present reality.
B.Constant changes.
C.A lack of self control.
D.A strong interest in outcomes.
解析:选B 细节理解题。根据第三段中的“learn to recognize that our reality is in constant changes”和倒数第二段中的“The journey of patience is rooted in knowing that our present reality will finally give way to changes”可知,不断变化是我们需要有耐心的原因。PAGE

Meet Liam Mills, the first aid specialist who provides life saving support at festivals and events, and he's just 16 years old.
A bit young to be a first aider, aren't you
You might think that, but in fact I've been doing this for almost a year now. I already have a huge amount of valuable experience.
Why did you join the British Red Cross
I've always been interested in first aid, so when I saw some Red Cross volunteers at a local event I went over for a quick talk. After hearing what they had to say, I jumped_at the chance of joining.
What's the big attraction
As soon as you've treated an injured man, you will never look back. I've treated many types of injury now, from cut fingers to even heart disease cases. It's endlessly challenging and interesting.
What have you learned
I'm now a skilled volunteer, which means I have additional qualifications (资历) on top of my standard first aid certificate (证书). For example, I'm qualified to use Entonox (laughing gas) for pain management. First aid with the Red Cross is a whole lot more than just cleaning and dressing wounds.
Any stand?out memories
Once, my colleague and I attended a call. As we approached the scene, all I could see was someone lying perfectly still on the floor. Doctors in hospital emergency rooms (急诊室) often see accidental poisonings (中毒). A frightened parent arrives with a child who swallowed a cleaning liquid. Or perhaps the harmful substance is a medicine. Or it might be a product meant to kill insects. These are common causes of accidental poisoning.
In cases like this, seek medical help as soon as possible. Save the container of whatever caused the poisoning. And look on the container for information about anything that stops the effects of the poison. Save anything expelled from the mouth of the victim. That way, doctors can examine it.
Millions of people know how to give abdominal thrusts (腹部按压) to save a person choking on something trapped in the throat. The American Red Cross says a rescuer should first hit the person on the back five times between the shoulder bones. If the airway is still blocked, the Red Cross suggests pushing hard five times along the victim's abdomen. You can do these abdominal thrusts by getting directly behind a sitting or standing person.
The Mayo Clinic health centers suggest several steps if bleeding (出血) is severe. First, if possible, remove dirt from the wound and press on it with a clean cloth or piece of clothing. In the past, people were advised to stop severe bleeding with a tourniquet (止血带). But experts now say tourniquets are dangerous because they can crush (挤压) major arteries and nerves. If a wound seems infected, let the victim rest. Physical activity can spread the infection. Treat the wound with a mixture of salt and water until medical help arrives.
To learn more about first aid, ask a hospital or an organization like a Red Cross or a Red Crescent Society for information. Training may be offered in your area.
If you know first aid methods, you can be calmer and more helpful in case of emergency.

We've heard people say that we shouldn't worry too much about the future. But, this saying doesn't hold true in the technological world. Here, you always need to think about the future, or else you'll miss out being in the digital age! There are so many new inventions that come up daily, which help in making our lives better and easier.
The iPod we use daily was once a far fetched thought of Mr.Jobs, which has become a reality today. Similarly, when television was launched, we thought nothing could beat this invention. Then came cable television, and now it's the age of digital television. Similarly, until a few years back, 3D was limited to movies, but today, we have 3D blueprints, 3D graphics, and 3D television sets as well. All these inventions were just a prediction by their inventors, but they later, went on to become a part of our lives. Similar predictions can be made for the future.
For example, how about having robots that understand our instructions by simply speaking to them We can talk with these robots regularly and simply instruct them to perform a particular task. If you want tea, you can simply require your robot to make you one. These robots can be useful in industrial fields as well. For example, you can simply ask the robot to switch on the manufacturing line.
If wastes keep increasing in the present fashion, the future will see many problems related to pollution. So what about having a waste recycling machine that produces notebooks Yes, I'm not talking about the regular recycling machines that give us raw material we need to put to effective use. If we build recycling machines that produce a particular product out of the waste, it'll do much help to the environment as well.
This list can go on and on. Our imagination has no limits and so does technology. Who knows, may be one of these ideas may become a reality in the near future!
