The Mid-Autumn Festival
The Mid-Autumn Festival is celebrated on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month every year. It always falls in September or early October. In China, families get together and have a big dinner on this day.
Food is always important in Chinese celebrations. Some food has special meanings, like the pumpkin. It is thought to bring health, so the dinner often includes a pumpkin dish. The moon cake is the most important food at the Mid-Autumn Festival. It’s round like a full moon. The moon cake is as important as turkey at Thanksgiving.
Duck is another popular(受喜爱的,受欢迎的) dish. People in different areas(地区) cook it in different ways.
In addition, the hairy crab(大闸蟹) is a special delicacy(美味,佳肴) for the festival, a highlight(最精彩的部分) of the reunion dinner.
After dinner, families have a great time moon-watching, lighting up lanterns, and eating moon cakes! Legend(传说) has it that if you look closely, you can see the images(形象) of Chang’e and the Jade Rabbit on the Moon. Many kids light the lanterns and walk around the neighbourhood. It is exciting to see the streets aglow(发光的) with lanterns bobbing at night.
