A car made from a banana
Have you experienced a car made from a banana or a pineapple It's not a joke. Scientists in Brazil have developed a new way to use fibers from fruit plants to reinforce car plastics.
By using fibers from seemingly delicate fruits such as bananas and pineapples, the scientists claim that they can strengthen new plastics, making them not only stronger and lighter, but more sustainable (可持续的) as well.
“They (the new plastics) are light, but very strong — 30 percent lighter and three to four times stronger than old plastics,” research leader Alcides Leao from Sao Paulo State University in Brazil told the American Chemical Society. Some of the fibers can be as strong as Kevlar, a super strong material used to make bulletproof vests. Besides, the plastics are also more resistant to damage from heat, water, oxygen and even spilled gasoline.
Cellulose (纤维素) is the main component (成分) of wood and has been used for centuries to make paper. Recently scientists have discovered that intensive (密集的) processing of wood releases tiny or nano cellulose fibers, so tiny that 50,000 could fit across the width of a single human hair. When mixed with other raw materials, these nano cellulose fibers can make plastics stronger.
According to Leao, pineapple leaves and stems (茎), and a plant related to the pineapple in South America, called curaua, rather than wood may be the most promising source for nano cellulose. To create the plastics, researchers put the leaves and stems of pineapples and other plants into a device similar to a pressure cooker. Then they added certain chemicals and heated the mixture over several cycles, producing a powder that was then added to the plastics.
The process is costly, but it takes just 1 pound of nano cellulose to produce 100 pounds of super strong, light weight plastics, Leao pointed out.
Some car makers have already tested these nano cellulose plastics and scientists have predicted the plastics would be in use within two years, mainly for bodies of cars.
语篇解读:本文是一篇有关科普产品的介绍。作者介绍了一种新型的超强、轻型塑料产品的优势以及对此产品的展望。
1. The underlined word “reinforce” in the first paragraph is closest in meaning to “ ”.
A. take the place of
B. make something stronger

4. We can conclude from the article that nano cellulose .
A. costs too much to produce
B. is the best if produced from wood
C. is about the width of a single human hair
D. is currently being tested to build bodies of cars
解析:选D 细节理解题。第六段介绍1磅的nano cellulose就能生产100磅的这种塑料。由此可知A项错误。第五段第一句话告诉我们木头中的nano cellulose并不是最好的原材料,故B项错误。根据第四段中的“... so tiny that 50,000 could fit across the width of a single human hair”可知C项错误。根据最后一段可判断出D项正确。

Telemedicine is the name for when doctors give advice to patients by telephone or the Internet, or when health care providers in rural areas connect with specialists in big cities.
Telemedicine has existed for a long time, but the rise of smart phones, tablets and webcam equipped computers is raising telemedicine to new levels. Some health care systems in the United States now offer Virtual Urgent Care, patients see a doctor by video chat without having to leave home.
Diana Rae is a nurse educator in the western state of Washington. She recently showed how Virtual Urgent Care works. She used an iPad tablet and skype — the video chat service.
Doctor Green has the patient describe her symptoms, then the doctor performs a physical exam by demonstrating what he wants her to do. Doctor Green decides that the problem is a silence infection. For medicine, he prescribes an antibiotic. He says about 3 out of 4 patients have health problems that can be treated like this — through Virtual Urgent Care, that means a video chat could replace a visit to the doctor's office.
The Franciscan Health System is based in Tacoma, Washington. Franciscan charges $35 for this kind of virtual house call, that is much less than the cost of going to an emergency room, a doctor's office or an urgent care clinic.
After trying the video conference, Diana Rae says,“I would've paid twice that for the convenience of getting taken care of without having to sit in a waiting room, wait, and get exposed to everyone else's germs.”
Franciscan has a deal with a company called Carena to add virtual urgent care by Skype or phone. Carena is one of several companies doing this kind of work around the country. But a company official says state rules have not kept progress with developments in telemedicine. The workers who provide virtual urgent care must be separately licensed in each state where the company does business. For now, that means Carena doctors can treat patients in Washington state and California for example, but not in neighboring Oregon or Idaho.

A
I'm a skeptic when it comes to the benefits of taking vitamins and other supplements. We swallow far more vitamins than any other country — yet we're not the healthiest folks by far, nor do we live the longest.
There's more bad news for vitamins this week:Taking folic acid (维生素B) and vitamin B12 supplements doesn't prevent heart attacks or death, according to a major new study in the Journal of the American Medical Association. It was hoped they would, since the vitamins do reduce levels of homocysteine, an amino acid (氨基酸) that is higher in the blood of people who have a higher risk of heart disease. In fact, homocysteine was reduced 30 per cent after one year of treatment in the participants who took both vitamins. But in the following three years, many vitamin takers died as those who didn't take the vitamins. Even worse, the study was stopped early because another similar study suggested that there may be an increased risk of cancer from taking B vitamins.
I had been taking a health food store monster multivitamin (综合维生素剂) for months. Coincidentally, I had been experiencing some strange numbness in my legs that was starting to scare me. I remember sitting in a long meeting with my ankles crossed, when I tried to stand up I crumpled on the floor and hit my chin on the glass coffee table because my legs had gone completely numb and worthless. As I sat there and shook my legs, I got that “pins and needles” feeling and soon was OK. But it scared me enough to make an appointment with a neurologist, who suggested an MRI to rule out multiple sclerosis, stroke, or a brain tumor (肿块).
While I'll never know for sure if the vitamins caused my problem, many studies have reminded us that pill forms of vitamins and minerals don't provide the same benefits as getting them from food. There's a lot we don't know about how the human body works. Until we know more, I'm getting most of my vitamins from the farmer's market.

Four Simple Keys to Transform Your Life
The Power of Choice. Every one of us makes countless choices every day. Every choice we make has an impact on our lives. Even insignificant choices can affect what we experience and how we feel. When hunger strikes, we can reach for a healthy, nutritious snack, or we can choose the sugar high of junk food. The more important the decision, the greater
its effect. For instance, how do I act towards that person who treated me badly Do I generally choose to be passive, or do I actively set clear intentions and create what I want in my life Every choice we make, however big or small, affects us in some way.
How Do You Make Choices If you are interested in living a richer, fuller life, there is a foundation upon which you can base all of your decisions which can make life better not only for you, but also for those around you. This foundation is to choose based on what's best for all. Imagine a world where every parent, spouse (配偶), friend, teacher, businessperson, and politician truly did their best to choose what's best for all involved in every decision they made. We would certainly live in a more caring, supportive world.
It's the Intention. “But how do I know what is really best?” you might ask. The answer is simple. It doesn't matter. What matters is not the choice you make, but rather the intention behind your choice. What matters is that whatever decision you make, you are clear in your intention of choosing based on what's best for all. If it later turns out that you made what appears to have been a bad choice, there's no need for guilt. Knowing that you did your best to choose with a sincere desire for what's best for all, your conscience stays clear and open. This then allows you to more easily learn from your mistakes, and to live with a clear heart and mind.
What's Best for Me, Too! Choosing what's best does not mean you have to always sacrifice yourself for others. An overly (过度的) exhausted mother can lose her temper easily. Some time off for this mother might seem selfish, yet in the long run, it can help her to be a better mother to her children. So as we move through each day of our lives, let us remember to include ourselves as we do our best to choose what's best for all.

6. How should we make choices
A. To be interested in a richer, fuller life.
B. To make life better for ourselves.
C. To imagine a world where everyone did their best.
D. To choose based on what's best for all.
解析:选D 细节理解题。从第二段的句子“This foundation is to choose based on what's best for all”可知我们做选择的时候,应该基于对所有的人都好的选择,故选D。
7. Why does the author say,“What matters is not the choice you make, but rather the intention behind your choice”?
A. Because the choice you make is not important.
B. Because you may have made a bad choice.
C. Because this allows you to stay clear and improve.
D. Because there is no need for guilt.
解析:选C 句意理解题。从句意可知重要的是选择背后的意图,再根据画线句后的内容“ ... clear in your intention of”可知选C。
8. How to choose what is best for us
A. We need to devote all our life to others.
B. We need to put away some time for ourselves.
C. We need to sacrifice ourselves for others.
D. We need to be selfless every minute.

In the last 500 years nothing about people — not their clothes, ideas or languages — has changed as much as what they eat. Chocolate drink was first made from the seeds of the cacao (可可) tree by South American Indians. The Spanish introduced it to the rest of the world during the 1500s. And although it was very expensive, it quickly became popular. In London, shops where chocolate drinks were served became important places. Some still exist today. The potato is also from the New World. Around the 1600s, the Spanish brought it from Peru to Europe, where it soon was widely grown. Ireland became so dependent on it that thousands of Irish people starved (挨饿) when the crop failed during the years of 1845-1846, and thousands more were forced to go to live in America.
There are many other foods that have traveled from South America to the Old World. But some others went in the opposite direction. Brazil is now the world's largest grower of coffee, and coffee is an important crop in other South American countries. But it is native to Ethiopia. It was first made into a drink by Arabs during the 1400s. According to an Arabic story, coffee was discovered when a goat keeper named Lakdi noticed that his goats were eating red fruits on a coffee tree. He tried one and experienced the “wide awake (彻底清醒的)” feeling that one third of the world's population now starts the day with.

If the main reason that you haven't been getting together with the people you already know is that you have gotten too busy, take a good look at how you spend your pare it with your real values and priorities (优先考虑的事) in life. Is your busy lifestyle really bringing you the quality of life that you want
If you have become too busy to have time for friends, why does this happen Are you seeking material joys in your life at the expense of relationships with other human beings Have you allowed your time to do over committed because you never say “No” to anyone Don you insist on doing things by yourself that could be delegated to others If so, why Do you believe that everything depends on you
