Dear Peter,
How is everything going I am very glad to learn that you are coming to China
this winter holiday. Now let me tell you something about how to learn Chinese well
Learning Chinese is just like learning any other foreign language,so you should
not be shy and speak Chinese whenever you can, which is very important. The more
you use Chinese, the better you will learn it. You'd better speak slowly. If others can't
understand you,you can use pictures or body language to help you. I hope these tips
can help you.
Best wishes!
Yours,
Li Hua
One possible version:
At one station, a big man with scars on his face got on the train. He sat down
across from Adam and looked at him coldly. Since the boy was traveling alone for the
first time, he got frightened seeing that man. So he looked away and tried to sleep.
But he couldn’t help thinking about that man, especially the cuts on the man’s face.
He wanted to go and ask the train conductor to change his seat but he feared to tell the
conductor his idea.
Then he remembered his father’s letter. He put his hand in his pocket quietly and
took out the letter. His father had written, “Don’t be afraid, my little brave man. Just
imagine I am here with you on the train, in the neighbouring car.” After reading that
letter, the boy’s face lit up without any fear. He put back the letter in his pocket, and
then put on his headphone. With relaxing music, he soon fell asleep.2022-2023 学年度上学期高一学年

The winter break is just about to end. Soon we will be back at school. It’s with both happiness
and sadness. I look very much forward to seeing my friends and starting practice again, but it also
means I’m officially(正式地) half way through the exchange year. With school starting there are new
things to try out and experience. For example I’m starting a new sport, Track. It’s similar to Cross
Country, which I did from August till November.
Being here for half a year now I can easily tell the differences between my two schools. The
hardest or most different part for me was to have the same schedule every day here. Honestly, I prefer
to have different classes every day, as I did in my home country. However, I have fallen in love with
the Friday football games. Football is one of my favorite sports now. Before I came, I knew nothing
about it. Now I love it, especially to watch it with my host parents. I have also been so lucky to go to
two college football games.
Before I left school in December, I had a couple of tests called Mid-term Test. They all went
pretty smooth, mostly because I didn’t have too many hard classes. My favorite class was English,
and also my hardest. Personally I really liked English, where I could write essays(文章), challenge
writing skills and improve English talking.
Only four days of winter break is left. A part of me wants to be on a break forever, and the other
part expects to get started again, start a new sport and see my friends and classmates.

Have you ever thrown a camel Camels are large and heavy animals, so it would be hard to do so.
But in the French-speaking Democratic Republic of the Congo, “to throw a camel” is a way of saying
“to make a spelling mistake”. In the past, a phrase like that was not accepted by the French
government as an official French term. But recently, the French Ministry of Culture worked on a new
kind of dictionary that accepts the idea that many people in other countries and regions speak the
language. The language has changed over time and is different in places like Ivory Coast in West
Africa or Quebec in Canada, compared to how it is in Paris.
The new online French dictionary includes new French words from around the world. It was
released (发布) on March 18 — just in time for International Francophonie Day on March 20. After
its release, it is updated (更新) on a regular basis. It now contains about 600,000 terms. The French
Culture Minister says the dictionary is not just for France’s 67 million citizens, but for the 300 million
French speakers worldwide.
Supporters say the new dictionary is more democratic ( 大 众 化 的 ) than earlier French
dictionaries that only showed the way highly educated French people spoke. Official dictionaries
produced by the French Academy in Paris were first published hundreds of years ago and are
regularly updated. The online dictionary, however, has a new part you cannot find in a book. If you
live in Senegal, for example, you can search the dictionary, and it will give you the meaning of a word
based on its use in that country.

In the coming decade, space agencies and private space companies like Space X are planning to
build a base on the Moon and Mars. While scientists are already building rockets for the journey, for
long-term human settlements on them, astronauts will need fuel to carry out daily tasks. Many have
suggested hydrogen (氢). But a group of scientists is working on turning CO2 in the atmosphere into
jet fuel. As Mars is rich in CO2 and the lunar surface has a high concentration of CO2, it may be a
feasible solution.
For now the team of scientists at the University of Oxford is focusing on making jet fuel for the
aviation (航空) industry. As the aviation industry releases over 900 million tons of CO2 every year, to
battle climate change, it is necessary to turn the tide. So far aviation scientists have tried to use other
energy resources like electricity to fly. But such flights are limited to short distances. For
long-distance flights, there is no alternative yet.
The concept of turning CO2 into jet fuel is not new. Previously, other similar methods had to rely
on expensive catalysts (催化剂 ) like cobalt to speed up the chemical reaction. But what Oxford
scientists suggest is adding a cheap iron-based catalyst and hydrogen to turn CO2 into liquid fuel. As
the process would not require using fossil fuel, it will make the industry carbon neutral (碳中和的).
The scientists tested the new catalyst in a lab at 300°C and at 10 times the air pressure at sea
level. The entire process took 20 hours and turned 38 percent of CO2 into new chemicals. About 48
高一年级 英语学科 期末试卷 第 4 页 共 10页
percent of the chemicals were jet fuel hydrocarbon and the rest were other by-products that are used in
the production of plastic.
Professor Peter Edwards, a lead scientist in the project, said the new method could be improved
in two to three years to produce jet fuel in large quantities. “This is a really exciting, potentially
revolutionary advance. Our vision is that the world can see that CO2 collected can be used as an
energy carrier to enable sustainable aviation.”
12. Which word can best explain “feasible” underlined in paragraph 1
A. Unique. B. Practical. C. Time-tested. D. Quick.
13. What problem does the aviation industry face
A. It is suffering from a serious fuel shortage.
B. The traditional jet fuel is much too expensive.
C. Climate change partly disturbs long-distance flights.
D. Its alternative energy resources are not powerful enough.
14. What do we know about the Oxford scientists’ method of fuel-making
A. It is green and cost-saving.
B. It is complex and time-consuming.
C. It runs tests in natural environment.
D. It starts with immediate chemical reaction.
15. What’s the purpose of the author
A. To attract people to explore the space.
B. To inform us of a breakthrough in fuel research.
C. To warn us the dangers of climate change.
D. To encourage us to work in the aviation industry.

The oral exam (口试) is a long-held tradition in many schools and subjects. 16 Students must
then answer properly, using materials they have learned in preparation for the exam. Showing
plentiful knowledge of the subject results in passing the exam or an excellent grade.
17 As part of the completion of a program at the undergraduate or graduate levels, students
might need to prove their knowledge and understanding of a subject area. Many science majors finish
Bachelor’s studies with oral exams, or a particular program may require oral and written exams that
高一年级 英语学科 期末试卷 第 5 页 共 10页
show how a student has taken in all the materials learned in a four-year period. Usually study guides
are available for these exams. 18
One valuable tip for students to succeed is to practice before the exam. 19 But by
answering questions classmates or family ask them students can do as many practices as possible. On
the day of the exam, students should dress plainly but respectfully, and in keeping with any dress
requirements.
Students taking these exams should remember how much they have learned, which is hopefully
quite a lot. 20 When waiting outside the test room, taking a deep breath and reminding
themselves that the oral exam is a nice way to show off how much knowledge has been learned from
teachers can help overcome stressful moments. Also, any other relaxation techniques that help can be
used.
A. It raises questions to students in spoken form.
B. Behaving properly can earn students some favor.
C. They may not be able to predict all the questions.
D. Usually, students performing well are experienced.
E. Nervousness can even make the smartest student get stuck.
F. There are many examples in college where oral exams are used.
G. Therefore, prepared students tend not to be surprised by what they’re asked.
