Aerial (空中的) performer Jennifer Bricker was born without legs, but she never let it stop her.
Wrapped in a loop (圈) of red silk hung from the ceiling Jennifer Bricker climbs and twists to the music. Her head hangs down and her strong arms let go as she balances on her back, high above the ground a move that's all the more daring because she has no legs.
Jennifer was a few months old when she was adopted by Sharon and Gerald Bricker. She had big brown eyes, a bright smile, and huge amounts of energy. When a doctor advised her adoptive parents to carry her around in a kind of bucket (桶), they refused.
Jennifer soon learned to walk — and run — on her hands and bottom, and grew up fearlessly climbing trees and bouncing on the trampoline (蹦床) with her three older brothers. “My parents didn't treat me differently so I didn't grasp the concept that I was different. I knew I didn't have legs but that wasn't stopping me from doing the things I wanted to do.”
At the age of three she was fitted with artificial legs, but she never really took to them — she moved more freely without.
In 1996 the Olympic Games took place in Atlanta. Jennifer loved to watch the women's gymnastics team, and especially adored the 14 year old Dominique Moceanu who competed for the US. When Moceanu and the women's team won gold, Jennifer decided she was going to be a gymnast, too. She took up power tumbling, which involves performing floor exercises down a runway. But Jennifer did not want any allowances to be made for her disability.
At the age of 10 she took part in the Junior Olympics and by age 11 she was tumbling champion for the state of Illinois.
Jennifer now travels the world as an inspirational speaker and acts as an aerial performer.

If your parents were to surprise you with a present on your birthday, which one would you prefer, a trip to the amusement park or a new pair of shoes
According to Science Daily, about one third of the people are likely to prefer shoes to a fun trip. These people are called “materialists”, namely, those who value material goods more than experiences. But which of the two choices makes people happier
Back in 2009, Ryan Howell, a professor at San Francisco State University, found that in the long run, experiences make people happier than possessions. This is because the joy of receiving a new object fades over time as you get used to seeing it every day. Experiences, on the other hand, can continue to bring you joy in the future through happy memories.
But materialists should at least be happy when they first buy something, shouldn't they
To figure it out, Howell did another study. He classified a group of adults according to their personality types, ranging from less materialistic to more materialistic. Each person was asked different questions to see how they felt about spending money on material goods versus spending money on experiences.
As expected, the more materialistic participants got less happiness from purchases than the less materialistic, because such purchases didn't fit with their personalities and values. But to Howell's surprise, he found that materialists weren't any happier even if they spent money on material items.
This is because materialists worry that others may criticize or look down on their choices. “There are certain value systems that are rejected by society,” said Howell. “When we find out someone is materialistic, we think less of them, and that drives their happiness down.”
Another reason is that materialistic people always focus on what they don't have instead of what they have now. This makes them feel less satisfied and grateful.
If you happen to be a materialistic person, there's something you can try. “If materialists make more accurate purchases, rather than trying to impress others, they will be happier,” Howell said.
You should also remember what an ancient Greek philosopher once said, “Do not spoil what you have by desiring what you have not; remember what you now have was once among the things you only hoped for.”
语篇解读:本文是一篇议论文,作者通过引用Ryan Howell的研究结果证实经历比有形物质更能给人带来快乐。
5.What did Ryan Howell find in his studies

B.About one third of the people prefer material goods to experiences.
C.Materialists have more fun spending money on goods than on experiences.
D.Receiving a new object brings lasting joy while the joy of an experience fades soon.
解析:选A 细节理解题。根据第三段中的“... found that in the long run, experiences make people happier than possessions”可知,经历比物品更能使人感到高兴。根据第六段中的“the more materialistic participants got less happiness from purchases than the less materialistic”可知,比较倾向物质主义的参与者比不太倾向物质主义的参与者从购物中得到的快乐更少。由此可见,Ryan Howell在他的研究中发现:有形物质比经历给人带来的快乐更少。因此,该题选A。

A.How to judge whether a person is a materialist.
B.Why materialists are not happy with their purchases.
C.How materialists feel when they spend money on goods.

解析:选D 细节理解题。根据第四段“But materialists should at least be happy when they first buy something, shouldn't they?”及第五段第一句“To figure it out, Howell did another study”可知该题选D。
7.Why does the author use the ancient Greek philosopher's words in the last paragraph
A.To advise materialistic people not to try to impress others.
B.To persuade people to be satisfied with what they have.
C.To prove it's unwise to be materialistic and desire too much.
D.To tell readers what they desire now might one day become theirs.
8.What can be the best title for the passage
A.Are You a Materialist
B.How to Acquire Happiness
C.The Best Present for the Birthday

On the first day of school our professor introduced himself and challenged us to get to know someone we didn't know. I looked round when a gentle hand touched my shoulder. I turned around to find a wrinkled, little old lady with a smile. She said, “Hi, handsome. My name is Rose. I'm eighty seven years old. Can I give you a hug?” I laughed and enthusiastically responded, “Of course you may!” She gave me a giant squeeze. “Why_are_you_in_college_at_such_a_young,_innocent_age?” I asked. “I always dreamed of having a college education and now I'm getting one!” she told me. After class we walked to the Student Union building and shared a chocolate milkshake. We became instant friends.
Every day of the next three months we would leave class together and talk nonstop. I was always listening to this “time machine” as she shared her wisdom and experience with me. Over the course of the year, Rose became a campus icon (偶像) and she easily made friends wherever she went. At the end of the semester we invited Rose to speak at our football dinner. I'll never forget what she taught us. “We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing. There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up. Anybody can grow older. That doesn't take any talent or ability. The idea is to grow up by always finding opportunities in change. Have no regrets. The elderly usually don't have regrets for what we did, but rather for things we did not do. The only people who fear death are those with regrets.” She concluded her speech by courageously singing The Rose. She challenged each of us to study the lyrics (歌词) and live them out in our daily life. At the year's end she finished the college degree she had begun all those years. One week after graduation Rose died peacefully in her sleep.

More than 2 million US teenagers have suffered a serious bout (发作) of depression in the past year, according to a federal government survey released on Tuesday.
On average, 8.5 percent of adolescents aged 12 to 17 described having had a major depressive episode in the previous year, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration reported.
But there were “striking differences” by sex, with 12.7 percent of girls and 4.6 percent of boys affected.
Depression is the leading cause of suicide, which in turn is the third leading cause of death for 15 to 24 year olds in the United States.
“The data showed that rates of past year major depressive experience among youths aged 12 to 17 generally increased with increasing age,” the researchers wrote.
Researchers at SAMHSA and RTI International in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, prepared the report using data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health.
More than 67,700 youths aged 12 to 17 answered questions about mood and depression. They were also asked to rate how depression affected them using the Sheehan Disability Scale (残疾量表), which measures impact on family, friends, chores at home, work and school.
Researchers defined a major depressive episode as two weeks or longer of depressed mood or loss of interest or pleasure, and at least four other symptoms such as problems with sleep, energy, concentration or self image.
Nearly half of the teenagers who had major depression said it severely damaged their ability to function in at least one of the areas on the disability scale.
“Fortunately, depression responds very well to early intervention and treatment,” SAMHSA Administrator Terry Cline said in a statement.

“This isn't Disneyland, I'm not a novelty (新奇), this is as real as it gets.” sing The Sisters of Invention.
The young women — Annika, Michelle, Jackie, Aimee and Caroline — are a pop group with a difference. All have learning difficulties and some have extra disabilities.
The five are based in Adelaide, Australia, and met in 2010 when they sang together in a choir (合唱队) run by Tutti, an organization which supports disabled artists. Tutti saw they had talent and invited them to form a group. Now they perform together two or three times per month, and this is how they make a living.
Michelle is 25 and has cerebral palsy (脑瘫) and a mild learning disability. She says, “We choose the name The Sisters of Invention because we are like sisters and we support each other on and off stage. For the invention part, we are trying to change people's view of people with disabilities. We are reinventing the rules.”
All their songs are based on the members' own experiences and were written as a group in their twice weekly meetings at Tutti. “We would arrive in the morning and I'd say, ‘What do you want to talk about today?’” says their manager and producer Michael Ross. He then noted down everything they said until lyrics took shape. Ross says that putting “their truth” out there is important. He says, “What I'm interested in is that we get to see the world in a way that people in pop culture almost never get to see. It is creative gold.”
When they perform their songs, the physical side of their disabilities is more obvious, but Ross says, “They're not up there to show their barriers or difficulties. They're up there to show their strengths.”

Each year on Halloween, children look forward to trick or treating (不请客就捣乱) for candies. But for some kids, eating Halloween candies can be dangerous.
That's because 1 out of every 13 kids in the US have a food allergy. They are allergic to ingredients in many Halloween candies, such as peanuts, tree nuts, milk, eggs, and beans. If they eat these foods, they will get sick or even die.
“I had to throw away all my candies with tears,” eight year old Conlen said. Conlen is allergic to peanuts, tree nuts, and dairy. Twelve year old Kylie is allergic to peanuts and tree nuts. She has been trick or treating only twice. “I brought my candies home and gave them to the neighbors,” Kylie said. “It felt terrible.”
But this year, Conlen, Kylie and other kids with food allergies will have a chance for a happy Halloween. That's because nearly 100,000 households across the US have promised to take part in the Teal (蓝绿色) Pumpkin Project (TPP), which was started last year by Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE).FARE is an organization that works to improve the lives of people with food allergies. Through the project, the households agree to have nonfood items for trick or treaters, including trinkets (小饰品) and toys.
To take part in the project, people buy a teal pumpkin or paint a pumpkin teal and place it in front of their house. The painted pumpkins let trick or treaters know that nonfood items are available there. The households also add their home addresses to an online map, making it easier for trick or treaters to find them.
Kylie loves the idea. “The TPP makes Halloween fun and safe,” she said. “It makes me feel like a normal kid, and it makes everyone feel included.”

Darek Fidyka, a 38 year old Bulgarian, had been paralysed (瘫痪的) from the chest down for four years after a knife attack. Scientists from Britain and Poland took cells from his nose, transplanted (移植) them into his back and re grew his spinal cord (脊髓). Now he can walk and even drive a car. The doctors were delighted but said it was the first step in a long journey.
The breakthrough came after 40 years of research by Professor Geoff Raisman, who found that cells had the possibility to repair damage to nasal (鼻腔的) nerves, the only part of the nervous system that constantly re grows. “The idea was to take something from an area where the nervous system can repair itself, and does so throughout life, and put it into an area that doesn't repair itself,” Professor Raisman said.
Polish doctors injected the nasal cells into Mr Fidyka's spinal cord above and below the injury and used some nerves from his ankle to form a bridge across the damaged tissue. The nasal cells appear to have caused the spinal nerves to repair themselves.
Professor Raisman achieved this with rats in the late 1990s, but this is his greatest success. “I think the moment of discovery for me was Christmas in 1997 when I first saw a rat that couldn't control its hand put its hand out to me. That was an exciting moment, because I realised then that my belief that the nervous system could be repaired was true.”
Doctors chose the easiest case for their first attempt — it might not work for others. But there is a real sense of hope that an idea once thought impossible has been realised.
David Nicholls, who helped provide money for the breakthrough, said information about the breakthrough would be made available to researchers across the globe.
“What you've got to understand is that for three million paralysed people in the world today, the world looks a totally brighter place than it did yesterday,” he said.
