Local officials in Beijing promised to further protect the city's cultural heritage (遗产), in particular the narrow streets known as Hutong.
Hutongs are commonly found in the cities of North China, but they are at risk.Beijing is currently believed to have fewer than 1,000 Hutongs, most of which are near the Forbidden City. Only 60 years ago, the number was 3,250.In the old districts of Dongcheng and Xicheng, some people will be asked to move from Hutong houses to avoid further damage to the ancient architecture.
“On average more than 100,000 people visit the Forbidden City during the National Day holidays. The visits put pressure on the protection of cultural relics,” said the director of the Beijing Municipal Commission of Urban Planning, adding that Hutongs should be protected from human damage.
The government focused on how the protection plans were carried out and how the management of cultural heritage worked. The head of the Xicheng district government, said the area has 182 cultural relics, many of which were built as far back as the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368). “The most efficient way is to decrease the local population to reduce the possibility of causing harm to the heritage.”
“Each community has been required to report the status of its cultural heritage, especially Hutongs, and any actions to damage the heritage will be punished.”
No one knows for sure how many Hutongs will be left in the coming 100 years.

World hunger. These two little words contain one huge problem: people do not have enough to eat. According to the World Food Programme, hunger kills more people than any disease. World hunger is a widely recognized problem and many intelligent and generous people are working toward a solution.
Logically, it would seem that the best, fastest and easiest solution would be to give food to people who do not have it. While providing hungry people with food is great, unfortunately it is only a temporary fix to the global problem.
But maybe there is another answer. Statistics gathered within the past decade show that countries in which citizens spend a higher percentage of their yearly income on food tend to also have higher rates of malnutrition (营养不良). For example, people in Pakistan spend nearly half of their annual income on food, yet over 40 percent of their children under the age of 5 are malnourished. In contrast, Americans spend around 7 percent on food and only 5 percent of children are malnourished.
Perhaps to create a self supporting system, the focus and resources should shift from giving food to giving something that lasts a little longer. Maybe the answer is in commerce (商业), not just charity. Heifer International is one example of a nonprofit organization that has shifted its focus from food. This organization gives poor families and communities breeding animals and teaches them to farm animals.
Heifer International teaches people valuable marketing skills and provides the resources to start small businesses. The families who are initially helped can then assist other families in their communities by sharing their resources and knowledge. These people earn better incomes and have more money to have the freedom to buy more food.
A common saying goes,“Give a person a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a person to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” Maybe if we turn our focus from giving fish to teaching fishing, we can get a little closer to solving world hunger. Not only does this help the individual, but it can help families, communities and generations.

An Italian company has created the world's first underwater farm. The station named Nemo's Garden consists of five biospheres (生物圈) fixed to the bottom of the sea off the coast of Savona, Italy. They're being used to grow strawberries, beans, garlic, and lettuce.
“The main target of this project is to create other sources of plant production in areas where environmental conditions make it difficult to grow crops through traditional farming, including lack of fresh water, fertile soil, and extreme temperature changes,” said project spokesperson Luca Gamberini.
The five biospheres, currently floating between depths of 18 and 36 feet, are constantly watched by Ocean Reef Group — a diving equipment company — from a control center on dry land. According to various news reports, the plants are watered by drips (水滴) of water on the inner walls of the biospheres. With a constant temperature of 79 degrees day and night, and humidity at around 83 percent, the conditions are ideal for plants to grow well. The high amount of carbon dioxide also encourages growth.
Ocean Reef president Sergio Gamberini said he came up with the idea of growing plants underwater during a summer vacation in Italy. In his own words, he wanted to do something that's different and to show the beauty of the ocean. After two years of failed attempts, they finally were able to get these five biospheres working. Their success may lay the foundation for a new form of crop production that can be done without harming the environment.
In fact, the biosphere seems to be attracting wildlife. Octopuses and endangered seahorses are taking shelter under the structures, while crabs are climbing up the anchors (锚) and into the greenhouses. None of the creatures have damaged the plants so far.“It's so kind of science fiction to see these two different forms of life interact,” Gamberini said.

Back in freshman year, I found myself wondering whether it should really be called “volunteering” if students only do it because they have to.
I ended up volunteering at Weyrich Health Center, helping elderly patients with daily tasks. The more I did these tasks, the more disconnected I felt from the seniors. Though I felt bad for them, I did not want to interact with them.
Then one rainy day, I met Colonel Hemsworth. He invited me to his table and asked for some company. I regarded this as another boring task. However, when I listened to his stories, I learned that he was a brilliant war veteran (老兵), and I found his tales interesting.
After my brief talk with the Colonel, I realized that I shared common characters with all the seniors. I_felt_like_an_oxygen_molecule_(分子)_—_ready_to_bond_—_rather_than_an_isolated_noble_gas.
I met with many learned senior citizens who shared their experiences and wisdom. All of the seniors provided insight and a new perspective on life. No longer did I walk aimlessly down the hallways. I found myself enjoying talking with these people as I learned their histories. Why hadn't I realized sooner that volunteer work could enlighten me
Some people argue that volunteering and working for change does not help. However, they fail to realize that the world is constantly changing and humans must adapt. My experience at Weyrich Health Center has taught me that refusing to change one's views and accept new perspectives leads to short term goals that eventually munication with others is a vital part of life. Volunteering is not only a requirement or a way to beef up your résumé, but it is a time for service and personal growth.
Now I enjoy volunteering my time surrounded by seniors who bring history alive for me. By communicating with them, I have developed into a more dynamic person.

The first ever human head transplant (移植) is now possible. Dr. Sergio Canavero believes that the technology now allows doctors to carry out the Frankenstein style procedure, which has been tested out on animals since 1970. Up until now there has been no way to successfully reconnect the spinal cord (脊髓), leaving the subjects paralyzed from the point where the transplant was connected.
Recent advances have meant that reconnecting the spinal cord is now possible, and it is believed that the breakthrough means that previously deadly diseases could be cured. However, other experts cannot accept the idea. Professor Anthony Warrens, from the British Transplantation Society, said, “Connecting a head to a body is impossible for human beings today. The whole idea is bizarre.”
In 1970 Robert White successfully transplanted the head of a rhesus monkey (恒河猴) onto the body of a second rhesus, and Dr. Sergio Canavero, a member of the Turin Advanced Neuromodulation Group, has suggested a similar method.“The greatest technical difficulty in such an attempt is of course the reconnection of spinal cords between two creatures. It is my opinion that the technology only now exists for such linkage,” he said.“It is argued that several up to now hopeless medical conditions might benefit from such procedure.”
He believes that a team of 100 could perform the operation in 36 hours — at a cost of £8.5 million. Both heads would have to be removed at the same time, and reconnected within an hour.“This is no longer science fiction. It could be done today — now. If the operation is done it will provide a few people with a great amount of extra life,” he said.“The only reason I have not gone further is lack of a huge amount of money for the operation.”However, Dr. Calum Mackellar, from the Scottish Council on Human Bioethics, added,“This sounds like something from a scary movie.”
