London is great. It’s great. Rome and Paris were fine places, but I knew as soon as we landed
in London, this was the finest of the three.
There are only two small things which I don’t like about London. First of all, everyone speaks
English here. I had so much fun in Rome and Paris. There I could speak in foreign languages.
In other words, I made a lot of friends that way. But here everybody can understand me. I don’t
have any reason to start up a conversation with a stranger. And the food in restaurants is the other
problem with London. It is no good at all! I haven’t had one good meal in the three days we’ve
been here.
Since you asked me to write to you about everything I learned on this trip, here is what I’ve
learned about London.

译林社数字化助教资源库·《英语》(必修·第一册)Unit 1 测试卷
London is the capital of the UK. It is the largest city and the largest port in England. In
addition, it is also one of the largest metropolitan areas in Europe. Since the establishment of the
city by the Romans more than 2,000 years ago, London has had great influence all over the world.
The Thames River runs right through the centre of the city. Someone once called the Thames
“liquid history”. It is a very good name. Dozens of armies have crossed it over the past few
thousand years. One of the first was the army of Julius Caesar two thousand years ago. And most
recently Mr and Mrs Gill.
So far I have only had time to visit one neighbourhood. It is called Bloomsbury. In fact there is
a group of writers known as the Bloomsbury Group. It got its name because so many of them lived
there. Virginia Woolf was one of them. I know how much you like her novels.
Baker Street is also part of Bloomsbury. Do you remember who once lived on Baker Street
When I asked Bob this question, he answered, “a man who baked bread, right ” Sherlock Holmes,
of course. I won’t have time to find his address. Maybe you will when you come.
( ) 24. We learn from the first two paragraphs that ________.
A. it is more difficult to start up a conversation in English in London than in any
languages
B. the writer had made a trip in Italy and France before she came to England
C. of all the meals the writer has had in London, only one she thinks is good enough
D. the writer hates to talk to strangers who can speak English
( ) 25. It seems that the writer ________.
A. can speak English as a foreign language B. does not like her mother language
C. does not speak French at all D. can speak French as a foreign language
( ) 26. Who do you think Mr and Mrs Gill are
A. A famous general and his wife. B. A famous American writer and his wife.
C. Two friends of the writer’s. D. The writer and her husband.

One day when I was 12, my mother gave me an order: I was to walk to the public library, and
borrow at least one book for the summer. This was one more weapon for her to defeat my strange
problem—inability to read.
In the library, I found my way into the “Children’s Room”. I sat down on the floor and pulled
a few books off the shelf at random. The cover of a book caught my eye. It presented a picture of a
beagle ( 小猎兔狗 ). I had recently had a beagle, the first and only animal companion I ever had as
a child. He was my secret sharer, but one morning, he was gone, given away to someone who had
the space and the money to care for him. I never forgot my beagle.
There on the book’s cover was a beagle which looked identical to my dog. I ran my fingers
over the picture of the dog on the cover. My eyes ran across the title: Amos, the Beagle with a
Plan. Unknowingly, I had read the title. Without opening the book, I borrowed it from the library
for the summer.
Under the shade of a bush, I started to read about Amos. I read very, very slowly with
difficulty. Though pages were turned slowly, I got the main idea of the story about a dog who, like
mine, had been separated from his family and who finally found his way back home. That dog was
my dog, and I was the little boy in the book. At the end of the story, my mind continued the final
scene of reunion, on and on, until my own lost dog and I were, in my mind, running together.

My mother’s call returned me to the real world. I suddenly realized something: I had read a
book, and I had loved reading that book. Everyone knew I could not read. But I had read it. Books
could be incredibly wonderful and I was going to read them.
I never told my mother about my “miraculous” ( 奇迹般的 ) experience that summer, but
she saw a slow but remarkable improvement in my classroom performance during the next year.
And years later, she was proud that her son had read thousands of books, was awarded a PhD in
literature, and authored his own books, articles, poetry and fiction. The power of the words has
held.

Helping your teens adjust to their new high school
Switching peer groups, adjusting to a new academic schedule, and leaving behind old friends
can be very hard for adolescents. Use these strategies to help your teen adjust to a new school.
Keep a positive attitude
The adjustment period begins before your teen ever steps foot into the new school. Offer a
balanced outlook by acknowledging the challenges of moving, but also recognizing that a new
school may offer exciting new opportunities. Point out the new opportunities that’ll be available.
Avoid saying things like, “Oh, you’ll make new friends right away, so don’t worry about it,” or
- 7 -
译林社数字化助教资源库·《英语》(必修·第一册)Unit 1 测试卷
“It’s not a big deal. I used to change schools all the time.” Instead, say things like, “I understand
you’re worried about how to stay in touch with your old friends.”
Listen to your teen’s concerns
Acknowledge that change can be fort your teen by saying you know it will be hard
for him/her to leave his/her school and friends.
Your teen might not express their feelings with words but you might see some changes in their
behaviour that indicate they are stressed out about the move. Keep asking questions about their
biggest concerns. Are they worried about new teachers Do they doubt their ability to make the
basketball team
Learn about the new school ahead of time
Carry out as much research as possible about the new school before your teen starts attending.
Get your teen involved in finding out about the size of the school, the types of classes offered, and
extra-curricular opportunities etc. Most schools have websites that offer a wealth of information.
Talking to a guidance counsellor or coach ahead of time can also be helpful. If possible,
arrange for your teen to have a tour of the school too.
If at all possible, help your teen meet some students from the new school before the first day.
Seeing a familiar face or two when they are the “new kids” can go a long way towards helping
them settle in.
Life is full of changes. Someday, your teen will likely need to adjust to a new job, a new home,
a new boss, and living with a partner. So changing schools can be a good practice for embracing
changes.

Be active! Class is one of the few opportunities we can take to practise English. When
someone else is called on, we should think about our own answers. Doing so will keep us more
actively engaged in the class and will also help us learn the materials that others are talking about.
Take chances! Many of us hate participating in class because we fear looking stupid or
sounding funny. But taking chances and trying to communicate is the only way to be a fluent and
comfortable speaker.
Take notes! It makes sense to put down the language points the English teacher delivers. Also,
make a note of any word or phrase that is unfamiliar, or any topic of conversation that we have
trouble following.
第二节
It’s challenging to say good-bye to old friends and adapt to a new school, so it’s necessary
for you to offer a helping hand to your kid. First, try to get your kid to keep a positive attitude.
Second, listen to your teen’s concerns and see how your kid responds to new surroundings. Third,
together with your kid, learn about the new school, have a chat with a teacher, and meet some
students. Adapting your kid to new schools helps him/her adapt to new opportunities in the future.

Text 1
W: I’ve been calling David for the past half an hour, but I keep getting a busy signal.
M: Well, if you don’t get him soon we’ll just have to go to the movies without him.
Text 2
M: Do you have any special plans for tomorrow If you’d like, I can treat you to the movies
tomorrow afternoon.
W: Well, I have a doctor’s appointment at noon, and I’m going to have dinner with my brother at
six. I could probably enjoy a movie in between, since it’s your treat.
Text 3
W: Hey, George. I can’t get to sleep with the lights so near my bed. Can you study someplace
else
M: Sorry, there is a party going on near the classroom. I suppose I can check the dining room
though.
Text 4
M: I’m going to town. Is there anything I can do for you there
W: Hmm... Could you buy me an English dictionary
Text 5
M: Can I walk your dog
W: Well, sometimes he gets too playful. He wouldn’t make you bleed, but it could hurt. I’m trying
to train him not to bite.
M: That’s OK. I’ll take my chances. He looks friendly to me.
Text 6
M: Hey, Mary. Do you ever feel like leaving this town in the future
W: I think about it all the time, John. You know what I’d like to do
M: Rent a car and drive until you run out of gas
W: No. That must be your dream. I want to live on an island in the middle of the sea.
M: And do what What would you do on a desert island
W: I don’t want to live by myself! I’ll find a place where interesting people live. Maybe it’ll be an
island where people make their own wine. Yeah! I want to live somewhere in the sea. I’ll make
wine and search for hidden treasure…
M: I didn’t know you had such great thoughts, Mary.
W: There’s a lot you don’t know about me, John. I’m a small-town kid with big dreams!
Text 7
M: Hi, Susan. Where were you at lunchtime I was saving a seat for you in the dining hall.
W: Oh, sorry to have missed you. I went to the library and looked for some books there.
M: Have you found the books you need
W: Yes. I got two science books to prepare for my science exam.
M: When will you take the exam
W: On June 15th. There are still two weeks left. So I have enough time to prepare for it.
M: Great. I was wondering if you want to go sailing with me this weekend.
W: I’d love to, but I have a history exam next Monday.

W: About 10 days.
M: How are you feeling Are you sad now
W: Up until yesterday, I was really excited to go. But now, I feel a bit sad, because I’m going to
miss my friends and my pet rabbit. What am I going to do without him
M: I think you’ll be very happy there. Right now, you’ve got a lot to think about. If you are
worried or sad about something and want to talk, make sure to call me or e-mail me. I’ll be

M: Can I help you, madam
W: Yes. Did you have this room checked before we moved in The toilet doesn’t seem to have
enough power and the water doesn’t flow away in the shower. What do you want to say about
that
M: I’m extremely sorry to hear that. I’ll attend to it right away. We usually check every room
before new guests move in. This mistake occurs maybe because we’ve been busy with a large
conference recently.
W: That’s not what you should do, after all. One doesn’t expect this sort of thing here.
M: No, madam. I do apologize. It’s most unusual. We will try to check the room as thoroughly as
possible. Anything else
W: Well, your air conditioning doesn’t seem to be working very well. It’s so hot up here.
M: I’ll just try to make it work better and you’ll find it a little cooler in a short time. Also I’ll send
someone along right away to look at the toilet and the shower.
