Long ago, Mother Nature gave each tree a different purpose. However, she did not share her
reasons with the trees.
Fir Tree (杉树) had many tree friends. In summer, they watched Bird and Squirrel (松鼠 )
play in the field. The autumn arrived. The leaves on other trees turned colourful. Fir Tree’s leaves
stayed green. Fir Tree told Mother Nature that he wanted his leaves to change colours too.

ran up Fir Tree’s branches. Soon, she was warm, comfortable and asleep.
Fir Tree was happy that his green leaves provided a warm home for animals in winter. He
finally understood his purpose.

man gave East Mountain to Qing Shan and West Mountain to Hong Shan.
There were many trees in West Mountain. Hong Shan worked hard all day to cut down trees
for firewood. Five years later, there were not many trees in the mountain, so he started to plant
crops (庄稼). Unluckily, a heavy rain washed away all the crops. He had nothing to eat and had to
go to his brother in East Mountain.
There were only a few trees in East Mountain at first, but Qing Shan had a plan. He first cut
down the trees with poor quality and then planted some trees. He planted crops and fed cows and
horses, too. Five years later, there were many trees, crops, cows and horses in the mountain. The
