Ways to describe food
When she places them on the table, they look adorable-small, round and shiny golden-brown. The delicious smell soon reaches my nose and my mouth starts to water. When I pick up a mooncake, it feels warm and heavy in my hand. As I take each bite, the sweet and mild flavour of the red bean filling slowly fills my mouth.
Example 1
There are three layers of the cake and the cheese is between the layers, making the dessert feel soft and smooth. There is also a bitter taste of coffee but this flavour is not very strong. Tiramisu does not look very attractive-it’s brown, because of the coffee and dark chocolate, and white, because of the cream and cheese-but all these ingredients make it taste delicious!

Sentence patterns to describe food
My favourite food is dumplings. With a variety of fillings ranging from all sorts of meat and vegetables to seafood, dumplings taste fresh and delicious. The shapes of dumplings can be different, usually meniscus or angular. Nowadays they are even made into flowers, birds, fish, more like arts and crafts than pure food.
A sample for appreciation
It has been a tradition for my family to make and eat dumplings on the Eve of Chinese New Year in my memory, when everyone was involved and laughter lingered in the room. Mom prepared the dough and fillings, and others occupied themselves in making their unique dumplings. The most exciting moment was boiling dumplings and waiting for the first bites. My mouth began watering the minute I saw a plate of hot dumplings in front of me. With dipping sauce, the sour flavour of vinegar combined with refreshing fillings slowly filled my mouth. Dumplings are always my favourite because of its satisfying taste that is out of this world and the happy memories it brings to mind.

As writers, we must convey not just a sense of taste and smell to a reader, but how it looks, the feelings of the first bite, and everything else. We basically have to be descriptive and precise about everything—which is a skill worth practising!
