Sue and Jim were neighbours for five years but they were never interested in each other. Then one day, Sue saw Jim’s music collection. She noticed a rare punk rock CD that she also owned. At that moment, she realized that they both had the same interest in music and they started talking. Sue said, “I thought we had nothing in common (相同) until I saw his CD by the New York Dolls.” They are now married and living with each other.
Some psychologists (心理学家) think that your taste in music is related to (有联系的) your personality. As part of a test at the University of Texas, Austin, USA, volunteers created a CD of their favourite songs. The volunteers then listened to each other’s CDs and made guesses about the CD creator’s personality—outgoing, adventurous, happy, and so on. These strangers correctly guessed much more about each others’ personalities through their CDs than through their clothes or taste in films. For example, Sue and Jim love punk music, which means they have outgoing personalities.
The psychologists who did the test found Snoop Dogg (hip-hop) fans are likely to be energetic and talkative. People who like U2 (rock/pop music) are generally independent and adventurous.
The psychologists also found that Louis Armstrong (jazz) fans tend to (倾向于) be serious and intelligent. While fans of classical music are also likely to enjoy jazz music and tend to be shy. The psychologists were surprised to find that rap and heavy metal fans were also shier and quieter than many other music lovers.

Michael Morpurgo was born on 5th October, 1943 in the south of England. He and his brother were moved from London when the Second World War began. Michael went to two different boarding schools when he was growing up. He particularly enjoyed playing rugby and singing but he often felt homesick and missed home. After school, Michael joined the army but he did not enjoy being shouted at and so he left shortly afterwards. Michael then decided to go to university instead.
After graduating from university, Michael became a primary school teacher and taught in a small school in Kent. He loved teaching and his favourite thing to do was to read stories to his class. When he ran out of stories to read to them, Morpurgo started to write his own. His first book was written in 1974 and was called “It Never Rains: Five Stories”. Morpurgo has stated that the days he spent teaching are some of the happiest of his life.
Michael left teaching after ten years and bought a farm with his wife. Together they began a charity called Farms for City Children. This charity offers children who live in poorer, inner-cities the chance to come and stay on a working farm for a week. Children learn from hands-on experience about how to care for animals and how to work with others as part of a team. The charity is still running today, and thousands of children have been to stay at one of the three farms that the charity now owns.
Michael Morpurgo has written more than 100 books for children. He writes about children and their relationships with older people and animals. He also writes stories about wars. It’s a known fact that people who laugh heartily every day are more able to deal with the daily challenges. They’re better able to fight against illness such as cold. As a result, it’s important to spread laughter. For this, firstly you need to find positive (乐观的) people and stick with them. If you are around people who are happy, you’ll become happy. After all, happiness spreads like wild fire. Avoid people who are negative (悲观的) and look on life in a negative way. These people are natural spirit killers.
Forgiveness is also one of the best ways to spread joy and laughter. When you forgive someone, your heart becomes light and you can begin to see the happiness and love that is all around you. You can hear the birds and smell the flowers. You will begin to feel everything good about life.
Make an effort to find the things and the people that are positive around you. Because life at times is full of many disappointments (失望), many people naturally develop a negative attitude(态度) towards life and people. Search for organizations that spread joy, visit places that make you laugh.
Spreading laughter is not as difficult as you think. A kind word, a smile on your face, or a visit to someone who feels lonely is of great help to spread laughter. A kind, soft word gets rid of (消除) anger but unkind words increase anger.
Last but not least, don’t always think of yourself but of others. Before you say something, think carefully about how the person will respond (反应) to your statement. You don’t want to create a case where you are adding to the problem. Laughter comes naturally for many people, but for some people it takes a lot of effort. If you have to be around those who do not laugh easily, take notice of them. See what they respond to and try your best to make them feel better. If they allow it, play with them to get them in the mood for a bit of laughter. Laughter is one of the greatest gifts that mankind has, so make use of it.

Rivers are the lifeblood of human civilizations. As one of the longest-lasting civilizations, China has a large number of rivers. A total of 45,203 rivers with a drainage area (流域面积) of more than 50 square kilometers run across the country, according to the National Bureau of Statistics.
The most famous ones are the Yangtze and Yellow Rivers. As the longest river in Asia and third longest in the world, the Yangtze River has a length of 6,300 kilometers. It originates from the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (高原) and flows through 11 provincial-level administrative regions (省级行政区) before ending in the East China Sea. Second to the Yangtze River is the Yellow River, with a length of 5,464 kilometers as it flows from the west to the east of China.
Apart from its big number of natural rivers, China also has a lot of beautiful man-made rivers. The Grand Canal is one example. With a history of more than 2,500 years, the Grand Canal stretches (延伸) nearly 3,200 kilometers and connects the north and south of China.
Despite their different features, these rivers and canals continue to nourish (滋养) the Chinese people physically and culturally. They bring fertile (肥沃的) soil and enough irrigation (灌溉) water, which makes many areas “a land of fish and rice”. Connecting China as a whole, the water network runs through geographical boundaries (界限) and provides people with convenient transportation, expanding trade and promoting economic growth. These rivers are immortalized (使名垂千古) in Chinese culture, as can be found in Chinese poetry, art, literature, and folklore.
Just as Chinese President Xi Jinping said, “Lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets (绿水青山就是金山银山).”
To protect these bodies of water, many measures have been taken in recent years. For example, in August the Ministry of Water Resources announced plans to bring back 700,000 hectares (公顷) of degraded natural forest and treat almost 1.4 million hectares of land suffering from desertification (沙漠化) by 2025.
Through these government measures, our rivers have seen many positive changes—birds flying above the wetlands and farmers happily harvesting on irrigated lands.

The late president of South Africa, Nelson Mandela. once said, “If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to a man in his own language, that goes to his heart.”
Mandela understood that our mother language is a very intimate (亲近的) thing to us. For people who speak an ancient tongue as their mother language, it helps them keep their traditions. Their language is their main connection with their ancestors. And it is also how they imagine the future.
So it’s a serious thing that a language disappears. Over the last century, more than 400 languages have died out. Some languages are now spoken only by a few dozen people, like Yagan in Chile. Africa and South Africa are also places where many languages are dying.
Why are we humans speaking fewer languages than we once did The answer has to do with globalization. With greater trade and communication, the planet has become smaller. It’s become more useful to speak some languages—English is the obvious example—than others. The effect has been to kill certain languages, usually ones spoken by less populous and powerful peoples.
But there are people and organizations all over the world that aren’t prepared to accept a planet with fewer and fewer languages. Through efforts both large and small, they are getting people to speak and read in certain languages, and to pass them on. Each year on Feb 21,The United Nations also holds International Mother Language Day in the hope that the public pay more attention to dying languages.
This work is important. As US writer Rita Mae Brown wrote, “Language is the road map of a culture. It tells where its people come from and where they are going”.
Mother tongue: a path to the ___1___& the road map of a culture
Presentation of the problem The ___2___ of mother tongue It ___3___ people not only to their traditions and ancestors but also to the outlook for the future.
How ___4___ the problem is With ___5___ 400 languages having died out, some languages are left to be ___6___ by fewer and fewer people.
___7___ of the problem Globalization makes it ___8___ useful to speak languages of less influence.
___9___ to solve the problem Some people and organizations are working to pass on certain languages spoken by less populous and powerful people; The UN has set Feb 21st as International Mother Language Day to ____10____ people’s attention to dying languages.

Raden is a librarian in Indonesia. She has a project—lending books to children in exchange for litter they collect.
Raden likes her job. Each weekday, Raden rides her three-wheeler with books stacked up(堆放)at the back to the village. There, many children are waiting to exchange books with plastic cups, bags and other waste. When she arrives, the children gather around her three-wheeler, the “Litter Library”, and the books fly out quickly.
Raden collects about 100kg of waste each week, which is then divided by her workmates for recycling or sold. She has a stock of 6,000 books to lend and plans to take the mobile service to the other areas as well.
Raden’s project is a new way to make the kids read more. She is happy that the kids are going to spend more time on books than online games as a result. She thinks that it can help build a culture of reading from young age to reduce the harm of the online world.
The project is also a way to clean up the environment. It can help to take care of the waste to fight climate change and to make the earth safe. Kevin is a reader of the “Litter Library”. He’s 11 years old. He often looks for waste lying in the village. “When there is too much litter, our environment will become dirty and it’s not healthy. Homestays are becoming more and more popular, and people around the world are offering their homes as hotels. Homestays offer cheap places to stay, and the chance for guests to see the area like a local. They are very popular with people who want to stay in another country to study or on holiday. We asked three families who run homestays to tell us about where they live.
The Atal family
Our family home is in a small village in the east of Pakistan, in the Himalayan mountains. The village is quite small and very quiet. The mountains are extremely beautiful. You can go for a long walk and swim in the rivers but there are no shops, cinemas or cafes.
Kate and Julian Foxton
Our two-bed house is by the sea in the south-west of England. It is about five minutes’ drive to the nearest village of Portreath. There are lots of beaches, rivers and forests and it is very quiet. We spend a lot of time reading books, watching films and going for walks. Our area is great for sports, such as surfing, kayaking and mountain biking. However, the houses here are expensive, which can be a problem for local people. There are no buses or trains here, so it can be difficult to get around without a car.
Chafic and Aline Halwany
Our home is near the centre of Beirut, Lebanon, one of the largest cities in the Middle East. There are lots of cafes and restaurants, which open late at night. We love it here because it’s so friendly and you can always find the things you need—lots of people come to stay to learn Arabic and French. However, it can be noisy at night, and there is quite a lot of traffic during the day.

SEVEN-YEAR-OLD Ryan, a Chinese-American boy, spends his days in primary school and his evenings as an online celebrity. Ryan is a toy tester who unboxes new toys and shares his opinion with millions of his followers on his YouTube channel, “RyanToysReview.” Last year, the cute, bubbly (活泼的) — and enterprising (有创业精神的) — kid made $11 million.
Ryan is just one of the many thousands of young people who have discovered that the internet and its various platforms can provide plenty of money-making opportunities. All that is needed is a good idea and an internet connection.
Young Chinese are also being drawn to the internet as a possible career, or as an easy way to make a lot of money. In 2017, a survey of 13,000 Chinese college students found that 54% wanted to become internet celebrities. No doubt they see it as a good alternative to spending their lives working in an office cubicle (小隔间), but becoming an online celebrity isn’t as easy or as profitable as it may seem. According to the same survey, 80% of aspiring (有抱负的) online celebrities can’t make enough money to support themselves, and 15% make only a modest white-collar salary. That means you have to be one of the lucky or talented 5% to become rich and famous.
Zhang Kaiyi is one of the 5%. She started posting video clips (短视频) in 2017 and quickly attracted 4.8 million followers on Weibo. Zhang says, “It is content that can create value, and it is also content that can possibly reshape business.” Zhang’s advice was to keep your content fun, life-oriented, creative and positive.
What you also need is good communication skills and a good education. Most of the online celebrities you see have at least a college degree. They are smart, creative people. They also have good communication skills which enable them to connect with their audiences. Such things as eye contact and a fluent, direct speaking style are essential. It also helps to have an interesting personality, but that is a gift, not something that can be learned.
Little Ryan was lucky enough to have acquired all those good qualities (personality and communication skills) naturally. But his online celebrity may fade(消退) as he becomes a teenager and is still playing with children’s toys. Stay in school, Ryan, and get a good education ... just in case.

What do you think about shopping
May: I’m 35 years old. I like shopping, but shopping with young children is not an easy thing. I have to look after (照顾) them when I’m shopping. Shopping with my husband is not fun, either. I only go shopping with my husband when I need to buy something for him. If I want to buy a dress for myself, he always says something like “The queue (队伍) is too long” or “You don’t need to buy that right now”. I often go shopping with my friends because it’s fun. I like shopping alone, too.
Lisa: I’m 26. I like shopping very much, but I never go shopping at weekends. There are too many people in the shops. I don’t like shopping with other people. It usually takes me a lot of time to choose things because I never buy the first things I see. I always look around other shops to find the clothes with the best prices. I always buy things at very low (低的) prices. I don’t like buying food in small shops or street markets. I think food in the supermarket is fresh and cheap, so I usually shop there. In this way, I can save money and get nice food.

Sun Ruifeng, a mother in Beijing, changed some of her plans for her 8-year-old son’s summer vacation. She looked for an English training course, but in the end, she changed it to a swimming training class.
“Due to the stricter regulations (on subject-training classes, many parents like me choose sports or other projects for developing interests instead, ” Sun said.
Sun’s choice is part of the result of the government’s growing efforts to lighten the academic pressure on young students.
On July 24, Chinese government introduced a guideline(意见) to ease the burden(负担) of excessive homework and off-campus training for primary and junior high school students. It lists requirements in areas such as reducing the amount and the difficulty of homework and improving the quality of education and after-class services provided by schools.
For example homework for children below the third grade is not allowed while homework for junior high school students should take no longer than 90 minutes to finish.
According to the guideline, training institutions(机构) cannot teach students content that is too advanced for the school curriculum. No training courses can be taught on weekends, national holidays or during winter and summer vacations.
According to Global Times, more than 75 percent of Chinese urban children, from Grade 1 to Grade 12, are enrolled in training programs. However, some training institutions take part in anxiety marketing, selling unnecessary programs that increase the burden on students.
Many parents showed their support for the new moves. “Subject learning is enough at school and we hope to improve the children’s overall quality of life during holidays, ” a parent surnamed(姓) Zhou in Guangzhou told Xinhua.
However, there are also some concerns. A parent surnamed Chen in Shanxi said that although she agreed on new moves, she worried about what her son would do after school if both parents have no time to be with him.
At present, nine cities, including Beijing, Shanghai, Shenyang and Guangzhou, have been selected to carry out the guideline. It will later be rolled out nationwide.

THE EMPEROR’S NEW CLOTHES (Continued)
Now at last the Emperor wished to go himself and see the cloth while it was still on the looms. He took with him a few of his officials, including the old Prime Minister and the official who had already been there.
As soon as the weavers heard the Emperor coming, they pretended to work harder than ever, though they were not weaving a single thread through the empty looms.
“Isn’t the cloth magnificent (华丽的;高贵的) ” said the official and the Prime Minister. “What a splendid design! And what colors!” they said, while pointing to the empty looms.
They thought that everyone else could see the wonderful work of the weavers though they could not see it themselves.
“What on earth can this mean ” said the Emperor to himself. “I don’t see anything. This is horrible! But I mustn’t let anyone know.”
“The cloth is beautiful,” he cried out loud. “Beautiful! I am very pleased with it.”
The officials could see no more than the Emperor, but they all shouted, “Beautiful! Excellent! Magnificent (华丽的)!” and other such expressions. They told the Emperor that he should have new clothes made of this splendid cloth for the coming great procession (游行).
The Emperor nodded (点头). He tried hard to pretend to share in the pleasure of his officials and gave each of the weavers a medal (奖章).
The night before the procession, the two men had their lights burning all night long. They wanted everyone to see how hard they were working on the Emperor’s new clothes.
At last they cried, “Finished! The Emperor’s new clothes are now ready!”
Then the Emperor arrived with his high officials.
“Now if you will take off your clothes,Your Majesty (陛下), we will fit the new clothes on you in front of the mirror,” said the cheats.
The Emperor was then undressed, and the cheats pretended to dress him in his new clothes. The Emperor turned from side to side in front of the mirror.
“How splendid (灿烂的;辉煌的) the Emperor looks in his new clothes!” everyone cried. “And how well they fit! What a splendid design! What colors!”
“Well, I suppose I’m ready for the procession,” said the Emperor. “Don’t you think they are a nice fit ” And he turned again in front of the mirror, in order to make the others think he was looking at his new clothes.
“Yes, perfectly wonderful!” cried his officials.
And so the procession began.
The Emperor walked in the middle of the procession, through the streets of the city. And all the people standing by and those at the windows cried out, “Oh, how splendid our Emperor’s new clothes are! What a perfect fit!”
No one dared say that he could not see the Emperor’s new clothes. Suddenly a little child’s voice was heard: “But he has nothing on!”
“Good heavens (天哪)! Listen to that silly (傻的) child!” said the father.
“Did you hear what the child said ” some people nearby asked each other.
What the child had said was whispered (低语;耳语) from one to the other.
“I can’t see anything at all on the Emperor,” cried one or two of the braver ones.
The cry was taken up and soon everyone was nodding and saying, “BUT HE HAS NOTHING ON!”
The Emperor heard the cries. He felt very silly, for he knew that the people were right. But he thought, “The procession has started, and it must go on!”
So the Emperor held his head higher than ever. And the two officials who were following him took great trouble to pretend to hold up higher the train (拖裙(长袍曳在地上的部分)) of the robe (长袍) that wasn’t there at all.

Elle Luna is a designer, painter, and writer. She used to work as a fantastic designer on apps. However, she gave up her job in her 30s and started the 100-Day Project. It was Michael Bierut who first used the 100-Day Project at the Yale School of Art: each student chose something to do every day for 100 days. For example, one student made a poster in under a minute every day for 100 days; another danced every day and made a video. In 2014, Luna and her group started the 100-Day Project online. Everyone can take part in it. It’s simple — choose a creative project, do it every day for 100 days, and share your process (过程) online. For the 100-Day Project, it’s not just about what you have finished — it’s more about the process. A hundred days! Even Luna herself was questioning before she decided to jump in, “Can I finish it Will I push through when I’m busy Will I share even when I can’t do it well Will I show up every day ” Luna did it anyway. In the first year, Luna herself finished 100 days of self-portraits (自画像). If you can dream it, you can do it. People of different ages joined in. Hillary Patrick, a want-to-be artist and mum of two, finished a project of embroidery (刺绣) while she had to look after two kids. Are you hungry to start a creative project Do you want to be a part of a group that celebrates “process” Start thinking about your project, and invite friends to join, too. The world is not only hungry, but also thirsty for water. This may seem strange to you, since nearly 70% of the earth’s surface is covered with water. But about 97% of this huge amount is sea water, or salt water. Man can only drink and use the other 3%—the fresh water that comes from rivers, lakes, underground and other sources (来源), and we cannot even use all of that. Even worse, some of it has been polluted.
However, as things stand today(以目前的情况来看), this small amount of fresh water is still enough for us. But our need for water is increasing quickly—almost day by day. We should take steps to deal with this problem now and in this way we can get away from a serious world—wide water shortage (短缺) later on.
We all have to learn how to stop wasting our precious water. One of the first steps we should take is to develop ways of reusing it. Today in most large cities, water is used only once and then sent out into a sewer (污水管) system. From there it returns to sea or runs into underground places.
But even if(即使) every large city reused its water, we still would not have enough. All we’d have to do to make use of sea water in the world is to take away the salt. If we take these steps, we'll be in no danger of drying up.

Adopt Me, Please!
“You’re going to help the animals at a local shelter find homes. Just imagine: if they could talk or write, what would they say Please write letters for them to introduce them to their potential(潜在的) adopters (收养者)!”
Kensey Jones is a second-grade teacher at a primary school in Virginia, U.S.A.One day, she assigned(布置) this writing topic to her students.
To help them with their writing, Kensey brought a puppy named Snow from the shelter to school. The students played with Snow and learned about how the shelter worked. This experience inspired(启发) them to create lovely paintings and letters for 23 dogs and a cat. These pieces were later hung on the cages of the animals.
One of the letters reads, “Hello, my name is Sunday Special. I am a puppy. I would love to be adopted. If you do adopt me, I hope I will brighten up your Sundays like the SUN! You’ll be my Sunday Special, and I hope I’ll be yours!”
The warm words on these letters touched the hearts of potential animal adopters. All 24 of these animals found new homes before long. “I’m so glad to have helped them find great homes,” said one kid.

Getting Creative with crime
An experiment carried out at Newcastle University aimed at reducing the number of bike thefts has produced some unusual results. The most efficient way of stopping people from stealing bikes seems almost too simple to be true. If you want to persuade thieves not to act, make them feel they’re being watched!
Posters showing a large pair of eyes were put up near three bike racks at the university, while other bike racks had no posters. The researchers explained that the number of thefts decreased by 62 per cent compared to the previous year at racks with posters. However, at the other racks, thefts actually increased by 63 per cent. Experts claim that clearly visible images of eyes make people feel they’re being watched. They say that we all care what other people think about us and that’s why we behave better when we think someone is looking. Now officials have agreed to carry out similar projects at train stations all over the country.
The “giant eyes” poster isn’t the only unusual method being used to try and fight crime on UK streets. In the East Midlands city of Leicester, police are inviting people to make large woolly balls and hang them up in trees around the area. They hope that these colourful additions to neighbourhoods will help create a safer place to live. The thinking behind the idea is that if you create a pleasant environment, people are more likely to behave better. “We live in a world where our every move is being watched by CCTV cameras”, one of the organisers told us. “The cameras are there to deter (威慑) possible criminals, but they come at a price, and many people don’t like being watched 24 hours a day. We believe there’s another way. We want to encourage people to take more pride in where they live.”
However, not all residents are happy—many refuse to believe it will make any difference. They’re demanding that the police do more to reduce trouble in the area. One local resident told us, I recommend that the police stop wasting their time on mad plans like this and do some real policing. We need to see more policemen walking around our streets, especially at night.

Suddenly Stapleton sees a butterfly and he runs after it.
Then I hear the sound of steps (脚步声). I turn round and see a woman coming from Merripit House. It is Stapleton’s sister.
“Go back to London, immediately (立刻),” she says. “You must get away from this place, Sir Henry! Shhh, my brother is coming!”
“What I am not Sir Henry!”
“Are you not Sir Henry Baskerville ”
“No, no,” I say. “My name is Dr Watson.”
Just then Stapleton comes back. “This is my sister, Beryl, Dr Watson. Come and see our home, Merripit House.”
Inside the house the rooms are large and elegant (讲究的). We have tea and Mr Stapleton tells me that he was a teacher in the north of England before moving here. But when I look out the window at the grey moor outside, I feel strangely sad. I think of the place, the dangerous mud, the strange sound and Miss Staplcton’s warming. They invite me to stay for lunch but I decide to return to Sir Henry.
On the way back I am surprised to see Miss Stapleton sitting on a rock by the side of the path.
“Dr Watson,” she says. “I want to say sorry. Do not worry about my words.”
“But what is the danger (危险) ”
“Do you know the story of the hound ”
“I do not believe that nonsense.”
“But I believe it. Pleasse, listen to me. Take Sir Henry away from this place. The world is wide (广阔的). And this place is dangerous for members of the Baskerville family. ”
Then she gets up and goes back towards Merripit House. I continue my walk to Baskerville Hall, thinking about the danger.

Name: Wasfia Nazreen Born: 27 October 1982 Job: Mountaineer Known for: Being the first Bangladeshi to climb the highest summits in Africa, Antarctica, North America, South America, Asia, Australia and Europe Future plans: To teach young women and school girls in her country about outdoor activities
Mountaineer (登山者) Wasfia Nazreen is the first person from Bangladesh (孟加拉国) in South Asia to climb the “Seven Summits” ——the highest mountain on each continent (大陆). She talks about overcoming (克服) difficulties and doing the unexpected (出乎意料的)...“When we climbed Mount Kilimanjaro (乞力马扎罗山), the highest mountain in Africa, we brought a special kit with us—a collapsible hula-hoop(可折叠呼拉圈)! I grew up in Bangladesh. Young girls were not allowed to do many things in my country, and hula-hooping in public was one of them.
“So we decided to take the hula-hoop to the top of Kilimanjaro and to the summits of all seven continents! It was my way of getting back my right to play outdoors.
“No good thing in life comes without difficulties, and all difficulties seem scary at first. But it’s always been worth it for me to get them over. For example, while climbing Mount Everest (珠穆朗玛峰) in Nepal (尼泊尔), we were close to the top when our camp was destroyed by an avalanche (雪崩). Without our extra supplies, we were forced to return to base camp and start all over again. It was frustrating (沮丧的) at the time, but reaching the top was more meaningful because of all the extra efforts we had made.
“You have to go for your dreams no matter how big they are or where you’re from. And the summit is reachable as long as you’re persistent and hard-working.”
