He was controversial (有争议的) through his work as a peace activist, artist and author.
Lennon had two sons: Julian Lennon, with his first wife Cynthia Lennon, and Sean Ono Lennon, with his second wife, avant garde (前卫) artist Yoko Ono. After a retirement from 1976-1980, Lennon reemerged (再度出现) with a comeback album, but was killed one month later in New York City on 8 December 1980. In 2002, respondents to a BBC poll (投票) on the 100 Greatest Britons voted Lennon into the eighth place. In 2004, Rolling Stone magazine ranked Lennon number 38 on its list of “The Immortals (不朽的): The Fifty Greatest Artists of All Time” and ranked The Beatles number one.

One of the most famous buildings in the United States is Carnegie Hall, the home of classical and popular music concerts in New York. Carnegie Hall is known not just for its beauty and history, but also for its amazing sound. Carnegie Hall is named after Andrew Carnegie, who paid for its construction. Construction of Carnegie Hall began in 1890 and the official opening night was on May 5, 1891.
The hall was owned by the Carnegie family until 1924 when it was sold to Robert E. Simon. The building became very old and in 1960, the new owner made plans to destroy it and build an office block. Isaac Stem led a group of people who fought to save Carnegie Hall and finally, the city of New York bought it for $5 million. It was then fixed up between 1983 and 1995.
Advertisements and stories in newspapers abouthow Carnegie Hall needed help to recover its history led people to send in old concert programmes and information from all over the world. Over 12,000 concert programmes were received and with these it was possible to make a proper record of Carnegie Hall's concert history.
Carnegie Hall is actually made up of several different halls, but the Main Hall, now called the Isaac Stem Auditorium, is the most famous. The hall itself can hold an audience of 2,804 in five levels of seating.
Because the best and most famous musicians of all time have played at Carnegie Hall, it is the dream of most musicians who want to be great to play there. This has led to a very old joke which is now part of Carnegie Hall's history. Question: “How do I get to Carnegie Hall?” Answer: “Practise, practise, practise.”

The composing career (作曲生涯) of Albert Roussel got off to a changeable start, and received one of its biggest successes from a lie.
Roussel became an orphan (孤儿) at the age of eight and went to live with his grandfather. He built on the music he had learned from his mother, entertaining himself by reading through the family music collection and playing operatic selections and popular songs on the piano. Three years later Roussel's grandfather died, and his mother's sister took him in. Her husband arranged for young Albert to take piano lessons. Summer vacations at a Belgian seaside added a second love to his life — the sea. He studied to be a soldier in the navy, but still made time to study music.
In the French Navy, he and two friends found time to play the music of Beethoven and other composers. Roussel also began composing. At the Church of the Trinity in Cherbourg on Christmas Day 1892, he had his first public appearance as a composer. That success encouraged Roussel to write a wedding march, and one of his fellow naval officers offered to show it to a famous conductor, Edouard Colonne. When Roussel's friend returned with the manuscript (手稿), he reported that Colonne had advised Roussel to give up his naval career and devote his life to music.
Not long afterward, at the age of 25, Roussel did just that. He applied the qualities that he had developed in the navy to his composing and became a major force in twentieth century French music. As for Edouard Colonne's inspiring advice that Roussel should devote his life to music, Roussel's naval friend later admitted that he had made it up and that he had never even shown Roussel's manuscript to the conductor.

Popular music in America is what every student likes. Students carry small radios with earphones and listen to music before class, after class, and at lunch. Students with cars buy large speakers and play the music loudly as they drive on the street.
Adult drivers listen to music on the car radio as they drive to work. They also listen to the news about sports, the weather, and the life of American people. Most of the radio programmes are music.
Pop or popular music singers make much money. They make a CD or tape which radio stations use in many places. Once the popular singer is heard all over the country, young people buy his or her tape. Some of the money from these tapes goes to the singer. Wherever the singer goes, all the young people want to meet him or her. Now the singer has become a national star.
There are other kinds of music that are important to Americans. One is called folk music. It tells stories about the common life of Americans. Another is called western or country music. Rock and roll music first became popular in the 1950s. There were many popular rock and roll singers during that time, but only a few of those singers are still popular. Most people today are familiar to the singer named Elvis Presley.
Elvis Presley sang different types of music. He sang country music and blues music. He also sang music that you might hear in church, but it was rock and roll music that made Elvis very popular. In fact, the songs of Elvis became so famous that people gave the singer a special name. Everyone started to call him “the King of Rock and Roll”. Today many people still call him “the King” for short.
Other famous singers have also been given special names. Not everyone always agrees with their names, but many newspapers and magazines use the names. For example, in the 1980s pop music became famous, and Michael Jackson was the most popular singer. People thought that the pop music was really just one kind of rock and roll music, so they did not want to call Michael Jackson “King”. Elvis was still the King. As a result, Michael Jackson was given the name “the Prince of Pop”. However, Michael Jackson was not the only famous pop singer in the 1980s. Madonna was also very popular. She was given the name“the Queen of Pop”. More than one woman has been called “the Princess of Pop”. Two of the most famous “Pop Princesses” are Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera.
It is interesting that no woman was ever named “the Queen of Rock and Roll”. There was a Queen of Disco and a Queen of Country Music, but never a Queen of Rock. Maybe in the years to come, a woman who is singing now will get that special name.

Public schools in Washington, D. C. provide students with musical instruments for free. When something goes wrong with an instrument, Charles West and Larry Jernigan do the repairs. Both men approach their work with a passion (激情). For them, it's important that students have a joyful experience with music.
The two have worked together for almost 20 years. This year alone, they've fixed about 450 instruments. Both men are musicians and music lovers, so learning to do repairs came naturally.
“I have been a musician all my life,”says West. “I played in an orchestra here in the city. I majored in music in college. I played in an army band.”
Jernigan's musical interests are varied. “I was formerly trained in the piano and guitar. The alto sax and the flute, I picked up while working here.”
In addition to fixing instruments, the two also go to schools to instruct teachers and students on how to make minor repairs on their own.
West believes if children start early and stay involved with music, it enriches other areas of their lives.“I see that in other kids. I see it in myself. I have seen it hundreds of times and it works,” he says. “They learn teamwork. They learn patience and respect.”
But West has concerns about the future of music in the electronic age.
“This instant age has taken away from the sit down, the patience. And to learn to play an instrument, it takes patience, it takes diligence and it takes time.”
Being able to enjoy music on the job is one of the benefits of the job. Both men agree their best rewards are the students' performances.
