When it came to role models, Diana Ortiz said her mother, Marcia Dominguez, was the “hero”. Ms. Dominguez came to the United States from Cuba in 1979. She went to college and got a job as a social worker — all the while raising three children in America mostly on her own.
“It was always school first,” Diana said, “My mom had us in a straight line. If we got out of line, she corrected us. She was a perfect woman. She was beautiful, she had the education and she had everything — but the illness took over. When I was 11, it frightened me to see how quickly my mother's health was ruined by cancer. A week before I turned 14, my mother died at age 50. I had tried to prepare myself, but on the first morning I woke up without my mother, the sense of loss was painful.”
Diana had not seen her father for five years, who refused to provide for her. Diana then entered the city's foster care system. She has spent about four years in foster homes.
Despite Diana's hard teenage years, the values her mother had planted in her mind inspired her to go after higher education. Since August 2010, she has been a fulltime student majoring in law. A public organization offers her tuition but she has part time jobs to help people like her and earn more life experience. Her goal is a job in the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
For now, Diana works 20 hours a week as a cashier at Marshalls, earning D|S7.25 an hour. In November, she moved into her own public housing studio apartment on the Lower East Side. She pays D|S236 a month in rent. Although she is out of foster care, Diana has been speaking at workshops for foster youths. She emphasizes that nothing should get in the way of their success, not the trials of their lives or what they may have lost.
“I tell the young who have the similar experience like me, ‘Why are you going to let what happened to you affect you in the long run?’” Diana said, “ ‘Why are you going to sit there and feel sorry for yourself You're wasting precious time.’ It is a message my mother would approve of. My mom taught me that everything is not given to you. You have to go out and get it.”
4.Which of the following words can be used to describe Ms. Dominguez
A.Learned, independent and strict.
B.Positive, simple and graceful.
C.Hardworking, dependent and tough.
D.Kind, determined and lonely.
5.How did Diana grow up after her mother passed away
A.She was provided for by a law institute.
B.She depended on foster care system.
C.She relied upon the people like her.
D.She supported herself by doing part time work.
6.What made Diana go on with her education despite there are so many difficulties
A.The sense of loss from her mother's death.
B.The eagerness to achieve success.
C.The deep influence of her mother's values.
D.The wish to win prizes to please her mother.
7.With provided tuition, Diana still works after school because she knows ________.
A.success comes with her own struggle and efforts
B.rich experience helps her find better jobs
C.her tuition will be increased sharply
D.nobody is perfect in the world
C
Some things should just be common knowledge by now. The Earth isn’t flat. Nope, your hair and nails don’t grow after you die. The holes at the top of Bic biro pens are there so that, if you swallow one accidentally, you can still breathe and won’t choke to death. It’s debatable whether that last one there is common knowledge or not. A quick Google search of the fact, rewritten as a question, shows articles addressing this point going back several years, with the latest (re)appearing just this week over on ScienceAlert. We suppose it’s one of those things that come up from time to time, like what would happen if you attack Yellowstone with a nuclear weapon (not much, as it turns out).
If you jump over to Bic’s website, under their FAQs (frequently asked questions), it quite clearly states: "The reason that some BIC pens have a hole in their cap is to prevent the cap from completely obstructing the airway if accidentally breathed in. This is requested by the international safety standards ISO11540, except for in cases where the cap is considered too large to be a choking risk."
That’s rather lovely of them. In appreciation of their want to not kill off their more clumsy customers, we thought we’d share a few more random facts about Bic that are probably going to come up in a pub quiz one day. Did you know, for example, that each Bic ballpoint pen can produce at least 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) of ink before it begins to run out In fact, in 2018, 7,250 kilometers (4,505 miles) of writing tests on such pens were carried out on ballpoint pens, gel pens(中性笔), and rollers to make sure they worked to the highest standard.
The best part of the Bic site, however, is this rather curious fact: "100 percent of pen balls are made through a highly-controlled process." As opposed to a highly uncontrolled process, involving explosions and bouncy castles and total chaos, we suppose.
8.Why does the author mention the case of Yellowstone
A.To list the facts. B.To prove his point.
C.To compare the two situations. D.To emphasize the importance of safety.
9.What does the underlined word "obstructing" in paragraph 2 mean
A.Block. B.Open. C.Transform. D.Narrow.
10.Why were the writing tests on pens carried out
A.To work out their lifespan. B.To assure their good quality.
C.To prove some random facts. D.To compare different pens with each other.
11.In what tone does the author develop the text
A.Critical. B.Acid. C.Humorous. D.Serious.
D
The over 48,000 orange trees that are distributed at all corners of Seville, Spain, not only fill the city's air with the pleasant smell of their flowers in spring, they also produce over 16, 500 tons of fruit every winter. Though that makes the city Europe's top orange-producing city, the fruit is too sour to be consumed fresh. While some of the produce is used to make orange juice, most of it ends up in Seville's landfills. However, that may change soon thanks to a creative idea to use the oranges to produce clean energy.
In the pilot program, juice from 38. 6 tons of oranges will be left to ferment (发酵)in an existing biogas facility. The juice is fructose (果糖)made up of very short carbon chains, and the energetic performance of these carbon chains during the fermentation process is particularly high. The gas released from the fermented liquid will be used to drive a generator to produce clean power. The officials estimate the test run will generate about 1,500 kWh of energy—enough to run a water purification plant. "It's not just about saving money. The oranges are a problem for the city, and we're producing added value from waste,M said Benigno Lopez, the head of Emasesa's environmental department.
If successful, by 2023, the city hopes to recycle all the oranges and add the electricity generated back to its grid (电网). In trial runs, 1,000 kilos (2,200 pounds) of oranges produced 50 kWh of clean energy一enough to meet the daily electricity needs of five homes. The project team estimates that if all the fruit is recycled, it will produce enough energy to power as many as 73,000 residences.
The latest effort is among the many programs implemented in Spain to achieve the country's goal of switching its electricity system to renewable sources by 2050—and if everything goes according to plan, fully decarbonizing its economy shortly after that.
12.What problem does Seville face
A.It is short of energy. B.Most oranges are wasted.
C.Fruit production is falling. D.Trees take up much space.
13.What's the final product of the fermentation process
A.Fructose. B.Carbon chains. C.Clean power. D.Gas.
14.What does the underlined word "implemented" in the last paragraph probably mean
A.Conducted. B.Assumed. C.Popularized. D.Completed.
15.What is the author's main purpose in writing the text
A.To prove a theory. B.To raise a problem.
C.To introduce a project. D.To comment on an idea.

Unlike most U.S national parks, Everglades national park, located in south Florida, was created to protect a fragile ecosystem(生态系统)instead of safeguarding a unique geographic feature. It is a heaven for a wide range of wildlife, such as turtles, snakes, lizards, the Grass frog, Wading birds and so on, among which are fierce American alligators(鳄鱼). It is said that some of the alligators often appear in the areas where people live, causing much damage.
A terrible incident happened on a hot summer day. It was so hot a day that nearly every one felt like jumping into the cool water. A little boy simply couldn’t put up with the heat, deciding to go fora swim in the old swimming hole behind his house.
“Mum, it being so hot, I want to have a swim.” the boy told his mother while walking out.
“No, Honey, there has been a warning that an alligator from the park has appeared in the surrounding area. It is dangerous!” said his mother in a loud voice. But the little boy rushed out of the back door like a gust of wind before his mother could stop him.
He was in such a hurry to dive into the cool water that he left behind shoes, socks, and shirt as he left.
He flew into the water and enjoyed the comfortable feeling that the cool water brought him, not realizing that as he swam toward the middle of the lake, an alligator was swimming toward him. His mother was preparing dinner in the kitchen when suddenly she caught the two getting closer and closer to each other as she was looking out of the window. “Oh, My God!” she couldn’t help crying loudly, getting into a great panic. And then in great fear, she ran toward the water, shouting to her son as loudly as she could all the way, “Alligator, Alligator!”
Hearing her voice, the little boy became alarmed and made a U-turn to swim to his mother. However, it was too late. Something horrible was happening.

47.参考答案一:
Just as he approached her, the alligator reached him. From the shore, the mother grabbed her little boy tightly by the arms just as the alligator snatched his legs. It seemed as if it were an incredible tug-of-war between the two. The alligator was much stronger than the mother, but the mother was much too devoted to let go. Fortunately, a farmer happened to drive by. Hearing their screams, he raced from his truck, took aim and shot the alligator. Seriously wounded, the boy was rushed to the hospital.
Remarkably, after weeks in the hospital, the little boy survived. His legs were extremely scarred by the attack of the animal. And on his arms were deep scratches, where his mother’s fingernails dug into his flesh in her effort to hold onto the son she loved. When asked to show his scars, the boy lifted his legs and then with obvious pride, he said to people coming to see him, “But look at my arms. I have great scars on my arms, too. I have them because my mom wouldn’t let go.”
参考答案二:
Just as he approached her, the alligator reached him. Deeply shocked by the terrible scene, mother rushed to her son, catching hold of him tightly, with all her might. However, the alligator was much stronger than the mother. In spite of this, mother was so determined that she wouldn’t let go of her son, screaming for help at the same time. Hearing the frightening cry, a neighbor rushed out, with a gun in his hand, took aim and then shot the alligator. The boy got saved, but seriously injured.
Remarkably, after weeks in the hospital, the little boy survived. Seeing his mother and the neighbor sitting beside him, the boy hugged his mother, with tears in his eyes, feeling greatly regretful that he didn’t listen to her. Both of them expressed sincere gratitude to the neighbor. Without him, the son would have lost his life. And then the neighbor suggested putting up a warning sign at the side of the lake to inform others of the danger. The boy understood the significance of safety from then on.
