Kwame Alexander is a best selling author of 24 books. His novel in verse (诗体) The Crossover won the Newbery Medal in 2015, and was followed by another verse novel in 2016, Booked. In the just released The Playbook: 52 Rules to Aim, Shoot, and Score in This Game Called Life, Alexander aims to inspire readers to dream big and reach for their goals.
Time For Kids:
What can you tell us about The Playbook
Kwame Alexander:
I wanted to write a book about how important it is to persevere (坚持) and accept the challenges that come, because they only make you stronger. And I wanted to do it in a really cool and fun way, using sports as a metaphor (隐喻), so students would be interested in reading a book that is telling them how to make their lives better.
TFK:
Where did you get the idea for the book
Alexander:
In The Crossover, the father of the main characters, Josh and Jordan, gives them these rules for life, called Basketball Rules. Well, I was having breakfast with a friend of mine in New York City. He said,“Kwame, I love those Basketball Rules you have in The Crossover. You should think about writing a whole book on those.” That's where it all began.
TFK:
Is it hard to mix sports and poetry (诗歌)
Alexander:
I love sports, and I've been writing poetry since I was a kid. So those two things are as natural to me as breathing, laughing and walking.
TFK:
You've said teachers need to make learning poetry fun. Did you have a teacher like this as a kid
Alexander:
My mom. She read poetry to my sisters and me when I was a kid, and she would make the words jump off the page!
TFK:
What advice would you give to young writers
Alexander:
Read everything you can get your hands on. The best way to become a good writer is to read what other people have written.

Robert Frost (1874-1963) is one of America's most beloved poets. He was a contemporary of many modernist poetic movements, but he wasn't associated (与……有联系) with any particular group of poets. He stuck to his own literary beliefs, and as a result, he attracted a good deal of criticism from the literary world. But, it is just because he was such a person and his voice was so original that Frost became so beloved. If you are to choose one of his poems and read it aloud on a busy street, we are sure that many people will recognize the poem immediately as Frost's.
Mending Wall, which is the first poem in North of Boston, Frost's second book of poetry, is one of his most popular poems. It is a poem about two neighbors who fix a rock wall that lies between their homes. “I” want to destroy the wall, and the “neighbor” wants to leave it standing.
We just can't get enough of walls, can we People love boundaries (界线). We love them when we're little, protecting our precious toys from our troublesome (令人烦恼的) brothers and sisters. As we get older, we begin to throw around the gentle term “personal space”, as in “GET OUT OF MY ROOM!” In college, we really learn how the idea of “My house is your house” doesn't always result in happy roommate relationships. After we become adults with good jobs and a lot of cool things, we often put up fences, gates, walls, or doors to protect our stuff and keep the peace.
Walls help us protect ourselves, but their downside is that they often keep people from communicating with each other. Mending Wall makes us take a look at how we use our walls and boundaries, and why we use them the way we do. This poem sends a wake up call to the universe. There are walls between our hearts.

I am reading Why Wall Street Matters, by William D.Cohan. It is not only informative but very readable, well researched, and easily understood. I find myself having to make course corrections about many preconceived(事先形成的) ideas about the financial engine of the United States and global economy. He has a real problem with Sen. Elizabeth Warren's ideas for improving matters. But other than that, I found him very knowledgeable about his subject.

If you have a love of flying, I recommend Mavericks of the Sky, by Barry Rosenberg and Catherine Macaulay. It tells the true story of the development of the US Air Mail service, which was made possible by the early flights and routes taken on by courageous pilots during and after World War Ⅰ. The details of the danger and risks these pilots faced as well as the political, economic, and social advantages of a faster way to deliver mail make for a very interesting read.
—Rick Onderdonk, Tehachapi, Calif.
Nigel Hamilton has produced an original book explaining how Franklin Roosevelt assumed (承担) leadership of America's response to Nazi and Japanese threats, detailing the responsibility of the US president as commander in chief of the nation's armed forces. In the 19th century the novel came into its own.Thousands upon thousands of novels were published. Of those novels, very few are remembered today. However, there are exceptions: the works of Jane Austen — Pride and Prejudice(《傲慢与偏见》), Sense and Sensibility(《理智与情感》) — for example. They achieved only modest success at first but grew and grew in fame (名声) and reputation.
How did Jane Austen become so popular Of course, the novels are romantic. Everyone knows the love story of Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennett (in Pride and Prejudice), and how they overcome their own pride and prejudice to live happily ever after. The lovers are almost as famous today as Romeo and Juliet.
But there is more to Austen's popularity than the fact that she wrote about love. The books are very witty (机智的) and ironic (讽刺的), and show a great understanding of society and of people. Pride and Prejudice opens with what must be the most famous sentence in the English novel: “It is a truth universally acknowledged (认可), that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.”
The truth, of course, is the opposite: wealthy, unmarried young men are extremely attractive to young women. And women — especially penniless (身无分文) or near?penniless ones — are the subjects of Austen's tales.
Women nowadays may be more equal to men than they were in Jane Austen's day. However, a sense that women still basically live in a world dominated (控制) by men ensures that Austen still has many keen readers.

THE BRONTE FAMILY
Yorkshire in England was the setting for two great novels of the 19th century. These were Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre and Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights. The youngest sister, Anne, was also a gifted novelist, and her books have the same extraordinary quality as her sisters'.
Their father was Patrick Bronte, born in Ireland. He moved with his wife, Maria Bronte, and their six small children to Haworth in Yorkshire in 1820. Soon after, Mrs. Bronte and the two eldest children died, leaving the father to care for the remaining three girls and a boy.
Charlotte was born in 1816. Emily was born in 1818 and Anne in 1820. Their brother Branwell was born in 1817. Left to themselves, the children wrote and told stories and walked over the hills. They grew up largely self?educated. Branwell showed a great interest in drawing. The girls were determined to earn money for his art education. They took positions as teachers or taught children in their homes.
As children they had all written many stories. Charlotte, as a young girl, alone wrote 22 books, each with 60 to 100 pages of small handwriting. Therefore, they turned to writing for income. By 1847, Charlotte had written The Professor; Emily, Wuthering Heights; and Anne, Agnes Grey. After much difficulty Anne and Emily found a publisher, but there was no interest shown in Charlotte's book. (It was not published until 1859.) However, one publisher expressed an interest in seeing more of her work. Jane Eyre was already started, and she hurriedly finished it. It was accepted at once; thus each of the sisters had a book published in 1847.
Jane Eyre was immediately successful; the other two, however, did not do so well. People did not like Wuthering Heights. They said it was too wild, too animal?like. But gradually it came to be considered one of the finest novels in the English language. Emily lived only a short while after the publication of the book and Anne died in 1849.
Charlotte published Shirley in 1849, and Villette in 1853. In 1854 she married Arthur Bell Nicholls. But only a year later, she died of tuberculosis (肺结核) as her sisters had.

The chance of a snowy holiday season in most American cities is practically impossible this year, so any festive atmosphere to be enjoyed will have to be the imaginary sort. Luckily, there are books for that.
The Complete Fairy Tales by Hans Christian Andersen
Any reader of fairy tales knows Andersen's responsible for the snowy scenes in The Snow Queen, the story of children Kay and Gerda, who must face the goddess like woman who controls all snowflakes after Kay is kidnapped.
Family Life by Akhil Sharma
It's a beautiful yet tragic novel about an Indian family immigrating to America, only to face entirely new hardships. Sharma's novel isn't entirely set in the wintertime, but his poetic descriptions of winter weather as lovely yet isolating make it a great choice for a December read.
Frankenstein by Mary Shelley
Go ahead and give up the movie adaptation that has been produced recently and read or re read the classic itself. You know the story: a scientist driven by his ambition discovers a method for creating life, and spends two years cobbling together a living creature, who later feels angry with him.
An American Childhood by Annie Dillard
Dillard's first book is, as its title suggests, about her change from being a self centered child to being an adult more concerned with the world around her than with her own personal concerns. Her parents are key figures in the story. One famous scene takes place during what the author calls “a big snow”, in 1950.

Many leading AI researchers think that in a matter of decades, artificial intelligence will be able to do not merely some of our jobs, but all of our jobs, forever transforming life on Earth.
The reason why many reject this as science fiction is that we've traditionally thought of intelligence as something mysterious that can only exist in biological organisms, especially humans. But such an idea is unscientific.
From my point of view as a physicist and AI researcher, intelligence is simply a certain kind of information processing performed by elementary particles (基本粒子) moving around, and there is no law of physics that says one can't build machines more intelligent than us in all ways. This suggests that we've only seen the tip of the intelligence iceberg and that there is an amazing potential to unlock the full intelligence that is potential in nature and use it to help humanity.
If we get it right, the upside is huge. Since everything we love about civilization is the product of intelligence, amplifying (扩大) our own intelligence with AI has the potential to solve tomorrow's toughest problems. For example, why risk our loved ones dying in traffic accidents that self driving cars could prevent or dying of cancers that AI might help us find cures for Why not increase productivity through automation and use AI to accelerate our research and development of affordable sustainable (可持续的) energy
I'm optimistic that we can develop rapidly with advanced AI as long as we win the race between the growing power of our technology and the knowledge with which we manage it.But this requires giving up our outdated concept of learning from mistakes. That helped us win the race with less powerful technology: We messed up with fire and then invented fire extinguishers (灭火器), and we messed up with cars and then invented seat belts. However, it's an awful idea for more powerful technologies, such as nuclear weapons or superintelligent AI — where even a single mistake is unacceptable and we need to get things right the first time.
