Couldn't she smile If only she were taller. They loved her kicking, but ... Like thousands of other women, Twyla Tharp went to New York with big dreams. The Indiana farm girl entered Barnard College to study art history. But her real interest was dance.
To meet the college's physical education requirements, she studied dance with Martha Graham and Merce Cunningham. Soon she was fitting her schoolwork in between two or three dance classes a day. A dream was born. But dance is not exactly a surefire (必定成功的), lifelong job.
When she graduated in the mid 1960s, she tried out for roles, but she just didn't seem to fit in anywhere. She lacked the technical skills to be a ballerina. “They loved my kicking,” she wrote in her book Push Comes to Shove, “but couldn't I smile?” And she also learned she was too small in every direction to work as a Latin Quarter showgirl, but she still tried. Tharp wondered, “Will I ever be a dancer Do I have any business dancing?” The only way to find out, it seemed, was to form her own group and create her own style of dance.
For five long years, Tharp and her group practiced hard every day in the basement of a Greenwich Village church. Sometimes the cleaners had to “throw them out” on Sunday mornings. They worked for little pay and almost no recognition. Constantly, Tharp asked herself, “Do I want to do this, or don't I?”
Forty years later, after choreographing (编舞) more than 100 dances on Broadway and in movies such as Hair and Ragtime, Tharp still asks herself that question. And the answer is yes.

Michael Saul Dell was born in 1965 in Houston, Texas. While he displayed intelligence and imagination from an early age, he had little interest in school. When he was twelve years old, he operated a mail order trading business for stamps and baseball cards, earning $2,000. At the age of fourteen, Dell got his first computer, an Apple Ⅱ and soon realized that he had a knack for taking computers a part and putting them back together. While in high school, Dell took a job delivering newspapers for the Houston Post. His aggressive selling strategies resulted in earnings of $18,000.
In 1983, when Dell entered his freshman year at the University of Texas at Austin, his parents hoped he would become a doctor, but Dell's skills lay elsewhere. In examining the personal computer, or PC industry, he noticed an opportunity to sell PCs for less, as Dell realized that he could assemble computer parts, skip the step of selling to a dealer, and go directly to the consumer. That way the consumer could buy the product for less, and Dell held on to every penny of the profits. Dell thus combined his knowledge of computers with his well developed business sense and began his own business, assembling upgrade kits for personal computers.
In 1999, Dell recalled operating his new business out of his University of Texas dorm on the twenty seventh floor:“People would ride up to the 27th floor with their computers. I'd put in some memory or a disk drive, they'd pay me, and I'd send them on their way.”His earnings soon reached about $25,000 a month. After one year at the university, Dell had decided to drop out of college. His company began building PCs, starting with parts from such established computer companies as IBM and Compaq and adding elements to make the products unique. Dell continued to sell directly to consumers, a strategy that paid off in vast sums: by the end of 1984, his company had earned $6 million. Dell was off and running, leading his company to big growth year after year.

Today, his paintings command (博得) high prices and hang in museums around the world but when Vincent van Gogh died at age 37 on July 29, 1890, his work was largely unknown.
Vincent van was born in the Netherlands 1853. Although he enjoyed drawing from the time he was a young boy, Vincent had a number of other jobs before he decided to work as a full time. But he failed at most of them. Vincent first started drawing using pencils or charcoal sticks (碳棒). He used some watercolors as well. He liked to draw pictures of poor hardworking people. Eventually he began to paint using oil paints. His most famous early painting was called The Potato Eaters.
Much of what we know about van Gogh comes from letters he wrote to his brother Theo. Theo worked in an art gallery in Paris and supported Vincent's art career. He sent Vincent money and encouraged him. In 1886 Vincent moved Paris to learn from new painters. During this time van Gogh began to use brighter colors.
In 1888 van Gogh moved south to Arles, France to start up an artist's commune (艺术公社). The colors in his paintings became more bright. Vincent painted hundreds of pictures during this time, sometimes painting masterpieces in a single day.
In 1889 van Gogh committed himself to a mental hospital. He could barely take care of himself. He still continued to paint and painted one of his most famous paintings Starry Night.

Before Steve Jobs co founded Apple, there were no iPhones or iPads. Jobs changed the way we think about many things, including telephones, computers, and books. Because of Jobs, says his biographer (传记作者) Walter Isaacson, entire industries like music and publishing have changed completely.
I recently talked with Isaacson in New York City about his new best seller, The Innovators: How a Group of Hackers, Geniuses, and Geeks Created the Digital Revolution, in which he tells hundreds of stories of the people who created the computer and the Internet.
I asked what qualities stood out in the innovators he studied. “They really care about both art and science,” Isaacson said. “They really believe it's important to connect the humanities (人文学科) to technology and engineering.”
For kids who want to become tomorrow's innovators, he said, “If you're a humanities person — very creative and love art — you should not shy away from also learning math and learning coding (编码). If you're an engineer... you should learn to read poetry.”
Every great innovator has passion (激情), determination, and the courage to fail, Isaacson said. Working in teams makes creative people even more effective (有效的), he added. Sometimes, someone else's suggestions can help improve or perfect your design.
When Isaacson was growing up in New Orleans, Louisiana, he decided early on that he wanted to be a writer. After reading a book by a friend's uncle, he realized that writing “is a job you can have, just like being a fisherman or an engineer or a doctor.”
Of all the books Isaacson has written, he said that his favorite was a biography of Ben Franklin. “He did everything,” Isaacson said. “He was friendly and nice and good to people. Reading all of his letters ... I felt I really got to know him and like him.”

A hero is not just a person who saves lives, a hero can also be a person who simply likes to help others and respects them. My hero is Adam Sandler who has saved many people from sadness simply by making them laugh. He does not work for money. He works to make a person smile in the world. Bryan Clay is The World's Greatest Athlete. Really. That's his title. On August 22, 2008, he won the gold medal in the decathlon (十项全能运动) at the Olympics in Beijing, China. It is great success to win this event. In 1912, when American decathlete Jim Thorpe won gold in the decathlon at the Olympics in Sweden, the king of that country told him, “Sir, you are the greatest athlete in the world.” Ever since, the man who wins the decathlon has been known unofficially as “The World's Greatest Athlete”.
The gold medal hasn't changed Clay's life that much. He lives in California, with his wife, Sarah, and their three young children. “I never did this to get rich or famous. I do it because I love the event. I really didn't expect anything more than what I've done. I expected to win the gold medal, and then I expected to come home to live as normal.” His life is normal, but the way he looks at life has changed. The athlete, who grew up poor in Oahu, Hawaii, says, “Now I really do believe that anything is possible.”
Clay wanted to share that belief with as many children as he could, so he started the Bryan Clay Foundation, which provides learning and athletic opportunities to poor kids in Hawaii and California. Clay speaks to kids often and finds that people want to hear what he has to say. “I don't think I'm any different from anybody else who speaks, but because of this gold medal, people actually listen,” he says.
Clay has some advice for kids who want to follow his example. “Find out what you're passionate (热爱的) about and do that. Learn to take every bit of your being and pour it into what you are doing. If you do that, you can be very successful.”
Winning the Olympic decathlon will get you many things. But it won't necessarily make you rich or world famous. Clay's daily training schedule can be difficult and tiring, too. But for Clay, life as a decathlete is worth it because he is doing what he loves.

Katharine loved journalism and got a job after college at The Washington Post, the newspaper her father bought in 1933. At the Post, Katharine met Phil Graham, a lawyer who became her husband. Then, in 1945, Katharine's father chose Phil to take over his paper. Katharine didn't object and stayed at home as a wife and mother.
While Phil succeeded in his career, he also suffered from severe depression. When Phil committed suicide (自杀), the 46 year old Katharine found herself thrown into a new job, that of newspaper publisher. But determined to save the family paper for her children, Katharine met the challenge of running the Post, working endlessly to prove herself to her critics (批评家), and becoming the very famous woman of Washington.
In 1971, Katharine ordered the Post to print a copy of the Pentagon Papers (五角大楼文件), the top secret papers revealing the truth about the Vietnam War. What's more, her brave decision and support for her journalists prepared the Post to break the most important political story in modern history: Watergate (水门事件). Katharine managed to control the most disordered situations when it was reported, all the time insisting the news stories be true and fair. Watergate made The Washington Post an internationally famous paper and Katharine was considered as the most powerful woman in America.
