Ⅰ.阅读理解
Andrea Cammelleri woke up, looked out the front window of her house in West Jefferson, Ohio, and panicked. Her Ford Ranger, which had been parked on the street the night before, was gone.
She called 911, but was told, “It was held for overtime parking.”Cammelleri was confused. There weren't any “No Parking” signs posted along the roadside. Her truck was licensed and drivable.Plus, she'd been parking it on the street nearly every day and night since she'd moved into her home two and a half years earlier.
Later, when a police officer sent the ticket, she found she'd been fined D|S120 for breaking a village parking law.She looked it up online. It said that it was illegal to park“any motor vehicle camper, trailer, and/or non motorized vehicle” on a street for more than 24 hours. She didn't believe that the law applied to her vehicle.“My truck wasn't a ‘motor vehicle camper’,” she says.
She went to the city office to point out the grammatical error, expecting the mayor to “give up the ticket”.That didn't happen, so she officially fought the law.The village argued that the law did apply, despite the missing comma (逗号) between the phrase “motor vehicle” and the word “camper”.The court agreed, ruling that she had to pay the fine.
She didn't give up.On June 22, 2015, the three judges in higher court generally supported her, which is called“a victory for punctuation”.“According to grammar rules, items in a series are separated by commas,”judge Robert Hendrickson wrote.“Reading ‘motor vehicle camper’ as one item does not produce an absurd result. If the village desires a different reading, it should put a comma between the phrase ‘motor vehicle’ and ‘camper’.”In the end, the village took his advice.
1.What happened to Cammelleri's truck
A.It was parked at a wrong place.
B.It broke down on the street.
C.It was stolen by a thief at night.
D.It was taken away by the police.
2.Why did Cammelleri think the law didn't apply to her truck
A.She had her license to drive her truck.
B.She lived there for two and a half years.
C.She found a grammar mistake in the law.
D.She didn't leave her truck there for a long time.
3.We can infer that Cammelleri________.
A.failed in her first case
B.won the support of the mayor
C.was fined for refusing the ticket
D.made the court admit the grammar mistake
4.What is the main idea of the text
A.A comma makes a woman avoid a parking ticket.
B.A woman refuses to pay a fine for parking wrongly.
C.A parking ticket leads to a change of grammar rules.
D.A court judgment shows the importance of grammar.
Ⅱ.阅读七选五
Although most games have winners and losers, the goal of sports is not to win every game. The real goals include getting exercise, having fun, and learning important social skills, like sportsmanship.
Good sportsmanship is all about respect. Good sports (具有运动家品格的人) respect the other players on their team. They respect the players on opposing teams. They respect coaches, and they also respect the referees or other officials involved in their games. __1__ They yell at their teammates and they talk back to coaches or referees.
Kids usually learn sportsmanship — good and bad — from the adults in their lives. __2__ If parents and coaches show disrespect to other fans, referees, or each other, kids will likely act the same way on the field.
__3__ Some of them are very basic and easy to do, like shaking hands with other players before a game. Other examples may take a little more courage, such as acknowledging a great play made by the opposing team.
Learning good sportsmanship is important because it helps you develop an attitude of graciousness (礼貌) and respect that will carry over into all the other areas of your life! __4__ Being a good sport in the classroom will eventually lead to being a good sport in the workplace.
So be a good sport in whatever you do! __5__ When others see you acting in a way that makes it clear that winning isn't the most important thing, you can move on to focusing on the important things, like having fun, getting exercise, and improving your skills.
A.Good sportsmanship can be shown in many ways.
B.On the contrary, bad sportsmanship is all about disrespect.
C.The example you set can be a powerful teaching tool for others.
D.Players' parents and coaches set examples that kids tend to follow.
E.We can be good sports by encouraging others but not laughing at them.
F.Starting as a good sport earlier will help you be a good sport as you get old.
