Mass media are tools of commun
ication.Mass media allow us to record and pass information rapidly to a large, scattered (分散的) audience. They extend our ability to communicate with each other by helping us overcome barriers caused by time and space.
There are various ways in which mass media make daily life easy for us. First, they inform and help us keep a watch on our world. They gather and pass on information we would be unlikely or unable to get on our own.
Second, mass media help us to arrange time and life. What we talk about and what we think about are greatly influenced by the media. When people get together, they tend to talk about certain happenings in the newspapers or on TV. Because we are exposed to different points of view through different kinds of media every day, we are able to evaluate (评价) all sides of a certain issue.
Third, the media are used to persuade people. A good example is advertisements through the media. Newspapers, magazines and TV are filled with all kinds of colorful, persuasive (说服的) advertisements. Though many advertisements may not say openly that they want you to buy a certain product, they describe their products in such a way that you may want to buy them.
Fourth, the media also entertain. All of the media make some efforts to entertain their audience. For instance, even though the newspaper is primarily a medium of information, it also contains entertainment features. Television, motion pictures, fiction books and some radio stations and magazines are devoted mainly to entertainment. It is estimated that in the future, the entertainment function of mass media will become even more important than it is now.

People often ask me how I became successful in that six?year period of time while many of the people I knew did not. The answer is simple: The things I found to be easy to do, but they found to be easy not to do.
I found it easy to set the goals that could change my life. They found it easy not to. I found it easy to read the books that could affect my thinking. They found that easy not to. I found it easy to attend the classes. They said it probably really wouldn't matter. Six years later, I'm a millionaire and they are all still blaming the economy, the government and company policies. They neglected (忽视) to do the basic, easy things.
In fact, the primary reason most people are not doing can be summed up in a single word: neglect. It is not the lack of money — banks are full of money. It is not the lack of opportunity — the government continues to offer the most opportunities. It is not the lack of books — libraries are full of books and they are free! It is not the schools — the classrooms are full of good teachers. We have plenty of good advisors. The major reason that so few take advantage of all that we have is neglect.
Don't do the things which cause us to feel guilty (感到内疚的) and guilt erodes our self?confidence. As our self?confidence reduces, so does the level of our activity. And as our activity goes down, so do our results. And as our results suffer, our attitude begins to weaken. And as our attitude begins changing from positive to negative, our self?confidence becomes even less ... and on and on it goes.
So my suggestion is that when giving choice of “easy to” and “easy not to”, do not neglect to do the simple, basic, “easy” but potentially life?changing activities.

6.The underlined word “erodes” in Paragraph 4 probably means “________”.
A.changes B.neglects
C.weakens D.exposes
解析:选C 词义猜测题。根据画线词所在句“Don't do the things which cause us to feel guilty (感到内疚的) and guilt erodes our self?confidence.”可知不要做那些让我们感到内疚的事情,因为内疚会减弱我们的自信心。故选C。
7.What is the main reason that some people fail to succeed
A.They don't have good opportunities.
B.They neglect the importance of success.
C.They lack the government's support.
D.They don't make use of what they have.
解析:选D 细节理解题。根据第三段最后一句“The major reason that so few take advantage of all that we have is neglect.”可知没成功的主要原因就是因为很少有人会充分利用我们所拥有的。故选D。
8.What would be the best title for the passage
A.Being self?confident works
B.Nothing cannot be neglected
C.Everything is easy to do
D.Success is easy, but so is neglect
解析:选D 标题归纳题。本文是一篇议论文,告诉人们成功很简单。很简单的事情就能迈向成功,但是人们却认为太简单不去做,成功往往就是这样被忽视掉。故选D。

The summer vacation is just around the corner and many parents and children are looking forward to the months when alarm clocks don't sound in the early morning, bed times are pushed back a bit in the evening, and schedules relax in between. For many families, it is meaningful to participate in some summer camps. Consider the following seven tips to help you make the most of your experience.
__1__
If your child plays sports or dances throughout the school year, why not explore other opportunities in the summer months Maybe your son has an interest in science that he'd like to investigate beyond the classroom. Perhaps your daughter has an interest in nature she'd like to explore.
Put the friend system into action.
Inquire if other parents (neighbors, parents of your child's friends) would be interested in having their child participate in the same camp. Having a friend take part in the camp can make the adjustment easier, and parents can share a car together.
Don't be surprised by additional fees.
__2__ In addition to registration fees, are there equipment fees, snack fees, or other expenses for which you'll be responsible
Check the weather forecast.
__3__ Fast forward to three months and possibly add 20 degrees to the temperature. Will your child enjoy running the soccer field under the hot August sun Perhaps an indoor camp during the late summer months might work better.
Prepare for outdoor activities.
Apply sunscreen before camp begins. Provide your child with a large water bottle and a healthy snack.__4__ Ask camp counselors or assistants how many breaks are permitted.
Arrive early to observe.
Pick a day to arrive early or stay a few minutes late so you can see the camp in action. Doing so gives you hands on observation as to how the camp is organized.
__5__
Don't view day camp as simply a summer babysitting service. Ask your child about his or her day. Engage in a conversation about what activities they did.
A.If permitted, have your child wear a hat or sunglasses.
B.Be aware of the starting and ending times of the camp.
C.Show interest.
D.Town recreation departments, local schools, and churches are just some of the many places where you can find a variety of activities to fit your child's interests.
E.Use the summer to discover different interests.
F.When you are doing your camp research in May, an outdoor soccer clinic in August sounds great.
G.Know the entire cost of the camp before signing up.

NEWSPAPERS have certainly been around for a long time. Many New Zealand newspapers are now heading towards their 125th anniversary (周年纪念) of the first publication and some New Zealand papers are more than 140 years old.
However, some people think that newspapers are yesterday's medium (传媒) and that new media, like television and even the Internet, will in the very near future cause newspapers to die. What is clear is that the growth of new media, and in particular the Internet, will cause newspapers to change themselves and change their product to meet customers' needs.
People read newspapers because of their unique (独特的) strength. They_have_a_large_audience_and_yet_a_certain_appeal_(吸引力). They reach the majority of the population each day through covering national and international news and yet they offer interest to gardeners, cooks and even slaves to fashion.
Newspapers also remain strong because of people's continued love of reading. Reading is an active and involving (专注的) process, but people are able to read at their own speed and return to newspapers for reference purposes.
Newspapers will certainly not stop the Internet being a competitor (竞争者). But no newly introduced news medium has ever killed an old one, and if best guesses are to be made then it is likely that this will be the case with this new medium as well.

There are many useful suggestions that can help one to improve English. Here are some of them to increase one's English language vocabulary.
Learning English vocabulary is about much more than just learning the right words. It is based on understanding important words and expressions.
Learning a word will not help very much if you quickly forget it. Researches show that it takes from 10 to 20 repetitions (重复) to really make a word part of your vocabulary. Since most words are learned from how they are used in context (上下文), the more words one is shown, the better vocabulary one will have. Keep a piece of paper close to you. When you read, pay close attention to the word you do not know, write the word down and try to understand its meaning from the context. Then look up the word in a dictionary.
Remember that if you do not use English words that you have just learned in conversation or writing, you will forget them very quickly. So the best way to learn new words effectively is just by trying to use them in conversation and writing. Remember also that practice is the key to fluent spoken English.
Building vocabulary is a life?long task. Remember: “In the beginning was the word.” Your future could depend on how rich your vocabulary is. It will also determine the quality of your communication.

The Internet, together with laptops (笔记本电脑) and cellphones, makes it possible that almost everyone can at any time and in almost any place get some news for free or for few fees.
You'll browse the computer newspapers or magazines just like switching on TV. An electronic voice will tell you stories about the latest events. You'll even get to choose the kind of voice you want to hear. Want more information on the brief story A simple touch makes the entire text appear.
There are the predictions (预言) from experts working on the newspapers of the future. Pictured as part of home?based media and entertainment systems, computer newspapers and magazines would unite printed and broadcast news, offering information and analyzing (分析) video images of news events.
The continuing loss of readers will result in a small number of advertisements in newspapers. It makes no sense to spend millions of dollars to print ads.
With the development of technology, more and more electronic medium have been created until now, but replacing the traditional newspapers and magazines has a long way to go, because the resistance to computer newspapers and magazines from journalism (新闻业) may be much stronger. Don't be surprised if you see a group of people dancing or shouting on the square. They are a flash mob (快闪族). Confused by their name Actually, a flash mob, organized with the help of the Internet or other digital communications networks, is a group of people who gather suddenly in a public place, do something unusual for a period of time, such as exchanging books, coming together to look at the sky, waving their hands and shouting something at the top of their lungs for 30 seconds, and then quickly disappear before the police can arrive.
Bill Wasik, senior editor of Harper's Magazine, organized the first flash mob in Manhattan in May 2003 and the first successful flash mob gathered on June 3, 2003 at Macy's department store involving 100 people gathering on Macy's Department Store. Following this, about 200 people flooded the lobby of the Hyatt hotel, applauding in one voice for fifteen seconds, and next participants pretending to be tourists on a trip invaded a shoe shop in Soho. A later mob saw hundreds of people in Central Park making bird noises.
Wasik claimed that he created flash mobs as a social experiment designed to tease hipsters (追逐时尚的人), and highlight the cultural atmosphere of agreement and of being part of “the next big thing”. Many web logs, chat rooms and Web groups are devoted to the craze. Though flash mobs were originally regarded as useless, the concept has already developed for the benefit of political and social events. Flash mobbing takes advantage of the efficiency of communicating information on Websites and by email, and protesters can similarly use the “on and off” concept to be involved in political events. Such flash mob gatherings can sometimes shock or frighten people who are not aware of what is taking place. They also have enormous economic potential, such as using flash mobs to advertise a product.
The flash mob is now becoming more and more popular. People use it to do many things. For example, in 2009, hundreds of Michael Jackson's fans took part in a flash mob to remember him, gathering outside the railway station in Liverpool, singing and dancing Michael's famous song, beat it together. In another example, some people took part in a flash mob to warn people against negative words. Flash mobs give people from all walks of life an opportunity to come together to create a memory.

I became a teacher at 55 years of age. Things were going on so well during my first two periods. Then came my 3rd period class — the 8th graders with only one girl in the class. I thought the class was bad until the intercom (内部通话系统) came on and the office was asking if I was in my classroom. “Of course,” I responded. A student who knew he was going to be late for class had informed the office I was not in my classroom — 10 minutes after class began.
When the student came in and I walked over to greet him, he said, “Don't touch me.” He then put his head on his desk and did not seem to listen to a word I said. I did not confront (使面对) him with the “lie” to the office.
The next day he came into class on time. This time instead of listening or following instructions on keyboarding software, he played Internet games. I walked over to him. He looked at me ready to snap back (没好气地顶撞) at anything I said. I asked him, “Where did you learn to use a computer like that?” he looked at me surprised. I repeated, “You are really good at that. Where did you learn so much?” He began to tell me his father “used to” buy him games to play, but not anymore. I could feel the pain.
Instead of blaming him for being off task, I surprised him and praised him for his skills. Then, I asked him to show me what he could do in our software. He was amazed.
On a Friday night at a high school football game, I really got my breakthrough (突破). From about five feet away, in front of his friends he came over to me and gave me a big hug saying, “Hi, Ms. Marie.” We talked for a while and before he walked away, he had hugged me two more times. This was a long way from “don't touch me” on that first day.
