Ⅰ.阅读理解(共10小题;每小题2.5分,满分25分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A
Thirteen can be a challenging age. Not only did I have to adapt to my changing body, but I also had to deal with my parents' bitter divorce, a new family and the upsetting move from my country home to a crowded town.
When we moved, my beloved companion, a small brown pony had to be sold. I was heartbroken and terribly lonely. I couldn't eat or sleep and cried all the time. Finally, realizing how much I missed my pony, my father bought me another horse, Cowboy.
Cowboy was without doubt the ugliest horse in the world. But I didn't care. I loved him beyond all reason.
I joined a riding club. When Cowboy and I entered the events where the horse was judged by appearance, we were quickly “shown the gate”. I knew nothing could turn Cowboy into a beauty. My only chance to compete would be in the timed speed events. I chose the jumping race.
For the whole next month we practiced running and jumping for hours in the hot sun and then I would walk Cowboy home, totally exhausted.
All of our hard work didn't make me feel confident by the time the show came. One girl named Becky rode a big brown horse in the race events. She always won the blue ribbons. I sat at the gate and sweated all out while I watched Becky and her horse charge through the court and finish in first place.
My turn finally came. At the signal, we dashed toward the first fence, jumped over it without trouble and raced on to the next one. Cowboy then flew over the second, third and fourth fences like a bird and I turned him toward the finish line.
No cheers filled the air. The end of our run was met with surprising silence. Cowboy and I had beaten Becky and her fancy horse by two seconds.
I gained much more than a blue ribbon that day. At thirteen, I realized that no matter what the odds are, I'd always come out a winner if I wanted something badly enough to work for it. I can be the owner of my fate.
1.Why did the author like Cowboy so much in spite of its ugliness
A.Because she loved horses more than anything else.
B.Because Cowboy was a strong and smart young horse.
C.Because Cowboy had a lot in common with her pony.
D.Because she was sad and lonely and needed a companion.
2.The audience fell into silence at the end of the run probably because ________.
A.they didn't expect Cowboy would win the event
B.they were unhappy that Becky was beaten in the event
C.they didn't like Cowboy, for it was too ugly
D.they never saw a horse running as fast as Cowboy
3.After the competition, the author came to realize that ________.
A.she ought to gather the courage to solve all the problems
B.it was time to forget her pony and treat Cowboy better
C.she needed to work harder to win more blue ribbons
D.she could be the god of her own fate if she tried hard enough
B
So much of body language is influenced by our culture. Whether we meet each other with a handshake, a kiss on the cheek, or a forehead touch, each greeting is completely dependent on culture.
These cultural expressions are dictated by what are called “display rules”, the specific expectations every group has about body language behavior. For example, you only have to stand on line for a bus in San Francisco to see an interesting difference in cultural display rules about personal space. If you queue (排队) up for a bus on Market Street in the business district at rush hour, you'll stand in a very orderly line, with a three foot bubble of personal space, your fellow passengers busily tapping their BlackBerries without so much as a glance at you. But if you board the bus in Chinatown, you might find yourself a part of a group of people, stomachs pressed against backs, each person vying for a seat at the same time on that same bus.
Cultural display rules differ from country to country, state to state, even city to city. For example, in the United States as well as in most other countries, nodding your head up and down is a signal explained as “yes”. We use it to emphasize (强调) a point when we say yes, or we simply use it nonverbally to show agreement. In Bulgaria, however, shaking your head from side to side means “yes” and nodding your head up and down means “no”. That would be an important difference to be aware of if you were stuck at a Bulgarian train station in the middle of the night.
As we become a global society, different cultural norms inch closer and closer to each other with each generation. The more exposure kids have to people of different cultures, the more likely they are to recognize a variety of people as “like me” as well. And we can show a great deal of respect by learning those different display rules before we do business with people in other cultures. Knowing each others' display rules, and respecting them, is a huge step toward bridging cultural gaps with body language.
4.The underlined word “vying” in Paragraph 2 means “________”.
A.competing B.looking
C.asking D.failing
5.What's the main idea of Paragraph 3
A.Nodding head has several meanings.
B.People use kinds of ways to show agreement.
C.Cultural display rules are the same in Europe.
D.Cultural display rules are different in different places.
6.What's the author's opinion on learning different display rules
A.It helps hand down cultures.
B.It's the requirement of global economy.
C.It outweighs learning foreign languages.
D.It's important for communication across cultures.
C
Wearable sensors (传感器) could one day interpret the gestures in sign language and translate them into English, providing a high tech solution to communication problems between deaf people and those who don't understand sign language.
Engineers at Texas A&M University are developing a wearable device that can sense movement and muscle activity in a person's arms. The device works by figuring out the gestures a person is making by using two sets of sensors: one that responds to the motion of the wrist and the other to the muscular movements in the arm. A program then wirelessly receives this information and changes the data into the English translation. “Most of the technology was based on vision or camera based solutions,” said study lead researcher Roozbeh Jafari, an associate professor of biomedical engineering at Texas A&M University.
These existing designs, Jafari said, are not enough, because often when someone is talking with sign language, he or she is using hand gestures combined with specific finger movements. “I thought maybe we should look into combining motion sensors and muscle activation,” Jafari told Live Science. “And the idea here was to build a wearable device.”
The researchers built a system that can recognize words that people use most commonly in their daily conversations. Jafari said that once the team starts expanding the program, the engineers will include more words that are less frequently used, in order to build up a more substantial vocabulary.
One drawback of it is that the system has to be “trained” to respond to each individual that wears the device, Jafari said. This training process involves asking the user to repeat or do each hand gesture a couple of times, which can take up to 30 minutes to complete.
7.How does the new device work
A.By figuring out gestures from fingers.
B.By connecting the wrist and the fingers.
C.By linking the arm and the fingers.
D.By collecting information from the wrist and the arm.
8.The researchers eventually decided on a wearable device to________.
A.make it easier to monitor the gestures when people are talking
B.make the translation process faster
C.compete with existing designs
D.make it user friendly
9.We can replace the underlined word in Paragraph 4 by “________”.
A.necessary B.influential
C.extensive D.essential
10.What can we infer from the text
A.The device has greatly increased in sales.
B.The device still requires much improvement.
C.We should work out of 30 minutes.
D.We should be trained to respond quickly.

Stop Eating Yourself Stupid
We all know that poor nutrition can lead to bad health and even weight gain. Now add “lack of intelligence” to the growing list. A recent study has found that what you eat could very likely play a role in how smart you are.
According to the study, rats fed with a high fat diet for 10 days showed signs of weakness and even had trouble finding food that was waiting for them. __11__ Actually a high fat diet could weaken our intelligence — but so can a low calorie diet. The trick appears to lie in finding a nice balance.
Here are ways to achieve that happy balance and make you smarter through diet, exercise and improving your brain power.
Figure out how many calories you need to maintain your weight. __12__ If you need to drop a few pounds, take away the number you get by 400, and consume that number of calories each day until you drop the weight.
__13__ Aim for healthy foods that include good amounts of protein, fiber, fruits and vegetables, healthy whole grains, healthy fats and plenty of water. Well! Don't forget to exercise your mind while doing so. Read a book. Try a new recipe. Do some puzzles. __14__
Exercise regularly with a positive attitude. Aim for at least three 30 minute training sessions a week (but more is better). I like simple exercise such as walking, but anything that raises the heart rate is good. __15__ Combine them! Some people like to listen to classical music such as Bach or Mozart, but rock music lovers will be happy to learn that this kind of music can help make them smarter as well.
A.You may be fond of music, too.
B.Your health depends on your exercise plan.
C.Aim to get this amount of calories each day.
D.Don't forget to exercise your mind while playing.
E.You may be wondering what this has to do with us.
F.These are all good ways to help increase your intelligence.
G.Eat the right foods in addition to getting the right amount of calories.

Ⅵ.概要写作(满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。
According to a study at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, researchers found that people who had a good sense of humor and laughed a lot, not only at home but also at work, had fewer heart problems than people who laughed less, and people who laughed a lot tended to live a longer life than the ones who did not.
After reading plenty of information about the benefits of laughing and a careful study of previous papers in this area, a doctor in India started a Laughter Club. Dr. Mandan Kataria's Laughter Club quickly grew into 1,800 groups throughout India and over 6,000 around the world. The Laughter Club had even inspired World Laughter Day, which people celebrate on the first Sunday of May every year. Instructors at the clubs get people laughing not only through jokes but through simple laughing exercises. For example, instructors and participants repeat the chant “ho?ho?ho” and “ha?ha?ha” together. What's more, participants also do the “Lion Laughter” by sticking out their tongues and waving their hands around their ears. Other exercises focus on breathing and simple yoga exercises. In a word, all the activities that can cause laugh are included in the clubs.
These Laughter Clubs are very popular in hospitals and nursing homes nowadays in India, where participants can forget about their aches and pains while laughing. It seems that laughing may be just as important as eating right and exercising.
Not everyone can join a Laughter Club, but we all can take part in the same practice. According to the doctor, besides taking part in the clubs, everyone can do something to make themselves laugh. How can you make laughing a part of your daily routine If you feel funny about joining a Laughter Club, you can rent a funny movie, remember a funny experience, do some sports, go to the zoo, watch the monkeys or even just make yourself laugh. You will not be able to keep a straight face all the time.
So, don't worry; be happy. Laugh a little and live longer.
