Step 1 Lead-in
1. T arouses Ss’ interest by asking questions.
Do you exercise regularly What exercise do you usually do
How do you make exercise a regular part of your life
T: Hello, everyone. As we know, exercise can bring us many physical and mental benefits. Do you exercise regularly What exercise do you usually do How do you make exercise a regular part of your life
S1: I do exercise every day. To be more specific, I do small amounts of exercise whenever I can. When I study for a long time, I get out of my chair and stretch my arms or legs. I run in the school playground for a while during class breaks. I believe one can fit exercise into their daily schedule as long as they are determined enough.
S2: I work out five times a week. I play basketball with my friends on Monday and Wednesday. I do workout routines with my friends in the school playground such as squats, push-ups and burpees by following an app called “Keep” on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Workout can cost you nothing and also strengthen your bonds with your friends if you choose the right one.
2. T summarizes Ss’ ways of making exercise a regular part of their life.
T: As you have said, there are many ways you can make exercise a regular part of your life. First, you can try to do small amounts of exercise whenever possible. Second, you can always find a way of exercise that can be done outside the gym if money is a problem. Last but not least, you can invite your friends or family to work out with you.
【设计意图:通过设问,激发学生思维,引入主题。】
Step 2 Revision
1. T asks Ss to recall the reasons why Leo is unwilling to take up exercise.
T: We know that Leo is unwilling to take up exercise. Do you still remember why he is unwilling to exercise
S: Leo is unwilling to take up exercise for three main reasons. First of all, he thinks he has no time to exercise. Besides, he can’t afford to work out in the gym, even though he is interested in the swimming classes. Also, he complains that there is no one to talk to while exercising.
2. T asks Ss to discuss their suggestions for Leo’s problems.
T: Now suppose you’re Leo’s friend, how would you advise Leo to solve his problems You can discuss his problems mainly from three perspectives. Exercise can be fitted into your schedule. Exercise does not necessarily require money. And exercise can be done with your family or friends.
【设计意图:回归课本,复习Leo的问题,并针对Leo的问题讨论解决方法,为下面对话活动的顺利开展做准备。】
Step 3 Talking in pairs
1. T asks Ss to role-play a conversation between Rachel and Leo about ways Leo can make exercise a regular part of his life.
T: Suppose you’re Rachel and your partner is Leo. Your friend Leo is unwilling to take up exercise. And you’re here to encourage him to work out regularly. You’ll discuss his problems together and try to find out solutions.
【设计意图:通过对话,让学生进一步熟悉如何鼓励朋友去经常锻炼,巩固所学知识。另外,鼓励学生大胆对话,提高口语交际能力。】
2. T asks Ss to present their conversation.
T: All of you have finished your role-play. Now it’s time to share your ideas with us.
3. T offers Ss a sample for their reference.
【设计意图:鼓励学生展示自我,培养学生自信心。】
Step 4 Writing a reply to encourage Leo to work out regularly
1. T introduces Ss the task of writing.
T: From your presentation, I find most of you have known how to encourage a friend to work out regularly. Next we’ll help Rachel write a reply to Leo to encourage him to work out regularly.
2. T shows Ss the steps of writing.
T: Writing is a process that involves at least four steps: prewriting, drafting, revising, editing and publishing. Next we’ll go through these steps one by one and write out the reply.
3. Prewriting
(1) T shows Ss what they are supposed to do during the prewriting step.
T: First, you need to gather information by interviewing people, researching in the library or on the Internet etc. Don’t forget to assess the data you have gathered to decide if they are reliable or not. Second, brainstorm and talk with others to get as many ideas as possible. Third, outline the relevant ideas with a list, a mind map or a flow chart.
(2) T asks Ss to get the ideas.
T: You can combine your ideas from part C with the information in parts A and B. You also need brainstorm and come up with more ideas.
(3) T introduces the structure that Ss should follow to write an email of encouragement.
T: Do you know what kind of structure you should follow to write an email of encouragement
T: You should start by showing your understanding of the situation. Then, you should give suggestions with reasons in the body part. Last, you’re supposed to end the email by offering encouragement.
(4) T explains the techniques of writing an email of encouragement.
T: While following the above structure, you should also pay attention to some techniques of writing an email of encouragement as well. To fully understand the topic and brainstorm ideas, you should read the instructions carefully. You can use diagrams, such as a mind map or a flow chart to organize your ideas. You can also make a list of the points you want to cover.
(5) T leads Ss to pay attention to the language features of writing an email of encouragement: informal and proper.
T: You need to consider the purpose of your writing and your reader, which determine your language style. An email to encourage a friend is usually informal. Besides, you can show your understanding properly with expressions such as “I’m sorry to hear that ...” and end your email with “I hope you’ll find these suggestions helpful and I’m sure you’ll ...”.
4. Drafting
T: In this step, you are supposed to put the ideas on paper according to the outline you have drawn.
5. Revising
T: In the revising process, you are supposed to make your writing more concise, organized and persuasive. Here are four aspects you need to pay attention to when revising. First, add words and sentences so that your writing can capture all ideas. Second, remove words and sentences to make your writing concise and clear. Third, move words and sentences to improve sentence fluency and discourse organization. Fourth, substitute words and sentences in terms of word choice and voice. Pay attention to the initials of the four aspects. The revision stage can be summarized as “ARMS” to help you remember more easily.
T: To improve your writing, you need to review the writing first by yourself and then by your partner. These questions may help you.
Self-review:
Are the reasons you give convincing Do you use proper language to express understanding and encouragement
How can you improve your writing
Peer review
What does your partner think of the suggestions and reasons you give
How can you improve your writing
6. Editing
T: When editing, you need to pay attention to the capitalization, the usage and grammar, the punctuation and the spelling. The four aspects can be summarized as “CUPS” according to the initials.
7. Publishing
T asks Ss to share their writing with the rest of the class.
【设计意图:通过一系列活动,给学生提出具体写作建议,引导学生抓住写作要点,最终提升写作能力。】
V. Homework
