Walking down the narrow streets of the Kumartuli neighborhood, one is sure to come across sculptors working hard in small, sometimes shabby, workshops.Kumartuli is in Kolkata, India.Once known as Calcutta, the city is the capital of West Bengal, a state in eastern India. It is also home to a community of more than 400 artisans who are continuing one of India's ancient traditions.
The word Kumar means “to sculpt”, and tuli means “place”. The potters (陶工) of Kumartuli spend the entire year sculpting models of Hindu gods for various religious festivals. The techniques used to create these idols (神像) have been passed down from generation to generation and are fiercely protected family secrets. By tradition, the craft was taught to brothers and sons. Today, some women are sculptors, too.
The best time to visit Kumartuli is between March and late August. That is when artisans are sculpting idols of Durga, a Hindu goddess, and her children for Durga Puja, a major Hindu festival celebrated for 10 days each year, typically in late September.
“Each complete figure takes almost three months to make,” explains potter Naresh Chandra Pal.“The senior most sculptor in the family then performs Chokkhu Daan, which means gifting eyesight.”A potter paints the idol's eyes, which, according to popular belief, symbolizes breathing life into it.Most idols are more than 10 feet tall.
“Idol making forms a large part of India's slowly dying artistic and cultural heritage (遗产),” says Haru Pal, a Kumartuli artisan.“This makes the tradition even more important.”
Despite their talents, most of these artisans remain largely unknown in India. Families live in crowded apartments by their workshops.“The younger generation is unwilling to make idol making their profession,” says Ramesh Pal.“We are neither appreciated enough nor given a proper income.”
The government has promised to build modern housing and repair the workshops in Kumartuli. A community art studio is also planned.“However,” Ramesh says,“the government has yet to carry out these promises.”
4.What do we know about Kumartuli
A.Its major industry is tourism.
B.It is an important city in India.
C.The name is related to its location.
D.There are many craftsmen living there.
5.Where might you find the sculptures
A.In most Indian houses.
B.At a festival celebration.
C.In some urban communities.
D.At a souvenir shop for tourists.
6.What can we infer from Naresh Chandra Pal's words
A.The craft will disappear gradually.
B.The Indians believe in various gods.
C.The idol making is passed down to males.
D.The sculpting of idols' eyes is very important.
7.What is the idol making artisans' life like
A.Hard. B.Restless.

Dogs are called man's best friends, and owners who don't play with their dogs find their pets suffer behavior problems such as anxiety and aggression, according to a survey.
Dogs show symptoms such as “complaining and jumping up, as well as pulling on the lead and not coming when called”, the study of 4,000 dog owners said. And scientists are beginning to agree that play is the key to a dog's happiness.
The research, carried out by Emily Blackwell of Bristol University, showed just one in five owners played with their dogs six times a day, while half played twice or three times a day with their pets and 10 percent played just once. The study found that there was “a growing acceptance” that the “frequency of play for dogs is a really good indicator of their quality of life”. There is a clear association in the results. Owners report more potential behavior problems in dogs that play less.
The survey, which will be broadcast on the Channel 4 program Dogs: Their Secret Lives, also shows that a dog's favorite game is “fetch”, according to 43 percent of owners. However, Laura Dobb, who took part in the show, said if she threw her rescue dog Nash a tennis ball, he would throw it up in the air but wouldn't bring it back.
The type of game owners played with their pets was important, according to one expert, who said that owners needed to find out which ones their animals enjoyed rather than “imposing a game”. When owners chose to play tug with their pets, he added that it was “rubbish” if they felt they had to let their dogs win out of fear. The animal would “dominate (主宰) their whole life”.
8.What plays an important part in a dog's happiness
A.Making friends with it.
B.Complaining about it.
C.Pulling on the lead.
D.Playing with it often.
9.It can be learned that the game “fetch” is ________.
A.a game that all dogs will prefer to play
B.a game that a dog catches something and brings it back
C.a dog's game that becomes popular because of the Channel 4
D.a game that can show the secret of dogs' lives
10.If we impose a game to a dog, it is quite possible that ________.
A.the dog quite enjoys the game
B.the game is quite popular among dogs
C.this is a newly invented dog game
D.the game may not be the dog's cup of tea
11.We can infer from the passage that ________.
A.owners spend too much time on their dogs
B.Laura Dobb never did “fetch” game with her dog
C.it's unwise to let the dog win a game purposely
D.many owners are afraid of their pet animals

What does Shakespeare offer English language learners — apart from the theatrical and literary experience awaiting anyone who hears or reads his poems and sees or reads his plays A great deal. Shakespeare is in many ways the perfect advanced teacher — he shows us how to use the resources (资源) of a language as effectively (有效地) as possible.
He has of course been an important general influence on the development of English, because many of his words and sentences have become part of everyday modern use. You are quoting (引述) Shakespeare when you say that truth will out, the game is up, and you haven't slept a wink (haven't slept at all). If you look in the unabridged (未删节的) Oxford English Dictionary (OED), you'll find over 2,000 words which have their first recorded use in Shakespeare, such as assassination, outwear, and weather bitten.
Far more important, though, is the way his linguistic strategies provide guidelines for modern users. He added un to make new words, such as unbuild and unmusical; today we do the same thing with uncool and unfunny. He added less to make airless and languageless; today we say such things as computerless and iPadless. He also turned nouns into verbs; his characters nose things as well as smell them; they ear things as well as hear them; they are windowed (displayed in a window) and mudded (covered by mud). Today, the Internet provides many examples of people texting, googling, and tweeting, and doing many things that were originally nouns. This is well within the spirit of Shakespeare.
Shakespeare teaches learners how to be daring in their use of English. It is a sign of real fluency when learners can take a rule and change it to suit their purposes. Perhaps we should view Shakespeare — the greatest writer in the English language — in a new way: the best English teacher.
12.Why does the author regard Shakespeare as a great teacher
A.He had very advanced teaching skills.
B.He offered much learning resources.
C.He made more people love plays.
D.He made the best use of English.
13.What can we infer about the expressions in the underlined part
A.They are quite confusing.
B.They are frequently used.
C.They are collected in the OED.
D.They are recorded by Shakespeare.
14.What can we learn about the method of creating words like “languageless”?
A.It proved to be a wrong way to use words.
B.It was Shakespeare's way to invent words.
C.Modern people seldom make words in this way.
D.Shakespeare based the way on traditional strategies.
15.What does the text mainly discuss
A.Why Shakespeare was daring in his use of English.
B.How Shakespeare's plays influence teaching.
C.How well Shakespeare could use English.
D.Why Shakespeare is so influential.

Now I want to share with you some tip on my learning English. What actually helps me is watching English TV programmes and films. They don't have to be anything really difficultly. I would like to recommend that you can start with a children's show you had already seen. On one hand, you know what is happened. You can concentrate on writing down useful words and phrases or try to repeat that is said. On the other hand, you can hear English speak in a more natural way. In my opinion, I will learn much faster but benefit a lot more if you do as I.
