Step 1 Lead-in
1. A quote
T: Hello, boys and girls, since we have been talking about doing sports in this unit, what’s your attitude towards sports and health
T: Cai Yuanpei has said, “People’s well-being not only depends on food, but also relies on motion.” We can see that doing sports is very important for our health.
2. A survey
T asks Ss to finish a survey to let them get involved in the topic.
T: Now can you finish this survey to let me know more about your opinion on exercise and health
T: Do you know what to do when you have some problems with health What will you do when your friend has some problems with health Will you encourage him or her to work out regularly Today, we will first watch a short video about Leo’s problems and then we will read Leo’s email to his friend Rachel.

Step 2 Watching the conversation between Leo and Dr Chen
1. Pre-watching
(1) T shows some new expressions about health problems.
T: Now, let’s go over some expressions which might help you understand the conversation.
overweight 肥胖
a runny nose 流鼻涕
concentrate on 集中注意力
stay indoors 宅在家里
immune system 免疫系统
fight off illness 抵御疾病
(2) T shows Ss some expressions for making suggestions.
T: In this conversation, the doctor will give some suggestions to Leo to help him solve his problems. Please pay attention to the following expressions for making suggestions.

(3) T asks Ss to go through A1 in the textbook.
T: Now, our friend Leo is talking to Dr Chen about some problems with his health. Please go through the steps of part A1 and understand all the problems.

2. While-watching
(1) T asks Ss to watch the video for the first time and finish the exercise of A1.
T: Now, please watch the video and tick the problems Leo mentions in the boxes.
(2) T asks Ss to watch the video again and finish the exercise of A2.
T: Since we have ticked out Leo’s problem, now please go through the table in A2. Then watch the video again and try to find out Dr Chen’s suggestions and their benefits.
【设计意图:看完第一遍,让学生找出Leo的健康问题,理解重点在对话的前部分。看完第二遍,让学生完成细节信息的填空,找出医生的建议及其好处。】
3. Post-watching
(1) T asks Ss to do a role-play.
T: You did a great job! Now, please try to role-play the conversation. Don’t forget to use the expressions for making suggestions.
【设计意图:以A1和A2部分为基础,重新演绎Leo与Dr Chen之间的对话,注意使用关于建议的表达,以巩固学生所学知识。】
(2) T asks Ss to infer Leo’s attitude towards Dr Chen’s suggestions.
T: How does Leo respond to Dr Chen’s advice
T asks Ss to pay attention to the following sentences of Leo and his tones:
OK.
Actually, I don’t like sport. I’d rather stay indoors reading than play sport.
That sounds good.
OK, I understand.
T: We can see that he understands the benefits of exercise but it seems, for some reason, he is unenthusiastic and reluctant to start working out.
Step 3 Reading Leo’s email
1. Before reading
T asks Ss to predict why Leo is unwilling to start working out.
T: Thank you for your excellent performance! From the video, we can see that Leo doesn’t want to do sports. Then why do you think Leo is reluctant to start working out
T: Actually, after seeing the doctor, Leo wrote an email to his friend Rachel. Please read the email and try to find out the reason why Leo is unwilling to begin working out regularly.
【设计意图:在学生进行角色表演后,由学生总结出Leo对于定期锻炼的态度,导出B部分Leo写邮件的情节。在阅读前给学生做阅读任务,使阅读更高效。】
2. While-reading
(1) T asks Ss to find the three reasons why Leo doesn’t want to exercise.
T: Now, please turn to page 23, and here is the email. Read it carefully and finish the exercises after the email.
T: As we can see, there are 3 reasons why Leo is unwilling to take up exercise:
He doesn’t have much time for exercise.
He doesn’t think that he has the money to work out in the gym.
He thinks it’s hard to stick with an exercise routine.
(2) T asks Ss to find the supporting information for the three reasons.
Reason 1: He doesn’t have much time for exercise.
He has so much schoolwork.
He takes part in a lot of after-school activities.
During the weekend, he often hangs out with his friends.
Reason 2: He doesn’t think that he has the money to work out in the gym.
He just can’t afford to sign up for classes in the nearby gym.
He does want to try swimming but the swimming classes are so expensive.
Reason 3: He thinks it’s hard to stick with an exercise.
He thinks it very boring to exercise alone.
He doesn’t like jogging along the same path every morning, repeating the same movement day after day and having no one to talk to.
3. Post-reading
T organizes Ss to have a group discussion.
T: Thanks for your hard work and we almost finish our task today. Now please think about the following questions and have a brief discussion.
Do you think working out regularly is important for our health Why
What kind of suggestions will you make if you have a friend like Leo
