It was last August. We were on vacation, just me, my husband, and our two kids, out for a nice, safe, socially distanced week away. We went to a popular place called Diana's Baths, where the water falls off a series of flat rocks up the mountain. The baths were full of families, so we made our way to one of the upper levels of rock to keep our distance.
Both where we sat and down below, the water fell down and into small pools, where kids in swimsuits were playing water around. I was frightened as I saw my two boys jump between the smooth rocks. I told them to stay away from all those edges. But I soon relaxed, and we were all having fun, laughing in the pools.
Suddenly, I turned and saw my son Wyatt sitting down between two rocks in fast-moving water. I shouted at him to get out. He called back something that I couldn't hear, and then he disappeared over the edge. All I remember from the moments after was screaming, over and over, like a prayer, “Somebody help my son!” I didn't even know what help he needed, because I couldn't force myself to look.
My husband was already jumping down the rocks. I finally looked. Wyatt was sitting up-he was alive. My biggest fear was gone. As I held my younger son, Jed, close, I heard another woman scream. “That child just went over the waterfall!” she shouted at her husband. “We are leaving!” They walked away, never even looking back to see whether our child was OK.
It was about 4 meters from the top of the waterfall to the pool below, which was filled with huge rocks. Wyatt had fallen on his back, straight onto the rocks. That's what Lisa told us. We didn't know her name was Lisa at that point. All we knew was that while everyone else looked on from a distance, too afraid or unbothered to help, Lisa didn't hesitate.

By morning, Afiq knew what he had to do. He had not slept a wink but had sat in the balcony all night thinking. He stretched his body and went back to his room. His brother Affin was still asleep.
It was Saturday and there was no school. Afiq's mother asked him to buy some groceries for her. On his way out, he glanced at his motorcycle with the broken front lamp and scratches on the side. Afiq straightened his shoulders and went to complete his purchase.
It was late morning when Afiq was free to carry out his plan. He marched down the road to Osman's house. When he arrived, Aniya appeared at the doorway and greeted him warmly. She invited him in and served him tea and some cakes. Afiq nervously asked to speak to Osman. She told him that her father was out but would be home very soon. Sure enough, the elderly man returned in ten minutes.
Afiq cleared his throat a few times and said that he had come to confess (坦白). “I'm so sorry. I was careless yesterday and knocked into your parked car,” Afiq said. Osman looked at the 17-year-old youth, surprised, “So, you are saying that you are the culprit (肇事者) who crashed into my car and then ran away ” Afiq went red. He nodded, “I'm sorry for not telling you earlier. I was too frightened.”
The elderly man smiled and said, “But you're not too frightened to confess now ”
Afiq said uncertainly, “I could not sleep last night thinking about it. I knew I had to do the right thing.”
Osman was silent for a minute before saying in a kind voice, “Do you think it a right thing to cover up for your brother ”

3.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Emma sighed for many times. However hard she tried, she couldn't shake off her disappointment. She and her best friend, Amy, had been planning a shopping day for weeks.
So busy had they been with their final exams that they barely had time to text each other. Emma looked at her empty desk and was reminded of how she had exhausted herself to the breaking point to get ahead in her class, so that she could spend the whole day with Amy. It seemed as if their time together wasn't as important to Amy considering the fact that she had called her a few minutes ago to tell her that she wouldn't be able to keep her promise. Apparently, her other friends dragged her away for a weekend.
Emma tried to take a deep breath even though there was an invisible heavy weight around her heart. She hated to act like someone who was eager for attention, so she just laughed off their plans in front of Amy and made a half-hearted attempt to reschedule them. She sat down heavily in her chair and opened her books.
For the next couple of days, she didn't get any texts or calls from Amy. Her calls went straight to voicemail and her texts were unread. Emily didn’t think too much of this and reasoned that she must have been busy with her new friends.
After a few more days of no contact with Amy, she felt anxious and wondered what had happened, because Amy never ignored her calls. She decided to visit her professors. The trip took her about half an hour. On her arrival, she searched the unfamiliar building for the right class number. She knocked on the door and tapped her foot impatiently. The professor told her Amy was working part-time in the cafe on the other side of the campus.

Once, there was a poor boy. He made a living by selling things from door to door. Through this, he could earn some money to pay for his school.
One day, as he was walking from house to house as usual, he felt very hungry and weak. He felt that he couldn't walk even a few steps. He decided to ask for food at a house. So he knocked at the door. He was amazed to see a very beautiful young girl open the door for him. He asked the girl for a glass of water instead of a meal.
The young girl thought he must be hungry and thirsty. So she offered him a huge glass of milk. With a surprised look, the boy drank the milk very slowly. At once, he felt he was full of energy.
"How much do I pay you for this milk " he asked the girl.
"I do not want any money for this," she replied. "Morn has taught me never to accept pay for a kindness."
The boy thanked the girl from the bottom of his heart and left the place. As the boy left that house, he felt stronger physically. He thought he must do something else to help others.
Years passed by quickly. Both the boy and the young girl grew up. In the girl's youth, unluckily, she fell ill. She suffered from an uncommon disease. It was hard for the local doctors to cure her. Even many doctors with rich experience didn't know how to cure her. Finally, she was sent to a hospital in a big city. There were many excellent doctors and the most advanced skills in the hospital.
Dr. Kevin was a well-known doctor. He was called in by the hospital to examine the girl. When he heard the name of the town that she came from, a strange light filled his eyes. Immediately, he rose and went down through the hospital hall into her room.

“Look.” Mom waved a flyer in front of the television. “Summer field trips for sixth-graders. Nature. Exercise. Fresh air.”
“No, thanks,” I said, still working the remote.
“You'll love hiking, Jimmy, she said. “Besides, couch potatoes need exercise.”
“But —” “If you don't like the first one, you don't have to go again,” she said before I could finish.
OK, I thought. Just one day.
That day was the hottest on record. The moment I woke up, I started to sweat. I got dressed. Long pants tucked into heavy socks, T-shirt, boots, backpack, water bottles. All required for the hike.
As we boarded the school bus, I met Mr. Hawkins, our guide. The bus finally stopped near a forest, and we got out. Our destination for the day was “the Lemon Squeeze.” But I had no idea what that was.
We quickly started our hiking after we got off the bus. Ahead, some kid kicked an old tree stump. A girl suddenly screamed and ran. A buzzing noise grew louder. Wasps(黄蜂)! Mr. Hawkins drove away the wasps with his shirt and we managed to run away.
We continued hiking for another hour until Mr. Hawkins decided that we should stop for lunch. It was too hot for anyone to complain, because complaining would only make it worse. What's worst was more hiking. It was getting hotter and hotter. Mr. Hawkins kept telling us to keep drinking water to keep hydrated. We drank, and sweated.
Water was low. Up ahead was a crossroads.
“OK, folks,” Mr. Hawkins said. “This heat is fierce. Do we finish, or do we take this shortcut back to the bus It's a quarter mile uphill from here to our destination.”
I closed my eyes. Please, someone, say GO BACK TO THE BUS! I didn't want to be the wimp(懦弱的人).

A little boy almost thought of himself as the unluckiest child in the world because poliomyelitis (小儿麻痹症)made him unable to walk like normal people. He seldom played with his classmates, and when the teacher asked him to answer questions, he always lowered his head without a word.
One spring, the boy's father asked for some young trees from the neighbor. He wanted to plant them in the front of the house. He told his children to plant a tree each person. The father said to the children, "Whose tree grows best, I will buy him or her a favorite gift" The boy also wanted to get his father's gift. But seeing his brothers and sisters carrying water to water the trees happily, he had a terrible idea: he hoped the tree he planted would die soon. So he never attended to it.
A few days later, when the little boy went to see his tree again, he was surprised to find it not only didn't die, but also grew some fresh leaves, and compared with the trees of his brother and sister, his appeared greener and more vital. Better to Give than to Receive
When a special occasion arrives, a gift often finds its way to a doorstep or an office desk. But once in a while, a present arrives at an unexpected moment as a reminder that someone is thinking about us.
Wanda Anderson remembers such a gift.
The rosebushes were finally in full bloom that day. Seeing roses always brings to mind Wanda's childhood memories. To this young girl, those flowers were a luxury. "We never had money to buy extra things, so even a tired rose was something to cherish," Wanda said.
Nowadays, to have a backyard filled with many different roses is pure enjoyment. Wanda especially loves the very first blooms. Her husband, Dale, devotedly tends the roses and knows this little fact about his wife. So, on this particular morning, he picked the very first flowers of spring, fresh from the garden, just for Wanda.
But as Dale came back, he was met by a neighbor who had dropped by. As the woman turned to go, Dale graciously (有风度地)handed the roses to her. Even though their visitor insisted she didn't want to take them, she was repeatedly assured that the flowers were hers to keep.
“I told her I was happy for her to keep them, but I really wasn't," Wanda said, recalling the emotions she was feeling right then. Seeing her very precious first blooms go out of the door filled her with regret.
Throughout the rest of the morning, Wanda argued with herself, knowing logically it was “better to give than to receive. Nevertheless, she wished she could have kept the roses for herself.
Later that day, the couple just arrived at the post office, where they were about to park the car.

I was a taxi driver, a father of a 16-year-old boy at that time. My son was good at school, and he would graduate from senior high school and go to university, but he was hesitating to choose his future job and he always changed his mind. I did give him advice but he didn’t follow it. And one Monday morning, I stopped at New York Hospital when I found a well-dressed man coming over. He was waving to me. I waited patiently until he jumped into the taxi. “La Guardia Airport, please.” He said.
As always, I wondered about my passenger. So I asked, “What do you do ” “I am working at the hospital.” For some unknown reason, I decided to ask for his help.
“Could I ask a favor ” He didn’t answer at first. But I continued, “I have a son, 16. He’s doing well in school. He will graduate from senior high school. He wants a job this summer. Is there any possibility that you might get him a summer job ” After a minute, he said, “The medical students have a research project. Maybe he could fit in. Have him send me his school records.” He searched his pocket and handed me a card.
That evening, when I got home, I pulled the card from my pocket. “Robbie,” I said proudly, “This could be a summer job for you. Send him your school records.” Robbie took the card and read it out loud, “Fred Plum, New York Hospital.” “Is this a joke ” he said in doubt. After I shouted and threatened to cut off his pocket-money, Robbie promised to send off his grades the next morning.

9.My mother always told me it was better to be smart than to be beautiful. “If you are smart, finally you will afford to be beautiful.” All I needed were the brains, and someday, I would be a really beautiful lawyer.
My mother worked at a TV station and I would come along and watch the magic of filming TV shows. But all the same, I was learning.
When my father’s business failed, I was able to continue to attend one of the best bilingual(双语的)schools in Mexico City thanks to scholarship. Scholarship followed me into middle school and high school.
However, during my senior year in high school my family moved to my dad’s country, the United States. For the first time in my life, I had optional(可选择的) classes. So I decided to take psychology class. While I found the public school system to be a joke, I did find my psychology class attractive. My mother, in her dreams for my life, did not see psychology as a good choice, but I was like her, strong-willed to the subject.
I married young, even before I had a degree under my belt. Worst of all, I married a kid who wanted to be poster(牧师). My mother loved Andy dearly but she would ask him occasionally, “ When will you have a real job ” I did finish my degree and I became a social worker, but when I had my first child at age 24, I quit my job. Then at 26, another baby girl joined our family. Unfortunately, this baby girl had Down syndrome(唐氏综合症).
How would I be able to break the news to my mother “ It is better to be smart than to be beautiful.” I knew what “smart” meant in the statement, and I doubted if my with an extra chromosome(染色体) would meet those expectations. My mom was coming to the hospital to meet her new grand-baby. I would tell her then. I needed time to gather my thoughts. I was afraid, afraid that she would see Nichole as one that would never be smart... or beautiful.

Sara Savick remembers one special Easter when she was nine years old. Her parents gave her a baby duckling in a yellow basket.
“Mom said later that she bought the little duck because she felt sorry for it,” recalled Sara. The people at the pet store colored the feathers pink for Easter. Sara named the duck Pinky.
Sara’s mother really didn’t think the baby duck would survive very long. But to her surprise, Pinky grew and got stronger and stronger. Soon, the little duckling was a healthy, hungry duck with white feathers.
“We fed Pinky oatmeal, cooked and uncooked, and small pieces of vegetables,” said Sara. Pinky lived inside the house with Sara and her family. She specially fancied taking baths with Sara. Everyone treated Pinky as a family member.
But just when everything appeared to be perfect, the night of the “talk” came. Sara’s Mom and Dad sat her down, explaining that the best thing for Pinky was to live a normal duck life, with other ducks. It was not natural for ducks to live indoors with a family, her father told her. He added Pinky needed to swim in ponds and do all the same things that ducks in the wild do.
Sara started to cry, knowing what was going to happen. Sara’s parents decided to take Pinky to a park, which was two miles away. There was a pond with a lot of other ducks. Pinky would have the chance to live a natural life and Sara could still visit her.
The big day came, Sara and her parents put Pinky in a box and drove to the park. Sara said that Pinky did not look happy; maybe Pinky was convinced that she was a human, not a duck.

参考答案
1.Later, Lisa told me that she was a nurse. In fact, by the time I climbed down the rocks and my husband pulled Wyatt out of the water, she had already called 911. She put a red, white, and blue towel under Wyatt's head. She told us to keep him still and on his back in case he had injured his bones. I finally had time to ask her name. “Lisa,” she said. “And I'm not leaving you.”
The rescue team finally came. They took Wyatt out of the park to the nearest hospital. Wyatt had three broken bones and a wound in lung—injuries that sound terrible but recover on their own. As soon as I knew that Wyatt was going to be OK, my thoughts fell to Lisa. If she had not stepped up, would someone else have done so Perhaps. But it was her. She was the one who went toward the unthinkable instead of turning away.

It was the biggest night of my life—opening night. Hours of preparation, daily rehearsals, and weeks of perfecting songs had gone into this production. I had recited my line a thousand times, convinced that my one sentence would be the highlight of the show,if only I delivered it with just the right amount of expression. This was big. Bigger than big. This was influential, a big event for every second grader to pass through my elementary school. This was the second grade play.
There was just one problem. My mom and dad wouldn’t be attending the musical. It wasn’t that they didn’t want to;they would have gone if they could. There was just one thing standing in the way, a six-letter word that my seven-year-old brain hadn’t quite processed yet: cancer. My mom’s surgery was scheduled on the same night as the second grade play, quite possibly the most important night in all of my seven years of life.
My parents had explained it all to me. The cancer was making my mommy sick, and she needed the doctors to take it out as soon as possible. But as they said, the show must go on.
Soon the big moment came, and we all filed onto the stage and stood seriously looking out at the audience of moms, dads, siblings and grandparents. The show began, and my second grade class started singing with off-key but nevertheless angelic seven-year-old voices.
Finally,it was my turn to speak. The kid standing next to me made an attempt to hand over the microphone, and I took a deep breath before beginning my line. As I started to speak, I noticed something had gone horribly wrong. Blood rushed to my face when I realized that the microphone was not turned on. Embarrassed, I turned it over and switched the device on. I then proceeded to say my line as quickly as possible and hand the microphone off.Looking out,I couldn’t find any comforting faces, and I just knew that I had messed up.

A Christmas Tree for Mrs. Mueller
The black-and-white photograph of Mrs. Mueller that I took pictured her seated on the sofa in our living room, smiling shyly. Mrs. Mueller was our next—door neighbor when my sister and I were growing up.
We got to know her after her husband died. She didn’t have children of her own and no relatives that we knew of. She was gentle and kind, and Laurel and I considered her our special friend.
Early one December, Mrs. Mueller went into the hospital. Laurel and I were busy making Christmas presents, and we pondered (思考) what to make for Mrs. Mueller. She would be coming home a few days before Christmas to an empty house with no holiday decorations. We lit upon the idea of decorating a small tree that would greet her with lights and cheer. We were wondering how to carry out our plan when the answer appeared
I was in Miss O’Keefe’s sixth grade class that year, and we had decorated a small tree with paper-link chains and ornaments (装饰品) we’d made in art class. It was beautiful. Best of all, it had to be removed from the classroom before Christmas vacation.
Miss O’Keefe said there would be a drawing (抽签) for the tree. We’d each write our name on a piece of paper and put it through the slot (窄缝) in the shoebox she had decorated. On the last day of school before vacation, she’d draw a name from the box, and that student could take home the tree.
As I put the folded piece of paper with my name “Holly Wheeler” into the box, I was beside myself with excitement, hoping I could be the lucky dog. My mother pointed out there were 30 children who might win the tree, but I was certain I would get it because our purpose was good: We wanted to make Mrs. Mueller happy.

Sandra Park was an old lady who lived alone. One day, she left the supermarket, finding a couple of homeless young people lining the streets. Three of them saw Sandra struggling with her plastic bags, so they decided to help her. “Would you like us to carry your grocery bags ” one of them said.
“Oh, you are so nice. Please, I’d appreciate that a lot,” she said, handing over the bags to the three men.
Walking her to her house, the three introduced themselves as Allan, James, and Samuel. When they got to her house, she asked if they wanted to come in for a meal. As the three men were hungry, they happily accepted the generous offer.
Sandra’s house was in bad condition, as she never learned how to call for help to repair the broken things in her house. When the three men saw what was happening, they offered to help her again.
After their lunch, the boys got busy helping her fix several things such as the roof, the fence, and bathroom tiles.
“I hope you don’t mind me asking, Sandra, but why are you all alone here ” Samuel asked her one day while they were fixing the pipes of her kitchen sink.
“Well, I lived most of my life in this town. I taught economics and marketing in the local high school for years. So I decided to purchase this house and I’ve lived here ever since,” she explained.
They asked her if she was willing to teach them economics and marketing.
“I would love to teach you! Sandra excitedly replied. In the evenings, she started to teach the three men. This routine brought them closer to one another, and Sandra started seeing them as her children.
One day, however, they told Sandra that it would be the last lesson they’d be taking with her. “You’ve been extremely kind to us, and we really value your presence, but we think it’s time for us to try to do something with our lives,” Allan explained.

Sports are important in our family. Both of our sons were high-school athletes in our town of Verden. So I shouldn’t have been surprised when Lauren announced she was going out for the girls’ Dear Jack, Yours, Li Huabasketball team. But I was. At just five feet, one inch tall, our daughter’s lack of height wasn’t my worry. She has Down syndrome (唐氏综合症).
My wife and I never told Lauren that she was different. We treated her like our other children. We didn’t want her to feel disabled or different because she had Down syndrome.
“I’m gonna play basketball, Daddy.” Lauren ran to meet me when I came in from work. She flew into my arms and lingered long in my embrace. Unlike some sixteen-year-olds, Lauren was outwardly affectionate (亲切的).
“That’s nice, honey,” I replied automatically, and patted her shoulder. Walking into the kitchen, I kissed my wife Laura on the cheek. Laura spoke slowly, her tone steady. “What Lauren’s trying to tell you is that she’s joining the girls’ high-school basketball team.”
Just as my wife’s words sunk in, I heard Lauren behind me.
“I’m gonna be a Lady Tiger,” she whooped, skipping into the room and throwing her arms in the air. She raced out of the kitchen to one of her favorite activities, watching cartoons on television. Everything that could happen flashed through my mind. What should we do Parenting seldom had clear-cut answers, and bringing up a child with a disability was an additional challenge.
Mid-November, the season’s first basketball game arrived. I settled into a seat on the second row with the rest of my family. Before the game, cheerleaders (啦啦队) were running on the court, dancing and jumping. The game got off to a good start, but soon Verden was behind. Even after a rally (反弹) in the second half, I knew the Lady Tigers were certain to lose. Just less than two minutes were left, and Verden was down by seventeen points. Coach called a time-out. The announcer’s voice echoed over the public-address system. “Number thirty-three, Lauren Wray, in for the Lady Tigers.” My heart pounding, I watched wide-eyed. Lauren was in the game.

I was a vet in Yorkshire. One day I received a call from Mrs Tompkin asking me to cut the beak (喙) of her budgie (虎皮鹦鹉). I armed myself with a pair of clippers and stepped onto the narrow strip of pavement which separated the door from the road. A pleasant-looking red-haired woman answered my knock.
“I’m Mrs Dodds from next door,” she said. “I keep an eye on the old lady. She’s over eighty and lives alone.”
She led me into the cramped little room. “Here’s Mr Herriot coming to see Peter for you,” she said to the old woman who sat in a corner. Mrs Tompkin nodded and smiled, “Oh that’s good. Poor little fella can hardly eat with its long beak and I’m worried about him. He’s my only companion, you know.”
“Yes, I understand, Mrs Tompkin.” I looked at the cage by the window with the green budgie perched (栖息) inside. “These little birds can be wonderful company when they start chattering.”
She laughed, “Yes, but it’s a funny thing. Peter never has said that much. I think he’s lazy! But I just like having him with me.”
“Of course you do,” I said, “but he certainly needs attention now.”
The beak was greatly overgrown, curving away down till it touched the feathers of the breast. I would be able to revolutionize his life with one quick snip from my clippers. The way I was feeling this job was right up my street.
I opened the cage door and slowly inserted my hand.
“Come on, Peter,” I wheedled (哄骗). As I lifted him out, I felt in my pocket with the other hand for the clippers. Then I stopped.
The tiny head was no longer poking cheekily from my fingers but had fallen loosely to one side. The eyes were closed. He was dead.
Mrs Dodds and I looked at each other in horror. When I turned my head towards Mrs Tompkin, I was surprised to see that she was still nodding and smiling.
I drew her neighbor to one side. “Mrs Dodds, how much does she see ”
“Oh, she’s very short-sighted but she’s right vain despite her age. Never would she wear glasses. She’s hard of hearing, too.”
“Well, look,” I said. My heart was still pounding. “I just don’t know what to do. If I tell her about this, the shock will be terrible. Anything could happen.”
Mrs Dodds nodded, stricken-faced. “Yes, you’re right. She’s that attached to the little thing.”

One particular Thanksgiving, the weather was so beautiful that Mom decided to have dinner on our front lawn. Dad built a long table, and Mom and I rounded up every chair in the house. I did the place settings and made the centerpiece — my favorite job of the year.
My aunt arrived with Uncle Gordon. I watched him walk from the street up the lawn, tall with his blond hair shining in the sun. Another car had pulled up behind them, and Uncle Gordon waited for a slim man to join him. As they walked, he and Gordon chatted. Mom came out of the house and greeted my aunt. Then, with a surprised look, she said hello to Gordon and his friend.
“Who’s this ”
Gordon smiled and told us the man’s name. “A Canuck(法裔加拿大人) from Toronto, like me.”
“Oh,” Mom said uncertainly. “Well, welcome. Leslie, get another place setting and a chair.” She turned to the stranger. “Please have a seat. We’re going to eat in about half an hour. ”I thought the man looked a little funny, but he smiled. “Why, thanks. Thanks a lot.” I did as Mom asked and set a place at the table for the stranger. I put him next to Uncle Gordon so the two friends could recall home. And they did a lot of talking.
After dinner, the man approached my mother with a smile. “Thank you for including me in your Thanksgiving dinner, Joyce. It wasn’t something I was expecting.” Mom frowned, a little confused. “Of course,” she said. “We’re glad you could be here. Do you have Thanksgiving in Canada ”
“Ours is in October. We have turkey, though, just like you.” He smiled. “But this is one of the best Thanksgivings I’ve had. I guess Americans and Canadians aren’t that different, eh ” Then again, he said, “But I never expected this.”

Sophie was dressed and all ready for her very first dance recital (舞蹈表演). When she started dance class last year, she didn’t know about the recital. She heard people talk about the recital but she didn’t know what it was. The recital was a chance for all of the parents and grandparents to see the dance students dance. It was at the high school every year and Sophie was going to dance on the stage in front of everyone. She did not like the thought of that. It scared her.
Yesterday she practiced her dance for the first time on the stage. There were only a few moms watching so it wasn’t too bad. But the thought of dancing in front of lots of people to night was really scary.
“All ready to go ” Mom asked.
“Yes. I guess,” Sophie said.
“You don’t sound like you are ready. What’s wrong ”
“I don’t know. I don’t feel so good. I’m kind of afraid.”
Mom sat on the edge of Sophie’s bed. “Remember yesterday when you practiced and I was right in the front row You did just fine!”
“But today there will be so many people!”
“When you go out on the stage, you just look right where I was sitting yesterday. I will be in that same seat. You just look at me and it will be just like yesterday! Let’s go!”
“What about the rest of the family ” she asked. “They are coming in the other car. We have to be there a little early,” her mother replied.
Sophie thought about what her mom said all the way to the high school. Mom was always right, but Sophie wasn’t sure this time. She still hated the thought of dancing in front of all those people. When it was time for her to dance, Sophie thought about what Mom told her. She certainly hoped Mom was right. She felt her mother’s words ringing in her ears. The music began to play.

I grew up and started my school career in Haiti. Teachers in Haiti were well known for certain skills: some for their ability to scare you with just a look, and others for their consistency in beating kids.
Our fear pushed us to learn whatever we’re assigned, whether it was memorizing a passage or solving a math problem, so in a way, the teachers were effective. I was able to remember a lot, and as a kid I never sat back and wondered if the education I was getting was good enough.
But looking back, I see that I never grew mentally in that school. They didn’t teach us to think broadly or be creative. Instead, my classmates and I were taught what we needed to know to survive inside a classroom, but not the things that would help me survive in the real world.
When I came to the United States, I didn’t know what to expect. On my first day of school, I met my new teacher, Mr Jean Pierre, who was Haitian. He greeted me with Creole (克里奥尔语). It meant that we were equals.
On my first day in his class, I couldn’t even read the English title of the textbook he handed me. But I learned so quickly that by my third week, I understood most questions and was even raising my hand.
He also had us learn 10 to 20 vocabulary words each day. For each word we had to memorize how to spell it and pronounce it and create a sentence with it. At first, I hated this method because I wasn’t used to having to be creative in any way. But gradually, he helped me fall in love with creative writing. Every morning, we’d have 30 minutes to write about anything that came to mind. I discovered I was good at this, and he was the first teacher ever to put in time aside from his regular schedule for me, staying during lunch or after school to help me and another student who loved writing.

As a fourteen-year-old girl, you may think that the biggest problem you can probably face is failing one of your classes in high school, but not everything is as easy as it seems. My parents are going through a lot lately. We recently moved from Houston and bought a house in Dallas, and my dad had almost no money left in the bank due to the fact that he had to pay the water and electricity company in order for them to be available in my house.
My brother, who was a nice, happy, free-caring six-year –old boy, just like every other, started to become very distant from us the first week we moved into the house. As much as we tried to ask him what was wrong, he wouldn’t tell us. I was really confused by the way he acted, because he normally was a nice and kind little boy who would often go out and play with the neighbours and would just be outside, enjoying the day. That little boy completely turned around and became a very distant, cold child. He would keep silent and sit in his room the whole day with the door closed. He would not go out even for supper, and we were wondering what happened.
We went to talk to his teacher who said that he was very shy when it came to talking in front of the other kids, but he had developed a little confidence and started to play with the kids in his class. The teacher mentioned that he and a kid from a higher level started ‘‘hanging out” away from the rest of the kids. My mum thought of it as a good thing, thinking it meant that my brother had started to make new friends, but I knew it meant something else. I tried talking to my brother even though he didn’t want to, but he didn’t say anything dealing with the bigger kid.
Paragraph 1:
Until one day, he came home, crying, and it seemed I was the only one who noticed.

Ella walked into the kitchen and twirled. She was wearing a new dress and felt like a famous model. Even better, it was a dress she made! Her very first piece of fashion! “What do you think ” she asked her family. They all gathered at the kitchen table for an early school breakfast. The scent of French Toast hung in the air and made Ella’s stomach grumble.
“Is that the secret dress you’ve been working on ” Mom asked.
“Yes! This is it! Don’t you love it ” Ella twirled again.
“It’s very pretty, Ella. I can’t believe you designed and sewed that all by yourself!”
“I’m so proud of you! How long did that take ” Dad said as he reached across the table for the syrup(糖浆) bottle.
Ella pulled out her chair and sat down. “Two weeks! But I think I could make the next one faster.”
“Nice job, Ella! I can’t believe you can sew like that! You’re only eight years old!” Mom praised.
Ella smiled as she poured some syrup over the pancake on her plate. It was going to be a perfect day.
The kids at school were excited about her dress, and she got some nice comments from some girls, so she was happy about that. The day went by quickly, and before she knew it, she was outside for the last class break of the day. What a perfect day! She thought to herself as she swung on the swings. Ella leaned back in the swing and looked up at the blue sky full of white wispy clouds. She smiled. This would be the first dress of many that she would make. Some day she would have her very own fashion line with all kinds of clothes. She would be famous one day.
The school bell rang and the break was over. All the kids were moving slowly toward the door to go back inside. Ella sat up straight on the swing and waited for it to stop. When the swing was close to stopping, Ella jumped off. When she landed, she heard a loud rip. “Oh no!” she whispered as she moved her hand to the back of her dress. It was ripped(撕破) all the way down the back! Everyone would laugh at her. This was terrible!

A few years ago,we adopted(收养) a lovely dog whom we named Gypsy. We didn’t know her age, background, or how she ended up wandering the streets of a large southern city with no owner. But we felt sure she’d had a difficult life, as she moved back whenever we wanted to touch her. She seemed particularly afraid of strange men. Gradually, Gypsy adapted to her new home with us, and she followed me around everywhere I went silently. Nothing seemed to make her bark (叫),but we thought she was just a quiet dog as she seemed happy with us otherwise.
Not long after we brought her home, I had an operation on my leg. Gypsy seemed to dislike the coming and going of doctors, and visiting nurses-especially the males. She was still silent, but she barked at the ones she liked least. This led us to believe it must have been a male who had mistreated her before.
One day about a year after my operation, I was in the bathroom giving Gypsy a bath. Suddenly,I fell onto the floor. Luckily,I fell between the tub(浴盆) and water pipe. If I had hit one of them, I feel certain that would have been the end of me.
Unfortunately, I had no way to seek for help. The door was closed, and I didn’t have my phone with me. My husband wouldn’t be home from work for hours, so I did the only thing I could think of: I started shouting for help as loudly as I could.

参考答案
1.One possible version:
When the show was over,I walked off the stage to find my grandparents waiting for me. With proud smiles on their faces, they both gave me plenty of praise and encouragement, saying what a wonderful job I had done and what a talented actress I was. However, it was sad to come home to an empty house and know that my parents wouldn’t hear about my play for a little while. After all,it was my parents’ comments and praise that I was looking forward to.
A few days later my mom returned home from the hospital. I joyfully ran to show her the recording of my big second grade play. While watching the play, she couldn’t control her excitement and satisfaction, with her face beaming with joy. She thought I had done an amazing job and praised me for my keeping calm and performing naturally on the stage. Meanwhile, she also pointed out my shortcomings for future improvement. From the experience I realized that my parents were always with me no matter what happened, whether physically or spiritually.

2. The day before vacation finally arrived. Lauel and I usually walked to and from school, but that day I persuaded Mom to pick us up in her car after school in case I really got the tree. Before school was over, Miss O’Keefe announced it was time for the drawing. My heart pounded as Miss O’Keefe put her hand into the box and drew one folded piece of paper out. Then she unfolded the paper, looked at it and announced. “Helen has won the tree” I was beside myself with excitement!
I raced to my mother’s car excitedly when school was out. And I’ll never forget the astonishment on my mother’s face as my sister and I carried the tree to her car. Since Mom had a key to Mrs Mueller’s house, we took the tree straight to her living room and set it up on a table. It looked so beautiful! The next evening we welcomed Mrs Mueller back at her door. She slowly made her way into the house and turned on the lights. Greeted by the sparkling Christmas tree, Mrs Mueller was rooted to the spot, looking surprised. Then a sweet smile appeared on her faceand tears welled up in her eyes. “Thank you so much!” she said softly.

With less than a minute left, the Lady Tigers were near their goal. I saw the coach shout and flash a signal to her teammates. Then something I consider sacred happened on the court. They passed Lauren the ball. She caught it and moved toward the goal. Lauren went in for a layup. Amazingly, the opposing team did not block her. She shot. She scored!
Applause exploded and the thunderous sounds echoed on the court. “Lauren, Lauren, Lauren,” shouted the cheerleaders. Instead of reacting to the noisy crowd, my daughter kept her head in the game. The final buzzer sounded. Verden lost by seventeen points. A few minutes later, Lauren joined us in the stands. “Did you see I scored!” Her brown eyes shone as she wiped sweat from her forehead. “I made a basket!” I wrapped my arms around her and hugged her tight. Lauren was different. My daughter wasn't like everyone else. And I was glad.

I decided to do something for her instead of telling her the truth. Suddenly it occurred to me that I could buy her a new bird in the nearby store. Mrs Dodds also thought it a good idea and even suggested one in the town. I cleared my throat, telling Mrs Tompkin that I was going to take Peter along to the surgery to do the job. I left her still nodding and smiling and, cage in hand, fled into the street. I soon found the shop and luckily there was a green budgie in the shop. With the bird in the cage, I sped back and hung it in its place by the window. “I think you’ll find everything is well now,” I told Mrs Tompkin.
It was a long time before I went to see how Mrs Tompkin got along with the bird I bought for her. “How is the bird ” I said. The old lady led me in and then laughed. “Oh, you mean Peter. He is grand.” In the little room, the cage still hung by the window and Peter, the Second, hopped around the bars of the cage, running up and down his ladder. Mrs Tompkin looked lovingly at him. “You wouldn’t believe it,” she said. “He’s like a different bird, chattering to me all day long. It’s wonderful what cutting a beak can do.” Hearing this, I feel relieved — my efforts did bring her happiness.

He described how hospitable we were when he came in, how he had no time to interrupt when Uncle Gordon dragged him into the talks about Canada, and how excited Mom was to introduce her cooking recipes. “It was such a wonderful gathering that I almost forgot my initial intention.” he continued, embarrassed. 8.Paragraph 1
Through actions like these, Mr. Jean Pierre showed me that he truly cared about me as a person and wasn’t just interested in doing his job and getting paid. He taught us knowledge and answered our questions patiently. When we encountered difficulties, he worked with us to find a way. When we made progress, we shared the joy with him. Mr. Jean Pierre’s methods were just as effective as the ones my scary teachers in Haiti used. In 7th grade, the top ten students in the school were all from our class, all Mr. Jean Pierre’s students. I felt happy.
Paragraph 2
But he was also the kind of teacher who taught us how to survive in life. He took the time to tell us how to conduct ourselves in an office environment and how to stay focused even when everything might seem to be against us. He made me realize that you can impress someone for a little while by dressing fancy, but a smart, educated mind can make a much longer-lasting impression. I know he made a big impression on me. Now I’m always looking for lessons I can take beyond the classroom.

He still kept silent and would not say a word. I asked if the bigger kid had bullied him.
Paragraph 2:
After a while, he gave in and started telling me that the bigger kid had stolen his lunch. I told him everything would be OK. Our parents also felt sad and nervous, but my brother told them not to worry. The next day we went to see the teacher and told him the whole thing. It was Sunday. I had one last patient to see.
I approached her room in a hurry and stood at the doorway. She was an older woman, sitting on the edge of the bed, struggling to put socks on her swollen feet.
I crossed the threshold(门口), spoke quickly to the nurse, and scanned her chart, noting she was in stable condition. I was almost in the clear.
I leaned on the bed rail looking down at her. She asked if I could help put on her socks. I thought I had other priorities on the list. It’s my responsibility to arrange the issue. So instead, I launched into a monologue(独白)that went something like this: “How are you feeling Your sugars and blood pressure were high but they’re better today. The nurse mentioned you’re anxious to see your son who’s visiting you today. It’s nice to have family visit from far away. I bet you really look forward to seeing him.”
She stopped me in a serious, authoritative voice. “Sit down, doctor. This is my story, not your story.”
I was surprised and embarrassed. I sat down. I helped her with the socks. She began to tell me that her only son lived around the corner from her, but she had not seen him in five years. She believed that the stress of this contributed greatly to her health problems. After hearing her story and putting on her socks, I asked if there was any thingelse I could do for her. She shook her head no and smiled. All she wanted me to do was to listen.
And, not long after, in an unexpected twist, I became the patient, with a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis at age 31. Now, 20 years later, I sit all the time --- in a wheelchair. For as long as I could, I continued to see patients from my chair.

A Beautiful Group Painting
The art class was over in a blink of an eye. When the recess bell (下课铃) rang, Lisa sighed. At her old school, she used to play with her friends. Now she sat in the corner of the field and watched the other kids play without her.
As she cleared her table, Lisa noticed a box of chalk by the window. She put it in her pockets. Then she took her usual place at the end of the recess line.
As she and her classmates walked down the hall and out into the yard, Lisa remembered how she and her mother used to draw chalk designs on the long driveway leading to the old apartment. The patterns were called rangoli (印度传统地画), and they looked like stars and roses. Lisa’s mother said that the drawings were to welcome guests to their home. Lisa missed the early mornings she and her mother would spend drawing those colorful patterns.
Lisa walked to the basketball court and sat on the sidewalk. She took chalk out of her pocket and began to draw her favorite rangoli pattern. She drew flowers with huge petals (花瓣) and stars with eight points.
“That’s pretty,” a voice said. She turned around and saw that Eric, a boy in her class, was watching her.
“It’s called rangoli,” she said.
“The floor of my grandmother’s house has patterns like that,” Eric said.
“What do you mean ” Lisa asked. “Hand me a piece of chalk,” Eric said. Eric sat down on the pavement and began to draw. He drew flowers that were more detailed than Lisa’s, but still had huge petals. Then he drew circles inside circles, and surrounded them with small diamonds. Lisa kept drawing too.
“What are you guys doing ” a voice asked. Lisa and Eric had been so absorbed in drawing that they hadn’t noticed that their classmate Emma had been watching them.
“Hey,” Emma said, sitting down beside them, “that looks like the rugs (小地毯) in my uncle’s house. Except on the rugs, the shapes are bigger, and aren’t as curly (卷曲的).”

Only eight days until Thanksgiving and there wasn’t going to be enough money to grocery shop for the holiday. It was hard to put everyday food on the table for three growing teen boys with the little I earned from work. There was only a few small sweet potatoes, one can of green beans, and two chicken breasts.
The next day, I met my friend and neighbor, Aleta, at her home. Her four boys and my kids were good friends. Her husband had recently lost his job due to illness, and financial difficulties hovered (盘旋) over their household as well.
“Hey, I have an idea how we can put together a meal where everyone will have enough. ”I proposed.
“I have a few cans of green beans, about three pounds of chicken legs, and three apples. ”she said.
“Great. Let’s meet at my house at 2:00 in the afternoon. If you have some peanut butter, I have enough flour and ingredients to make cookies. ”
Four days before Thanksgiving, I had finished baking the cookies. My friend called with news about a family living in our community who needed help with food and bills. The father had been in an accident and unable to work for the last few months.
We didn’t know the family well, but my friend and I went to visit them with our holiday cookies, hoping to help in some way. While everyone chatted, I walked into their kitchen to see about the food situation. The cupboards were almost empty. No exaggeration. A single can of soup, and a box of cereal (麦片) sat alone in the cupboard. That’s it. I was shocked.
Aleta and I knew the life during hard times. We left the house, eagerly wanting to help. But what could we do Our own finance sand food situation left nothing to spare.

Messi was a big fan of soccer. When he turned ten, he joined his first soccer team, the Green Lightning. Messi put on his uniform right away, and then he admired himself in the mirror.
“I’m a real soccer player,” he said to himself. He practised his serious game face and his victory smile. “What are you doing ” asked his sister Grace.
“I’m practising soccer,” said Messi.
“Well,” said Grace, “when people practise soccer, they usually use a ball.”
Messi then found a soccer ball in the basement. He hurried back to his room, stood in front of the mirror, and posed with the ball. Just right!
On Wednesday, Messi met his teammates on the playground. Coach Jupiter taught them how to kick the ball, run after it, and kick it again. He taught them how to throw the ball in from the sidelines, using two hands while keeping both feet on the ground.
Then they had a practice game. Soccer was a lot harder than it looked. Every time Messi was about to kick the ball, someone else kicked it away from him. When Messi threw the ball in from the sideline, he forgot to keep both feet on the ground. The only thing that Messi was good at was cheering. When anyone made a goal, Messi would jump up and cheer for them.
Saturday was Messi’s first real soccer game. The Green Lightening was playing against the Golden Suns. Messi’s family all came to watch. Messi chased the ball up and down. He kicked the air. He kicked the grass. He even kicked one of the Golden Suns. But every time he tried to kick the ball, someone else kicked it first. Even so, he kept cheering for anyone who scored. But no one cheered for him. It came as no surprise that their team lost the match.
After the game, Grace came over and reminded Messi that he needed to be a real soccer player not a cheerleader. Meanwhile, his coach Jupiter told Messi that he wanted him to be a better soccer player next time.

Our car ran over the sand and rocks, leaving a cloud of dust. It was a beautiful spring day. The sun was bright and the sky was clear—perfect conditions for off-roading(越野). Back then, in 1984, my wife Sue and I were living in southeastern California. The views were wonderful, but with dangers. The temperatures could rise above 50℃, and it was no place for tourists to go off-roading without enough preparation.
Sue and I always took a bag with us, packed with snacks, water, and a first aid kit. We also had a car specially changed for driving in the desert. With it, we could go anywhere a jeep could go.
That day, we drove about 20 miles into the park. Around midday,we stopped to have a rest. As usual, we could see the desert before us. When the spirit of adventure moved us, we went back into the car. But when I turned the key nothing happened. I tried again and again. Nothing happened. I could see Sue was thinking the same thing—the engine wouldn’t start.
Our car had one strange problem. About once a year, it would refuse to start. If left overnight, the engine would run just fine the next morning. But no one could find anything wrong with our car. Because it happened so rarely, we’d just learned to live with it. But it had never happened suddenly.
“What should we do ” I felt a little anxious. I hadn’t seen a person on our drive out here, and we had no way to call for help.“We could walk back to town,”Sue said. Eager not to waste any more daylight,we quickly packed our things. We were about to set off when Sue called my name.“Look!” she cried. Sure enough, there was something, getting closer.

Yesterday as I flipped through the stack of mostly junk mail that I had fetched from the mailbox, an advertisement for a magazine caught my attention. The cover featured a color photograph of a ball of yarn (纱线) with knitting (编织) needles artistically inserted through the middle. Memories of Mrs. Hudson, my sixth-grade teacher, came to mind. She was tall, with a kind face, and wore little makeup.
Mrs. Hudson taught language arts when I was in sixth grade. Mrs. Hudson also taught knitting lessons in her home to select sixth-grade students every other Saturday from fall through winter. I was a shy girl back then, considered by others as weird.
It took the most pitiful expression I could find to convince my parents to let me take the knitting lessons. It then required pleading and promises of extra chores to get them to agree to drop me off and pick me up every other Saturday. Thankfully, Mrs. Hudson only lived seven miles away, and she offered the knitting lessons for free. She even supplied knitting needles and yarn.
The house was quiet, tidy, and welcoming as Mrs. Hudson guided me to the room, which was already filled with girls looking as shy and nervous as I was. Yet gradually we got to know each other and relaxed. We would grab a snack and drink while everyone arrived and settled for the lesson. I drank iced tea for the first time at one of those Saturday knitting lessons. Trips to Mrs. Hudson’s house were like a treat to me back at that time. I actually made some friends who shared the same hobby.
I don’t recall officially thanking Mrs. Hudson for those Saturdays, and I regretted that. I typed her name and the town where she lived into Google. Within minutes a couple of articles and multiple obituaries (讣告) popped up. There was a recent photograph inserted into one of the obituaries, and as I gazed into those eyes, there was no question that it was Mrs. Hudson. She had passed away only eight years before at the age of 99. I took down the address and decided to pay a visit.
As I stood in front of the door, I gathered my courage and knocked.

My dad, George, only had an eighth grade education. A quiet man, he didn’t understand my world of school activities. From age 14, he worked. And his dad, Albert, took the money my dad earned and used it to pay family expenses.
I didn’t really understand his world either: He was a livestock trucker, and I thought that I would surpass (超过) anything he had accomplished by the time I walked across the stage at high school graduation.
Summers in the mid-70s were spent at home shooting baskets, hitting a baseball, or throwing a football, preparing for my future as a quarterback on a football team. In poor weather, I read about sports or practiced my trombone (长号).
The summer before my eighth grade I was one of a group of boys that a neighboring farmer hired to work in his field. He explained our basic task, the tractor fired up and we were off, riding down the field looking for weeds to spray with chemicals. After a short way, the farmer stopped and pointed at a weed which we missed. Then we began again. This happened over and over, but we soon learned to identify different grasses like cockleburs, lamb’s-quarters, foxtails, and the king of weeds, the pretty purple thistle. It was tiring work, but I looked forward to the pay, even though I wasn’t sure how much it would amount to.
At home, my dad said, “A job’s a big step to growing up. I’m glad you will be contributing to the household.” My dad’s words made me realize that my earnings might not be mine to do with as I wished.
My labors lasted about two weeks, and the farmer said there might be more work, but I wasn’t interested. I decided it was not fair that I had to contribute my money.

On Saturday in the late afternoon, I realized I lost my wallet. I returned to the mall, thinking I must have dropped it in the parking lot, so I retraced my steps to look for it. When I didn’t find it there, I started getting very nervous and went inside to the lost-and-found to see if someone turned it in. One of the security officers spent an hour trying to help me figure out where I could have lost it! We went back to the parking lot and I saw the woman that had parked her car right after mine the first time I was there.
I ran up to her with a smile, thinking maybe she had found my wallet. As I approached her, I saw a smile on her face and then I asked her, “Excuse me, do you remember seeing a wallet near your car as you came to the mall today ” She had a strange look on her face and said, “No, I am sorry but have you seen my keys ” She then told me she thought I was coming to her to give her back her keys that she lost and I thought she was smiling because she found my wallet. Both of us looked at the security guard and were thinking “Now what ”.
He asked both of us to go to his office to fill out some paperwork and as I was thinking about my wallet, I overheard the woman saying her keys had a small white pocket purse attached to them and something ran through my mind.
I had seen her keys! They were downstairs at the valet booth. I remembered seeing them when I was looking for my wallet and the valet man showed me that a white pocket purse with keys attached to it was all that was found that day. I told her that most likely her keys were downstairs and her face just lit up and she gave me an air kiss.

One day in March, I just woke up tired of being fat. I was tired of feeling like my weight defined my whole existence. I wanted to play with my children and to be the kind of mother of whom they could be proud. I convinced my husband that our family could stand to get a little healthier and just like that it began.
I threw myself into discovering better ways to eat. I got all of the sugar and junk food out of the house and replaced them with fresh fruits and vegetables. For the first time in my life, I started to exercise every day. At first it was absolute torture. I kept the phone right by me just in case I had a heart attack on my stationary bike. Amazingly, just like it is supposed to, the weight started to come off.
The change spread through my whole family. My husband, who hadn’t cycled in years, bought a new road bike and soon convinced me to join him. By June, he had signed me up to do a twenty-two-mile charity ride with him.
Later that month, I completed a sixty-eight-mile ride in a little less than five hours. Before the ride, however, besides the cold weather, I wasn’t feeling well and had not eaten properly for such an effort. I told myself I wasn’t about to give up so easily. Ten miles in, I started sucking wind. Fifteen miles and my legs felt like they were made of lead. By twenty miles, my lungs were burning. That’s when I turned around and saw my three children cheering me on in the van behind me. My eight-year-old daughter Emalee shouted “Come on, Mom. We are proud of you.” I knew then that I couldn’t quit. I tell my children all the time that just because something is hard doesn’t mean that you stop doing it.

When Ruth Hagan was 78 years old, she visited her daughter Judy and teenage granddaughter Marcy in California. They headed for their cabin, going forty miles up and down the mountains in their Bronco (野马), winding terrifyingly close to cliffs (悬崖).
After dinner Marcy announced the water tank(水箱) was low and that she would take the Bronco down to the pump and get water. Ruth was nervous about her young granddaughter driving down the narrow dirt road by herself, but Judy reminded her that Marcy had been driving vehicles up there on the ranch(大牧场) roads since she was 12.
“Just be careful, Marcy,” her mother warned. “The cliff side is pretty shaky. Be sure to hug the mountain side.” Fifteen minutes later Judy was still watching when suddenly she screamed. “Oh no! She went over the cliff, Momma! The Bronco and Marcy—they went over! We have to help her! Come on!”
Judy took off running. Ruth ran behind her, but Judy was quickly out of sight. Ruth raced down the steep hill, breathing hard. She ran on and on, down the hill, up the next, trying to catch up with her daughter. It was getting harder and harder to see anything at dusk.
Ruth stopped and looked around. She screamed into the darkness, “Judy, where are you ” Off to her immediate right and down the cliff she heard, “Down here, Mother! Don’t come near the edge! I slipped on loose rocks and fell over. I’m down about twenty feet.”
“Oh, dear God, Judy, what can I do ”
“Just stay back, Momma! I think I can crawl(爬) back up. I saw the white roof of the Bronco when I was falling, Momma, and I heard Marcy calling for help. She’s alive! But she’s way down there in the valley. You have to go back to the cabin and phone for help. Tell them to send a helicopter. We have to get Marcy out!!”
Ruth turned around and started running back the hill she’d just ran awkwardly down. Up the hill, down the next. She had one hill left to climb when she fell on her face. Chest pains took her breath away. She started to sob.

Seema boarded on a tourist train with her 5-year-old daughter. It was her first travel by train. The train was very crowded. Seema grabbed hands of her daughter, fearing that the crowd could pull her daughter away. When the train started to move, a snack vendor (小贩) came through the crowd, holding on to his bag and trying to sell snacks. The vendor seemed very poor, covered in old and broken clothes.
Passing by Seema, that vendor handed out a pack of snacks toward her, saying, “Only 10 cents, madam.” Seema looked at him with disgust, then refused and asked him to move ahead but her daughter said, “Mom, please buy one for me.” The vendor was still standing there. Seema looked at him with anger and said, “Go away.”
The vendor left. Her daughter waved goodbye toward that vendor with her bracelet (手镯) shinning, and he waved back. Seema was very angry because of all the discomfort she had to go through while traveling on a train and now her daughter was sad about not buying that snack.
After some time, the train reached another station. While walking out of the train, the girl saw that vendor sitting by the train door. She said to her mother, “Mother, can we give him some money He seems hungry.” Seema refused, saying, “Ignore him. He is not a good person. These people take away little girls in their bags.”
Seema and her daughter got off the tourist train and walked a bit. Just then they heard a voice calling them. When Seema turned back she saw that vendor was waving his hands toward them and started to walk toward them.
Seema thought of him as a stalker (跟踪狂) and started running with her daughter, ignoring shouts from behind. She was near the exit and saw that vendor was still following them. It was a cold winter Monday morning. Manu an eight-year-old was sleeping comfortably in his bedroom upstairs, at the Khagal house. Mondays are usually very difficult for him after a weekend break from his school. “Manu, wake up! It’s school time!” shouted out Manu’s mother Akhila, from the kitchen. Manu pulled the blanket over him and ignored his mother’s repeated attempts to wake him up. “Manu! It’s already 6 o’clock and your school bus will be here by 7. So please wake up and get ready. Manu continued sleeping.
Finally, after much pestering and pampering (纠缠和纵容), Manu got out of bed and started getting ready for school lazily. The school bus was already honking (按喇叭) in front of his house while Manu was brushing his teeth. Akhila requested the driver to wait for a few minutes. She quickly helped Manu get ready and helped him get to his school bus.
“Phew! Manu didn’t miss his bus today” Akhila sighed. She was really concerned about her son. Manu couldn’t do anything on time, waking up in the morning or any of his daily tasks. Akhila thought to herself “need to work out a plan to teach him a lesson in self-discipline (自律). Repeated advice and warnings haven’t changed him.”
The next day it was the usual scene at the Khagal house except that there was no effort from Akhila to wake up her son. The time was 7. The school bus honked and Akhila, unlike her usual self, asked the bus driver to leave. There was unusual confidence on Akhila’s face. Manu finally woke up at around 9 o’ clock. He ran down to the kitchen and cried out “Mom! Why didn’t you wake me up The school bus has already left and I am really late for school today.” He couldn’t stop crying. “I have a math test today and Mrs. Mangat will punish me if I miss her class and the test.” The calm face of Akhila made Manu feel more anxious.

13.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
“I just couldn’t stop thinking about her.” That’s what a nine-year-old cat lover Sutter Rowse said after he saw a story about a stray cat (流浪猫) in his community of Williams Lake, British Columbia, which was in need of surgery (外科手术). He decided to do something about it and raise funds to help the cat. Now, that cat is much better and has a brand new owner, all thanks to Sutter’s hard work and clever thinking.
Online, Sutter came across a story posted by his local animal shelter. The BC SPCA explained that the cat — which was named Hazel by shelter staff — had been found at the transfer station in Anahim Lake, about fourhours west of Sutter’s home. A transfer station is a place where garbage and other waste are sorted. Shelter staff said Hazel was looking for food there.
They later discovered that the back part of it was injured. The head of her femur (股骨) was broken and died — meaning the death of cells in some part of the body — had set in, so Hazel would need surgery to get better. SPCA staff put out a call to the community to raise funds for it, and that’s when Sutter got to work. Sutter thought up a good idea: making use of the power of cinnamon buns (肉桂面包). He knew if there was anything that could get community members to empty their pockets, it would be this sweet treat: cinnamon buns.
He and his mum, Leslie Rowse, got to workbaking, and his mum posted about Sutter’s efforts on a social media page for his local community. Around 15 dozen (or 180) cinnamon buns later, Sutter had raised $850. His mum dropped off the money at the shelter, and Hazel was able to start her surgeries.
Following Hazel’s surgeries and several days of recovery, Sutter’s mum was ready to share some good news. Sutter’s mum told Sutter that Hazel had a new owner. She asked him to guess who that owner was. “I guessed us! And I was right,” said Sutter.

14.阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Last summer, I went to Los Angeies to visit my cousin, Mike. Mike and I were very close and could share any secret with each other. He was a little naughty sometimes although my uncle -Mike’s dad, was very strict with him.
One day, my uncle had been outside chatting with us while he was smoking a cigarette (香烟). Then my aunt called him into the house. He left his cigarette on the front door steps so he could continue smoking it when he came back out
Mike was curious to see what smoking was really like, so he picked up the cigarette to check it out. He held it between two fingers as if he were an experienced smoker and asked me if I had ever smoked before, “No way,” I said in a loud voice, “Never let my dad know about it, or he’ll beat me up,” he said. I couldn’t believe what he did next. Mike put the cigarette in bis mouth and sucked (吸) in smoke. The next thing you know, he was coughing his head off. He looked like he was about to throw up, but he still reached his hand out toward me to offer me the cigarette “Come on, try it.” he said. “It won’t hurt you. I think smoking is really cool.”
I stood there, having no idea whether I should have a try. Then I remembered this advertisement that I had seen on TV. There was a lady who was an addicted to cigarettes that she had got really sick. But she still couldn’t stop smoking. They had to cut a hole in her throat for her to breathe, and she was still smoking through the hole! It made me feel sick. I did not want my cousin to be like that at all!

I was in my room, unwilling to head to the community theatre with “my brother” Henry. He was just adopted by my parents recently. I was not in the mood for being onstage with him.
“Kristie, come here,” my mom called. Following her voice, I found her outside the bathroom, holding a wet book. She gave the book a shake. “Henry’s book was in the bathtub. Did you put it there ” She glared at me—something she never did before Henry came to our home. I didn’t wet his book on purpose. Tears of hurt clouded my eyes. Worse still, she promised to buy him a new copy. My heart ached. Henry was stealing my mother’s love. He was ruining my life.
Meanwhile, Henry was just nearby, absorbed in working on a complicated rope knot (绳结) as usual. Why did a boy like him do the girly work Far from manly!
Soon, it was time to have to set off for the community theatre. As Henry walked ahead of us to the car, my mom took me aside and said in a low voice, “It’s the first time for Henry to be onstage. Be kind to him, Honey.” I nodded but sighed. Being kind didn’t use to be hard. But after Henry moved in, everything felt different. The theatre used to be a special place for my parents and me. With Henry involved, it didn’t seem so special any more.
Finally, it was our stage time. My heart beat wildly. I forgot my annoyance at Henry for a while. As we kids lined up, ready to act out our short play, I realized how loosely I had tied the drawstring (束带) on my skirt. Sure enough, my skirt began to drop. Laughter from the audience could be heard, and even though I was wearing shorts under my skirt, I could feel my face burst into flames. However, my hands were full. If only someone could help me out!

参考答案:
1.One possible version:
I gradually realize the patients’ stories are a bond between the teller and the listener. Each story is different. Some are detailed; others are vague. Some have a beginning, middle and end. Others wander without a clear conclusion. Some are true; others not. Yet all those things do not really matter. What matters to the storyteller is that the story is heard—without interruption, assumption or judgement. I always reminded myself of the importance of stop-ping, sitting down and truly listening.
When my condition affected my hands, I resigned and began to teach medical students. Now I could view the whole from the perspective of physician and patient. I tell them I believe in the power of listening. I tell them I know first hand that immeasurable healing takes place within me when someone stops, sits down and listens to my story. Listening to someone’s story costs less than expensive diagnostic testing but is key to healing and diagnosis.

They were bigger than the shapes Lisa and Eric had drawn, covering each other to form new shapes. She colored the drawings purple, blue, and white. “Wow!” The art teacher showed up at some point and said, “It’s a nice drawing.” The three students stood up and looked at their masterpiece, their heart swelling with pride.
Having heard the teacher’s praise, many students gathered around. They expressed their views on the drawings freely. Some said it looked like a universe, with many planets and stars. Some said it looked like a coral reef full of tropical fish. Some said it looked like a welcoming home. After listening to the students’ comments, the teacher said, “You are all right. But if you ask me, it is a beautiful group painting!” As soon as the teacher finished speaking, the other students joined in the painting.

6. An old lady, who looked like Mrs. Hudson, opened the door. Learning that I was Mrs. Hudson’s former student, she invited me in, uttering regretfully, “I’m sorry, but my mother passed away 8 years ago.” Hardly had I sat down when I was served some snack and drink. “The same flavor!” I sighed. I couldn’t wait to convey my gratitude to Mrs. Hudson, describing the scene where so many 6th-grade girls sat together, learning knitting from Mrs. Hudson and enjoying each other’s company. The lady then showed me to a room, pointing to something on a long table.
It was amazing that she still kept all the knitting needles and yarn. Everything on the table was similar to what I described. When I looked back to the old lady with mixed feelings, she choked up when she began to talk about her mother. “I couldn’t understand her until I found the knitting classes did make great difference to her students.” What amazed me most was that the old lady, along with her daughter, followed in her mother’s footsteps to offer the knitting lessons for free, influencing more girls. When waving goodbye to her, I found myself planning to follow suit.

7.When I brought my payback home — it was $119 — my dad wanted to talk to me. He told me to wait in the living room for a while. Silence reigned in the room. I sat on the sofa, eyes glued to the money I earned. I kept digging in my mind for words to argue with dad if he announced that the money wasn’t mine. Just then, the door opened and in came my dad. The moment he sat down beside me, I gripped the paycheck more firmly, ready to argue. However, he gently placed his right hand on my shoulder and said, “I know you have grown up a lot through your work …” Then there was a long pause. He withdrew his hand and slowly continued, “You deserve the money and the money is yours now.”
I was surprised that my dad allowed to use the money as I wished. In the blink of an eye, numerous fun activities I could do presented themselves to me. I sprang to my feet and kept jumping, still wild with joy and astonishment. On that day, after calculating my budget, I went to the local store and bought many things I wanted — a new football, a baseball bat and a pair of sneakers and so on. Better yet, the idea of giving back to the farmer and working more popped into my mind. At exactly that moment, I realized why my father let me have the money — it was his expectation for my future, his encouragement and quiet love. And that was something I might never surpass.

By chance I lost my wallet and by chance I was able to help others. Kindness is like a boomerang that always comes back. It turns out that another girl found my wallet and asked the security guard for my number which I had left him in case a miracle could happen. She told me she would meet me the next day to return it. I was so happy and so thankful.
The next day I bought two cards, one for the security guard and the other for the girl. Also, I got her a small teddy bear saying “Thank you” to show my appreciation for the kindness I was shown. When the three of us met at the same parking lot, which once witnessed my disappointment but now was loaded with my happiness, we all smiled sincerely. They being amazed at my thank-you gifts, right at that moment I felt that we were all connected somehow by the magic of kindness—that is, the unconditional willingness to help strangers and the touching circle such kindness creates.

9.The importance of that ride was apparent after only a week. My daughter Emalee wanted to ride in a twelve-mile breast cancer awareness ride. We told her it would not be easy, but we thought that she could do it. That day was cold as well. She was the youngest rider and I was already proud of her for even trying. About four miles into the ride, she started feeling the cold. By six miles, she had tears running down her face. I could feel that she was suffering the same pain just like me in the ride.
It broke my heart to see her suffering from the hard ride. I told her that she didn’t have to finish, and that we were so proud of her. She said she wouldn’t quit. The look on her face as she crossed the finish line was priceless. She threw her arms around me and said, “You didn’t quit, Mommy, so neither did I.” Everything I’d been through was worth it for that one moment when I realized that my daughter wanted to be like me and that was okay!
