Since the 800's, November 1st is a holiday known as All Saints' Day. The evening before is known as Halloween. During the festival, poor people would beg for food and families would give them “soul cakes” in return for their promise to pray for the family's dead relatives.
Halloween, however, has a special meaning for children today, who dress in funny or ghostly clothes and knock at neighborhood doors shouting “Trick or Treat!” Princesses,_ghosts_and_witches all hold bags open to catch the candies or cakes that the neighbors drop in.
Today school dances and neighborhood parties called “block parties” are popular among the young people and old. They dress up as historical or political figures and go to costume parties. Teenagers enjoy costume dances at their schools and the more outrageous the costume is, the better it is.
Certain tricks such as soaping car windows and knocking at the neighbors' windows are expected. But parties and pranks are not the only things that Halloweeners enjoy doing. Some collect money to buy food and medicine for poor children around the world.
Halloween originated as a celebration connected with evil spirits. Black is one of the traditional Halloween colors, probably because Halloween festivals and traditions took place at night. In the weeks before October 31, Americans decorate windows of houses and schools with silhouettes (轮廓) of witches and black cats.
Pumpkins are also a symbol of Halloween. Carving pumpkins into some kinds of lanterns is a Halloween custom also dating back to Ireland. When the Irish brought their customs to the United States, they carved faces on pumpkins instead of turnips (芜菁) because in the autumn they were more plentiful than turnips. Today the lanterns in the windows of a house on Halloween night let costumed children know that there are candies (糖果) waiting for them if they knock and say “Trick or Treat!”

The people sitting around the fire are very strange. Some of them have huge noses. They have empty cheeks and large stupidly smiling mouths. Their faces are painted red, blue, and black; some are even green. They have antlers (鹿角) on their heads and long black horsehair hanging down their backs. Who can these people be
They are not nearly as frightening as they look. They are the Delaware celebrating their form of Thanksgiving, the Festival of the Corn Goddess. They are thanking her for the harvest and asking her to send them another good harvest next year. The faces are really masks, which are worn as part of the ceremony.
In the past many Native American people made use of masks in ceremonies and celebrations. The masks varied from nation to nation, but they were most often used for religious reasons. When a nation was going to war, those going into battle would wear terrible masks to honor the god of war, whose totem (图腾) was set up in the center of the camp. All the fighters would dance in front of it.
Many of the masks still exist. They are made of many different materials, but the majority are of skillfully carved wood or of animal skins. Some masks were in the forms of birds and animals, but others were in human forms. They were painted in bright colors and covered with beautiful designs. Often these included symbols for the things the people depended on for their lives, such as rain, sunlight, plants, and fire.
Sometimes, people wore masks to hide their faces from the enemy. Often, we, too, wear masks to hide our feelings because we are too proud or shy to show them to others. These are not the kind of masks worn on Halloween but are the facial expressions that we expect to cover our inner thoughts. Although these_masks do not look like those of the Native Americans, perhaps our reasons for wearing them are similar.

In many parts of the world, people still celebrate festivals at harvest time. In West Africa, people celebrate the New Yam Festival, called Iri ji. Yams, a kind of sweet potato, are an important food in countries such as Nigeria. In Nigeria the Ibo people have a yam harvest festival each August. The night before the festival, they dispose of the last year's yams. A village elder or chief eats the first new yam. Then he offers the harvest to the gods and to the ancestors of the people. Finally, he divides the yams among the people. On the festival day, people take part in traditional dances all day and all night.
The people of South India celebrate a festival called Pongal, which lasts four days. In this region, heavy rainstorms called monsoons come in October and November. These rains water the crops. Farmers harvest the crops in January. On the first day of Pongal, people give thanks for the rains to Indra, ruler of the clouds. On the second day, they say prayers to Surya, the sun god. On the third day, the festival of cattle, or cows, takes place. People thank the cows for the work they do to pull plows and give milk. The final day of Pongal is devoted to outdoor activities and excursions. The people also set out rice balls for birds to eat. They believe that this brings good luck and happiness.
Other places also have elaborate harvest rituals. For example, in Brazil people celebrate Saint John's Day. It is a midwinter festival, but it takes place on June 24 and 25. During Saint John's Day, people light bonfires to wake up Saint John in heaven so that he can hear their prayers. The festival also involves special foods. People cook desserts made from corn. One such dish, pamonha, is sweet corn that is mashed and wrapped in cooked corn husks, or leaves. Another dish, canjica, is a corn pudding.
As long as they farm the land, people in these and other places will probably continue to celebrate the harvest.

Several different stories are told about the origin of Saint Valentine's Day. One legend dates as far back as the days of the Roman Empire. According to the story, Claudius, the Emperor of Rome, wanted to increase the size of his army. He knew that it would be easier to get young men who were not married to join. Therefore he made a rule that no young man could marry until he had served a certain number of years in the army.
A priest (牧师) named Valentine broke the rule and secretly married a great many young people. Finally, Claudius found out Valentine and put the priest in prison, where he remained until his death on February 14.
After his death, Valentine was made a saint (圣人), and the day of his death was named Saint Valentine's Day. It became the custom for lovers to send each other message on this day. Now Saint Valentine's Day is a time for people to send one another greetings of many kinds.
February 14, Valentine's Day, is sweethearts' day, on which people in love with each other express their tender (温柔的) emotions. People sometimes put their love message in a heart shaped box of chocolates, or a bunch of flowers tied with red ribbons (带子). Words of letters may be written on the flower covered card, or something else. Whatever the form may be, the message is almost the same:“Will you be my Valentine?”

There are a number of special days of the year that are celebrated in different countries. The origins of most of the days are unknown. They were certainly not created by individual people. Other days, however, especially those celebrated in western countries, often owe their origins to a particular person. One of the most popular of these, even
though it is fairly recent, is Mother's Day. Mothers have always been highly regarded in all cultures. The ancient Romans had a festival known as Hilario, during which children took presents to the temple of the “Mother of the Gods”. The Christian Church adopted this idea and called it Mothering Sunday. However, over the years this custom was gradually forgotten and almost disappeared by the end of the 19th century.
Born in 1864 in Virginia, USA, Anna Jarvis was a school teacher and believed children should show gratitude to their mothers for all their love and care. Encouraged by a friend, she wrote to thousands of important people — politicians, churchmen, doctors, city officials — and asked them to support her idea: a special day of the year for thanking mothers.
In 1910 the Governor of West Virginia introduced Mother's Day into the state. The date chosen was May 10 — the second Sunday in May, which is still observed in America today. This date was chosen because May 10 was the date on which in 1908 Anna Jarvis's mother had died. In 1914 President Woodrow Wilson made May 10 the official date for Mother's Day throughout the United States.
Soon there was a Mother's Day International Association and the custom began to be adopted in many countries of the world.
Anna Jarvis, a sad and disillusioned (失望的) woman, died in 1948. The custom she had worked so hard to establish and which had become almost universal had lost its original purpose. It had been taken over by business. As with Christmas, the giving of presents and the sending of cards had become a multi?million?dollar industry.

The spirit of Thanksgiving is all about showing gratitude for your good fortune and giving to those who are less fortunate. Express your thanks this holiday season by involving the whole family in volunteering, donating, and spreading kindness. Try these great ideas to teach your children graciousness (仁慈) and goodwill. And don't forget — you can use these ideas all year round!
Visit a hospital.
The hospital can be a very lonely place for patients, especially during the holidays. Spend some of your time this holiday season with those who aren't able to be at home. You might visit the children's hospital and hand out stuffed animals or treats to children who need the extra cheer. Ask your kids to pick out a gift they think a kid like them would love.
Volunteer at an animal shelter.
It's important to keep your family and friends in mind during the holidays, but don't forget the animals! Hundreds of homeless animals need your time, love, and hugs, too. Take your son or daughter to an animal shelter to volunteer for a day, or sign up to volunteer once a week to spread the love throughout the year. And if your family is ready for a pet, adopt one of your own!
Donate money or volunteer at a women's shelter or an orphanage.
Give a Thanksgiving gift to one or more of the shelters or homes in your community. Your gift can be anything from a turkey to a homemade decoration or a toy. For an extra special gift, take time out of your busy holiday schedule and help out by serving food at a homeless shelter. You undoubtedly will brighten many spirits, including your own.
Invite extra guests to join your family for dinner.
The holidays are a time for giving and togetherness. If you know someone who will be alone for the holidays, make them feel loved by inviting them to your family's holiday dinner this year. The more, the merrier!

Pumpkin carving is a popular part of modern America's Halloween celebration. In October, pumpkins can be found everywhere in the country from door steps to dinner tables. People have been making Jack O'Lantern at Halloween for centuries. The tradition originated from an Irish myth about a man nicknamed “Stingy Jack”.
According to the story, Stingy Jack invited the Devil to have a drink with him. True to his name, Stingy Jack didn't want to pay for his drink, so he convinced the Devil to turn himself into a coin that Jack could use to buy their drinks. Once the Devil did so, Jack decided to keep the money and put it into his pocket next to a silver cross, which prevented the Devil from changing back into his original form.
Jack eventually freed the Devil, under the condition that he would not bother Jack for one year and that if Jack died, he wouldn't claim his soul.
The next year, Jack again tricked the Devil into climbing into a tree to pick a piece of fruit, while he was up in the tree, Jack carved a sign of the cross into the tree's bark, so that the Devil couldn't come down until he promised Jack not to bother him for ten more years.
Soon after, Jack died. As the legend goes, God would not allow such a boring figure into heaven. The Devil, upset by the trick Jack had played on him and keeping his words not to claim his soul, wouldn't allow Jack into hell. He sent Jack off into the dark night with only a burning coal to light his way.Jack put the coal into a carved out turnip and has been roaming (漫游) the Earth with the “lantern” ever since. The Irish began to refer to this ghostly figure as “Jack of the Lantern”, and then, simply “Jack O'Lantern”.
