In 2007, Barrington Irving became the youngest person to fly alone around the world. He was just 23 years old—and he built the plane himself. How did he achieve this
Irving’s interest in flying started when he was 15. He was working in his parents’ bookstore in Miami, Florida. One of the customers was a pilot, Gary Robinson. One day, Robinson asked Irving if he was interested in flying. Irving didn’t think he was smart enough. But the next day, Robinson took Irving to an airport. He showed Irving inside the cockpit (驾驶舱) of a Boeing 777. That experience changed Irving’s life.
Irving really wanted to fly, but the flight school was expensive. To achieve his dream, he had different jobs. He washed airplanes and cleaned swimming pools. At home he practised flying on a video game. In the end, he got enough money for a flight school.
At the flight school, Irving achieved his dream of learning how to fly. Then he planned to build his own plane and fly alone around the world.
Building the plane was difficult. Irving asked more than 50 companies for airplane parts. Most said no, but he persisted (顽强地坚持) in asking. Three years later, he had parts worth $ 300,000, Columbia, an airplane company, agreed to build a plane using the parts. Soon, his airplane was ready to fly.
On March 23, 2007, Irving began his round-the-world trip. After 97 days, he landed back in Miami. A cheering crowd of people was there to welcome him.
Irving saw many young people in the crowd, and this had a powerful effect (影响) on him. He wanted to use his experience to help other young people achieve their own dreams.
“Everyone told me what I couldn’t do,” says Irving. “They said I was too young, and that I didn’t have enough money. But even if no one believes in your dream,” he says, “you have to pursue (追求) it.”

Every day there is less and less space on the Earth for rubbish. Yet every day we make more and more rubbish. What can we do We can recycle some of our rubbish. Recycling means that the rubbish will be made into something that can be used again.
Recycling helps the Earth. And it saves space in rubbish dumps. Half of things that we put into landfills could be recycled instead. In fact, most things made of paper, metal, glass and plastic can be recycled.
Paper can be broken into small pieces and made into new paper. Steel and aluminum cans can be melted down (熔化) and made into new cans. The same is true of glass bottles. This can be done over and over again. Recycling doesn’t take as much energy as making these things for the first time. So we can useless of the Earth’s fuel resources.
Plastic can be melted down too. Then it can be formed into park benches, playgrounds and so on. Some people call plastic the “wood” of the future. Things made of plastic will last about 400 years. No wood can do that!

Think of somebody you really admire. You will probably find that their success didn’t come easily. As “Father of Hybrid Rice”, Yuan Longping got over great difficulties and spent his whole life working to reduce world hunger and helping to feed the country with the largest population.
Wu Mengchao, the “Father of Chinese Hepatobiliary Surgery (肝胆外科)”, focused on saving people’s lives for nearly eighty years. He performed more than 16,000 operations during his life. Holding the surgeon’s knife for such a long time deformed his fingers. Wu once said, “It would be my greatest happiness if I could work at the operating table until my dying day.”
In 1969, in order to solve the problem of treating malaria (疟疾), Tu Youyou, a pharmacologist (药学家), took on the job as head of a research team. She and her teammates performed different kinds of experiments. However, the results were disappointing. Instead of giving up, they kept trying. Finally, in1972, they made it! In 2015, at the age of 85, she received a Nobel Prize.
Thomas Edison, the inventor of the light bulb, believed that every failure was a step towards success. He once said, “If I find 10,000 ways something won’t work, I haven’t failed. I am not discouraged, because every wrong try is another step forward.”
Sometimes, their success was a surprise, even to themselves. The famous scientist Alexander Fleming said, “When I woke up one morning in September, 1928, I certainly didn’t plan to revolutionize (变革) all medicine by discovering the world’s first antibiotic (抗生素). But I guess that was exactly what I did.”
Some people only became successful after their deaths. Not like Pablo Picasso who became famous and very rich during his lifetime, the artist Vincent van Gogh only sold one painting all through his life and that was to a friend. But he kept painting and he painted more than 2,000 artworks in the following ten years. Now his paintings are very popular and they sell for millions of pounds.
One thing all these people have in common is sticking to their goals no matter what happens.
