The origins of the Christmas traditions are the most fascinating of any holiday. All our favorite activities can be traced (追溯) back to specific points in history, and knowing how these things came about just makes celebrating Christmas much more wonderful.
The original Nicholas was born in 280 AD in the small country of Lycia, which is now part of modern Turkey. Nicholas became first a priest (牧师) and then a bishop (主教) in the early Christian church. The first paintings of him show Nicholas wearing the clothes of a Christian bishop — red decorated with white. When we see Santa's suit today, we're still seeing the two kinds of colors.
Nicholas became famous for gift giving. In the early fourth century, a legend began to spread about Nicholas coming at night to the home of three poor girls who did not have money and therefore could not get married. While the girls slept, Nicholas left gold coins in their stockings, which were drying by the fire. That's how the tradition of Santa filling stockings got its start.
In 1841, Santa first appeared at a department store in Philadelphia. This Santa tried to climb down a chimney to impress the children who were watching, but he got stuck halfway down. In 1890, department store Santas began appearing all over America, especially on the East Coast around Boston. Parents in other countries joined together and hired passenger trains to take their families to see these Santas.
At the same time, Ralph E. Morris of the New England Telephone Company suggested that strings of lights be hung on Christmas trees. After all, lights would be much safer than candles. Our modern day image of Santa as a fat man is based on ads of the Coca Cola company in the 1930s. Artist Hans Sundblom used a retired salesman named Les Prentice as his model.

Thomas James Hanson will remember for a long time the snowstorm that hit the state of New York on November 22. The 47 year old man from Niagara Falls was stuck in his car on the highway for almost eight days after his vehicle was accidentally pushed to the side of the road and covered with snow by workers employed to remove the snow from the streets.
Driving on the Interstate Highway 190 during the worst of the snowstorm, Mr. Hanson decided to pull over his old 1993 Volkswagen Passat to the side of the road and wait for the weather conditions to improve. He remained motionless for approximately five hours before a snow plow arrived to clear the way. Unfortunately for the poor man, the driver of the gigantic snow removal vehicle did not see the small car, pushing it into the ditch and covering it with more than 2 meters of snow.
Fortunately for the father of two children, the snow that was stacked over his vehicle was not very dense and allowed for enough fresh air to get through to enable him to survive. He was able to drink water that he obtained by melting snow with his lighter in an aluminum coffee cup, and he ate the few items of groceries he had bought before going home.
“If I had known I would be stuck for eight days, I would have bought more than a jar of dill pickles (咸菜), a bottle of ketchup and two sticks of beef jerky (牛肉干),” said the survivor with a smile.
Thomas Hanson had almost lost all hope of being rescued when his car was hit once again this morning by another snow plow, which revealed the poor man's location.

In 1959, when Jean Harper was in the third grade, her teacher gave the class an assignment to write a report on what they wanted to be when they grew up. She poured her heart into her report and expressed her dream of becoming an airline pilot. Her paper came back with an “F” on it. The teacher told her it was a “fairy tale”. Jean was heartbroken and ashamed. As the years went by, Jean was beaten down by the discouragement and negativity she encountered whenever she talked about her dream. “Girls can't become airline pilots; never have, never will. You're crazy. That's impossible.” Finally Jean gave up.
In her senior year of high school, her English teacher was Mrs. Dorothy Slaton, a demanding teacher with high standards. One day Mrs. Slaton asked this question: “If you had unlimited finances, unlimited access to the finest schools, unlimited talents and abilities, what would you do?” Jean felt a rush of the old enthusiasm, and with excitement she wrote down the very old dream.
The next thing that Mrs. Slaton said changed the course of Jean's life. The teacher leaned forward over her desk and said, “I have a little secret for you. You do have unlimited abilities and talents. When you leave school, if you don't go for your dreams, no one will do it for you. You can have what you want if you want it enough.”
The hurt and fear of years of discouragement disappeared all of a sudden. Jean felt thrilled and told her about her dream of becoming a pilot. Mrs. Slaton slapped the desk top. “Then do it!” she said.
So Jean did. It didn't happen overnight. In her 10 years of hard work, even facing varieties of laugh, frustration and opposition, she never gave up her dream. Instead, she went on doing everything her third grade teacher regarded as fairy tale.
Eventually, Jean Harper became a Boeing 737 captain for the United Airline Company.

I expected my university experience to prepare me for adulthood, but in reality, it prepared me only for a job. So after I graduated from university, I decided to travel.
Starting in 2017, my first stop was Dubai. Not long after I arrived, I saw men from Pakistan and India in blue overalls working tirelessly in the terrible heat. Unlike me, they were not in a foreign country on holiday. A cab driver told me that most were working for minimal pay and living in substandard conditions. Much of the money they earned was sent home to their families. How did he know He had a wife and a child back home in his native India. He hadn't seen them for a year.
The lesson hit me hard: If you have the means to travel, as I do, you're fortunate. And you don't need material possessions to be happy.
Lessons would come in all shapes and forms.
In May 2017, I found myself in Moscow with a friend. We tried asking a man who worked at the hotel for milk, but he didn't speak English and we didn't speak Russian. So we used hand gestures along with a smile to express our request. He came back with an entire big carton (硬纸盒) of milk; we attempted to explain we couldn't possibly use it all, but he insisted. That was a significant moment for me. I thought one of my favourite aspects of travelling was knowing that a smile went a long way.
During my trip, I came across all kinds of people who'd arranged their lives around travelling. Meeting new people and learning practical skills while travelling is more of an accomplishment than earning a good grade in school. Travelling is just a regular kind of self discovery journey. Because of that trip, I never want to stop exploring.

A
When going through major life changes, like changing careers, I would change the people with whom I spent the most time. We've all gone through periods when the people in our lives have changed — graduation, moving to a new city, getting a new job, joining a new club, etc. I don't think I need to convince you just how much influence other people can have over your identity. If you've ever experienced a major switch in your people environment, then you know that you changes as well.
Most people don't make these choices consciously (意识到地) though. You might consciously decide to spend more time with a certain friend, or you may ask someone out on a date to begin a new relationship. But few people choose their existing friendships deliberately.
There's_no_“getting_rid_of_people”. People are always dropping into and out of each other's lives. Associations grow into friendships, and friendships fade into associations. You don't get rid of anyone. The truth is that in order to make room for new people and new experiences, you may need to loosen up some of your existing connections.
What about loyalty (忠诚) Shouldn't you always be loyal to your friends Once you have a close friend, even if their influence on you is slightly harmful, shouldn't you stick by them
Loyalty to a friend sometimes means having to let go. It means being loyal to their highest and best as well. If someone is destroying his health by smoking, for example, you aren't showing loyalty by smoking right along with him. True loyalty sometimes requires that you break damaging connections, get yourself back on solid ground, and then decide what you can really do to help your friend.
It can take a lot of courage to tell someone, “I'm sorry, but I can't have you in my life anymore.” But even though this might seem like a selfish act at times, it's often the best thing for the other person too. If a relationship is holding you back in some way, understand that it's also hurting the other person. For example, if you work for a violent boss, your acceptance of that situation is considered to be silent approval, encouraging your boss to continue to behave violently.

In 1947 a group of famous people from the art world headed by an Austrian conductor decided to hold an international festival of music, dance and theatre in Edinburgh. The idea was to reunite Europe after the Second World War.
It quickly attracted famous names such as Alec Guinness, Richard Burton, Dame Margot Fonteyn and Marlene Dietrich as well as the big symphony orchestras (交响乐团). It becomes a fixed event every August and now attracts 400,000 people yearly.
At the same time, the “Fringe” appeared as a challenge to the official festival.Eight theatre groups turned up uninvited in 1947, in the belief that everyone should have the right to perform, and they did so in a public house disused for years.
Soon, groups of students firstly from Edinburgh University, and later from the universities of Oxford and Cambridge, Durham and Birmingham were making the journey to the Scottish capital each summer to perform theatre by little known writers of plays in small church halls to the people of Edinburgh.
Today the “Fringe”, once less recognized, has far outgrown the festival with around 1,500 performances of theatre, music and dance on every one of the 21 days it lasts. And yet as early as 1959, with only 19 theatre groups performing, some said it was getting too big.
A paid administrator (行政人员) was first employed only in 1971, and today there are eight administrators working all year round and the number rises to 150 during August itself. In 2004 there were 200 places housing 1,695 shows by over 600 different groups from 50 different countries.More than 1.25 million tickets were sold.

The earth provides us with almost everything that we need to eat, sleep, work and entertain. To do all this, we use the earth's resources. Because some of us have more buying power, they end up using more resources than they usually need. At the same time, we also create a great deal of waste and pollution. So we also need to think about how much land we use to deal with that waste. Then two things happen: first, large numbers of the world's population get much less resources than they need to live; second, the earth is damaged.
The amounts of resources we consumed are like footprints. They show whose lifestyles are a burden on the earth and whose lifestyles are not. Because a few people eat up most of the earth's resources, the majority have to bear the consequences — like pollution. This is the ecological footprints that the earth keeps in its memory.
Some years ago, a famous expert, called William Rees, developed this idea of the ecological footprints. Today, this idea has become like a magnifying glass (放大镜). It allows us to see whether we are living lives in a way that keeps the earth in a reasonably good shape. Once the earth goes out of shape, there is no hope for human beings.
Countries like the United States and Canada have big ecological footprints. Rees calculated that the average amount of energy and materials consumed by a Canadian is what a land of 4.3 hectares can produce. India has a footprint of 0.4. This means that the energy and materials consumed by an Indian is what 0.4 hectares of land can produce. But if we look more carefully, we will find that even within India, the footprints of the city Indian are much larger than the rural Indian.
