Step 3 Writing

T: A diary entry is a record of a person’s experience, thoughts, feelings or plans. As a personal form of writing, a diary entry is generally not meant to be read by anyone else.
(2) Learning about the format
T: When you write a diary entry, you should write the date in the top left-hand corner of the page and begin with “Dear Diary”.
(3) Learning about the structure
T: You can brainstorm ideas first and then organize your ideas with a mind map. I have come up with three qualities of friends and plan to say something about my best friend as examples. Then I organize my idea with a mind map like this.
【设计意图:让学生熟悉日记写作的格式和篇章结构。】
(4) Learning about the language
T: Try to use informal English, as if you were talking to a close friend. That is to say, informal writing is similar to conversational English.
T: Why we should try to use informal English instead of formal English in a diary entry Informal writing has a more personal tone and therefore is suitable for this text type.
T: Here are some features of informal English.
Personal: A diary entry uses the first person “I”.
Emotional: A diary entry allows for the display of true emotions. The key thing about a diary entry is that it is always kept truthful, natural and free-flowing. You should be honest about your feelings.
Using contractions and abbreviations: We usually use “I’ll” instead of “I will”, “esp.” instead of “especially”.
Simple: A diary entry uses shorter or even incomplete sentences.
Colloquial: A diary entry uses informal words and slang. For example, we usually use “take away” instead of “withdraw” and “supply” instead of “furnish”.

There are many things that you can put into your diary. It may be about what happened that day, about something that you want to do in the future, or maybe to just mark an event that led a strong emotion in you like happiness, anger, excitement, etc. So please make keeping diary a habit, and after some time it will become a friend that you reach out to automatically.
