Why are so many people afraid to fail Quite simply because we forget that failure is part of the human life and that every person has the right to fail. Every person is able to fight failure and finally succeed.
Most parents work hard at preventing failure or protecting their children from the knowledge that they have failed. One way is to lower standards (标准). When a child finishes making a table, the mother describes it as “perfect” even though it doesn't stand still. Another way is to blame others. If John fails in science, his teacher is unfair or stupid.
There's a problem with the two ways. It makes a child unprepared for life in the real world. Young children need to learn that no one can be best at everything, no one can win all the time, and that it's possible to enjoy a game even when you don't win. A child often feels terrible, of course, when he is not invited to a birthday party, or is not chosen into a football team. But parents should not say “It doesn't matter.” quickly. The young should be allowed to experience failure and be helped to come out of it.
Failure never gives people pleasure. It hurts both adults and children. But it can be really good to your life when you learn to use it. You must learn to ask “Why did I fail?” Don't blame anyone else. Ask yourself what you did wrong and how you can improve. If someone else can help, don't be shy about asking them. Success just repeats what has been done. It is not as good a teacher as failure. You can learn how to give a good party from an unsuccessful one.

6.Which of the following does a person need to learn when he fails
A.It's impossible to enjoy a game if he misses it.
B.He is the worst of all.
C.It's natural not to win a game and no one can win all the time.
D.His teammates are not good enough.
解析:选C 细节理解题。根据第三段提到 “Young children need to learn that no one can be best at everything, no one can win all the time, and that it's possible to enjoy a game even when you don't win”孩子需要明白没有人能把一切做得很好, 没有人能一直赢, 当你不能胜利时, 学会享受比赛, 故选C项。

How to remember names easily
Not everyone is good at remembering names. 1 What's worse is that someone else is with you and you know you'll have to introduce the two of them to each other. Here are some strategies that may help you remember names easily.
Listen attentively. 2 Listen attentively to the name and concentrate on the face. Don't look at the person's clothes or her jewelry (首饰). If you did not hear the name clearly, ask the name to be repeated.
Find connections. The person you are introduced to may be a doctor, a mother of five or a cancer survivor. 3 The details may come out during your conversation or another person may provide them at a later time.
Repeat the name. 4 If the conversation is short, once should be enough. For a longer conversation, you can repeat her name two or three times, but never use his or her name in every sentence.
Refer the name to another person. You can tell a friend or a family member that you met, for example, Anna Smith at a party. Describe a little about Anna. 5 However, this is an exercise for you to remember the person's name.
A.Write down the name when necessary.
B.You'd better connect the details about the person to his or her name.
C.Of course your friend may not care so much for this information.
D.Pronounce and spell the name so that you can remember it.
E.Whenever you are introduced to someone, keep your mind on it.
F.During the course of your conversation with anyone new to you, use his or her name once in a while.
G.You may have been in situations where you see a familiar face but you just can't remember his or her name.

所以B项“You'd better connect the details about the person to his or her name.”要把这个人的一些细节和他或她的名字联系在一起。和段落大意一致。
4.选F 本段的建议是“Repeat the name.” 也就是说要有意识地多重复对方的名字, 用这种方法强化记忆。F项“During the course of your conversation with anyone new to you, use his or her name once in a while.”正是这一方法的具体使用。
5.选C 根据前面一句“Describe a little about Anna.”作者建议在对话中提到这个人的名字, 但是和你说话的人对这个信息并不感兴趣, 但你可以通过这种方法记得别人的名字。C项与上下文语义一致。

The Sorbonne, a famous university, is on the left bank (south side) of the river. The beautiful white church Sacre Coeur lies on top of the hill called Montmartre on the right bank (north side) of the Seine.
There are many other famous places in Paris, such as the famous museum the Louvre; the most famous landmark in this city must be the Eiffel Tower.
Paris as well as the Cathedral of Notre Dame is named after a group of people called the Parisaii. Last summer I went through a training program and became a literacy volunteer. The training I received, though excellent, didn't tell me how it was to work with a real student, however. When I began to discover what other people's lives were like because they could not read, I realized the true importance of reading.
My first student Marie was a 44 year old single mother of three children. In the first lesson, I found out she walked two miles to the nearest supermarket twice a week because she didn't know which bus to take. When I told her I would get her a bus schedule, she told me it would not help because she couldn't read it. She said she also had difficulty once she got to the supermarket because she couldn't always remember what she needed. Also, she could only recognize items by sight, so if the product had a different label, she would not recognize it as the product she wanted.
As we worked together, learning how to read built Marie's self-confidence. She began to make rapid progress and was even able to take the bus to the supermarket. After this successful trip, she reported how self-confident she felt. At the end of the program, she began helping her youngest son, Tony, a shy first grader, with his reading. I found that helping Marie to build her self-confidence was more rewarding than anything I had ever done before.
As a literacy volunteer, I learned a great deal about teaching and helping others. In fact, I may have learned more from the experience than Marie did.

Are the British people Europeans? This may seem a strange question to Africans and Asians, who tend to think of all white men as Europeans. But the British, when they are in Britain, do not regard themselves as Europeans. The Europeans, to them, are those rather excitable foreigners from the other side of the English Channel, who have never learnt how to speak English. Europe is “the Continent”:a place full of interest for British tourists, but also the source of almost all the wars in which Britain has ever been involved. Thus, although geographically speaking Britain is a part of Europe, yet the fact that it is a separate island has made its people feel very, very insular (孤立的). They feel, and in many ways are, different from the rest of Europe and they sometimes annoy continental nations by failing to support them, or even to understand them, in time of need.
Where did the British people come from? This is an extraordinary interesting question, since they are a mixture of many different races, and all these races invaded Britain at various times from Europe. Nobody knows very much about Britain before the Romans came during the first century B. C., but there had been at least three invasions before that. The first of these was by a dark haired Mediterranean race called the Iberians. The other two were by Celtic tribes: first the Gaels, whose descendants are the modern Scots and Irish, some of whom still speak the Gaelic language;and second the Britons, who gave their name to the whole island of Britain. These were the people whom the Romans conquered. The Romans gave the Britons a good deal of their civilization, but they never settled in Britain in very large numbers, so the British race survived until the overthrow of the Roman Empire by the“barbarians”, i.e. the numerous Germanic tribes which overran the whole of Western Europe.

Bear, deer and small animals are a frequent site. If primitive camping isn't your style, there's a second campground within the park, 2 miles north of the dam which is outfitted with grills, picnic tables and toilets.

Many gardeners believe that“talking”to their plants helps them grow — it turns out that they may not be crazy after all. According to the scientists from the University of Exeter, plants may keep communicating with each other through a secret “unseen” language.
For their experiment, the scientists picked a cabbage plant that is known to send out a gas when its surface is cut. In order to get video evidence of the communication, they changed the cabbage gene by adding the protein — luciferase (荧光素酶), which is what makes fireflies (萤火虫) glow in the dark.
When the changed cabbage plant was in full bloom, they cut a leaf off with a pair of scissors, and almost immediately, thanks to the luciderase, they could see the plant sending out “methyl jasmonate (茉莉酸甲酯)”.
While this was a known fact, what was surprising was the fact that the minute this gas began to give out, the nearby cabbage plants seemed to sense some kind of danger and started to send out a gas that they normally have to keep predators (捕食者) like caterpillars (毛虫) away.
What the scientists are not sure is whether the plants are trying to warn the other leaves or the near plants about the danger — something that will require further research. However, the team, which is led by Professor Nick Smirnoff, is quite excited about the findings because this is the first time it has been proved that plants do not live a passive life, but actually move, sense and even communicate with each other.
However, before you get all concerned, they are quite sure that plants do not feel the pain when they are cut, since they do not have nerves — so go ahead and bite into that juicy carrot!
