I. Learning objectives
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
1. gain some basic knowledge about literature, including characteristics, representative writers and classics of each type;
2. analyse the popularity of different types of literature and explore the reasons;
3. distinguish different types of literature with ease and appreciate the features of each type.

IV. Teaching procedures
Step 1 Lead-in
T introduces what he/she is reading recently and asks Ss some questions about their reading habits.
T: Recently, I am reading a fantastic novel Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone written by J. K. Rowling. It tells an incredible adventure of Harry Potter. Do you guys like reading too What books are you reading recently or do you enjoy reading Can you classify them into different types and share with your partners
【设计意图:让学生从熟悉的话题入手,激发学生用英语表达的主动性,带领学生迅速进入主题文学体裁的探讨,让学生主动参与教学活动,从而对后面的教学起到较好的铺垫作用。】
Step 2 Understanding different types of literature
T leads Ss to learn the features of different types of literature in detail.
T: I’m very glad to hear that you guys have enjoyed reading very much and have already known some basic knowledge about literature! In today’s class, we will study further about different types of literature systematically. Now, let’s investigate them one by one.
Novel
T: Have you read Romance of the Three Kingdoms or Robinson Crusoe Do you know what type of literature do they belong to
(Answer: Novel)
T: Can you list some other novels you know and their writers
(Possible answers: Great Expectations, Oliver Twist, A Tale of Two Cities—Charles Dickens)
T: What features do novels have in common Can you try to summarize
(Possible answer: Novels are long, detailed stories with many characters and are usually divided into several chapters.)
Short story
T: Are you familiar with O. Henry Have you read his works
(Possible answers: The Cop and the Anthem, The Gift of the Magi, The Last Leaf ...)
T: What type of literature do they belong to
(Answer: Short story)
T: Do you know more representative writers of short stories
(Possible answers: Maupassant, Anton Chekhov ...)
T: What are the features of short stories Please have a discussion in groups and share your ideas with the class.
(Possible answer: A short story is a short piece of writing with a few characters.)
Poetry
T: “If Winter comes, can Spring be far behind ” Have you ever heard about this famous line Do you know which work it comes from and who the writer is
(Possible answer: “Ode to the West Wind” by Percy Bysshe Shelley)
T: What type of literature does it belong to
(Answer: Poetry)
T: Can you list some other famous poets and their masterpieces
(Possible answers: “Don Juan” by George Gordon Byron, “When you are old” by William Butler Yeats)
T: What are the features of poetry Please have a discussion in groups and share your ideas with the class.
(Possible answer: Poetry often uses beautiful, artistic language to express feelings or describe situations and is written in separate lines.)
Play
T: Have you read Laoshe’s Teahouse What type of literature does it belong to
(Answer: Play)
T: Can you list some other plays and their writers
(Possible answers: Hamlet, The Merchant of Venice, King Lear—William Shakespeare, Thunder, Sunrise—Cao Yu)
T: What are the features of plays do you think
(Possible answer: A play is a story written for performance on the stage, usually made up of dialogues between characters and stage directions.)
Autobiography & Biography
T: Are you familiar with Benjamin Franklin What are his major achievements
T: Before Franklin’s invention, lightning destroyed or damaged many buildings. Franklin’s understanding of electricity allowed him to design the lightning rod, which was a metal rod attached to the high point of a building. He made many achievements in different fields. If you want to know more about him, you can read The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin. This book is written by Franklin himself—we call this type of literature “autobiography”.
T: Then what is biography Biography is also about the story of a person’s life, but it is written by someone else. Can you list some other biographies
(Possible answers: Steve Jobs: A Biography—Walter Isaacson, Marie Curie: A Life—Susan Quinn)
T: So far, can you distinguish the main difference between autobiography and biography
(Possible answer: Autobiography is the story of the writer’s own life, while biography is the story of a person’s life written by someone else.)

Step 3 Watching the video
Pre-watching
Before watching the video, T leads Ss to have a guess about the popularity of different types of literature among students.
2. While-watching
(1) T asks Ss to watch the video and complete the chart in part B1 on page 51.
(2) T asks Ss to watch the video again and complete the notes in part B2 on page 51.
3. Post-watching
T asks Ss to work in groups and discuss why some types of literature are less popular and some are more popular.
T: From your point of view, why novels and short story collections are very popular among students And why autobiographies, biographies as well as poetry collections are the least popular types of literature Can you share your ideas and insights with other classmates based on your personal experience
(Possible answer: Because novels especially fantasy novels and short stories usually have interesting plots and are more effective than other types to get students immersed in reading. )

Step 4 Assessment
T shows Ss some other famous works and asks them to identify what types of literature they belong to.
(Answer: “The Road Not Taken”: Poetry; Pride and Prejudice: Novel; The Biography of Su Dongpo: Biography; La Parure: Short story; Romeo and Juliet: Play; My Autobiography: Autobiography)

V. Homework
1. Review the content on page 50, and preview the content on page 52.
2. Make a table to list the books that you have read or like reading in terms of types of literature.
