In the book The Best Little Girl in the World, written by Steven Levenkron, Kessa has a serious
eating disorder called anorexia nervosa. Many people have this eating disorder, and this book
shows its harmful effects.
Kessa is a normal 15-year-old girl. She has many talents, especially for dancing. She has
danced for many years and loves it. One day her dance teacher tells her to eat right. Once Kessa
hears this, she takes things too far. Instead of cutting down on snacks and junk food, she decides
not to eat at all. She does not eat breakfast, lunch, or dinner. One after another, she loses the
pounds, and her body becomes thinner and thinner. She loses weight to a point where she is
unhealthy.
As her poor eating habits continue, her parents start interfering ( 干涉 ). They are puzzled by
their daughter’s strict diet. Her parents try everything, but Kessa’s dieting continues. She makes up
her mind to have no fat on her body.
Kessa’s doctor and parents finally decide to take her to the hospital. She is now so skinny that
she can hardly walk. There, she goes through a nightmare ( 噩梦 ). Though she has been taken
good care of, all Kessa can think about is how much weight she might gain. Throughout the rest of
the book, Kessa goes through many troubles in order to cure her eating disorder.
This book, I think, can help to prevent people from doing this to themselves. It shows the
trouble that people go through just to be slimmer, and all the scary things they must experience to
be cured. This is a moving and encouraging story of a determined girl and her fight to survive, and
I think every teenager should read it.
( ) 21. Anorexia nervosa must be ________.
A. a kind of food B. an important person in the book
C. another name of Kessa’s D. a kind of illness
( ) 22. Knowing Kessa’s poor eating habits, her parents must be ________.
A. worried B. happy C. angry D. proud
( ) 23. According to this passage, teenagers are supposed ________.
A. not to take anything B. to drink only water
C. to eat properly D. to have junk food

Topping the class academically was certainly an advantage. Studying was a breeze for Nigel.
The reward was certainly incomparable to the little effort that he had put into. It began when he
was selected to help the teachers in the computer laboratories.
The peak of his school career came not when he topped the school but when he was selected
for the nationwide competition. Unlike everyone else, Nigel wanted to join the contest because
he liked playing with the Lego sets and making something out of them. Nigel spent the next two
months rebuilding the robot. It was during the time that Nigel found out about the prizes for the
competition as well as another competitor, Alicia, from a neighbouring school. His early intentions

were forgotten. Getting the thousand-dollar prize was more important than anything else. Nigel
decided to befriend Alicia. Unaware of his intentions, Alicia told him all about the robot that she
had been building for the competition. He even helped her to put the finishing touches to her robot.
He was glad with the way things had progressed. His robot looked even better than Alicia’s and it
was able to bounce a ball with its arm—something Alicia had failed to do.
On the day of the competition, he saw Alicia. Everything dawned on her the minute she saw
him among the competitors. She stared at him, puzzled at first, then angry and finally a look of
helplessness came over her.
The flashbulbs of the camera exploded in Nigel’s face. The robot had performed actions so
unique and different that the specialists’ judgements were the same. Nigel was so pleased with
himself that he did not even notice the girl standing a few feet away from him. Without her, he
would never have won the competition.
( ) 24. What reward did Nigel receive for doing well in his school work
A. He was offered a part-time job.
B. He helped in the computer laboratories.
C. He helped his teachers construct a robot.
D. He was honoured with a scholarship.
( ) 25. Nigel’s original intention of joining the contest was to ________.
A. construct a robot with the Lego sets B. be a great honour to his school
C. be the top student of the school D. win the thousand-dollar prize
( ) 26. What is the author’s attitude towards Nigel’s behavour
A. Critical. B. Indifferent. C. Favourable. C. Uncertain.

We have a strange interest in the concept of perfection. “If I have the perfect parents and
perfect grades, then I would be happy.” Under cultural influence, we seek what we can’t have
without remembering that we don’t actually need to be perfect. Imperfection allows us to be
human.
Parents, teachers and other high-achieving peers will have us believe that we must be perfect if
we wish to remain competitive. However, what job or school requires you to have a 2400 SAT, 4.0
GPA and develop a cure for some form of cancer by the age of 18 Although these would be great
achievements, are they worth the cost of sleep We feel like we need the perfect grades to get into
the perfect college that will provide us with the perfect education necessary to get the perfect job.
With this misconception ( 误解 ), when writing our resumes ( 简历 ), we then seek out experiences
that we think may help build a good name for ourselves. Feeding on our thirst for perfection, some
college and career industries have been set up claiming to help us reach our goals.
The truth is that you only need to be good enough. You won’t become an expert at anything if
you spend your time trying to succeed in everything you do. You only become an expert when you
devote your time to the one or two projects that truly bring you joy.
As members of this society, we have a responsibility to be “excellent” in what we do, not
“perfect”. Although perfection can be a goal, it should not be the only goal. We only have 24 hours
in a day. Thus, we need to prioritize ( 优先选择 ) what we want to do and cut out the activities we
cannot do. If you enjoy debating, take a law class and see how it suits you. If you enjoy cooking,
experiment in the kitchen and see what you can make!

Try as hard as you can and let your future worry about itself. Worry about your task at hand
and you will be successful in achieving your dreams. Above all, remember that you are going to be
okay.
( ) 27. From the passage, we can learn that ________.
A. the desire for perfection may cost many students their good health
B. many students devote themselves to the cure for cancer
C. many students ignore the importance of writing good resumes
D. perfect grades are necessary when applying to colleges
( ) 28. What can be concluded from the passage
A. Students’ great desire for perfection actually benefits some industries.
B. Actually, seeking perfection is good for a person’s development.
C. As a member of society, we are responsible for being perfect.
D. We should make full use of our time to do our planned activities.
( ) 29. According to the text, what should people focus on when trying to reach their goals
A. Their resumes. B. Their real interests.
C. Their experiences. D. Their weaknesses.
( ) 30. What is the most important thing to remember when people are achieving their goals
A. Getting rid of worries. B. Never trying what they can’t do.

How to help a teenager make good decisions
Poor decision-making is actually common in teenagers. Naturally, such a habit makes
parent-teen cooperation ( 合作 ) difficult, especially when a parent wants his teen to do what a
“responsible adolescent” would do. A poor decision-making teenager can never run away from his
responsibilities. (31) ________
Distinguish real problems from acts of pure “teenagerism”.
Teens often make poor decisions simply because they don’t have the experiences. By making
small and harmless mistakes, like a recently-developed habit of careless consuming, a teen learns
good decision-making skills on his own via self-correction. (32) ________ Don’t think the teen is
making bad decisions just in order to challenge you. It’s more likely that it is out of a real inability
to determine what’s best for him or her.
(33) ________
Tell your teen you understand his or her decisions while simply saying that you don’t have to
agree with his decisions. By not judging his opinions, tastes or style, you are opening the road for
better communication and problem-solving opportunities.
Set clear expectations.
(34) ________ For example, if your teen refuses to study for his maths final because “maths is
pointless”, explain that you expect him to perform well in school, even in the “pointless” classes.
Find a middle ground.
Trade unimportant freedoms, such as clothing style for the promise that he’ll live up to
academic and family responsibilities. (35) ________ Not only does giving up a bit of control can

solve many conflicts, but the extra freedom you give him can also improve his decision-making
ability.
A. Learn to solve problems.
B. Show tolerance ( 包容 ).
C. Point out your expectations and his responsibilities.
D. Next time, he’ll be more likely to think twice before making his buying decision.
E. Therefore, it’s important to guide them with problem-solving strategies.
F. A responsible adolescent must have role models to learn from.
G. If your teen could realize it, allow him to be himself.

Anita’s new start
Even though it was a beautiful spring day, Anita felt sad as she walked along the beach after
school. Her family had moved to Texas three weeks earlier for her father’s new job. Anita missed
her old home in the mountains of Mexico. She wanted to smell her grandmother’s tortillas ( 玉米
饼 ) warming on the pan and play with her cousin Rosalinda.
Anita thought about her new life in Texas. She thought she would never learn this new
language—everyone spoke so fast. How could she make new friends if she couldn’t even talk to
people “I’m too shy to make new friends anyway,” she thought, feeling disheartened.
Anita decided to try something her mother had taught her. Her mother had said, “Anita,
whenever you’re sad, take a few deep breaths and think about something that makes you happy.”
Anita took a deep breath. She noticed the warm breeze blowing against her skin. She took another
breath and heard the sound of the waves breaking against the shore.
Suddenly a seagull ( 海鸥 ) called out overhead. Anita looked up and said, “Hello there!” She
remembered that she had saved some bread from lunch. She quickly opened the small package.
She broke a piece off one of the bread and threw it into the air. She laughed as the seagull flew
gracefully and caught the cracker in its mouth. Three other seagulls appeared and flew over Anita’s
head.
One seagull landed near Anita and stood frozen like a statue in the sand. Anita noticed that it
was holding its wing away from its body. When she got closer, the seagull hopped away from her.
Anita could tell that its wing was injured. She wanted to help the bird, but she didn’t know what to
do.

第四部分 写作
第一节
Dear Peter,
I have been studying at senior high school for two months, and I’m writing to tell you about
my new good friend in my school. My new friend is a 15-year-old boy called Wang Lin, who is
my classmate with big eyes. He is very outgoing. What’s more, Wang Lin is very kind-hearted,
always ready to help others.
I can still remember there was a time when I had some difficulty with my maths. At that time, I
almost lost heart. Luckily, it was with his help that I made great progress in my maths. If it had not
been for his help, I wouldn’t have improved my maths so greatly in such a short time.
As for friends, I hold the view that friends should always help and encourage each other. How
about your new school life I’m looking forward to your reply!
Wish you all the best.
Yours Sincerely,
Li Hua
第二节
At that moment Anita saw a man and a group of children in the distance. She recognized the
man as Mr Turner, a teacher at her school. He was pointing to something near the water’s edge,
and all the children in the Science Club were listening to him.
Anita looked again at the bird’s wing and decided that this was no time to be shy. She began
walking up the beach towards the group. When she reached them, she saw that they were looking
at a jellyfish that had washed ashore.
Anita took a deep breath and approached Mr Turner. “Hello,” she said quietly. When Mr
Turner looked up, she pointed towards the seagull and asked, “Come, please!”
“Hello, Anita,” Mr Turner said. “What’s wrong ”
Anita pointed towards the bird. Mr Turner pointed to the group. “Come on, everyone,” he said.
“Let’s see what Anita has found.” As the group followed Anita to see the seagull, she noticed a
redheaded girl from her class. The girl caught up with Anita and walked beside her.
Anita smiled at the girl. As they led the group down the beach, Anita, speaking carefully,
asked, “What is your name ”

W: I know. But I should learn to be independent. I can’t live with them all my life. I have to move
out anyway.
M: That’s true. Hey, do you mind sharing an apartment with others
W: No, not at all. Honestly, I can’t afford an apartment alone.
M: Great. My sister and her friend Rose live in a three-bedroom apartment now. You can live in
the empty room.
W: That’s great. How much should I pay
M: Only about $150 a week. You can call my sister and ask her about more information.
W: OK. I’ll call her tonight.
Text 10
M: This is a true story about a French couple, Paul and Maggie, who had just moved to Hong
Kong for a few days and went to a restaurant for a meal. They couldn’t speak Chinese or even
English well, so they had to use body language to order their meal. Well, this seemed to work
all right. The waiter nodded and started to go for the kitchen. Oh, I forgot to mention that they
had their pet dog, Rosa, with them. Maggie reminded her husband that Rosa was hungry. They
called the waiter back and then pointed at Rosa and made eating gestures. The waiter looked
puzzled. But in the end he smiled and nodded and picked up the dog and took it to the kitchen.
After about half an hour, the waiter returned with their main course on a silver dish covered
with a large silver cover. You’ll never believe this, but it really happened. When they lifted the
silver cover they found their dog inside, cooked. They left without having anything.
