From early times, man has been interested in art. People have often worked together to collect and save the world's art treasures (珍宝).
Fine art treasures from many countries are kept in an art museum called the Louvre (卢浮宫) in Paris, France. The works of art have been collected by the people of France over many centuries. It is the biggest art museum in the world.
The Louvre has not always been a museum. The first building was a fort (堡垒) with high walls and a round tower. It had a moat (护城河) to keep out the enemies.
Over the years, the number of buildings around the Castle grew. By 1350, the castle no longer needed a fort. The Louvre became a palace home for French kings and queens.
During times of peace, new treasures were brought in. During the days of war, many treasures were stolen, and the buildings were damaged.
When Francis Ⅰ became King of France in 1515, he brought in many artists from other countries. One of the artists was Leonardo da Vinci from Italy. Da Vinci's Mona Lisa (《蒙娜·丽莎》) is the best known painting in the museum today.
In 1793, the Louvre became a public museum, just as it is now. It is a place where art treasures are kept for everyone to enjoy. Every year millions of people from all over the world come to the Louvre to see the masterpieces.

If you think about World Heritage Sites, you probably think of places connected with ancient art and culture, historical buildings and monuments. And of course, many of these are on the World Heritage List (WHL) (世界遗产名录).But the WHL contains a lot of sites that are not so obvious. Let's look at a few of them.
Robben Island in South Africa
This island was used through the centuries as a prison, a hospital and a military base. But it's probably most famous as a maximum security prison for political prisoners in the twentieth century. Borders of France and Spain
This is an area of great natural beauty and the mountains have many interesting geological formations. But it is also an area of small farms. People there still use a type of agriculture that used to be common in mountainous areas of Europe but has almost completely disappeared in modern times.
The city of Brasilia, Brazil
Brasilia is a capital city that was created from nothing in 1956.The WHL calls it “a landmark in the history of town planning”.The different areas of the city and the buildings themselves were all designed at the same time carefully. Every part of the city shows the ideas of the planer and architect (建筑师).
Simien National Park, Ethiopia
Simien National Park was one of the first sites to be listed in 1978. It is one of the highest mountain areas in Africa, and the WHL calls it “one of the most spectacular landscapes in the world”.It is also important for its wildlife. The population of some rare animals is getting smaller and smaller.

There are many places to go on safari (观赏野生动物) in Africa, but riding a horse through the flooded waters of Botswana's Okavango Delta must rank as one of the world's most exciting wildlife journeys.
Several safari camps operate as the base for this adventure, providing unique rides twice a day to explore deep into the delta. The camps have excellent horses, professional guides and lots of support workers. They have a reputation for providing a great riding experience.
The morning ride, when the guides take you to beautiful, shallow lakes full of water lilies, tends to be more active. It is unlike any other riding experience. With rainbows forming in the splashing water around you and the sound of huge drops of water bouncing off your body and face, it is truly exciting. You are very likely to come across large wild animals too. On horseback it is possible to get quite close to elephants, giraffes and many other animals. The sense of excitement and tension levels rise suddenly though, as does your heart rate, as you move closer to them.
In the evening, rides are usually at a more relaxed and unhurried pace, with golden light streaming across the grassy delta and the animals coming out to eat and drink. Sedate though they are, rides at this time of day are still very impressive. As the sun's rays pass through the dust kicked up by the horses, the romance of Africa comes to life.
Back at the camp you can kick off your boots and enjoy excellent food and wine. Looking back on your day, you will find it hard to deny that a horseback Safari is as close as you will ever come to answering the call of the wild.

Say you are a 17th century construction (建筑) worker who's worked long and hard to build a splendid tower for the dead wife of your emperor (皇帝).
Now say that the emperor orders you to cut off your fingertips so you can never build another one. Yes, that is the Taj Mahal, one of the most famous buildings in the world. And the tale (传说) behind the construction is just as impressive (印象深刻的) as the building itself.
First, there's the emperor of northern India, Shah Jehan, also called the King of the World. In 1612, Shah Jehan married Mumtaz Mahal. Madly in love, they had 14 children over the next 20 years. But then sadness came. As Mumtaz was about to give birth to child Number 14, she said she had heard her unborn baby cry out. It was a sign of death. And as Mumtaz lay dying, she asked Jehan to build a lasting memorial (纪念物) to celebrate their love.
When the heartbroken Jehan appeared eight days after his wife's death, his people were shocked to see that his coal black hair had turned snow white.
Putting away his sadness, Jehan ordered his wife's dying wish be carried out (执行). More than 20,000 workers labored nearly 22 years to complete the construction. In 1653, Jehan placed Mumtaz's remains in the center under the building.
And then, son Number five, Aurangzeb, murdered his brothers and took over the power from his aging father. Jehan lived the rest of his days — eight years, to be exact — imprisoned not far from the Taj Mahal. Jehan was only allowed to climb onto the top of his prison to see the timeless treasure from a distance (从远处). But never again would he be allowed to visit it — until he was buried next to his wife.
Today 25,000 people visit the Taj Mahal each day. Though the reason for building the tower was a strange, sad story, those who see its breathtaking beauty are reminded (使想起) of the happiness that inspired (激发……的灵感) its construction.

Visitors to central Austin, Texas, would be easy to miss a small, old house called the O. Henry Museum. William Sydney Porter (1862-1910) — better known as O. Henry, was one of America's best loved writers of short stories. Beginning in 1893, he lived here. It was saved from destruction, moved, and turned into a museum in 1934. The museum is a good way to learn about the interesting life of him.
William Porter rented this house and lived with his wife Athol and daughter Margaret for about two years. Many objects in the museum belonged to the Porters. Others did not, but are in the house to recreate the way it looked during their lifetime.
Porter worked at a pharmacy, farm, land office and bank. He also loved words and writing. The museum has special proof of Porter's love of language — his dictionary. It's said that he read every word in it. Porter started a small publication called The Rolling Stone. He wasn't being published early on, so he published himself. His funny stories, poems, and drawings were published in the magazine. But it was too costly to continue for long, so he closed the project after about one year.
Other troubles would lead the Porters to leave Austin. Porter was accused of financial wrongdoing at the bank and lost his job. Fearing a trial, he fled the country. But he returned because his wife was dying. After her death, he faced trial and was found guilty. He served three and a half years in a federal prison in Ohio.
Porter would keep his time in prison a secret. But there was one good thing about it. It provided him with time to write. By the time of his release, he had published 14 stories and was becoming well known as O. Henry.
Porter would later move to New York City and find great success there. He published over 380 stories in the last eight years of his life.

The Leshan Giant Buddha is a statue of Maitreya (弥勒大佛) in sitting posture. The Buddha is located in Sichuan Province, facing Min River, Qingyi River, and Dadu River. In December, 1996, the Buddha was included by UNESCO on the list of the World Heritage (世界遗产录).
The statue was begun in the year 713 in the Tang Dynasty, and finished in the year 803.The Buddha is 71 meters high. The eight meter long instep (脚背) is big enough for one hundred people to sit on and the 28 meter wide shoulder is large enough to be a basketball playground.
A monk called Hai Tong is connected with the Buddha forever. At that time, wild waters brought out many boat accidents and people just put the disaster down to the presence of a water spirit. So Hai Tong decided to make a statue beside the river thinking that the Buddha would bring the water spirit under control. After 20 years' begging from door to door,he finally collected enough money for the plan. When some local government officials tried to get this amount of money,Hai Tong said that they could get his eyeball but not the money raised for the Buddha. After he dug out his eyeball, these officials ran away scared. The project was half done when Hai Tong passed away, and two of his disciples (门徒) continued the work.
