Walter Scott was born on August 15, 1771 in Edinburgh, Scotland. At the age of two, Scott suffered from polio (小儿麻痹症) which left him with a limp (跛行). He was sent to live with relatives to try and find a cure. In 1783 he attended the University of Edinburgh. He had to leave for a year because of health problems. In 1786, Scott worked in his father's law firm. He returned to the university in 1789 to study law, graduating in 1792. The same year he became a lawyer and was accepted into the Faculty of Advocates (苏格兰律师公会).
Scott did some translation work from 1796-1798. In 1799, Scott became sheriff deputy of Selkirkshire,a post which he held until he died. In 1800, Scott rewrote a ballad (民歌) collection called Minstrelsy of the Scottish Border. In 1805, he became part owner of The Ballantyne Press which had published his The Eve of St. John in 1799. His poem The Lay of the Last Minstrel was published that same year and became very popular. He was a co founder of the Quarterly Review, a literary (文学的) journal. Scott continued to write poems and ballads, each one becoming more popular than the last. In 1810, The Lady of the Lake was published and sold 25,000 copies in less than 9 months.
Scott moved his family to Abbotsford in 1812. In 1813, The Ballantyne Press collapsed, which caused Scott to have serious financial problems. In 1814, he wrote a novel called Waverley to earn money and it became the most successful English novel of the time. He went on to write 26 novels in the series.
In 1826, Scott faced financial ruin again when his publisher failed, which caused him to work even harder. In 1830, he began suffering from diseases and he died at home on September 21, 1832.

Basketball star LeBron James made $33 million last year. And that probably doesn't surprise anyone. We're used to watching professional (职业的) athletes make and spend millions of dollars.
But there was a time when professional athletes could barely buy a car. In the 1940s, most basketball players made between $4,000 and $5,000 a year. That's about $50,000 in today's money.
For most sports teams in 1950, there were two main ways to make money. They sold tickets to games and popcorn (爆米花) in the stadium. For fans, it was a good deal. You could see a Brooklyn Dodgers baseball game for 60 cents. For players, the deal wasn't so great. There wasn't much money to go around. So salaries (薪水) stayed low. In some professional sports, players couldn't spend the off season working out. They had to get second jobs so they could pay the rent (租金).
In the 1960s, television changed everything. In 1950, only 1 in 10 American homes had TVs. By 1960, 9 in 10 homes had TVs. And people sure loved watching sports.
At first, team owners were worried about TV. They thought fans wouldn't pay to come to the stadium anymore.
But the TV networks paid millions of dollars for the right to show games. That's when sports teams started to get rich.
Finally, the teams shared their wealth with players. In 1974, several baseball teams wanted a player named Catfish Hunter, who chose to play for the New York Yankees. They paid him $1 million just for picking their team.
Since then, athletes have only gotten richer. In 2018, the highest paid player in baseball will make $33 million. In basketball, the average salary is about $7 million a year.
Are sports stars worth the money Many fans seem to think so. They will pay crazy prices to cheer for their favorite players.
语篇解读:本文是说明文。文章介绍了职业运动员是如何变得富有的。

6.What would fans think of paying 60 cents for a Brooklyn Dodgers baseball game in 1950
A.It was unfair to players.
B.It was a bit expensive.
C.It was cheap at the price.
D.It was less attractive to them.
解析:选C 推理判断题。由第三段中的“For fans, it was a good deal. You could see a Brooklyn Dodgers baseball game for 60 cents”可知,1950年,花60美分看一场布鲁克林道奇队的球赛是很划算的,故推断球迷认为60美分的票价并不高。
7.What influence did TV have on sports in the 1960s
A.Sports became a big business.
B.People were more willing to play sports.
C.More and more fans came to the stadium.
D.Tickets to games became more expensive.
解析:选A 推理判断题。由倒数第四段“But the TV networks paid millions of dollars for the right to show games. That's when sports teams started to get rich”可知,20世纪六十年代电视的普及使体育运动成了一项利润丰厚的产业。

A.How sports stars make money.
B.Why fans are crazy about sports stars.
C.Why sports become more and more popular.
D.How professional athletes started getting rich.

One of the toughest things to do when getting to know people professionally is remembering their names. And it's also an extremely useful skill to have in your daily life. 1 Here are some tricks to remembering any name:
Ask for their business card.
When you meet someone in a working situation, ask for their business card. Write down a few notes about the person and his appearance so you can tell him from the other people you've met. 2
3
At the end of your conversation, ask the person you're speaking with to repeat his name just to make sure you have it right. Hearing it once more will help you memorize it as well.
Visualize (视觉化) an image.
4 For example, if you meet a Catherine, then try to connect the image of a cat with her. That way, when you meet the woman again, the image of a cat will arise, and it will be easy to work out what her name is.
Inject it into conversation.
Say the person's name as often as you can during the conversation without getting him/her awkward. For example, inserting the name casually in sentences like “I really agree with you, John” or “ 5 ” will do wonders for memorizing names.
A.You can always turn to the card for help if you forget his or her name.
B.Attach an image to the name.
C.Repeat it in your mind.
D.Showing a stranger you remembered his/her name can leave a good impression.

A few months ago, when I was reading a story to my 4 year old granddaughter, she looked away and said that my breath was terrible. I didn't think much of it until it happened again the next week, and it wasn't long after I had brushed my teeth.
I've always kept up with oral hygiene (口腔卫生), so bad breath wasn't something that plagued me. I didn't notice it myself, but I asked my dentist about it soon after. According to him, bad breath is very common among old people. One of the major problems is that less saliva (唾液) is produced as we get older, which helps clean our mouth.
In the past, I've used plenty of products that I thought would help with bad breath, but I didn't understand the real problem. Most ordinary mouthwashes that promise to kill bacteria (细菌) and give you fresh breath contain alcohol (酒精). They help fight bacteria, but it's only about an hour before your breath starts to stink (发臭) again. Even worse, the alcohol dries out your mouth, actually causing bad breath.
My dentist suggested an alcohol free mouthwash. I did some research, and then tried a few products. SmartMouth Advanced Clinical Formula offered all of the advantages I was looking for, including a promise of 12 hours of fresh breath every time I used the product. It is alcohol free, so it doesn't dry my mouth, but it still kills bacteria.
I knew SmartMouth was unusual because it was the only mouthwash on the shelf that came in a box, with two bottles inside. You combine the two in one cup right before using: that's what makes it so different from other mouthwashes. It does provide long lasting fresh breath. This step “activates” the mouthwash, and the results speak for themselves. My granddaughter lovingly tells me that I'm no longer stinky.

Look at a map of Spain and point at the center. You'll locate the country's capital and one of Europe's most beautiful cities: Madrid. This popular destination is considered a city of contrasts with its abundant historic sites, resting in the shadows of modern skyscrapers.
History
This city of over 3 million people is proud of Western Europe's largest royal palace, and some consider it to be Madrid's most beautiful building.
Inside the Royal Palace 2,800 rooms are decorated in glory with museum quality furniture and artwork. Tourists can tour 50 of these large and splendid rooms.
Art
The internationally respected Prado Museum is the largest and most impressive art gallery in Spain. Founded in 1819, it is filled with works of art that feature the world's most comprehensive collection of Spanish paintings.
Shopping
Madrid has some of Europe's best shopping malls, and potential buyers love to look through the stores looking for bargains. But for 500 years, shoppers have gathered to an extremely large outdoor flea market known as El Rastro where they find everything from antiques to CDs.
Entertainment
No trip to Madrid is complete without seeing a performance of Spain's famous art form, flamenco. Every day, flamenco performers sing, dance or play the guitar in small cafes and grand theaters alike.
Food
Madrid has a wide variety of restaurants, but because the Spanish typically eat late at about 9 or 10 pm, it's difficult to find good dinner food earlier. If you get hungry before then, the best solution is to try a tapas bar where light snacks are served. Be sure to try the jamon, dry cured ham — Spain is famous for it.
Time for a break
After a day of touring, relax in 350 acre Retiro Park with its beautiful gardens, fish pond and lake. It is the perfect place to reflect on all you've enjoyed in this impressive Spanish city.

Disease, poverty, hate, love — Charles Dickens' stories opened his readers' eyes to the most important themes of his age. Two hundred years later, his stories still speak volumes across the world, proving that Dickens' legacy (遗产) was far greater than just “great literature”.
February 7 marks the 200th anniversary of the writer's birthday. To mark this date, BBC writer Alex Hudson listed six things Dickens gave the modern world. Let's take a look at two of them.
A White Christmas
Dickens is described as “the man who invented Christmas” — not the religious festival, but the cultural aspects that we associate with the festive season today.
In the early 19th century, Christmas was barely worth mentioning, according to critic and writer Leigh Hunt. The committee which ran the Conservative Party even held ordinary business meetings on Christmas Day — unthinkable in the West nowadays, when everyone but the most necessary workers takes at least three days off.
Many people believe that Dickens' popular descriptions of the festive period became a blueprint for generations to come. In his classic novel, A Christmas Carol, he not only put forward the idea of snow at Christmas, but also painted a picture of glowing warmth — “home enjoyments, affections and hopes”.
In his biography of Dickens, Peter Ackroyd wrote: “Dickens can be said to have almost single handedly created the modern idea of Christmas.”
“Dickensian” poverty
Dickens was one of the first to take an honest look at the underclass and the poor of Victorian London.
He helped popularize the term “red_tape” to describe situations where people in power use needless amounts of bureaucracy (官僚作风) in a way that particularly hurts the weaker and poorer members of society.
“Dickensian” has now become a powerful word for describing an unacceptable level of poverty. In 2009, when the president of the Association of Teachers and Lecturers in the UK wanted to talk about poverty in some areas of Britain, she did not use words like “terrible” or “horrific”, but rather described it as “life mirroring the times of Dickens”.

What do Tom Sawyer and Jumping Frogs have in common Stories about both of them were created by one man: Mark Twain. Twain was four years old when his family moved to Hannibal, Missouri, located on the west bank of the Mississippi. Twain grew up there and was fascinated with (使……入迷) life along the river — the steamboats, the giant lumber (木头) rafts, and the people who worked on them.
The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County is one of Twain's best loved short stories, and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is one of his most famous novels. Both these works are celebrated by events held during National Tom Sawyer Days, which originated in the late 1950s and became national in the 1960s. Children enter their frogs in the jumping contest during National Tom Sawyer Days. There's also a fence painting contest to see who can paint the fastest. The idea for this contest comes from a scene in Tom Sawyer, in which Tom has been told to paint the fence in front of the house he lives in. It's a beautiful day, and he would rather be doing anything else. As his friends walk by, he makes them believe that it's fun to paint, and they join in the “fun”.By the end of the day, the fence has three coats of paint!
Although the story of Tom Sawyer is a fiction (虚构的事), it's based on facts. If you go to Hannibal, you'll see the white fence, which still stands at Twain's boyhood home.
