阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A
Since my family were not going to be helpful about my taking a cooking job, I decided I would look for one all by myself and not to tell them about it till I'd got a permanent one.
I had seen an agency advertised in a local paper, so as soon as there was no one about to say “Where are you going?” I rushed out of the house in search of it. I was wildly excited, and as nervous as if I were going on the stage. Finding the place quite easily, I tore up three flights of stairs, and swung breathlessly through a door which said“Enter without knocking, if you please.”
The simple atmosphere of the office calmed me, and I sat down on the edge of a chair. The woman at the desk opposite looked carefully at me. Then she questioned me in a low voice. I answered softly and started to feel helpless. She wondered why I was looking for this sort of job, so I felt I had to give her the idea of a widowed mother struggling against poverty. But I felt more helpless when she told me that it would be difficult to get a job without experience or references. Suddenly, the telephone on her desk rang. While having a mysterious conversation, she kept looking at me. Then I heard her say,“In fact, I've got someone here who might suit.”She wrote down a number, and my spirits rose as she held out the paper to me, saying,“Ring up this lady. She wants a cook immediately. Cook a dinner for ten people tomorrow. Could you manage that, I wonder?”
“Oh, yes,”said I — never having cooked for more than four. Then I rushed out and called the lady — Miss Cathy. I said confidently that I was just what she was looking for.“Are you sure?”she kept saying. Anyway she decided to employ me and offered a permanent position if I carried out the promise of my self praise. I asked her what tomorrow's menu was to be.
“Just a small, simple dinner: lobster cocktail, soup, turbot Mornay, fruit salad and a savory.”In a rather shaken voice I promised to turn up in good time tomorrow and rang off.

The great thing about libraries is that they house all types of books — from mysteries to biographies to dramas — all in one location. The bad thing about libraries is that they house all types of books in one location, and if it's a location you can't get to, you're out of luck.
A few years ago, when the Little Free Libraries movement started, more people of all ages could have access to books. Now, more than 15,000 free book stands can be found around the world, bringing books to unexpected places. But many folks simply can't get
to the places where the books are. Bookmobile buses are a good solution, but they can be costly to operate.
Books on Bikes programs are appearing in areas where there is a strong bike culture, such as Seattle, and a strong need to bring books to the masses, such as San Francisco.
The Seattle Public Library's Books on Bikes program consists of three bike/trailer combos (组合体) that librarians bring to community events. The trailers are even equipped with Wi Fi so that visitors can sign up for a library card and browse (浏览) the library's card catalog on the spot. “Seattle has a really strong bike culture so we wanted to introduce Books on Bikes programs and provide full service of library programs but do it in a way that is flexible,” librarian Jared Mills said.
San Francisco's program called Bibliobicicleta was run in 2013 by librarian Alicia Tapia. Her trailer can hold about 100 books and attracts readers of all ages and income levels. It's an independent, donation based library — like a Little Free Library, but on wheels. When asked why she would set up a free library on a bike, Tapia answers, “Why not Bikes are cool, and can go anywhere.”
4.What do we know about traditional libraries
A.They are not popular among readers.
B.They hold a limited number of books.
C.They are not very convenient to readers.
D.They bring books to people who need them.
5.What is the disadvantage of bookmobile buses
A.They are full of passengers.
B.They are not free of charge.
C.They cost a large amount of money.
D.They bring books to unexpected places.
6.Tapia's answer suggests that she ________.
A.enjoys showing off by bike
B.shows impatience to the readers
C.is eager to make the readers happy
D.thinks libraries on bikes are practical

For foreigners, entering a public toilet in China can be a horrifying experience. In the 1990s, a third of all complaints to tourism officials in Beijing concerned the design, and the bad smell of public toilets.
China has battled smelly toilets for at least 2,000 years. In the Kingdom of Wei (220-226 A.D.), visitors to the palace bathrooms would find boxes to cover their nose and ward_off unpleasant smells. Both flushing (冲水) toilets and toilet paper were invented in China, however, only for the use of the emperor.
Today Chinese scientists have claimed victory in their battle to improve public restrooms, introducing a bacterial spray that can almost get rid of all the bad smell. First, a set of six types of bacteria work to break down the smelly compounds and then a perfume made from orange skin lightly scents (使芳香) the air. The “smell free toilet” study from the Chinese Academy of Science was declared the “ultimate” cure to an_“urgent”_national_issue.
“Five scientists have worked on this from 2011 to the beginning of this year,” said Dr. Yan Zhiying, a bacteriologist with the academy's Chengdu Institute of Biology, adding that they had spent £140,000 on the project.
“Some local government officials here visited a sewage (污水) plant and saw that the treatment technology had come from Japan. They wanted a home grown solution so they asked us to work on it,” he added. “We obtained bacteria from all types of waste from humans, pigs, chicken and ducks, and we tested our compounds one by one,” he said. “The smells coming out of public toilets, or trash cans, are made up of more than 160 different compounds,” he explained, adding that their bacteria spray can change and absorb many of them.
He boasted that the Chinese formula (配方), which costs only around £5 per liter, has no side effects and can be used to remove any bad smell.
7.The underlined words “ward off” in Paragraph 2 can be replaced by ________.
A.keep out B.take out
C.give out D.come out

A Gift of Gold
It was the winter of 1937, just after Christmas. The Depression was still going on, but I was in good spirits.I was going to graduate from elementary_school,_but my mother still dressed me in shorts. Most of my classmates had given up wearing shorts. For the graduation ceremony, all the boys were expected to dress white shirts and dark blue wool pants.
I waited until a week before I told my_mother.On a cold Monday afternoon I went home from school.
“Mom,” I said, “about graduation ...”
“Yes?” she answered.
“They are going to give me the first prize medal,” I said.
Still working over the_stove,_she looked over her shoulder at me and smiled broadly.“That's wonderful,Babe.Dad and I will both be there, and we'll be the proudest in the place.”
She must have seen by the look on my face that something was wrong. She turned her back and said,“ So?”
“So, I have to get long pants,” I said.
“Babe, we don't have the money for new_pants right now,” she said.
“Okay,” I burst out.“Then I won't go to graduation.Plus, I'm running away from home!”
“If I were you, I wouldn't pack my bags. We'll solve the pants problem somehow,” she said.
The following Saturday, when my mother said,“Let's go shopping,” I knew that she had solved the problem. Then we left home.We took_the_trolley and got off at Southern Boulevard, the best shopping street. Our clothing store was just a couple of blocks away.
But first we walked a short way down the Boulevard and stopped at a place I had never noticed before.
“Wait here,” she said. Then she opened the door with the hand with a gold_wedding_ring on her ring_finger and entered a storefront that looked like a bank.
She went out about ten minutes later with a purse in her left_hand,_and then we went to the pants store. I chose a pair of pants. After a patient bargain with the_seller,_my mother bought it at the price of three dollars and fifty cents and handed it to me.

37.difficulty 句型sb. has/have difficulty (in) doing sth.意思是“某人做某事有困难”。
38.which “on which were only five questions”是“介词+关系代词”引导的定语从句, which指代papers。

参考范文:
Paragraph 1:
I was holding the pants tightly under my arm when my mother went to pay the money. I saw her take a tiny brown envelope from her purse, tear back the sealed flap and remove the contents. There were four brand new one dollar bills inside. She carefully unfolded them and handed them to the_seller.The seller gave my mother the fifty cents' change. How did she manage to get such a large sum of money?Maybe my parents found new jobs with higher salary.
Paragraph 2:
We took the trolley back home.Sitting next to my mother on the_trolley,_I had the window seat and looked out for most of the ride.I even imagined Father had come home early and prepared a wonderful meal.About halfway home, I shifted around in my seat to face forward.I glanced down at my mother's hands folded across her purse, which was resting on her lap. It was then that I saw the gold_wedding_ring that had always circled the ring_finger on her left_hand was no longer there.
