More and more birds are flying to settle at Qinghai Lake, one of the highest inland lakes in China, thanks to the protection efforts of local government. Covering an area of over 4,000 square kilometers, Qinghai Lake is also the country's biggest salt lake.
Located in Northwest China's Qinghai Province, the lake is famous for the two islands at its northwest point — Cormorant Island and Egg Island. The two islands have plenty of floating grass and various schools of fish, offering rich food sources to birds. The islands have become a paradise for different kinds of groups of birds and have been called “Bird Islands”.
Each March and April, when ice and snow covering the Qinghai Tibet Plateau (高原) start to melt, over 20 kinds of birds fly to the Bird Islands to lay eggs. During the months, flocks of birds cover the whole sky over the islands and bird eggs can be found everywhere. Visitors can hear the singing of birds from miles away. These have become a world famous symbol of the lake.
To protect this paradise for birds and support calls for ecological protection, China set up the Qinghai Lake Natural Protection Zone at the end of 1997. Meanwhile, the State has pointed out the Bird Islands and Spring Bay of Qinghai Lake were central protection zones.
Inspectors and conservators often patrol (巡逻) the lake, enriching local residents' knowledge of related laws and spreading knowledge about animal protection to visitors. They are making great efforts to call on people to love and protect the birds. At the same time, they have built special fences around the island area, to prevent wolves, foxes and other carnivorous animals, as well as illegal hunters from breaking up the birds' building nests, laying eggs and breeding (繁殖). As a result, more and more birds are coming to the islands for sheltering and breeding.

Global warming, greenhouse gases, destruction of forests, pollution of oceans, air and land are all harming the environment that wild animals depend on to live.
What is happening to wild animals
Many wild animals today are endangered or facing dying out as they struggle to adapt (适应) to the changing environment.Changes in the environment are not something new.The environment has been changing for millions of years and many wild animals have adapted to the changes, but now the changes are happening too quickly for them to adapt to and they are in danger of dying out completely.Sometimes the protection of animals has come too late and many wild animals have become rare or have moved away because of the damage by humans.
Why should we care
If all the forests were cleared and the oceans and air were polluted, the balance of nature would be destroyed and the Earth would not be able to support any life.Humans as well as animals would not survive. It is in our own interest to care about the environment and protect it.
What is being done to protect wild animals
The best way to save endangered animals is to provide safe places for them to live in.In many countries it is now illegal to hunt endangered animals or sell products made from their bodies. Many countries have set up protected areas called wildlife reserves where animals can live and increase in number. Many areas in Africa have been made into wildlife parks to save the amazing wild animals that live there.
Now many wild animals are being fed in zoos and then successfully put back into these areas. To help animals survive is important; we can understand how animals live in the wild and the importance of the environments where they live.

George was a game warden (猎物繁殖和保护区的管理员) in Kenya. One day, he found three tiny lions beside a dead lioness. They were so little that their eyes had not yet opened. Sadly, he took the three little lions and drove back home.
When George got out of the car with the baby lions, his wife Joy Adamson immediately took over. Joy had cared for many young animals over the years, but she had never tried to raise baby lions! However, she was determined to save these babies.
The lions grew rapidly. But as the lion grew bigger and stronger, Joy and George realized they could not keep three large lions. They decided to present two of the lions to a zoo; they would keep the smallest lion, which they named Elsa.
Joy and George taught Elsa to hunt and to protect herself. Elsa liked to play with her human friends, but as Elsa grew to her adult size, this play became dangerous. More than once, Elsa knocked Joy to the ground, scratching (抓伤) her. Joy and George both realized that it was time to find Elsa a new home. They knew she needed a wild home where she could live the life she was born to lead. Finally, Joy and George decide to set Elsa free in Meru Park at the foot of Mt. Kenya.
Elsa never forgot Joy and George. Whenever they camped nearby, Elsa would come to visit, rubbing her head against their legs in greeting.
Joy missed Elsa, but was happy that she had made a successful life as a wild lion. Joy wrote a book about Elsa, Born Free, which became an international bestseller. Joy traveled all over the world, talking about the importance of saving the wild animals of the world.
Joy lived out her life in Africa, working with wild animals. She wrote more books about her experiences. Her heartfelt interest in animals and her great love for Elsa helped inspire (激发) a worldwide movement to protect wildlife. For Joy Adamson, there was no greater gift than the beauty and spirit of wild animals, living free.

Sometimes I thought I was a good mom. Sometimes, I felt like I spent the day nagging (唠叨) my kids rather than knowing them, especially my strong willed son. But a family get together taught me an important lesson.
My son was ten at the time and we were on a late night family car trip to Cleveland for the get together the next day. I was taking my turn at_the_wheel while my husband and my small daughter slept. My son, full of energy, was wide awake in the back seat. I needed to stay awake, too, and I didn't want to play the radio, so I asked him to talk to me to help keep me awake. “Sure, Mom,” he said, “what do you want to discuss?” I told him I'd talk about anything he wanted to talk about. “How about frogs?” he asked. I said that would be fine, and for the next hour or so we talked about the differences between frogs and toads (蟾蜍), and sports — basketball and soccer. He was quite interested when we talked about Michael Jordan and Michael Jackson and how they got to be so famous. Now and then he would stop, but we'd continue to talk as I drove down the dark road.
About an hour and a half later, when I finally arrived, the bright lights woke everyone, and the magic of our discussion disappeared. But I knew that I had taken the first step toward changing a bad listening habit with someone I love very much.

Some locals of Venice, Florida, were in for a surprise when they met their new neighbors this summer. A family of coyotes (丛林狼) had moved into the yard of an empty house on their street.
“Coyotes are a hot topic around here,” says Pam DeFouw, a wildlife rescue expert in Venice. “We get lots of calls about them.” A hundred years ago, you wouldn't have seen a coyote in Florida. For centuries, coyotes lived mainly in the grasslands of what is now the western United States. Now, it's not unusual to see a coyote just about anywhere in the U.S., even in major cities such as Chicago, Illinois, and New York City. A recent study found that since 1950, the number of coyotes has greatly increased more than any other carnivore (肉食动物) in North America. Researchers expect the animals to make their way to South America soon.
Scientists say the main reason behind the spread of coyotes is the disappearance of their natural enemies, especially wolves. Many years' hunting has wiped_out the wolf population in some areas, allowing coyotes to move in.
At the same time, humans have built cities and towns on what used to be open land. Because they are very good at adapting (适应) to these environments, coyotes have learned to live under houses, on beaches, and in grassy areas such as parks and ball fields.
Coyotes are now so common that experts say we must learn to live safely together with them.
“People are afraid of coyotes,” says DeFouw. “But they are as afraid of us as we are of them.”
Plus, says DeFouw, coyotes serve an important purpose. They help keep pest populations under control by eating rats, mice, and insects.
However, coyotes sometimes hunt pets too. DeFouw advises pet owners to take action by keeping cats indoors and always walking dogs on a lead. People should never feed coyotes or leave food outside. And if you see a coyote, make loud noise to scare (惊吓) it away. If it seems sick or injured, call your local animal welfare officials.

When seven year old Sky Nockels learned that black rhinos (犀牛) were an endangered species, he decided to do something to help them. He raised money to adopt a black rhino named Imara at the Great Plains Zoo in South Dakota. By adopting Imara, Sky helps the zoo take care of the rhino's needs, such as food and a good habitat.
Sky has been a summer camp member at the Great Plains Zoo since he was three. There he and other kids learnt about the animals and do projects for them. “We made juice drinks for the bears,” says Sky. “They enjoyed them.” Another time, he made holes in cardboard tubes and filled them with vegetables for the monkeys. The monkeys had fun plucking (摘) their food from the tubes.
Now that Sky is older, he is playing an even more active role in the care of the animals. Since black rhinos are one of Sky's favorite animals, he decided to adopt Imara first. “I adopted a Grevy's zebra named Deman, too, for my little brother Alexander,” he says.
Sky raised money to help care for the animals he wanted to adopt. He promised to raise$75 for his rhino and $25 for Alexander's zebra. To earn the money, Sky and his grandfather planted a vegetable garden. Sky planted seeds (种子), watered, and weeded (除草). When the time came, he harvested the vegetables and sold them at a stand in front of his parents' store.
When Sky's friends heard about the stand, they brought vegetables from their parents' garden to sell, too. With the help of his friends, he earned enough money to honor his promises.
Sky is one of the youngest people to adopt an animal at the Great Plains Zoo. He cares about the animals and plans to plant and sell vegetables again this summer to help them. “I hope other children do something to help animals, too,” he says.

Scientists in England are using two self directed water vehicles to explore the animal and plant life of the Celtic Sea.
The Celtic Sea is a body of water off the southern coast of Ireland. The area is known for its unusual sea life. Scientists want to know why sea creatures are so attracted to this part of the Atlantic Ocean.
One of the research vehicles is powered by batteries (电池). It collects information for the National Oceanography Center in Southampton, England, and the World Wildlife Fund. The vehicle's low energy requirements permit it to stay floating on water for up to 30 days. Reports of what it finds in the Celtic Sea are sent by satellite.
Stephen Woodward is an engineer who helped design the vehicle. He says the vehicle has equipment that can discover small organisms called zooplankton (浮游动物) and fish. He adds that other sensing equipment measures water currents and other features of sea life. The vehicle also creates a map of the sea.
Another vehicle is powered by the sun and the wind. It can stay floating on water for months. The robotic vehicle sends information about the so called biodiversity hotspots. A biodiversity hotspot is an area of an ocean that has a lot of plant and animal life activity.
Lavinia Suberg is one of the scientists studying the Celtic Sea. She says productive ocean areas, like the Celtic Sea, attract zooplankton. The zooplankton then attracts fish. She adds that areas with a large increase of fish often attract sea mammals and birds.
Using these robotic ocean vehicles greatly reduces the cost of exploring the sea with manned laboratories. Scientists can spend more time analyzing the collected information. They say the research will give them a better understanding of the needs of the Celtic Sea for future management and protection.
