Lesson 3 Period 1

Warm up
Take turns to ask and answer questions.
1 How do you travel to school every day?
2 How much time do you spend travelling to school
every day?
3 How do you feel when you get stuck in traffic jams?
4 Why have your parents decided to rent an
apartment near our school?
Warm up
Report your partner’s answers to the class.
My partner is driven to school by her Dad every day. They spend about 30 minutes traveling to school. Sometimes she gets up late and there are traffic jams and it takes them longer time. She feels stressed out and sometimes she feels annoyed because she doesn’t want to be late. After school, she has to take the bus home, which is quite crowded. When getting home, she feels exhausted and doesn’t want to do her homework.

Discuss
In groups, discuss these questions.
1 What is the writer’s attitude towards cars? Find some evidence from the passage.
2 How do you understand the title “The Road to Destruction”?
The writer knows that cars have negative effects and she wants to help the environment (“We know that cars are bad for us”, all quite simple, isn’t it? Five easy ways to improve our environment”) but she thinks it will be difficult for her to give up her car (“I’ve got to pick up my daughter from school … The traffic is going to be horrible, but what can I do?”).
The road to destruction refers to the fact that the cars on the road will
eventually lead to the destruction of our planet.
Discuss
3 Are the traffic problems in your city better, worse or the same as those in Britain?
4 What has the government done or what should it do to help with traffic problems?
