Every time you go shopping, the vegetables and fruit look so attractive that you wish you could buy all of them. Some people are lucky and can grow the fruit and vegetables in the gardens that they have. While getting fresh vegetables, they can also achieve great cost cutting.
Mushrooms are expensive and can also go bad very quickly. Mushrooms can also be grown easily in a dark environment. In fact, it's better than growing other vegetables since you really don't need an outdoor space. A special type of soil that is good for growing mushrooms is easily available.
Actually, mushrooms aren't even vegetables; they are fungi (真菌) and for this reason, you don't even require sunlight to grow them. Well, how does one go about growing mushrooms You could always Google “growing mushrooms” and you will find a number of mushroom growing kits (成套工具) available online that are effective and not very expensive either.
Mushrooms can be added to any dish that you cook. Simply use them in pizza, salad and anything that you pretty much want. Grow mushrooms in your own house and use them whenever you want to. Fresh mushrooms are tastier than the ones that are stored in your refrigerator.
If you have had a really good crop of mushrooms, then you can even store them. Ideally you should use the white variety of the mushrooms. Simply pick them, slice them and put them on a cookie sheet in a freezer. When they are frozen, just put them in a zip lock and you can use them when you want to. They give a really great taste to the dish that you are making. Thaw (解冻) them before you use them.
You should try growing mushrooms, since it's cost effective. Furthermore, you can eat the fresh mushrooms any time that you want.

Fishermen from the Brazilian town of Laguna have developed a unique symbiotic (共生的) relationship with dolphins: they rely on the intelligent creatures to help them catch fish. Studies have shown that there's a particular group of about 20 bottlenose dolphins that work alongside the fishermen, while the rest of the local dolphins prefer to look for food on their own.
The dolphins work together to drive groups of fish towards the fishermen. They then use head or fin signals to warn the fishermen about when and where the nets should be thrown. The system works well for both parties: neither could survive without the other. The fishermen get to catch all the fish they need, while most of the escaped fish swim right into the dolphins' mouths. The water is so dark near Laguna that the fishermen could never catch fish as efficiently without the dolphins' help. That's why they only fish when dolphins show up.
“About 200 local fishermen are almost entirely dependent on the dolphins for catching fish,” study researcher Fábio Daura Jorge said. “The fishermen do not fish without the assistance of the dolphins and know the individual animals from their natural marks and can recognize them by eye.”
Interestingly, the researchers discovered three different social networks of dolphins in Laguna, only one of which cooperate (合作) with the fishermen. The cooperation might be a learned behavior characteristic, because nothing in the environment actually stops other dolphins from helping the fishermen as well. Researchers believe that the behavior is passed down from mother dolphins to their babies, through social learning. Similarly, elder fishermen teach their children how to work with the dolphins.
This unique form of cooperative fishing has been going on for at least 120 years, as proven by a 19th century letter that mentions the special dolphins of Laguna, but no one knows exactly how it started.

To country walkers, they are the plants to be avoided. But to gardeners, it appears that stinging nettles (大荨麻) may be attractive as they are now being sold for £7.99 to those who wish to boost the wildlife in their flowerbeds.
The Gardeningexpress.co.uk website sells stinging nettles in its “weeds (杂草) and wildlife Plants” section, and says supplies have already been snapped up (抢购) by eager buyers.
The product description tells gardeners: “Many people are now planting these in their gardens for wildlife. They are important food for the caterpillars (幼虫) of red admirals, peacocks, and tortoiseshell butterflies. If you live in the town and there are not wildlife friendly plants in your garden, this one has to be your first choice.”
It also suggests the nettles could make a “healthy snack” for people as the plant is rich in vitamins A and C, iron, potassium (钾), manganese (锰) and calcium (钙). They can be used to make a delicious soup.
Chris Bonnet from the website told the Daily Mail: “Some call them weeds but we don't want to hurt their feelings. After all, a weed is only a plant in the wrong place. For gardeners who want to do their bit for the nation's wildlife they're a must.”
“Also available on the site are dandelion plants for £3.99 each and buttercups for £5.99. Although many gardeners are trying to remove dandelion plants and buttercups from their lawns, supplies of the dandelions are also said to have been snapped up. Buyers are advised they should be planted to provide yellow flowers.”
Mr Bonnet added: “While plants such as buttercups and dandelions may seem like weeds in the middle of a lawn, if they are planted in a flowerbed they can look beautiful and really make a garden beautiful. Demand has been surprising. We are having to clear extra space in our nursery so we can grow more.”

If you have ever been left wondering why your emails are riddled (充斥着) with grammatical errors, or why you can never quite find the right phrase, it may be because you are typing with both hands.
Our vocabulary becomes richer and our writing style becomes more fluent when we type using just one hand, scientists have found. “Typing can be too fluent or too fast, and it can actually weaken the writing process,” said Srdan Medimorec, the lead author of the study conducted at the department of psychology at the University of Waterloo, Canada. “It seems that what we write is a product of the interaction (互动) between our thoughts and the tools we use to express them.”
Using text analysis software, researchers asked 103 university students to write essays under different conditions, using one hand to type and using both hands to type. The software was used to analyze (分析) elements of the essays, such as range of vocabulary, sentence complexity and the cohesion (衔接) of the writing.
Researchers found that participants' vocabulary became more advanced when they typed with one hand rather than two. The research team said that by slowing our writing down, typing one handed allows more time for an internal (内在的) word search, resulting in a larger variety of words.
In contrast, fast typists might just write the first word that comes to mind. However, it is important not to slow typing down too much. Those who typed essays one handed in the current study slowed down to about the speed of handwriting.
This is the first study to show that changing people's typing can make their writing get better. The researchers suggested that the speed of writing could affect writing quality regardless of the tools used, whether they are computers, or pen and paper, although further research would be required to prove that idea.

6.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage
A.The study was carried out in 103 universities.
B.The researchers drew the conclusion by interviewing students about their feelings in the writing process.
C.The typing speed should be as slow as possible.
D.There is no previous study related to the topic before.
解析:选D 细节理解题。根据最后一段第一句“This is the first study to show that changing people's typing can make their writing get better.”可知,这一首次研究表明了改变人们的输入方法会使他们的写作更好。据此可以判断,以前没有涉及这个话题的研究。
7.What is the author's attitude to the research according to the passage
A.Objective. B.Doubtful.
C.Critical. D.Supportive.
解析:选A 观点态度题。根据最后一段“The researchers suggested that the speed of writing could affect writing quality regardless of the tools used, whether they are computers, or pen and paper, although further research would be required to prove that idea.”可以判断,作者对这项研究持客观的态度。doubtful意为“怀疑的”;critical意为“批评的”;supportive意为“支持的”,都与语境不符。
8.Which is the best title of the passage
A.How to become a good writer
B.Typing with both hands could make you a worse writer
C.Slower typing, fewer mistakes
D.Elements weakening the writing process
解析:选B 标题归纳题。本文主要说明使用双手打字容易造成语法或短语错误,从而影响文章的质量。PAGE

A
After giving up his job as a designer for Ralph Lauren in 2011, Foster Huntington started to have a nomadic (流浪的) lifestyle, wandering around the country in a car. To make ends meet, he worked as a photographer and blogger and even published a book called Home Is Where You Park It about his lifestyle. But all good things have to come to an end. In 2014, the young man was ready to settle down in a more permanent home.
For most people that would be an apartment or single family home. But that was not for the free spirited Huntington. Instead, he decided to build a tree house, not a common one, but a paradise (乐园) that provides him with breathtaking views, some wood fired hot tubs and even a skate park!
Called Cinder Cone Treehouse, it sits on Huntington's hometown in Skamania, Washington and consists of two separate structures that are connected by a bridge. Built safely between big trees that sit at the top of a hill, the wooden house offers him amazing views of the surrounding wilderness. The lower structure called the studio, serves as Huntington's office, kitchen, and guest house, while the octagon cabin that lies across, functions as his bedroom.
Measuring 220 square feet each, the rooms are not like a palace in our imagination. But they provide all the comfort of home and work well for Huntington, who has a preference for living in small spaces.
While the tree house is certainly cool, what is even more amazing are the wood burning hot tubs lying around the area and the skate park that was carved (侵蚀) out from a nearby hill.
Of course, a little paradise like this is not easy or cheap. Cinder Cone Treehouse took Huntington and his construction team a year to build, and cost 170,000 dollars — and that didn't include the price of the land!
But the photographer and blogger who says his surroundings inspire him to be more creative is not concerned. He is living his dream. Huntington hopes he can encourage others to do the same and has even published a book that outlines his experience and serves as a guide for those who wish to build their own dream tree house.

My son Daniel's love for surfing began at the age of 13. After school he wore his wet suit, walked out beyond the surf line and waited to be challenged by his three to six foot companions. Daniel's love of the ride was tested one fateful afternoon.
“Your son's been in an accident,” the lifeguard (救生员) reported over the phone to my husband Mike. “When he surfaced to the top of the water, the point of the board was heading toward his eye.” Mike rushed him to the emergency room. He received 26 stitches (缝针) from the corner of his eye to the bridge of his nose.
I was on an airplane flying home from a speaking arrangement while Dan's eye was being stitched. Mike drove directly to the airport after they left the doctor's office. He greeted me at the gate and told me Dan was waiting in the car. “Daniel?” I questioned. I remember thinking the waves must have been awful that day. “He's been in an accident, but he's going to be fine.” A travelling working mother's worst nightmare had come true.
I sobbed telling Daniel how awful I felt about not being there when the lifeguard called. “It's okay, Mom,” he comforted me. “You don't know how to surf anyway.” “What?” I asked, confused by his reason. “I'll be fine. The doctor says I can go back in the water in eight days.” Was he out of his mind For the next seven days he kept pressing me to let him go back on the board. One day after I repeated “No” to him for the 100th time, he said, “Mom, you taught us never to give up what we love.” I gave in.
I was tested in my own backyard on an important principle that I teach audiences in distant cities: Passionate (热情的) people hug what they love and never give up.

There was a time when a trip to the supermarket in the United States often ended with a seemingly simple question from the cashier, “Paper or plastic?” Well, which type of bag would you choose
While both types of bags have some influence on the environment, it has long been supposed that paper bags are kinder. They are made from a renewable source, are broken down easily, burn without giving off thick smoke and can be recycled. However, the producing process behind paper bags uses more energy than that of plastic ones. How can this be true
Studies show that paper bag production requires four times as much energy as plastic bag production. And the amount of water used to make them is twenty times higher. Besides, the influence on forests is very serious. It takes about fourteen million trees to produce ten billion paper bags, which happen to be the number of bags used in the United States yearly. In terms of recycling, the idea that paper bags are more environment friendly than plastic ones can be quickly discarded. Research shows it requires about 98% less energy to recycle plastic than it does to recycle paper.
Even though paper bags might be more harmful than plastic ones, plastic still seems to be considered as the more harmful of the two by governments. In Ireland, for example, a tax has been introduced to discourage the use of plastic bags. People have to pay 22 cents for every plastic bag, and as a result, their use has dropped quickly.
There's no doubt that it makes more sense to reuse these bags. However, we don't seem to be doing that at present. That may be because they fall apart quickly. If so, cloth bags are a better choice, but still, their production also has a bad influence on the environment. So what to do How should we answer the question of “Paper or plastic?” It seems that we first need to ask ourselves one more general question: “What can I do to help the environment?”
