Section B 2a-2c
Teaching methods:
1. Fast reading to find out the general information about the passage.
2. Careful reading to help the students to go through the whole passage, and finish the tasks based on the passage.
3. Individual and group work to make every student work in class.
Teaching aims:
Knowledge aims: Enable students to memorize the following words and phrases: kill, ivory, Thailand, cut down, be in great danger, etc.
Ability aims: Learn to grasp basic reading skills, and learn to find key words and topic sentences.
Emotional aims: Let students know more information about animals;enable them to learn to deal with the relationships between man and animals, and learn to protect animals; strengthen their awareness of cooperation.
Teaching important and difficult points:
To know the information of the animals around the world so as to broaden their eyes by reading the passage;
To improve students’ reading abilities by learning reading skills.
Teaching procedures:
Step Ⅰ.Lead-in
Greet the students as usual.
Step Ⅱ.Presentation
1. Invite students to enjoy a video about our beautiful earth ,and ask them to tell us what they can see in it.
2. T: We can see many beautiful things in the earth. But today, many kinds of animals are in great danger. Show another video. Ask what kinds of animals are in great danger and why Students answer the questions, meanwhile, teach the new words and expressions :(be) in great danger, kill, ivory, save, etc.
Show a picture of me, and says I’m a member of APC (Animal Protection Club).And invite students to join the club. But they need to pass the four gates by reading the passage on P29.
Show the rules to the students.
Step Ⅲ. Reading
Fast reading:
Ask students to pass Gate 1 and Gate 2, divide students into four groups, each member of the groups who answers the questions right can get a card, the more cards they get, then two groups can be our members.
1. T: Now, read the passage quickly and find the best title.
Students read the passage quickly and try to find the answer. Check the answers.
2. T: Now read the passage again and find the TOPIC SENTENCES.
Students read the passage again and find the topic sentences. Check the answers.
Careful reading:
Ask students to pass Gate 3 and Gate 4.
1. Tell the students to look at the four sentences on their paper and find TRUE or FALSE. Ask students to answer the questions and check.
2. Students look at the mind map in 2c. There are four boxes around the word "Elephant". The first box is about the importance of the elephants in Thailand. The second box is about the abilities of the elephants. The third box is about the facts and figures of the elephants. The last box is about how to save the elephants. Students read the article and fill in the blanks in the map.
4. Check the answers.
Let students count the cards they get, and check which two groups will be APC members, then congratulate them.
Step Ⅳ. Writing
Teacher offers four kinds of animals which we are familiar with. Each group chooses one kind to write, they may discuss with their group members.
When they finish writing, ask the captain of each group to read, and then stick the paper on the blackboard.
Step Ⅴ.Summary
1. Review the reading skills.
2. Ask students what we can learn in this class.
