Ask a Pigeon!
How much do you know about pigeons Well, I am a pigeon. So what do you want to know
Q: Why does every city in the world have pigeons
A: Humans have themselves to thank! City pigeons are descended from rock doves. Long ago, wild rock pigeons lived on rocky cliffs. During the day we eat seeds and berries.
Around 5,000 years ago, humans started building cities and growing grain. Pigeons liked towns—there was lots of dropped grain to eat, and there were not many hawks. City people built houses for pigeons to live in too. They kept pigeons to carry messages, or just as pets. We became homing pigeons. Humans took their pigeons with them all over the world. So now we’re everywhere. Modern city pigeons are feral—animals that once were kept by humans, but now run wild. Tall city buildings are a lot like our old cliffs. ▲
Q:How fast can a pigeon fly
A: We can go as fast as a car on the highway, around 97 km an hour. And we can keep up that speed for a long time! The fastest racing pigeon can fly at the speed of about 148 km per hour.
Q: What’s a pigeon’s most amazing skill
A: We use our beaks like straws to suck up water! No other bird can do that.

Long-Distance Travellers
Birds are amazing animals, and their most amazing skill is their sense of direction. Some migrate long distances. They know exactly where to fly, without a compass!
Migrating birds often fly thousands of kilometres. They find their way back to the same place year after year. Even young birds that have not migrated before seem to know which way to go.
In Europe, you may see big groups of swallows sitting on telephone wires. As the weather gets colder in autumn, they get ready to fly away to warmer countries. These birds fly south to Africa for the winter. They will return north to Europe to breed next summer.
Birds have many ways to prepare for their migration journey. The little sedge warbler(水蒲苇莺) doubles its weight by eating lots of insects just before it leaves Europe. It flies 9,000 kilometres. It travels without stopping for four days to spend winter in South Africa.
Bar-headed geese(斑头雁) breed in Tibet(西藏). They then fly over the Himalayas(喜马拉雅山) to India. They have to fly at a height of over 6,000 metres to get over the huge mountains. Other birds, such as cranes, also fly high over mountains.

Why Are Flamingos Pink
Flamingos are tall, mostly pink birds with long legs. But they aren’t actually born pink. They are grey or white, and turn pink over the first couple of years of their lives.
Have you ever heard the expression “you are what you eat” Well, flamingos are just that. In the wild, flamingos feed on shrimp, small clams, fish, insects, and algae. Yum! These foods, especially the algae, are rich in carotenoids(类胡萝卜素). Inside a flamingo’s body, carotenoids are changed into a red-orange pigment(色素)that turns its feathers pink.
Before scientists understood that flamingos got their colour from their food, zookeepers puzzled over why the pink birds turned white in zoos. Now they feed flamingos a diet rich in carotenoids and vitamins to keep their birds “in the pink”.
Still, flamingos fade when caring for their young. Unlike their chicks, mama and papa birds don’t eat much. This decreases the pigment stored in their feathers, so they lose colour.
If a flamingo eats blueberries, will it turn blue Dr. Kevin McGraw, who studies feather colour in birds at Arizona State University, guesses if a flamingo eats enough blueberries, it would probably still turn pink, not blue! That’s because the pigments that make blueberries blue, are changed into colourless chemicals in the bird’s body. But blueberries also contain a small number of carotenoids. So they would probably lightly colour the feathers pink.
