With her withered (因病萎缩的) legs and a bag of bones, Zhang Junli looks more like a sickly teenager than a 39 year old. She has chronic arthritis (慢性关节炎), an uncommon condition that had paralyzed (使瘫痪) her by the time she was 9.
For the past three decades she has been staying in bed, but despite being just able to lift a paintbrush, she has spent that time perfecting her art. Zhang has created thousands of watercolors, hundreds of oil paintings and has even written two books.
Born in a village in 1978, she first showed symptoms (症状) of the condition at age 6. “One day, when I was 6 years old, I woke up and had great pain in all my joints (关节),” Zhang said. Due to her condition, regular schooling was not possible. So she stayed at home, in bed, and learnt painting by herself. Zhang's love of art was what kept her going and eventually pushed her toward her future career. “I have loved painting since childhood, it makes me calm at heart and my pain even seems reduced while painting,” she said. By watching online videos, reading books and copying the works of Western art, Zhang was able to study on her own how to paint in oils. In 2,000 hours, she has created more than 200 oil paintings.
Her online store “Lily's Easel” opened in February, 2017 on social networking app WeChat and she sold her first painting on the second day, for 360 yuan. In the first two months, she sold dozens of paintings and also started to receive customer orders.
Still, her physical condition worsens day by day and she is mentally prepared for the end. “I hope to have more time every day. I just want to have painted for 10,000 hours. That is my dream,” she said.

He lived his whole life as a poor man. His art and talent were recognized by almost no one.He suffered from a mental illness that led him to cut off part of his left ear in 1888 and to shoot himself two years later. But after his death, he achieved world fame. Today, Dutch artist Van Gogh is recognized as one of the leading artists of all time.
Now, 150 years after his birth on March 30, 1853, Zundert, the town of his birth, has made 2003 “The Van Gogh Year” in his honor. And the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, home to the biggest collection of his masterpieces, is marking the anniversary with exhibitions throughout the year. The museum draws around 1.3 million visitors every year. Some people enjoy the art and then learn about his life. Others are interested in his life, which then helps them understand his art.
Van Gogh was the son of a pastor. He left school when he was just 15.By the age of 27, he had already tried many jobs including an art gallery salesman and a French teacher. Finally in 1880, he decided to begin his studies in art.
Van Gogh is famed for his ability to put his own emotions (情感) into his paintings and show his feelings about a scene. His style is marked by short, broad brush strokes (绘画笔法).“Instead of trying to reproduce exactly what I have before my eyes, I use color more freely, in order to express myself more forcibly,” he wrote in a letter to his brother in 1888.
Van Gogh sold only one painting during his short life. He relied heavily on support from his brother, an art dealer who lived in Paris. But now his works are sold for millions of dollars. His portrait of Dr.Gacher sold for $ 89.5 million in 1990. It is the highest price ever paid for a painting. “I think his paintings are powerful and the brilliant color in them are attractive to people,” said a Van Gogh's fan.

A column of 10 graphic (绘画的) words, uncovered in ruins in Guatemala, is unreadable even by the most expert scholars, but they know what it means — that Maya writing is older than they once thought.
Archaeologists reported last week that the script sample, discovered in northeastern Guatemala, is clear evidence that the Maya were writing more than 2,300 years ago. This is about two centuries earlier than previous well dated Maya writing.
Scholars of Maya culture said the discovery changed the time of literacy's origins in the Americas. But they were not sure when, where and how early American cultures first put words into graphic form.
Some of the confusion is caused by different definitions (定义) of writing, whether fuller texts are required. But it is generally agreed that the oldest writing in Mesoamerica (including Maya writing) was one of the four scripts — Sumerian, Egyptian and Chinese are the others — to be invented independent of outside influences.
What may be the earliest Maya words turned up in the same ruins where a mural (壁画) was found The mural is one of the earliest examples of Maya art, dated about 100 BC.
The style of the painting was different from later Maya art, and the graphic words were more abstract than later Maya writing. This has been frustrating (令人沮丧的) for David Stuart, a professor of the discovery team. He said the graphic words had special Maya characteristics and were “the earliest firmly dated Maya writing”. But he and others were able to understand just one symbol, the one meaning “ruler” or “lord” or possibly anyone of noble status. “The exact meaning of the other 9 graphic words will probably remain unclear,” he said, “until additional and longer texts are found from the same time in Maya history.”
语篇解读:10个绘画文字的发现让人们意识到玛雅文字书写的历史比以前想象的要早。
1.From the discovery in Guatemala, we can learn that ________.
A.the meaning of the 10 graphic words will be clear soon
B.the 10 graphic words have the same meaning as those found before
C.Maya writing has a longer history than people thought
D.the 10 graphic words can't prove the time when the Maya were writing
解析:选C 细节理解题。根据前两段可知,在Guatemala 发现的10个绘画文字意味着玛雅文字书写的历史比人们曾经认为的要早,因此C项正确。
2.It can be inferred from the passage that ________.
A.people once thought Maya writing was the oldest
B.scholars were sure when the Maya first put words into graphic form
C.people once thought the Maya were writing 2,500 years ago
D.Maya writing didn't borrow anything from other outside cultures
解析:选D 推理判断题。根据第四段可推知,玛雅文字的发明未受其他外部文化的影响,故D项正确。
3.According to David Stuart, what can help to understand the exact meaning of the 10 graphic words
A.The exact definition of Maya writing.
B.The cooperation of the most expert scholars.
C.Some other detailed studies on the other three scripts.
D.Some longer texts found from the same time in Maya history.

4.The passage mainly tells us the graphic words ________.
A.push Maya writing back by years
B.will be understood by experts
C.were discovered in Guatemala
D.were more abstract than the mural

A small group of people around the world have started implanting (移植) microchips to link the body and the computer.
Mr. Donelson and three friends, who had driven 100 miles from their homes in Loockport, New York, to have the implants put in by Dr. Jesse Villemaire, whom they had persuaded to do the work, are part of a small group, about 30 people around the world, who have independently put in microchips into their bodies, according to Web based reports.
At a shop William Donelson was having a four millimeter wide needle put into his left hand. “I'm set,” he said with a deep breath. He watched as the needle pierced (刺穿) the fleshy webbing between his thumb and a microchip was set under his skin. At last he would be able to do what he had long imagined: strengthen his body's powers through technology.
By putting the chip inside — a radio frequency identification device (RFID) — Mr. Donelson would have at his fingertips the same magic that makes safety gates open with a knock of a card, and bridge and tunnel traffic flow smoothly with an E Zpass. With a wave of his hand he plans to connect with his computer, open doors and unlock his car.
Implanting the chip was a relatively simple task but very meaningful to Mr. Doneselson, a 21 year old computer networking student so interested in the link between technology and the body that he has data input jacks (数据输入插孔) inside his body. They might lead to an imagined future when people can be connected directly into computers. His new chip is enclosed in a glass container no bigger than a piece of rice and has a small memory where he has stored the words “Technology”.
Some doctors have done the piercing in people's homes, and others have implanted chips in their offices after patients signed forms showing the fact that long term studies have not been done on their safety. Piercers treat the implants much like any other medical operation steps, instructing people to keep the site dry, and advising them that swelling and redness should last a week.

Local officials in Beijing promised to further protect the city's cultural heritage (遗产), in particular the narrow streets known as Hutong.
Hutongs are commonly found in the cities of North China, but they are at risk. Beijing is currently believed to have fewer than 1,000 Hutongs, most of which are near the Forbidden City. Only 60 years ago, the number was 3,250. In the old districts of Dongcheng and Xicheng, some people will be asked to move from Hutong houses to avoid further damage to the ancient architecture.
“On average more than 100,000 people visit the Forbidden City during the National Day holidays. The visits put pressure on the protection of cultural relics,” said the director of the Beijing Municipal Commission of Urban Planning, adding that Hutongs should be protected from human damage.
The government focused on how the protection plans were carried out and how the management of cultural heritage worked. The head of the Xicheng district government, said the area has 182 cultural relics, many of which were built as far back as the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368). “The most efficient way is to decrease the local population to reduce the possibility of causing harm to the heritage.”
“Each community has been required to report the status of its cultural heritage, especially Hutongs, and any actions to damage the heritage will be punished.”
No one knows for sure how many Hutongs will be left in the coming 100 years.

There are many people you are well advised to treat kindly: your child's teacher, your husband or wife, your boss and so on.
Until now, that best behaviour required list has not included your Uber driver, or for that matter, taxi drivers. Old thinking: Hey, they're here to serve me. I don't have to make a special effort to be nice to them.
Dangerously wrong.
A recent story in The New York Times told the instructive tale of a Uber passenger, Hussein Kanji, who says he's really not sure how he made his driver angry. All he knows is that his driver generated rating went way down and the wait for a Uber car became hours instead of minutes.
Beware, Uberians: If you're feeling angry when you slide into the back seat and you give your driver the silent treatment, your reputation may get damaged in the drivergenerated ratings. If you're among the people one Uber driver described as “generally negative”, watch out.
Uber isn't the only front on this battlefield. The ability to rate someone's service is one of the successes of the Internet. It helps everyone weed out people with bad attitudes and worse habits.
These ratings should cut both ways. A while back, the auction site eBay made many of its sellers angry when it started preventing them from giving negative ratings to buyers. Until then, sellers and buyers had threatened each other with negative reviews. Too many negative reviews could get you thrown off.
Then eBay shifted the balance of power to buyers. Sellers can still write a bad comment, but the overall rating cannot be anything but positive. Thus eBay has become a place where all is for the best. Think positive!
We know that being nice to people all day can be exhausting. We've also seen people who shout at those who don't measure up to their expectations for service.
Uber is reportedly about to spread worldwide. It is a welcome competitor because it fits the needs of customers in a new way. We know Uber is a two way street. But drivers who get too picky may end up with no passengers.
Everyone, behave!
