Animals may sense chemical changes in groundwater that occur when an earthquake is about to strike.
This could be the cause of bizarre animal behavior. Researchers began to investigate these chemical effects after seeing a colony of toads (蟾蜍) abandon its pond in L'Aquila, Italy, in 2009 — days before a quake.
The L'Aquila toads are not the first example of strange animal behavior before a major earthquake. There have been reports throughout history of animals and fish behaving in unusual ways just before an earthquake struck. In 1975, in Haicheng, China, for example, many people spotted snakes emerging from their holes a month before the city was hit by a big earthquake. This was particularly strange, because it occurred in January, when snakes were in the middle of their annual hibernation. With temperatures well below freezing, venturing outside was suicide for the cold blooded animals.
Ms Grant, a biologist from the Open University, was monitoring the toad colony as part of her PhD project. “It went from 96 toads to almost zero over three days,” she recalled.
Scientists had been studying the chemical changes that occur when rocks are under extreme stress. They wondered if these changes were linked to the mass departure of the toads. Their tests have now revealed, not only that these changes could be connected, but that the Earth's crust (地壳) could directly affect the chemistry of the pond that the toads were living in at the time. Animals that live in or near groundwater are highly sensitive to any changes in its chemistry, so they might sense this days before the rocks finally “slip” and cause a quake.

Studying abroad is tough. Thankfully, there are several apps that make it easier to travel and communicate with family and friends across the ocean, which are helpful in relieving some of that study abroad anxiety.
Triposo:The App Store has over 142 separate Triposo apps, each one full of information about one trip destination. Each destination's front page shows the local time, up to date currency exchange rate and the top seven things to do. The “Practicalities” tab shows addresses of local public transportation stops, grocery stores and currency exchange locations. The “Travelpedia” tab gives you a quick history lesson on the city, including a list of annual festivals and suggestions of local food you have to try before you leave. And each Triposo app is available offline, so you don't need Wi Fi to plan your trip throughout the day!
Evernote:Thanks, Evernote, for being the greatest app ever. Use it to record lectures and take notes in class, make grocery lists and create to do lists for your travel destination. Save your travel routes, hotel information and address of the closest coffee shop right to your phone for easy access when you're on the go.
Viber: While WhatsApp is the more popular app for overseas communication, Viber takes it a step further in terms of functionality. This app uses Wi Fi, so you can text and even make calls while you're away. The sound quality is different from a regular phone call, but it is very clear.
Foodspotting: Hungry in a new city Check your Foodspotting app — it scans your location for photos and reviews of good food in your area. Foodspotting offers recommendations based on your location, so you can choose between lots of delicious options nearby.
Google Translate: If I had superpower, I would speak every language. But until that day comes, Google Translate is the way to go. Don't be dumb when you're in a new country. Know what you want to say when you get to the coffee shop. Don't just point and say it sheepishly in English — zero people will like you. Get out that Google Translate on your way there, figure out what you want to say, practice your pronunciation, and walk in confidently.

How Northern Europeans Beat the Winter Blues
Ask a child from Northern Europe to draw two pictures — one on a rainy day and a second in the sunshine — and this is what you will get: __1__ When a yellow sun sends out some light from the corner, the man is smiling.
__2__ They think this is true because they are so aware of how their environment affects them. Yet that link has no scientific basis. In October 2008, a group of researchers examined the influence of different daily weather factors, including temperature, wind and sunlight, on 1,200 participants. The conclusion was that good or bad weather had little effect on people's feelings. __3__ A person who is upset on dark or cold days suffers from a negative mood, and he will be likely to experience a sad winter. This is an illness called Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). __4__
Ani Kalayjian, professor of psychology at Fordham University, advises that we should take steps to strengthen the brain's system against weather driven mood changes. Research on SAD has been focused on the brain's response to darkness and light. When our eyes detect darkness, the brain gives off melatonin (褪黑激素), which starts sleep cycles.__5__ It takes over to help us wake up and feel better when we detect light.“We can encourage people to take charge of their feelings,” says Kalayjian. “We tell them to leave the computers and the indoor games and sun themselves. That's when people can recharge their serotonin (血清素) and get a better mood.”
A.Northern Europeans associate rain with sadness and sunshine with happiness.
B.It is seriously doubted among the people who suffer from SAD.
C.It affects about 10% of the population of Northern Europe each year.
D.Another chemical called serotonin, however, can make people happy.
E.In the first, as raindrops fall from the top of the page, the man behind the window has an unhappy expression.
F.Most studies prove that a negative feeling is associated with bad weather.
G.They determined that people actually differ in their sensitivity to weather changes.

2.选A 设空处为本段的主题句。根据空后的“They think this is true because they are so aware of how their environment affects them.”及“that link”可知,本段主要讲北欧人把心情与天气联系在一起。故选A项。

Let me ask you a question: What is the tallest mountain on Earth? Most school children will say the answer is Mount Everest near the border between Nepal and Tibet.
There is something that is 304 meters taller than Mount Everest. However, it is mainly underwater. It begins at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean, and rises more than 17 kilometers from the ocean floor.
Its name is Mauna Loa. In the Hawaiian language,Mauna Loa means“Long Mountain”. Mauna Loa is more than half of the island of Hawaii, the largest of the Hawaiian Islands.
It is also the largest and most active volcano on Earth. It has produced liquid rock called lava more than thirty times since records were first kept in 1843. Today, Mauna Loa is quiet. It is not producing lava. However, volcano experts say it is only a matter of time before this happens once again.
SARAH LONG: Mauna Loa is not the only volcano on the island of Hawaii. There are four others. Three of them are no longer active. One of them still is active. It is named Kilauea.
It has produced lava more than fifty times in the last one hundred years. At this moment, red hot lava is pouring out of Kilauea. It has been doing this since 1983.
Sometimes the lava moves slowly. At other times, it pours out very fast as huge amounts of pressure force it from the volcano. During these times, it moves almost as quickly as water moving down the side of a mountain. Sometimes Kilauea produces large amounts of lava that seem like rivers of fire.
Experts say the volcanoes of the island of Hawaii are proof that the changing environment of Earth is, and will always remain, beyond human control.

Giant kites could supply green energy without the need for taxpayer funded subsidies (津贴) within years. Kite Power Solutions expects to open the U.K.'s first kite power plant in March 2017 in Scotland. It hopes to roll out the technology onshore and at sea, building systems with the capacity to produce “hundreds of megawatts” of power within the decade. The company believes the technology could reduce the cost of wind energy. And it predicted that kite power would cost so little that developing countries would be more likely to use it to free themselves off polluting carbon heavy energy sources.
A spokesman Ainsworth for Kite Power Solutions said the technology could decrease the cost of offshore wind energy, meeting the need for governments' efforts to reduce carbon emissions. He said the technology was easy to fix and maintain, meaning it could be used in deep water, on floating structures far from shore. “If we do that, it opens up a global deep water offshore wind market,” he said.
The technology could control rising CO2 emissions in the developing world, where the need to save money forces people to resort to polluting technologies such as diesel. The company has tested the technology on a small scale in Essex and will move its headquarters to Glasgow to prepare for next year's launch. It has won planning permission for a 500 KW demonstration system.
The U.K.'s green energy trade body, RenewableU.K. welcomed the technology but warned it was not a_silver_bullet. The deputy chief executive Maf Smith said,“This is an ambitious project to develop wind power at extraordinary heights and it shows the level of new ideas within the renewable industry. Kite power is at an early stage of development and it will take time to see how the technology progresses. Anyway, we will need a wide range of energy sources in the future to meet our needs in an environmentally friendly way.”

Treasure hunting is something that usually only appears in pirate tales; however, a complex pit (坑) on Oak Island, on the south shore of Nova Scotia, Canada, sparked a more than 200 years real life treasure hunt. Sixteen year old Daniel McGinnis took a simple fishing trip on the island in 1795. Upon exploring a wooded part of the island, he came across a tree with markings which led to him finding a thirteen feet wide depression (下陷) in the ground. Thoughts of buried pirate treasure inspired him to dig and see what was causing this. After gathering his friends John Smith and Anthony Vaughan, they dug only two feet into the ground before reaching flagstones (石板). Once these stones were removed, the boys continued to dig only to find logs at the ten and twenty five feet level. At this point they knew they could not dig any farther without more help.
Years passed as the boys likely searched for some financial assistance and digging help. In 1803, with the backing of Simeon Lynds, another excavation was attempted. This time there were various oak platforms, putty, coconut fiber mats, stones and charcoal they kept encountering every ten feet and eventually they reached a flat stone that was inscribed with strange letters and markings. This stone later was translated to read “Forty Feet Below Two Million Pounds Are Buried”, but at the time was just quickly removed only to find more wood below. After this discovery two days passed and upon returning to the pit they found it had flooded with seawater. All attempts to remove the water failed.
Many theories still exist on who created the pit and what may be at the bottom. Some say it may have been built by pirates, but to create a dry dock and not hide treasure. Many would like to claim aliens landed and created this pit for something from their world. One last theory is that it is simply a natural sinkhole and that through years of various objects sinking it could appear that there were “platforms” of trees and such.

Currently, more than 4,000 of them are still in the dark. Crews have worked 16 hour shifts (更换) to restore power to residents.
Most of Houston seems to be returning to normal. Schools, restaurants, retail (零售) stores and gas stations are open. Smiles are back. But harder hit places, including Galveston, will take much longer to recover. Hundreds of people are still missing, and coastal towns are a mess. Some ruins from storm have drifted south to other beaches in Texas. Several public schools in Galveston are closed due to water damage. Parents are registering kids in other area schools which are scheduled to begin class on November 13. Many school supplies were destroyed.
Clara Barton Village is an emergency shelter located at Alamo Elementary School in Galveston, Texas. This is where Paula Reed and her family are staying. Believe it or not, Paula Reed and her family consider this hurricane a blessing. When Paula was a girl, she was an orphan, but was taken in by her stepmum, Antonia Flores. Reed lost contact with Flores and had been trying desperately to locate her for the past few years. Before the hurricane, Reed and her family moved away from Galveston to a San Antonio shelter. Stephen Hawking Warns Humans
Must Leave Earth Soon
Professor Stephen Hawking recently came out with a serious warning for people. While at the Starmus Festival, a festival in Trondheim, Norway, celebrating science and the arts, Hawking warned people that the human race is in serious danger.
Hawking criticized President Donald Trump for denying climate change. Then the physicist warned the audience, “I am not denying the importance of fighting climate change and global warming, unlike Donald Trump, who may just have taken the most serious and wrong decision on climate change this world has seen.”
Hawking proposed that the leading countries should send astronauts to the Moon before 2020 to restart a movement of more exploration in space. The BBC reported that Hawking suggested that we “build a lunar base in 30 years' time and send people to Mars by 2025”.
According to the BBC, Professor Hawking said, “Spreading out into space will completely change the future of humanity.” He continued, “I hope it would unite competitive nations in a single goal to face the common challenge for us all.” The physicist shared more ideas to motivate the younger generation to continue exploring space. Hawking stated, “A new and ambitious space program would excite (young people), and stimulate interest in other areas, such as astrophysics (天体物理学) and cosmology (宇宙学).”
Hawking also revealed his vision of other forms of energy that could move us to a new planet. He warned the audience, “The Earth is under threat from so many areas that it is difficult for me to be positive.” He continued, “Our natural resources are being drained at an alarming rate. We have given our planet the disastrous gifts of climate change, rising temperatures, reduction of the polar ice caps, deforestation (滥伐森林), and decimation (大批杀死) of animal species. We can be an ignorant and unthinking (考虑不周的) lot.”
The professor warned the audience that doing nothing would lead nowhere. He said, “If we succeed we will send a probe (航天探测器) to Alpha Centauri within the lifetime of some of you alive today. It is clear that we are entering a new space age. We are standing at the threshold (开端) of a new era. Human colonization and moving to other planets is no longer science fiction, and it can be science fact.” Hawking advised the audience to move to other worlds because we are running out of space.
